Law

By arms law, civilian commodity weapons may not exceed a strict damage threshold of 20dps. Such weapons may resort to adopting strong tamper protection to prevent aftermarket enhancements from breaching that threshold. Any weapon stronger than 20 dps is labeled "Military" and requires a military membership with Good Behavior to acquire. To enforce a power dynamic between civilian and military bodies, the minimum legal dps of a military weapon should be 30 dps.

Economics

The average price of weaponry tends to be 100x greater than that of regular commodities.

The average price per dps for a civilian weapon increases according to the equation `f(x) = 1024 + 128x + 32x^2. This means that civilian weapons generally start at a price of 5K and the most powerful civilian weapon should cost 16K.

The price curve for military weapons should be twice as harsh as the price curve for civilian weapons. The average price per dps for a military weapon increases according to the equation `f(x) = 16384 + 256x + 64x^2. This means that the weakest possible military weapon should cost 3x as much as the strongest civilian weapon.

The Military Gateway

Further away from the starting system, civilization becomes further entrenched into total war. At some point, it should be extremely difficult for the player to advance further without acquiring a new military-grade version of their starting ship. All military shipgrades will have the capability to fire multiple weapons at once - only approved military devices may be installed on them.

When the player makes this transition, military-level enemies that spawn in low-level systems will become much more aggressive.

Exiting the Military

Those who join the military are bound to it for life. The only exit is via desertion or death. And those who desert become enemies of the state. At some point, a player who joins the military will have to escape it to reach the objective.
