AI Terminal Text Editor

The experiment

Even though I am a proud hater of AI, I cannot deny that ai is becoming more important in the development industry, feature software engineering jobs might be taken over by AI for all we know, but one thing AI will never be able to do, is to replace the developer mindset.

What is the developer mindset?

The developer mindset - as I like to call it, is the art of taking big project ideas, or tasks and breaking them up into chunks, working on each chunk one at a time and then combining them to achieve the goal.

The challenge

Ask your favourite AI the following question:

Make a game engine that supports cross-platform, it should be 2D and 3D, support mouse, keyboard, gamepads, joysticks and whatever other inputs there may be.

Then look at the response and think for yourselves:

  • Does it compile?
  • Does it actually run and give the results you were expecting?
  • Is it's architecture coherent?
  • What order should you implement the components?
  • How do the different systems interact?
  • What assumptions did the AI make?
  • How are you going to manage the version control?

What if your project is over a million lines, with hundreds of files? If you use chatgpt, the chances are that you have to mannualy copy paste code, do you understand the code, are you putting it in the right file, etc?

Github copilot is exceptional in most of these questions because of it's ability to read your files, write files, add packages, version control and a ton more awesome features, but the overall idea stay's the same.
