This new block is an alternative to the vanilla chest. You can put in all directions. It can only be opened from the front and you can put another one on top to form a double cabinet! The regular cabinet has the same space as a chest (27 slots) and the double cabinet has the same space as a double chest (54 slots). You can use hoppers to take items out or put them in.
