Meet the only movie game released on the Virtual Boy. The game itself is not that big and might be a bit buggy. But it's a decent way to kill about 30 minutes if you like trying out Virtual Boy games.
You, the player, take control of the Mariner, captaining his vessel and saving the Atollers stranded in the water. Who do they need saving from? The evil Deacon's minions known as the Smokers who are looking to enslave the Atollers.
Controls are as follows:
Input | Action |
---|---|
D-Pad Left | Rotate Left |
D-Pad Right | Rotate Right |
D-Pad Up | Move Forward |
D-Pad Down | Zoom Camera Out |
L/R Shoulder Button | Shoot Cannon |
Controls feel somewhat like a slow moving version of Asteroids, in which moving forwards and backwards will cause the Mariner's ship to drift in that direction slowly. This is useful for staying on the move, however.
The player is given a limited number of lives and the game plays like an arcade game, seeking a high score. There are various types of enemies, though they all look the same, riding jet skis. The more advanced enemies move faster. Thrashers like to do tricks though, so that's fun. Two other noticeable enemy types exist as well. The PT Boats will appear when no Atollers are left are are worth zero points. They also seem to appear in the rounds at times too, but the manual for the game implies they only appear in the would be game over scenario. Seeker Sharks, on the other hand, cannot be killed. They will slowly approach an Atoller to eat them. They can only be slowed down by shooting them and will leave when the round is over.
Scoring for enemies killed is as follows:
Enemy | Points |
---|---|
Smokers | 100 |
Berserkers | 200 |
Thrashers | 300 |
Seekers | 400 |
PT Boats | 0 |
The following are end of round bonus. A round ends when all enemies are cleared from the area.
Bonus | Description | Points |
---|---|---|
Atollers | Rescued Atollers | 100 each |
Hands Off | No Atollers Grabbed | 500 |
Survival | Lost No Lives | 1000 |
Saved All Atoller | No Atollers Taken | 500 |
Along with these bonuses, there is one special Atoller named Enola. She is indicated in the game as the only Atoller that is blinking or flashing. She's special to the point that an alert will play if she is grabbed. If Enola is uncaptured at the end of a round, the Enola Bonus multiplier will increase by one, capping at a x8 multiplier for the round bonus scores. If Enola is captured, her multiplier will reset to x1.
When a round is over, one Atoller is added to the current count and the process starts again.
Extra Life (5) Earn an extra life at 25,000 points
Keeping the Enemies at Bay (10) Get at least 10,000 bonus points in one round.
This Waterland is My Land (50) Score at least 100,000 points
I'd Gladly Give My Life For Them (Not Really) (10) Get to Round 4 without losing a life
It's Not Safe in the Water (10) Score at least 50,000 points
Round 10 (25) Get to Round 10
- Keeping Enola alive is the key to getting any decent score in this game.
- Hands Off is a hard bonus to get. Survival is very worth it, though. Surviving level 4 with a x4 Enola bonus and all 13 Atollers is worth 11,300 points, which is likely when you'll earn Keeping the Enemies at Bay.
- If you make it to Round 10, you will have likely earned every achievement except for maybe I'd Gladly Give My Life For Them (Not Really).
- Running into the debris in the area will not damage your ship. The manual for the game even suggested running into them and shooting them to clear them out.
