1. Persistent Storage on the Server
Why:
Chat histories represent important business data. Relying on in‑memory or client‑side storage (like localStorage) isn’t sufficient because:
- Data longevity: Users expect their meeting history and debriefs to persist across sessions, browsers, or even device changes.
- Scalability and Security: Storing chat logs in a database (e.g., MongoDB, PostgreSQL) allows you to apply proper security, indexing, and backup strategies.
How to Implement:
Database Schema
Create a dedicated collection/table (e.g., conversations or chat_logs) where each document/record includes:
- A unique identifier (conversation ID)
- The associated user’s ID
- Meeting ID (if applicable)
- An array of messages, where each message has:
- The sender (user or AI)
- Timestamp
- Content (and possibly metadata like message status)
- Optionally, a summary or debrief generated after the conversation
API Endpoints
Build endpoints to:
- Save a new conversation: Create a new document when a meeting or chat starts.
- Append messages: As the chat proceeds, append new messages to the conversation.
- Fetch conversation history: Allow the client to query past chat logs (with pagination if necessary).
2. Client-Side State Management for Chat Sessions
Why:
While the permanent record is stored on the server, you’ll still want to manage the current chat session in your front end for a smooth user experience.
How to Implement:
In-Memory State
Use React state (or a state management library like Redux or React Query) to manage the current chat session. This state might include:
- The live conversation messages.
- A flag to indicate when data is being loaded.
Local Caching (Optional)
If you want to improve performance or offer an “offline” experience, you can cache recent chat sessions in localStorage. However, ensure you revalidate by fetching the latest data when the app starts.
Real-Time Updates
If your application supports real-time messaging (e.g., via websockets), update the in‑memory state as messages are sent and received. Once the session is complete, the conversation should be saved to your database.
3. Data Revalidation and Synchronization
Why:
Even if you cache some data on the client for performance reasons, it’s crucial that the user sees the most recent information.
How to Implement:
On Route Change or App Load
Similar to what we did in the UserProvider, you can have a dedicated hook (e.g., useChatHistory) that fetches the latest conversation logs when the user navigates to their chat history page.
Periodic Sync
For ongoing conversations, consider periodically syncing the current session with the server to avoid data loss (this can be especially important in case of network disruptions).
4. Security and Privacy Considerations
Sensitive Data
If your chats contain sensitive meeting information, ensure that:
- The API endpoints are secured (authenticated and authorized).
- Data is encrypted at rest in your database.
- The client only fetches conversation data that the logged-in user is permitted to view.
Data Retention
Consider how long you want to keep old conversations. Depending on regulatory requirements or business needs, you might implement data retention policies.
5. Putting It All Together
For your SaaS, you could have a workflow like this:
During a Meeting:
- The front end uses an in‑memory state to display the ongoing conversation.
- Each message is sent to the server (via an API or websocket), where it’s appended to the user’s conversation record.
After the Meeting:
- A final debrief summary might be generated and stored along with the conversation.
- When the user later navigates to their “History” section, a dedicated API call retrieves the conversation (or a list of conversation summaries) from the database.
Accessing Old Chats:
- Your UI can provide a list of past meetings and chat logs.
- Selecting a conversation will load the full chat history from the database and display it, ensuring that the user sees the latest version from your persistent store.
Final Thoughts on Scalability
Technical Complexity:
The approach outlined above is considered scalable for a SaaS application. You’re separating concerns:
- Long-term storage and retrieval of conversation data happens on the server (using databases).
- Real-time interactions and temporary state management occur on the client.
Evolving Requirements:
As your app grows, you might evolve your architecture (for example, using GraphQL subscriptions or a dedicated chat backend service). For now, a well-organized REST API combined with proper client state management will work very well.
By following these principles, you can provide users with reliable access to their past interactions—just as OpenAI does with ChatGPT—while keeping your application both secure and scalable.
