Pokémon: No Center Challenge - Speedrun Strategy Guide

Overview

This guide provides a streamlined path to complete the game efficiently using a Venusaur-centric strategy with key support Pokémon. All level caps and important move thresholds are carefully managed.

Starter & Early Game Strategy

Bulbasaur - The Core

Evolution Path: Bulbasaur → Ivysaur (Level 16) → Venusaur (Level 32)

Leveling Strategy (1-10):

  • Train exclusively against Kakuna and Metapod
  • Use Leech Seed to recover HP between battles
  • Avoid using PP unnecessarily; rely on Leech Seed damage
  • Stop at Level 10 - This is critical to learn Vine Whip

Route 1 - Brock's Gym

Level: 10 (Vine Whip acquired) Tactic: Spam Vine Whip Note: May require multiple attempts due to RNG

Mt. Moon Section

TM Acquisition

  • Pick up TM Bullet Seed inside Mt. Moon
  • Optional: Battle the Hiker inside to gain extra EXP and reduce later grinding

Misty's Gym

Target Level: ~20-22 Tactic: Spam Bullet Seed (super effective against Water types) Result: Easy victory

Nugget Bridge & Rival Battle

Key Level Milestone

  • Level 22: Bulbasaur learns Razor Leaf
  • Tactic: Spam Razor Leaf and rely on critical hit luck
  • Strategy: Solo the rival with Bulbasaur

Resource Management

  • Collect the hidden Elixir near the first Hiker
  • Use the Elixir on Bulbasaur to avoid PP issues on the next route
  • Stock Potions as backup in case you need to use Struggle before reaching the Elixir

Vermilion City & S.S. Anne

Diglett Acquisition

  • Catch a Diglett in Diglett's Cave
  • Use against: Rival battle on S.S. Anne

S.S. Anne Strategy

  1. Collect all items on the ship
  2. Rival Battle:
    • Watch the level cap; your starter may be near the limit
    • Against Pidgeotto: Lead with Diglett, then switch to Bulbasaur to finish
    • Keep Bulbasaur at the minimum level needed to stay under the cap
    • Diglett solos the rest with Magnitude/Dig

Lt. Surge's Gym

Challenge Level: Very High Requirements:

  • Enter at Level 22
  • Strategy:
    • Pray for good RNG against Electabuzz
    • Use Magnitude; need to 2HKO
  • Result: Barely survived with sliver of HP

Mid-Game: Celadon & Rocket Hideout

Team Additions

  1. Vaporeon (from Eevee)
  2. Doduo (from Route 16/17)

Rocket Hideout

  • Vaporeon and Doduo can solo all trainers
  • Use the Vending Machines in Celadon to stock up on healing items

Erika's Gym

  • Solo with Doduo
  • Tactic: Spam Fly
  • Note: Watch out for Stun Spore; needs a bit of luck

Late Game Strategy

Koga's Gym

  1. Get the Super Rod south of Lavender Town
  2. Catch a Gyarados
  3. Move Deleter Strategy:
    • Delete Surf and Strength
    • Re-teach them repeatedly to reset PP
    • This gives Gyarados "infinite" PP
  4. Battle: Use Gyarados as main attacker; swap and heal with other team members

Blaine's Gym

  • Head directly to Cinnabar Island
  • Defeat Blaine
  • Travel to the Sevii Islands and obtain Rock Smash
  • Teach Rock Smash to Gyarados

Final Gyms

Sabrina's Gym - Silph Co.

  • Minimize trainer battles
  • Strategy with Gyarados:
    • Use 3 X-Attack
    • Spam Strength
  • Achievement: Win with a Pokémon knowing 3 HMs

Viridian Gym - Joy

Preparation:

  • Use 6 X-Defense + 6 X-Attack on Gyarados
  • Tactic: OHKO everything with Strength
  • Risk: Clefable might buff itself; needs slight luck

Elite Four - Detailed Breakdown

Lorelei

  • Set up 6 X-Attack on Gyarados
  • Setup Point: Dewgong

Bruno

  • 6 X-Special (overkill, but ensures safety)

Agatha

  • Most difficult to set up against
  • Strategy:
    • Use 1 Guard Spec
    • Then 6 X-Special
  • Should sweep with ease

  1. Lead with a sacrifice Pokémon to avoid Intimidate
  2. Switch to Gyarados
  3. Set up 6 X-Attack
  4. Spam Strength to sweep

Champion (Rival)

  1. Lead with Dodrio to bait AI into switching to Rhydon

General Strategy:

  • Setup with X-items as needed
  • The raw power of Mewtwo makes this section easy

  • Use Safeguard against Lance's Gyarados
  • AI gets stuck spamming Thunder Wave (which always fails under Safeguard)
  • Proceed to sweep effortlessly
