2) Introduction

Virtual Boy: Wario Land is a rare instance of North America receiving a retro Nintendo game before Japan. It is the second game in the Wario Land series and the first to distinguish it from the Super Mario Land series. It features Wario falling into the depths of the Awazon and seeking revenge on the treasure-hoarding creatures he found there.

Since this is a Virtual Boy game, it's highly likely not many people have played it outside of an emulator. I managed to have a Virtual Boy in my childhood though (and still do) and I remember playing this game a lot. But I never quite beat it properly. I've since mastered the game on RetroAchievements and wanted to make a guide to help with some of the more confusing achievements people seem to have issues with.

3) Second Quest

Many achievements require the player to unlock Second Quest, namely those involved with defeating bosses in Second Quest. To do so, the player must collect all 10 Treasures found throughout the game, with one hidden in each non-boss level. Getting a Game Over will result in the loss of the most recently acquired treasure and it must be re-obtained. If the player manages to defeat the final boss of the game with all 10 Treasures in their possession, they will not only earn the S-Rank ending at minimum, but will convert their save file into a Second Quest save file. This is indicated on the file select screen by replacing the Bat that normally holds the level card with two Fairies.

Second Quest is exactly the same as First Quest with a few key differences. The most obvious difference out of the gate is a multitude of spike balls have been added to every level. While they are more of a minor annoyance in early stages, later stages can become impossible to complete without retaining certain Power-Ups for those areas, such as needing to jump over three spike balls which seems impossible as small Wario.

Second Quest is the game's most difficult challenge and why Humiliated Demon Head II is considered the hardest achievement in the game - not for the actual conditions to achieve it, but rather the requirements to even make it to the fight in the first place.

4) Achievements Guide

Progress Achievements | Total Points: 110

The following achievements are earned automatically, so long as the player pushes through the game to the end, and are not missable. The achievements for Second Quest are included here as well, though they are not needed to "beat" the game by RetroAchievement standards.

The Sand Fish (10)
Defeat the Sand Fish and finish Level 8 in the first Quest.

Power-Up Achievements | Total Points: 15

These achievements are technically optional. However, it would be very unlikely to not collect them in a full playthrough. Of particular note, the King Dragon Power-Up does not appear anywhere on the map. Instead, it must be "crafted" by collecting the Sea Dragon or Eagle Power-Up while the other Power-Up is active.

Power-Up How to Obtain Abilities
Small Wario Take Damage None
Standard Wario Garlic (while Small Wario) Barge
Bull Horned Helmet or Garlic (while Standard Wario) Barge, Body Slam
Eagle Eagle Statue Barge, Fly
Sea Dragon Dragon Crystal Fire Breath, Body Slam
King Dragon Eagle Statue + Dragon Crystal Body Slam, Fireball, Fly
Bulls Power (2)
Obtain the Bull Powerup.
Dragon Breath (4)
Obtain the Sea Dragon Powerup.
Eagle Wings (4)
Obtain the Eagle Powerup.
Dragon Fire (5)
Obtain the King Dragon Powerup.

Humiliate the Bosses | Total Points: 225

THESE ACHIEVEMENTS ARE MISSABLE.

To properly humiliate the bosses, the player must enter the boss's arena as small Wario and complete the fight. There are achievements for their initial fights in First Quest and as well as their rematches in Second Quest. In Second Quest, there are extra spike balls in the first three arenas and the bosses are much more aggressive than their First Quest versions.

If the player is defeated, they begin their next life in the elevator outside the boss arena as standard Wario. Since the achievements require the player to enter the arena as small Wario, they must go to the previous level and take damage before entering the fight again.

Humiliated Dinosaur Fish (25)
Defeat Dinosaur Fish as small Wario in the first Quest.
Humiliated Sand Fish (25)
Defeat Sand Fish as small Wario in the first Quest.
Humiliated Tank and Operator (25)
Defeat Tank and Operator as small Wario in the first Quest.
Humiliated Demon Head (25)

Humiliated Dinosaur Fish II (25)

Humiliated Sand Fish II (25)

Humiliated Tank and Operator II (25)

Humiliated Demon Head II (50)

Ending Achievements | Total Points: 60

There are six different endings to the game, five of which grant achievements. The player's ending is determined by some combination of whether or not they finished the game with all 10 Treasures in their possession, how many coins they earned, and how long it took for them to beat the game.

If the player does NOT finish the game with all 10 Treasures, they will earn their ending based on how many coins they collected. The ranges are as follows:

Rank Coin Range
D 0 to 4,999
C 5,000 to 19,000
B 20,000 to 49,999
A 50,000+
My Pocket Money (5)
Finish the Adventure with Rank C or higher.
Small Savings (10)
Finish the Adventure with Rank B or higher.
Salary for my Work (10)
Finish the Adventure with Rank A or higher.

If the player manages to defeat Demon Head with all 10 Treasure in their possession, then they qualify for either the S or SS rank endings. Those are earned based upon the time it took to complete the game.

  • Ending S: Collect all 10 Treasures and beat the game in over 90 minutes.
  • Ending SS: Collect all 10 Treasures and beat the game in under 90 minutes.
Treasure Hunter (10)
Finish the Adventure with Rank S or higher.
I'm Wario! (25)
Finish the Adventure with Rank SS.

Miscellaneous Achievements | Total Points: 65

The following achievements have no real categorization to them and their methods are described below:

I want more! (10)
Get 20 Extra Lifes.
For I want more!, the player must simple accrue 20 Extra Lives. These are earned by either collecting 100 hearts or 1 Big Diamond.

Heart Stealer (25)
Make a perfect game in the Heart Minigame [300 Coins].
After each level, the player is given access to two mini-game rooms. These rooms require coins on-hand to play, meaning if the player continues to the save point between floors and "banks" their coins, they cannot be used for the mini-games. The mini-games will also lock after play, giving the player limited chances to earn the achievements. However, they will unlock again after "completing" the previous level, though coins will have to be collected from that level again.

The first room is where the player can earn the Heart Stealer achievement. The game is more skill-based and involves jumping between the foreground and background in order to collect the Hearts going across the screen. Bats are mixed into the parade of Hearts, so the player must time their jumps to collect their spoils. This is further complicated when Bats will appear holding Big Diamonds, moving up and down to make them harder to collect. Hitting a bat drops the Heart count to zero, but collecting a Big Diamond is an automatic extra life. To earn the achievement, the player must collect every Heart and Big Diamond that appears in the 300 coin game.

Gamble King (25)
Make a perfect game in the Coin Minigame.
The second mini-game is Coin-based and where the player can earn Gamble King. The player is presented with three payment options: 3, 6, and 10 coins. The 3 Coin round will present the player with two mystery balls to open. One contains a lot of coins and the other contains an enemy that will reduce the total coins on-hand. Increasing the payment increases the payout, but also increases the potential losses. Oh, and each step up in payment adds another bat to the mix. To get a perfect game here, the player must simply pick the mystery ball with the Coins twice within three rounds on the 10-Coin difficulty.

To get at least two successes in three rounds with a 25% chance each time, the math works out to a 15.625% chance of success.

Totaka meets Wario (5)
Enjoy Totaka's Song.
Finally, to get Totaka meets Wario, the player must find Totaka's Song and have it play in the game. Totaka's Song is a goofy little 19-note song that is the signature of Kazumi Totaka that he inserts into most games he works on, usually as an Easter Egg. (Most Animal Crossing players will be familiar with it under the name K.K.'s Song.) It is no different here. To find the song, the player must beat Demon Head, regardless of quest number. After the credits roll, the END screen will appear and the player's completion time will display. Leaving the game on this screen for 1 minute and 15 seconds will prompt the song to play. The achievement pops once the last note plays.

5) Tips and Tricks

SS Ending

This can be done on First Quest and there is no reason to shoot for this on Second Quest outside of personal accolades. It is recommended to play through the game once to learn the game and learn the levels. The time limit of 90 minutes feels tight, but someone experienced with the game can easily clear it in under an hour. My personal time when I got this ending was 46:02.18. The level maps on Planet Virtual Boy are incredibly helpful for planning each level. Just make sure to pause the game or the emulator while you reference them. Also note that time spent on "status menu" floor still counts even if the visible clock is not ticking.

Just run through the game. You have two goals in every level: Key and Treasure. You do not need to worry about hearts, coins, or enemies. Just grab the two items and get to the elevator. Skip the mini-games and cheese the bosses as best you can.

Cheesing the Dinosaur Fish

The Dinosaur Fish feels like the hardest boss in the game to get around, especially when trying to do its "humiliated" achievements. However, a consistent strategy to kill it every time exists. After dodging its spike ball three times from across the lake, the Dinosaur Fish will skip across the water. The player should position themselves in the middle of the screen while this happens. When the Dinosaur Fish takes their third jump, the player should jump as high as they can. The Dinosaur Fish should begin to swing their spike ball, moving it out of the way, allowing the player to land on its head.

In Second Quest, the initial phase of dodging the spike ball is much harder. However, standing Wario next to the spike ball on either side of the screen will keep the Dinosaur Fish's spike ball from hitting him.
