This chapter walks through starting the application and reaching the point where you can browse a server or design one.
OpcUaManager for Windows x64 is published on the project's GitHub Releases page. Each release offers three ways to get it:
-
Installer —
OPC-UA-Manager-<version>-Setup.exeinstalls the application, creates Start-menu shortcuts and the Maintenance Tool, and receives updates through Info > Check for updates…. -
Portable ZIP — extract
OPC-UA-Manager-<version>-win64.zipinto any writable folder and runappOpcUaManager.exe; all data stays next to the executable (see Configuration). -
Build from source — download Source code (zip) from the same page or clone the repository, then build it with CMake or Qt Creator, or create your own installer with
packaging/release.ps1. The prerequisites are listed in the project README.
OpcUaManager is a young open-source project and is currently distributed without a digital code-signing certificate. Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, or Windows may therefore warn about an unknown publisher or an unrecognized file when you download or run the installer. This is expected for the current releases and does not by itself indicate that the installer contains malicious software.
If Windows blocks the download or the start of the installer, use the options Windows provides for unrecognized applications:
- Edge blocks the download: in the downloads list open the file's … menu, choose Keep, then Show more > Keep anyway.
- Windows protected your PC: choose More info, then Run anyway.
- Portable ZIP: before extracting, open the ZIP file's Properties and tick Unblock.
With Smart App Control turned on (Windows 11), unsigned applications may be blocked without a Run anyway option. Download releases only from the project's GitHub Releases page. GitHub shows a SHA-256 digest next to each file; compare it with the output of Get-FileHash <file> -Algorithm SHA256.
Code signing may be added in the future as the project grows and becomes more widely adopted.
Launch the installed application (or the portable build's executable). On start the program opens the launcher, from which you can:
- create a new client project or open a recent one;
- open an existing client project (
.uaproj) from disk; - open Server Studio to design or run a local OPC UA server.
A project is optional for a quick look: you can connect to a server without saving a project. A project becomes useful when you want to keep a connection and a set of monitored nodes for next time. See Configuration for what a project stores and where.
- From the launcher, create or open a client project (or continue without one).
- In the connection form, enter the server's discovery URL, for example
opc.tcp://127.0.0.1:4840. - Choose the security policy and the identity (anonymous, or username/password) the server expects, then connect.
- When the connection succeeds, the server's address space appears in the browse tree. Continue in OPC UA Client.
- From the launcher, open Server Studio.
- Create a server project (
.uaserver) and add a namespace, objects, and variables to the address space. - Start the server; the studio launches the headless runtime as a separate process and reports its endpoint.
- Use Open in Client to connect the built-in client to your running server. Continue in OPC UA Server and Working with a Server.
The application ships with English, German, French, Italian, Russian, and Ukrainian user interfaces. The language can be switched at runtime and is remembered between sessions (see Configuration). This documentation is available in the same languages; the API reference is English.
Next to the language, the start page offers the color theme: System follows the light or dark mode of Windows, Light and Dark keep the theme fixed. The workspace opens in the same theme, and the choice is remembered between sessions, together with the window size and the pane layout (see Configuration).
This guide ships with the application and opens from Info > Documentation. It is shown in an offline documentation window that needs no internet connection and follows the application theme; navigation controls let you go back, forward, reload, and return to the guide's home page. The same window also hosts the OpcUaManager API Reference.
