Fluid Structure Interaction

The following validation studies are based on the well know benchmark developed by Turek and Hron[1] to verify and validate new applications and methods for Fluid Structure Interaction(FSI) problems. OpenFPCI has been validated using three test cases:

  • CFD3 : A pure fluid dynamics study
  • CSM3 : A pure structural study
  • FSI3 : A combined study.

Geometry

The domain is shown in the figure below, there is parabolic flow at the inlet with a fixed rigid cylinder and a elastic flag.

Foam-Extend

The CFD3 case involves the incompressible laminar flow of anewtonian fluid over the cylinder and elastic flag that is assumed to be fixed. The quatities for comparison are the lift and drag forces over the cylinder and flag.

ParaFEM

The CSM3 case involves the gravitational loading of the elastic beam ignoring the fluid completely. The beam undergoes periodic vibration due to the loading. Properties of the material are shown
