Welcome to the RA guide for Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge, for the Playstation 2!
The game released in 2005 for PS2 and Xbox, developed by Capcom and it proposes itself as a sequel to the 1993 movie Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. The game strikes some similiarity to Devil May Cry, like the combat and its combo counter, the exploration with its secret areas that contain upgrades or collectibles, and the ranking system based on performance. All the while it keeps true to the artistic style of the film. It also features re-arranged music from the film that gets used especially during boss fights, transforming them more into a duet. The game was also released alongside another game, developed by TOSE, that features a story taking place before the events of the film, sort of an origin story, called Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King.
The game takes place some time after the events of the film. Jack Skellington, yet again, found the latest Halloween celebration boring. Seeking for ideas, he goes to Doctor Finkelstein for advice in how to make Halloween more scary and. The Doctor gives him his newest creation: SOUL ROBBER! A green slime that acts like a whip, even capable of grabbing stuff with ease. Jack decides to leave Halloween Town with the Doctor's gift in search for new ideas, and leaves the Doctor in charge of the town. But Lock, Shock, and Barrel took this opportunity to stitch back together Oogie Boogie. He then began to plot his revenge against Halloween Town, but not only that - he also plans to take over all the other holidays, to become the Seven Holidays King. When Jack comes back to his Town, he notices that something was off in his town, and that the new inhabitants are not exactly friendly towards him.
These will be mostly about defeating a boss and retrieving the Holiday Doors. All of these will be naturally earned as you progress through the game.
Because the rest of the set requires it, you have to start on Nightmare Mode. You can still familiarize yourself with the game even at this difficulty, as the enemies in the game just get increased health. Their behaviour doesn't change at all between difficulties.
Can be done while going through the Story. Some of these can be bought from the shop of the game, the Witches' Shop. While others have to be found in the many area in the game that become accessible the further you progress. Some will also be hidden in secret areas named Hidden Places, requiring some exploration to find the entrances to these areas. The game will make you enter in one of these area right at the beginning of the game too.
One thing of note is the Pumpkin Shield. This present for Santa Jack is only available on Easy Mode. It won't be required for the achievement Sandy Claws
. Also, Easy Mode halves the prices of the items at the Witches' Shop. For consistency, the prices from Normal Mode and Nightmare Mode for anything bought at the shop will be used.
This part is to get an overall S Rank on all the stages to ultimately obtain the achievement The Seven Holidays King
(while also earning the corelated achievements). Not only we need to get S rank and complete both secret chapters, we also need to do everything on Nightmare Mode. The difficulty ups the required score to reach this rank higher than Normal Mode, and in some chapters this can get even more difficult. Thankfully, the game tracks the recorded highest rank of a chapter when assigning the overall rank, so we can even do one at a time with no need to do everything at once.
The A Rank achievements will be used to list everything there is to know about S Ranking a chapter. This way both these achievements and the achievement for S ranking everything will be covered together.
Any achievement regarding defeating the bosses without taking damage, and perfoming all Dance Modes in the game without missing an input, while playing on Nightmare Mode.
Bosses, or enemies in general, have their health increased by quite a margine. It becomes more important to keep dodging and to know how to deal with them. Of all the bosses, the most toublesome that may take many tries are for the achievements A Filthy Finale
and You Faced My Rage
.
Dance Mode has instead both its markers at the bottom moved to be more closers to each other. This makes more precision with your inputs required to make it through the songs perfectly.
A section entirely dedicated to the speedrun achievement, The Speedrun Before Christmas
. It may sound rather daunting but the time required is actually forgiving enough. No things like speedrun black magic is necessary, or ever needed, to reach this time. It is still best to having beaten the game once to be more capable to do this one.
While fighting the bosses, notes can be dropped by hitting the bosses themselves or by other enemies or destructible hazards. These notes can be collected to fill up a meter. Completely filling up this meter will commence Dance Mode. Like a rhythm game, you have to press the buttons that'll appear while they are in between the two markers in the bottom part of the screen. Completing the Dance Mode in its entirety will dish out a big amount of damage to the boss. Missing a certain amount of notes will end the dance earlier and lower the damage dealt to the boss.
Each difficulty will change the position of the markers. Higher difficulty level will make the markers move more closer to each other, requiring in turn more precision with the button presses.
This game features a ranking system. This system assings you ranks based on your performance in a chapter, leading to also an overall rank based on what you got. The game ranks you based on 4 factors:
- Time - This is how much time you've spent to beat the chapter. This time ticks not only while you're playing, but also during cutscenes and while going through any menus too.
- Combo - This is highest amount of hits you dish out to the enemies. The combo counter is not broken by getting hit, but it can expire if not hits are dealt for some time.
- Damage - This is the amount of hits taken, may it be from either enemies, traps or enviromental hazards. The lower this amount, the better ranking you'll get. The game assigns you 1 point each time you got hit from anything, while in Nightmare Mode you get 2 points.
- !-Count - This is the amount of !-points you earned. These points can be mainly be gotten by taunting enemies or startling them with presents. They can also be earned with Soul Cycle or with Dance Mode, by hitting the inputs right in the middle of the two markers.
After beating a chapter, you'll earn a rank based on which requirement has been reached: D, C, B, A, S. D being the lowest rank, S the highest, and most difficult to reach rank. The requirements change based on what difficulty has been selected, Nightmare Mode having naturally the hardest records to reach for the highest rank.
The highest score achieved will be saved by the game and rewritten if a better score has been reached. The game uses these recorded records to assign the overall ranking to a chapter, without caring about what overall ranking has been earned at the end of the chapter. That doesn't mean that one has no value, as based on the highest overall rank reached at the end of the chapter will award you Souls, up to 1.000 Souls.
- A successful Taunt empowers your next Soul Robber attack. This will let you either make a stronger normal combo, a stronger Soul Spin or start Soul Cycle.
- You can use Taunt to replenish the enemies' health and also make them more durable to make more combos out of them.
- Soul Slam and Soul Cycle have a duration for how long you can keep using them. If you use Blue Souls before the Soul Robber starts to become red, you'll replenish its durability, extending the duration of the move.
- Pumpkin King has highly damaging attacks. Especially Fire Bomb can take out King Skeletons in a few hits. However the costume is needed in different points in certain chapters, like lighting up stuff or destroying wooden planks, in order to progress. It is suggested to save at least a few a them just in case.
- Santa Jack's presents have different utilities, other than getting !-points: Re-possession to turn enemies in Oogie Mode back to normal and make fights more manageable; Scared Stiff is really good against hidden ghosts or to crowd control many enemies; Cold Front can block a problematic enemy if needed, and it's the only present that deals damage.
- Enemies in Oogie Mode are more dangerous than the normal enemies. Make it a priority to defeat them or to turn them to normal with a Re-possession present. Defeated these enemies does award you with more Souls.
- Hidden enemies will rapidly hit you and knock you down when you get near them. Trying to hit them while hidden will just make them attack anyway. Worst of all, they are always in Oogie Mode. Keep your distance from them, and use the presents to reveal them and defeat them.
- Usually in chapters that have boss fights you can do both combo and !-count requirement by doing a perfect Dance Mode. Pressing the inputs right in the middle between the two markers increases combo count by 1 and also increase the !-count by 1.
- You can extend the invicibility in your dodge by immediately changing to one of your costumes right after executing a dodge. This is because the costume change animation has invincibility, and dodging cancels that animation but not the invincibility from it.
- Getting all the figurines in the game will reward you with Infinite Red Souls. Not only this makes some parts in the game much easier to go through, but this powerup won't lock you out of any achievements. You can choose to wait until getting this power-up to make things easy, but you can also do OK without it.
This is Oogie-Town [5]
Defeat Oogie Boogie's Shadow and recover the Halloween Door
PROGRESSION
He always moves to the right, then to the left, no matter in what side of the arena he's on. You can position yourself in his path to make the most damage.
His dice throw attack is tied to the music. It is possible to know exactly when he'll attack to let you land more hits. Though when he does this attack, he also does a pirouette that can actually damage you, so you have to not be too close to him or dodge in time.
After he has thrown 3 dices, the fight will be in the "WOW" part of the song, which is when he'll attack with the big dices. Even here this attack is tied to the music: when he sings the third "WOW", the dices will start to fall on you. You can dodge them or just simply continue to walk to avoid them.
Damcel in Distress [5]
Defeat the Mega Spider and recover the Valentine's Day Door
PROGRESSION
The fight will be mainly about hitting the weakspot on its back. If you hit its weakspot, or also finishing the Dance Mode successfully, it'll disappear to make tiny spiders appear. Best way to deal with them is by doing a charged up normal Soul Robber combo followed immediately by a Soul Spin. This will hit the majority of the spiders while also bringing them more towards you.
Its cobwebs are the most likely attack it'll do when you're close to it. If these attacks miss, they'll hit the ground and make it sticky. Moving into the webs on the ground won't damage you, but will block you there open for an attack. When at half health, it'll start to shoot three spiderwebs instead.
He can occasionaly perform a charge or a jump attack, more likely if you're far away from it. These attacks can give you a good opportunity to hit its weakspot.
You can react to its attacks more easily by standing on either the left or right side. It'll always have to turn itself in your direction in order to attack you and that will give you enough time to see when to dodge its attacks.
Cerebrum Cleansed [5]
Defeat Dr. Finkelstein and recover the St Patrick's Day Door
PROGRESSION
To defeat him you have to throw the two pieces of brain on the tray right in front of him while his head is open. One way to open his head is to grab him from behind repeatedly until it opens. Best moment to do this is right when his inventions stop moving. Another way is to collect the notes by destroying its inventions, than perform a successful Dance Mode to make his head open (it will also teleport you right in front of you). Trying to open his head does also give some notes too.
He attacks in order, starting with the turrets. The turrets can be avoided by standing a bit further away from them, enough distance so you'll hit them with Soul Robber. After the turrets, the blades will appear. They require some time to get ready giving you time to destroy at least one of them. When active, keep your distance or dodge them as you destroy them. After the blades the turrets will appear again. At this point, if you destroyed his inventions you should have enough notes to enter Dance Mode. If not, he'll do one last attack with the electric pillar that shoots lightning when charged. When you see a red spark, dodge the attack. After this attack he repeats the whole sequence.
If you start the boss fight with the Sleeping Soup in your inventory, gotten from the Secret Chapter in chapter 7, the doctor will be asleep, open for one free hit. This doesn't work on Nightmare Mode however.
Thanks for Giving the Door [5]
Defeat Barrel and his Army of Skeletons and recover the Thanksgiving Door
PROGRESSION
Barrel will always run away from you while sending Skeletons in your way. He also does attack by shooting you if far enough from you.
A good opportunity to hit him is when he jumps. If you hit him while in the air he'll fall, giving you an opportunity to damage him.
You can also stun lock him by taunting him. After a taunt, perform a Soul Spin to deal damage, then a taunt right to keep him in place. Repeat this until he's defeated.
Trick or Treat! [5]
Defeat Lock, Shock and Barrel and recover the Independence Day Door
PROGRESSION
Throw the bear traps and exploding pumpkins back at them. Bear traps will also bind them in place for easier hits. They'll still be able to attack you however.
When the bathtub is destroyed, all three will get out to attack you. Of the three, Shock is the most dangerous, as she can summon statues that will circle around you blocking your movement an leaving you open for attacks from the other two. Lock and Barrel fight the same as like their other fights. Lock will try to plunge onto you from high above with a shadow that will tell you when to dodge his attack. Barrel will shoot you with his machine gun from afar.
You have to follow and attack Shock to not let her attack. You can do fine dodging the other two kid's attacks. If it happens that her and another one are close, you can hit them both with a Fire Bomb. It'll make them fly high in the air while also taking high damage. If they try to get up, that's when you can use another Fire Bomb. Of course, be aware of what the other kid is doing while going for it.
One very effective way to defeat them is to first destroy their bathtub right at the edge of the arena so the three of them won't get off far away from each other. You can make this easier with the beartraps. Immediately when they get out of the bathtub use Fire Bomb to blast all three of them at once up high in the air. When they fall down, wait for them to try to get up before using Fire Bomb again to hit them. You can do this for as many Red Souls as you got and it'll make this fight easier. You still should try to collect the notes so that you can finish them off quickly before running out of Red Souls.
Boogeyman's Wager [10]
Defeat Oogie Boogie and recover the Easter Door
PROGRESSION
Stay close to the central platform and destroy the cards immediately one at a time. If you destroyed one, move towards the empty space to avoid the blades that'll soon come out from the central platform.
The gunners can be destroyed and if done so will damage Oogie Boogie for a bit of damage. You can either go for them, or just go to the opposite side of the arena to not get hit.
After the gunners, the cards will appear again, minus the one you've destroyed earlier. Then the exploding dices appear that you have to hit or throw away so that they won't explode in your face.
The exploding dices will appear again, except this time they won't explode immediately. At this moment Oogie will sing the "WOW" part of the song, and he'll have his mouth wide open. Throw the exploding dices in his mouth and stay right on the empty spot where the dice was to avoid the explosions. If you did it, Oogie will explode and it'll be possible to damage him with Soul Robber. If not, he'll jump away.
Oogie will then make the gunners and the exploding dices appear again that you have to throw at him. After this, everything will start over again.
A Dance of Fire and Ice [10]
Defeat the Fire King and Ice King Skeletons and recover the Christmas Door
PROGRESSION
Both the Fire King Skeleton and the Ice King Skeleton are basically bigger King Skeletons, so just like them the best way to defeat them is to attack them from behind.
Ice King Skeleton can go down very easily via Fire Bombs. Don't use them against the Fire King Skeleton or it'll heal from them.
When either of them turns dark, use a Re-Possession present to turn them back to normal.
Father Christmas' Sorrow [10]
Defeat the Oogie Train to save Sandy
PROGRESSION
Make it a priority to hit the lever closest to where the train is coming to derail it. A red light will signal in what direction its coming from.
The area is full of hidden enemies that make traversing anywhere a challenge. Take your time to throw presents at them to save you some frustration.
While thashing the Oogie Train, remember to not stand in front of it or you'll take damage and be knocked down.
You're King Of Nothing! [25]
Defeat Mega Oogie and save all of the Holidays!
COMPLETION
You can hit his feet to make him fall (get away from where he falls!). This makes his head reachable with your attacks. Be aware that staying on the ground makes it easy to be targeted by his attacks.
You can also get on the upper part of the arena where you can use the gas leaks. When he comes close to one, light them up with any attacks of the Pumpkin King for a good amount of damage. The gas leaks will reappear after a while.
He always growls when ready to attack. If he's close, he'll try to smack you. Another attack that he can do anywhere is him throwing up objects at you. It's sort of difficult to dodge this one because of how fast they'll fly at you. It's easier to dodge it the further away you're from him. You can also drop down the arena or get in the upper floor to make him stop the attack while he's executing it.
After the fight, you'll transition into Dance Mode. This one is the hardest in the game, and anytime you miss a button you'll lose health. The last parts of the song are hard and may take away some health from you. As long as you have enough health to go through this, you don't have much to worry about.
Jack Must Die! [25]
Beat the game on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
You'll earn this after beating chapter 24 on Nightmare Mode.
The game has three difficulties available right at the start: Easy Mode, Normal Mode, and Nightmare Mode. What specifically changes between difficulties is as follows:
- The enemies' and bosses' amount of health. Their behaviour remains unchanged.
- How close the indicators are to each other during Dance Mode.
- The requirements for each Rank. Easy Mode has two elements that are exclusive to this mode: the items at the Witches' Shop get their prices halved; and the Pumpkin Shield will be available to be purchased at the shop. This present for the Santa Jack Costume renders Jack immune to damage for a short period.
Nightmare Mode puts the ranking requirements much higher compared to Normal Mode. The indicators during Dance Mode are the closest to each other, requiring better timing with your button presses to get good inputs. Enemies and Bosses will have their health increased much higher to tank even more hits, but their behaviour remains the same.
Fire Hazard [10]
Defeat Mega Oogie 1st Phase without using the Pumpkin King Costume
Without the Pumpkin King power, this fight will require quite the patience. You'll have to rely entirely on Soul Robber and to consistently survive against all of his attacks. You can also use your Crystal Bottles to replenish any health lost when needed.
Smokin' Sexy Style!! [5]
Get a Pumpkin King Combo Rank for the first time [Dances don't count]
Perform a total combo of 150 without breaking it to reach Pumpkin King combo rank.
You'll have many opportunities to do this, but the easiest to do this is in Chapter 3. During the Lock's Fight, perform Soul Cycle, and keep it going using Blue Souls before the Soul Robber becomes red (sometimes the enemies drop a Blue Soul too). This will guarantee you to reach the Pumpkin King combo rank.

You're likely to earn this, along with the other ones, if you didn't complete the Secret Chapters when beating the game. You can always do them at your leisure, even after beating the game.
The Seven Holidays King [50]
Beat the game with an overall "S" ranking on all levels and successfully complete both Secret Chapters on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
To reach an overall S rank, you need to earn all S ranks in each chapter. Not only that, but you also have to do this on Nightmare Mode.
You can make this easier to yourself this way: the game keeps track of the highest recorded ranks, and will automatically assign you an overall rank of the chapter based on these recorded ranks, independently by what overall rank you got at chapter completion. This means that you can enter into a chapter and earn just one S rank, then earn the remaining S ranks at your pace, and when you got all the S ranks in said chapter the game will assign you an S rank for that chapter. It is possible to get all the S ranks in one go if you wish, but if some of them result too difficult, it is suggested to do one at a time.
You're also needed to complete both Secret Chapters in the game to be eligible for S rank. These chapters can only be done in specific chapters and do not have any ranking requirements to them. However any hits or time wasted in these will still be tracked for the ranking of the normal chapter, as you're technically still in that chapter. Because of this, you can't feasibly go for these Secret Chapters and S ranks at the same time. You can still do these chapters at any time, so you may as well hold off to them until you're done with the chapter itself.
When everything is done, all you have to do is either go through the credits at the end of the game, or check the journal in Jack's house, to check the game stats and the rankings in the game, earning you this achievement and any other ranking achievement.

Combo
Don't use the first Skeletons that'll appear. Wait for the Skeletons that appear during Oogie Boogie's announcement. These ones will spawn quickly and infinitely until Oogie starts laughing. Use Soul Spin and taunt them when low on health to replenish their health.
Damage
Shadow Oogie can actually hit you with his pirouette when he throws the dices. Make sure to keep your distance from him. The ghosts he calls will actually come after you. If they are near you, Soul Spin can take care of them.

You can get these by perfecting the Dance Mode against Shadow Oogie.

This chapter has only 2 obbligatory fights that you have to do to progress: inside the manhole, and in front of the main gate. You can skip everything else.
Combo
The enemies in Hidden Place 1 may prove difficult because of the Heat Skeletons and their boomerang attacks. You can instead use the ones in front of the gate after meeting with Clown.
Damage
The manhole can be sort of a dangerous place due to the Heat Skeletons. They can throw their bones even off-screen, and in Oogie Mode they throw them much faster. You can Soul Spin these attacks to send them back to them, but be extra careful when too many are around.
!-Count
You can get these in the sewer if you can deal with the Heat Skeletons. Otherwise, do these in front of the gate after finding Clown.

Combo
You can get some of the combos during the Lock's fight with Soul Cycle. When the Orc Skeletons appear (the yellow ones), it is better to let Soul Cycle end and get combos with Soul Spin to not risk defeating the remaining Skeletons.
!-Count
Right at the start of the Lock fight you'll be right in front of three Skeletons in range for your taunt. You can spam Taunt constantly against them until you've reached the needed amount.

Time
The tombstones can be lifted up more easily with a Soul Robber Lvl 2. Though if you still need to buy it, going to the Witches Shop while attempting to make it in time for the rank will cut it too close to the required time. Because of this, you can wait and buy it later on, than come back and try this chapter again.
Below is a map with the location of the tombstones.
A tip to save time: when you reach the Old Graveyard, don't go near the tomb on top of the hill, the one after the statues that spit fire. Go instead for the one near the building full of spiderwebs and close it. Then go back to the one on top of the hill and close it. That'll make the enemies that were supposed to be here not appear, and you'll be free to use the spiral near there to get to the other tombstone.
Combo
The Skeleton Trolls can be used, but are sort of difficult to deal with. If you taunt them, they always right after roar and immediately attack. You can take advantage of this by taunting, make 2 attacks, and when they start to roar taunt again to effectively get them stuck.
If you can't deal with the troll, there are also Skeletons that'll appear near the tombstone to the right of where you start the chapter in to get combos. Much easier to deal with and six can appear.
Damage
You are vulnerable when trying to close the tombstones. Be quick in closing them or wait for the enemies to not be around you. In the Old Graveyard there are statues that spit fire. Wait for them to throw fire and move on.
Use the suggestion made in the Time part for the Old Graveyard to make this part easier.
!-Count
Anywhere can work, really. But if you have difficulties with the Trolls, use the Blue Skeletons that should appear on the tombstones near the dead tree for some easier targets.

Time
Lock can potentially waste some time here. Blue Soul and Soul Spin will deal massive amount of damage against him, but you need to hit him, of course. Either hit him when he's in the air or try to stun lock him with taunts.
For the Mega Spider, take any opportunity you can to hit its weakspot, as well as keeping an eye out for its attacks. It is faster to force it to reveal its weakspot by moving on a side, wait for it to attack, then dodge its attack and move quickly to the weakspot. The most damage you can do against the tiny spiders is a charged up normal combo followed up immediately by a Soul Spin. This will hit most of the spiders and attract some of them near you.
Combo
This can be done through Dance Mode. You can also do it while outside or against Lock, but it's much easier with Dance Mode.
Damage
Awaiting for it to attack while standing on any of its sides will give you some time to react better. It is also possible to stand a bit further to it, then waiting for it to either do its jump attack or charge attack. This way it's easier to dodge, but this tactic may waste you some time.
!-Count
Same as Combo. Can be done outside the boss fight, but it is better to do a perfect combo in Dance Mode.

The Trick and Tricks can make you waste some time with their traps. You can defuse them by hitting them from far enough to reach with Soul Robber. Don't even try to dodge the traps.
When deactivating the electric field on the bridge, remember to follow the tube to the left for a quick way back at the entrance and for some Souls. You'll be needing them to buy the Bone Biscuits to Igor to proceed. If you still don't have enough, use the Hidden Place on top of the Town Hall to get some of them.
Shock's fight can be done quickly by using Soul Cycle. Make to have some Blue Souls before talking with Igor the first time.
Combo
Soul Cycle during the Shock's fight will bring you to this amount easily. If for some reason it didn't work, you can use the Hidden Place on top of the Town Hall as a back up plan.
!-Count
Use the Trick and Treats in Acid Works. Theoretically speaking, you should get some points with Soul Cycle during the Shock's fight, somewhere like 20 or so. You still need to get some of them from the Trick and Treats to reach the right amount.

Time
Do not go for the Secret Chapter. It'll make it impossible to reach the time required.
Take your time in the area with the generator. Getting hit will cause the object you're carrying to drop and break. Wait for the electric gates to go off, then make way to the generator breaking the garbage and making new objects to use.
After destroying the generator, many traps will appear on the way to the lab. Don't get too close to the mechanical teeths and destroy them safely from afar with Soul Robber. The guillotine's heads can be deflected easily with a Soul Spin.
Inside the lab, hide from the boulders and move quickly to the top.
Combo
Best time to do this is when you get to the top near the elevator. When you're in front of the elevator that takes you to the Nightmare Lab, go to the left and Soul Jump into the spiral to reach the door to Igor's Room. The room has Trick and Treats you can use for combos.
Damage
Many points made in the Time part also applies here. More important to note are the mechanical teeths and the guillotine. They can easily damage you if you don't watchout for them.
For the boulders, it is possible to dodge them by using the dodge extended trick. But it requires very precise timing to get it right. Just hide from the boulders to be more safe.
!-Count
You can't taunt the statues or the guillotines, nor you would have time to do these with the timer while going for the stairs. Your best, maybe only place, is in Igor's Room at the end of the ramp.

Time
Fun fact: this is the hardest level to get S ranks in one go.
Fastest method is to just open his head yourself and throw the pieces of brain at him. The best moment to try this is when the the turrets are getting retracted. You'll have enough time to open his head and throw a piece of brain at him.
You can also make it in time with just doing Dance Mode, As long as we collect the notes fast enough. You can collect even more notes during the blades part by standing in front of the blade behind the Doctor, then attacking the blade in front of him instead. Soul Robber will also hit the blade behind hit while hitting the blade in front. This works better with Lvl 2 because of how fast the 3rd attack is. Not so much with Lvl 3.
Opening his head does give out notes, even if a tiny amount. If you're not going for the throws, at least open his head while he's done attacking.
Combo
This can only be done while performing a Dance Mode with perfect combo.
Damage
Stand far enough from the machine guns to hit them safely before they reach you. They'll also appear immediately after the blades. Be mindful of that, and position yourself immediately when the blades are getting retracted.
The blades can be destroyed quickly with Fire Bombs, though that also means you won't get many notes by doing so.
If he uses his lightning pillar, dodge after the lightning becomes red.
!-Count
Can only be done by doing a perfect Dance Mode.

Time
You have to go from the Nightmare Lab to the Pumpkin Patch, right at the left of the main gate of Halloween Town.
When you progress through the Pumpkin Patch, Oogie Boogie will start to speak. Normally continuing through this area where the announcement starts will make enemies appear, which includes Trolls and Ghosts. You can simply stand still and let the announcement finish to make just a few enemies appear in this area. Though you will need to take care of them anyway, or you won't be able to jump into the spirals.
Combo
Use Igor's Room, right to the left after you exit the Nightmare Lab. The Hidden Place 2 on top of the Town Hall is also another option.
Damage
This chapter will introduce the hidden enemies, right at the entrance of the Pumpkin Patch. Trying to run and dodge past them is very risky. It safer to throw the Re-Possession presents at them to reveal them and make them less dangerous.
!-Count
Igor's Room is a good option to get some easy !-points.
Barrel's Maze [5]

!-Count | 24 | 30 | 30 |
Time
For being a maze, this chapter is very straightforward. Just hit the switches and proceed. One switch will require you to jump on a spiral to reach it. After hitting that switch, jump onto the spiral to get back where you were and run all the way east until you get past a bridge to finish the chapter.
Combo
I'm afraid you either have to use the Hidden Place 9, behind the waterfall (it has ghosts, so it might be a bit annoying), or the Trolls that appear right in front of the bridge that ends the chapter. Otherwise, you can go back to Halloween Town and get to Hidden Place 2, on top of the Town Hall, to get the needed combos.
Damage
Avoid the Trolls and mind the guillotine on top of the hill after the second switch. Soul Spin if a head is close to you to redirect it to the guillotine.
!-Count
Use the three Trolls that spawn in front of the bridge at the end of this area. Lump them together then either taunt them or throw Re-possession presents at them.

Time
Each room in the Pumpkin Head requires all enemies to be defeated to proceed.
The first room even with normal combos can be taken care of.
The room with the ghosts it is more effective to use Soul Cycle to make it easier.
In the third room with the hidden enemies, use the Re-possession presents to make them easier to defeat. The three hidden enemies to the right side are Orc Skeletons. The three to the left side are King Ghosts. For the ones to the left, throw a Re-possession present to one of them, then when the ghosts is out defeat it with a Soul Slam. Do this to each of them, one at a time.
In the final room with Barrel, use the same method as with Lock. Taunt him, Soul Spin, then taunt again immediately and repeat until defeated. If it doesn't work, follow him and catch him while in the air.
Combo
The first room with the Skeletons is a good place. Third room, with the skeletons hidden on the right side, is also an option.
Damage
Really the only room to mind is the third one with the hidden enemies. Expose them first, then take care of them.
!-Count
You can just use the first room for this. It would be faster here, with the number of skeletons you can taunt at once, than with any room.

Time
Do not attempt the Secret Chapter, or you won't make it in time.
This chapter is very easy and can be done with an even less time than what is required. All you need to do is just what is required to end the chapter.
Exit the Pumpkin Patch area, go to the Residential Area with the key, scare Clown with a Re-possession present, then talk to the Witch. Go to the Nightmare Lab, talk to the Doctor and then go to the left and iteract with a toolbox to get the Bone Driver. Then go back to Clown, scare him again with a present and use the tool on him.
Combo
A new area opens up in the Doctor's Lab by this point in the game: Sally's Room. It's located near the end of the ramp in Runaway Ramp. This room has tons of skeletons appearing here, and the only are where it is possible to reach this amount of combo.
Not all of the skeletons are in Oogie Mode, but the ones that are can potentially break your combo. Always make sure to be constantly dodging, while also hitting the skeletons to keep the combo up. When you find a good opportunity to get close to the skeletons to make a Soul Spin, do so while making sure to also hit the ones in Oogie Mode. If it is dangerous to approach, you can try to hit them to give yourself an opportunity to use Soul Spin on them.
If you mess up, you can always exit the room and re-enter to retry.
Damage
You can finish this chapter without ever getting into any fight. All the places where you need to go have no enemies that can appear, which makes this very easy to do.
!-Count
Sally's Room has many enemies that you can use for !-points. It is dangerous to get close to them and use taunt so use your Re-possession presents instead. Make sure that they're all bundled together so that you can startle all of them.

Time
You first need to enter the Vampire Castle and read the message left behind to make the Vampire Bats appear.
Use the map for an idea of where they are located.
The first one is right in front of their house. The second and third ones are close-by in the Towers of Torment. The fourth one is in an Hidden Place, reachable through the Sewage Slums, going past the wooden planks in the southern area. You can reach the Sewage Slums by going through the corridor with the scythes at the start of the Towers of Torment and then dropping down from the pit at the end there. After getting past the wooden planks, go up the stairs and jump onto the spiral. Defeat the enemies here and then use the spiral to the north to be transported right in front of the entrance to the Hidden Place that has the Vampire Bat.
You can make it easier to catch them by luring them to your direction with any present. Of course, they can get scared if you suddenly run at them, so either close the gap with a dodge or wait for the right moment when you're positive you can grab them.
Combo
Consider using the Hidden Place where you find one of the Vampire Bats. Stepping into the center of this area will make Orc Skeletons you can use for some combos.
Damage
There are different parts in this whole area to be careful for.
King Skeletons will be introduced in this Chapter, and they're very annoying to deal with. They can only be hit from behind, and their attacks are rather hard to avoid because of how wide they are. You need to fight a couple of them to proceed to the Vampire Bat in the Hidden Place. Either be careful while hitting them from behind or Fire Bomb for some high damage (though you need some Red Souls to get to the Hidden Place in the first place, be mindful of that).
The scythes at the entrance of Towers of Torment can be dodged with the right timing or just walking through them at the right time.
In the Towers of Torment, up where you should find the second Vampire Brother, a fishbone can sometimes appear at the center. Wait for it to appear before moving. Use the presents to attract the bat to your direction, rather than risking it by moving around too much.
When you get out the Hidden Place with the Vampire Bat inside, you'll need to drop down from the platform to go back to the main area of the Sewage Slums. Down there are a bunch of hidden enemies and a gargoyle you need to watchout for.
!-Count
Either the enemies that can appear in the Hidden Place with the Vampire Bat, or outside with the hidden enemies.
Do note that you actually lose !-points if you scare away the Vampire Bats. You'd need to walk slowly when they're near, but sometimes they get scared anyway. It's not really consistent this behaviour. It is better to go for the !-points when you've captured all the Vampire Bats

All of the enemies can be skipped, except in one area that is in a big platform with some Skeletons and Heat Skeletons blocking you from using a spiral. You need to defeat them to proceed, but by that point you'll be near the end of the chapter.
You most likely won't have enough time to go for the Golden Pumpkin Here because of how long it may take to get to it.
Combo
You can use about any enemy you'll find in this chapter. Even the hidden enemies that you'll find at the entrance of Mayor's Yard can be used, alongside getting some !-points.
Damage
Do mind the hidden enemies found at the entrance. They are all placed in such a tiny area that makes it difficult to go through without getting hit. Reveal with Re-possession presents from a far and patiently take care of them.
The rest of the enemies in the Mayor's House can be avoided (except for the obbligatory one), but can tend to land a hit if you don't pay attention to them.

You can get these with the hidden enemies. Preferably with the Re-possession presents.

You should go for the faster method against them. Destroy the bathtub at the endge of the arena, use the beartraps to help you lock it in place for a bit. If that doesn't work, try to group 2 of them together and blast them with Fire Bombs.
Make sure to also collect notes to finish them off quickly.
Combo
You'll reach this amount with Dance Mode.
Damage
Wait out for them throwing their traps. They can even throw two in succession if they can.
For the second phase, the strategy written in the time part makes sure that they won't be able to attack you. If not, make sure to at least keep Shock occupied. The other two are at least more bearable to deal with theri attacks.

You'll also reach this amount with Dance Mode.

As it can be confusing to remember the pathing to take through this chapter, below it's written the exact pathing to take.
Magma Maze
Jump onto the spiral next to you. Then jump onto the next one continuing to the right.
Jump the northern spiral. Wait for the platform to arrive and then walk on it.
After arriving at its destination, walk to the right. Wait for the platform ahead to stop under the skeleton then latch on the spiral to drop onto the platform.
Walk south to a set of spiral you have to jump to. Walk past the first see-saw than jump onto the spiral. Wait for the moving platform to arrive then walk onto it. There will be turrets that'll shoot skulls at you. Wait for it to shoot or deflect them with Soul Spin, then move.
Wait for the spinning blades to stop, then jump onto the spirals. When you've reached the other side, avoid the flaming statues and proceed to through the door.
Caged Kings Interact with the cage shaped like a Christmas Tree. Finish the fight with the Mega Spider and interact with that cage again.
Passage of Pain
Get onto the first platform and the next. Get on top of the third one and light up the candle with the Pumpkin King Costume to make it move again.
Jump onto the spiral and move to the south where you should see a platform coming up. When you get onto this platform, you can also drop from it moving to the right to end up on the platform below. Go north and get onto the purple platform. Then jump onto the spiral at the end of its path.
Go through the see-saws, jump onto the spirals, then wait for the spinning blades before jumping onto the spirals. For the last spiral, wait for the platform to stop closers to the skeleton before jumping.
Move south where you'll find another platform that goes up and down. Wait to move all the way down the jump onto the last spiral. Finally move north through the passage.
Combo
While going through the Magma Maze, you should pass through a big skull you can go into with a spiral. There's a Hidden Place there that has Orc Skeletons you can use for some combos.
Damage
Avoid the traps, naturally. But watchout for the one that shoots skulls in the Magma Maze. Wait for it to shoot before moving. You can use Soul Spin to redirect the skulls but you won't be able to destroy it.
For the Mega Spider, it's the same strategy as its boss fight in chapter 5. Play it safe, and wait for the right opportunity to hit its weakspot.
!-Count
Use the Hidden Place mentioned in the Combo part. You may want to use presents here because of the number of skeletons.

Combo
This can only be done with a perfect combo through Dance Mode.
Damage
The trap to be more worried about would be the cards. Destroy one fast and get a bit closer to its place to avoid the blades that'll appear at the center. The Gunners can be avoided by just walking to the other side of the arena, or at least far away from their range of attack. The exploding dices have to be ridden off by throwing them away or at Oogie Boogie while his mouth is open to make a safe space to stand in from the explosions.

This one also can only be done through Dance Mode.

Remember that you need to interact with the Mayor, then the Hanging Tree, and then the Zero's Dog House in the Tomb of Tears to be able to find the Spiral Hill Key.
As you basically just need to interact with people and things to get going here, the best and only suggestion here is to watchout for the statues and dodge the attacks.
Combo
Just use the Hidden Place on top of the Town Hall. It's literally on top of you where you're starting this chapter.
Damage
Nothing much is going on here to be especially aware off, besides the statues that can land a hit if you don't watchout for them.

Use the same Hidden Place mentions in the Combo section.

The map will help you understand where the paths can take you:
You need to first return the doors you have to have access to the areas of the Oogie's Doors. A suggested pathing would be:
Independence Day Door > St. Patrick's Day Door > Halloween Oogie Door > Valentine's Day Oogie Door > Thanksgiving Oogie Door > Easter Door
Here are some suggestions to complete the Oogie Door's trials more effeciently:
Halloween Oogie Door - Use Scared Stiff to the hidden enemies to the right to block the King Ghosts and defeat them easily.
Thanksgiving Oogie Door - Use Soul Cycle to defeat all the enemies as fast as possible.
Valentine's Day Oogie Door & Easter Door - Use Fire Bombs to take out the King Skeletons faster.
When done, return to Spiral Hill to change the doors.
Combo
You'll have enough enemies during the Thanksgiving Oogie Door trial to get to this number. Use Soul Cycle and replenish its duration with Blue Souls. Even if you use all your Blue Souls, you may not reach the required combo. If this happens, drop Soul Cycle and hit the enemies with normal combos.
Damage
It can be very easy to take some hits during any of the trials. Followthe suggestions in the Time portion can mitigate the risk, as well as always keep dodging!
!-Count
You may get some of these if you do what is suggested for the Thanksgiving Oogie Door trial. You can also use the skeletons located outside the Valentine's Door area.

Ice King Skeleton can go down easily with a few Fire Bombs, while Fire King you'll have to hit it in the back with Soul Robber. Help yourself with a Blue Soul when a good opportunity to hit its back presents itself.
If they become dark, you won't be able to damage them. You have to immediately turn them back to normal with a Re-possession present to be able to attack them again.
Combo
Make sure to defeat at least one of them (likely the Ice King Skeleton) to do this.
Hitting them in front will make them block your attack, so limit yourself to just use normal combos on their backs. It is also necessary because of how wide their attacks are, easily interrupting your combo.
Damage
Hitting both of them with Fire Bomb will make it safe to take down Ice King Skeleton, since Fire King Skeleton will be unable to act because it's absorbing the damage.
Unfortunately you'll have to defeat Fire King Skeleton by hitting its back. They can easily damage you with their attacks if you stand too close to them. Make sure to keep your distance while trying to hit them from behind.
!-Count
Use the Re-possession present from a far for safety. Do not taunt them or they'll become dark and invincible.

Then go to the path that opens up in the area where you can go to the Thanksgiving Door and the Easter Door to get to the Seven Holidays area, which is where you can return the Christmas Door to its place.
Combo
There are some Skeletons outside of the Valentine's Day Door area that you can combo with.

No trials will be here this time. You shouldn't much to worry about this time around.

Remember, you need to speak with the Elf near the christmas tree to be able to find the decorations.
Below is the map of the area with the locations of the decorations.
You shouldn't have any problems getting to the Green Ornament. You just need to open the house of the Green Elf by using Fire Bomb to light up the three lantens in front of the house, then defeat the enemies inside the house.
The Red Ornament is sadly found at random in any tree in the area. While going for the other decorations, make sure to hit the trees in your path to find it more effeciently.
The Candle and the Star can waste you precious time if you miss the train. For the Star, Remember that the train can be seen in the background. When it's nearing the tunnel in the background, press the switch and wait for it on top of the tunnal where it should appear, near the Green Elf House.
For the Christmas Stocking, position yourself closer to the penguins and cats in the carousel to more reliably send back the pumpkins with Soul Spin.
Once you got all of them, talk to the Elf again.
Combo
Outside is unlikely to find enemies to make combos with. Use one of the houses to find enemies. It's better the Green Elf house, as the Red Elf house has the annoying hidden enemies.
Damage
Red Elf house can be risky if you don't pay attention. The carousel can also be risky if you mess up Soul Spin or get too close to be hit by the pumpkin's explosion.
!-Count
You might as well do this while at the Red Elf house. Throw presents at the hidden enemies while keeping your distance from them.

It's difficult to avoid the hidden enemies here. You're better off throwing a Re-possession present at them with Santa Jack to dispatch them before taking on the train.
When attacking the train, use Blue Souls to deal more damage to it and don't be right in front of it to not be hit by the train.
Combo
You can just use the train to get to this amount. If you get close, you'll get hit, so don't use Soul Spin and just use normal combos.
Damage
Make sure to always throw Re-possession presents at the hidden enemies, as they can really easily hit you if you're near them.\

You most likely will need to do this anyway, but throw the Re-possession presents at the hidden enemies. There are many in the area that you can use.

Needless to say to not get hit as much as possible to not waste time in this phase.
Combo
Only way to reach this is to do a full combo of Dance Mode in the second phase. It's the hardest in the game and
Damage
Use the dodge trick to reliably dodge his slap attack. If he does his throw up attack, while it is true that taking damage will make him end his attack earlier, you can also just drop down the arena to make him end his attack.
Missing notes during the second phase does count as taking damage. Make sure to prepare yourself for the Dance Mode.

These can only be gotten by doing Dance Mode in the second phase of the fight.
Mostly, the part of the Dance Mode to be aware about is the last part. It'll throw you sequences that are complicated that require to be learn to go through without missing.
Nightshade Froggy Worm [10]
Obtain the Sleeping Soup [Ch. 7 - Secret Chapter]
This Secret Chapter can be started by speaking to Sally at the Tomb of Tears near the big tree in ** Chapter 7**.
She'll ask you to find three ingredients to make the Sleeping Soup: Deadly Nightshade, Worm's Wart and Frog's Breath.
The Deadly Nightshade is found in Hidden Place 5, in the Tomb of Tears. It's located down the path behind the big tree. Go past the statues by destroying them with the exploding pumpkins, then enter the open grave covered in vines you should see to the right of this open area. Defeat the enemies inside to get the Deadly Nightshade.
The Worm's Wart can be bought by the Witches' Shop. Speak to the Witch to the right to buy one. You need 1000 Souls to buy it. If you don't have them, you could get to any Hidden Places close by to earn some, or defeat the hidden enemies at the entrance of the Pumpkin Patch.
The Frog's Breath is found in the Doctor's Junk Yard In the Doctor's Lab. Right before the stairs that'll take you to the Runaway Ramp, destroy the wooden planks to the left with the Pumpkin King Costume to enter the Doctor's Junk Yard. Get to the elevator that you should find on the left side of the area and go up. Bring the lantern to the left closer to the other two, then use a Fire Bomb to light all three at the same time to disable the gate. You should see many frogs at the other side of the gate, but you're only interested in the one that emits a green breath. Find one of these frogs, then move slowly to them and try to grab them. Don't run at them or you'll scare them. If they do so, go back to the gate, wait for them to reappear and try again. It may take some luck to capture one.
When you get all three ingredients, go back to Sally to finish the Secret Chapter and get the Sleeping Soup.
The Sleeping Soup has actual usage during the Dr. Finklestein boss fight. If it is in your inventory, at the start of the fight he'll be put to sleep, letting you open his head and throw a brain piece at him. This will not work in Nightmare Mode sadly.
Bony Cookie [10]
Help Igor get his Bone Biscuit back [Ch. 12 - Secret Chapter]
This Secret Chapter can be accessed by first speaking with Dr. Finklestein, then to Igor, both at the Nightmare Lab in Chapter 12.
Igor will tell you that his Bone Biscuits disappeared while he was eating them close to a manhole. The manhole in question can be found to the left of the entrance to the lab. You should notice a manhole rattling going this way. Interact with it and you'll get to a Hidden Place 7 with a Mega Spider inside.
This Mega Spider is identical to the Mega Spider you've fought in chapter 5 so anything for boss applies to this one as well.
After defeating it, you'll get the Bone Biscuits. Go back to Igor and give them back to him to finish this Secret Chapter.
Skellinton's Revenge [10]
Defeat Oogie's Boogie's Shadow without taking damage on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
He will throw his dices always in rhythm with the music. The first time is after he says "Pumpkin King", the second is a bit after Jack says "Just who do you think you are?", and the third time is after Jack says "I'm fixing everything". You can also dodge these dices by just moving out of the way. Do not stand too close to him whenever he throws his dices or he'll hit you with his twirl.
His big dices are not a problem to evade if you just continue to run in one direction.
If the Halloween Ghosts get too close to you, defeat them by Soul Spinning them.
I'm the Oogie Boogie Man! [5]
Get a Full Combo in the dance against Shadow Oogie on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
Even on Nightmare Mode, this is a very easy to do a full combo.
Arachnophobia [10]
Defeat the Mega Spider without taking damage on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
Stay at any of its sides to bait its attacks. Dodge the cobwebs as soon as he's about to shoot them and take that opportunity to go for the weakspot. When enraged, he'll shoot two in quick succession, then does a bit of a pause before shooting the third one. It is possible to dodge these attacks, even using the third shot to make it position itself in a way to expose the weakspot. You can also wait it out outside of its range for an opportunity.
Another way to deal with this fight is to stand far away from it and wait for it to do either the charge or the jump attack. Then dodge them and quickly hit its weakspot.
We Can Take This Town Back, Me and You [5]
Get a Full Combo in the dance against the Super Spider on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
This dance will introduce directional buttons and longer sequences. Despite being harder than the first one, it's still easy to do.
My Whip Will Slice You! [10]
Defeat Dr. Finkelstein without taking damage on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
Don't even think about doing this the "quick way" if you don't know what you're doing. You're likely to be shot by the turrets or be hit by the blades. You are much safer to just collect notes and rely on Dance Mode to have his head open. Do try to open his head to get some notes from it.
Turrets can be safely destroyed by standing far enough from them. Their shots won't reach you immediately when they start shooting. If you go to another turret right after destroying one however, you may be blasted immediately. If it happens that you need to move past a turret to reposition yourself, move to the edge of the arena and dodge their shots.
When the blades appear, you can hit them as soon as they appear. You can even destroy them easily with a Fire Bomb, even better if it hits two of them. When they start to move, stay on the empty spaces between them. When they stop, immediately take position for the turrets.
For the electric pillar, wait for it to emit a red spark before dodging. Though It won't shoot lighting immediately when it does this.
You’ll Praise Oogie No More! [5]
Get a Full Combo in the dance against Dr. Finkelstein on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
This dance will introduce repeating notes, and it'll also be faster than the last one. Because of the notes repeating... it makes this one also easy to pass.
You Faced My Rage [25]
Defeat Lock, Shock and Barrel without taking damage on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
Use Blue Soul against the bathtub to make the first phase shorter. A better time to use it is after you hit it with a beartrap to block its movement. Either Soul Spin the thrown pumpkins or throw them back at them if they land on the ground.
For the second phase, try to go for the method of locking them all down in a corner with Fire Bombs. Destroy their bathtub at the edge of the arena so that they get off together, and use Fire Bombs immediately when they get off and whenever they try to get up. This way they won't be able to to anything, and you can get notes to finish them off with Dance Mode (you need to drop them to at least 1/3 of their health to finish them).
I suggest going for this to make it easier. If you couldn't pull it off, make sure to attack Shock and evade the other two as best as possible. Do use a Fire Bomb if you can hit both Shock and at least one other kid.
Hail to Mister Oogie! [5]
Get a Full Combo in the dance against Lock, Shock and Barrel on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
This dance will pick up pace halfway through. Be ready for that.
I'm the Only Pumpkin King! [25]
Defeat Oogie Boogie without taking damage on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
Be quick with the cards, and remember to position yourself correctly. Be close to the central platform, then when you destroy one of the cards move slightly towards the empty space, enough to avoid the blades from the central platform. If you have Soul Robber Lvl 3 you'll destroy one in one combo. Ironically, the third and fourth hit will move you forward slightly, so keep that in mind.
Seriously, avoid the gunners. They're not worth your time and energy.
For the exploding dices, you should throw two of them at Oogie Boogie to give yourself much more safe space from the explosions. They won't deal extra damage to him, but better safe than sorry.
Whoa oh! Whoa oh! [5]
Get a Full Combo in the dance against Oogie on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
This dance will have a sequence that repeats two buttons in different order. Try to memorize this part well.
Half-Cold Half-Hot [10]
Defeat the Fire King and Ice King without taking damage on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
Fire Bomb will stop the Fire King Skeleton from doing anything letting you destroy Ice King Skeleton safely.
As for the Fire King Skeleton, you have to move behind it to hit it. Watchout for its attacks then take the opportunity to attack it from behind when possible. Consider using a Blue Soul even to finish him fast.
A Filthy Finale [25]
Defeat Mega Oogie 1st Phase without taking damage on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
Don't go for his feet. It makes you an easy target for his attacks. Especially the throw up attack will be harder to dodge from down there. You'd also not be able to use the gas leaks to speed up the fight.
Make use of the invincibility extension to dodge his attacks. If you feel like you can't dodge an attack, you can fall down or get in the upper part based on where you are to make his attacks stop while he's executing them.
It's Payback Time! [10]
Get a Full Combo in the dance against Mega Oogie on Nightmare Mode
DIFFICULTY SPECIFIC
This dance also has that same sequence as the earlier Oogie Boogie boss fight, but in here it is way harder than that. More specifically, the last 2 parts of the dance can take you off guard if you're not ready.
The Speedrun Before Christmas [50]
Beat the game in 3 hours or less [New File, Save File Timer, Any Difficulty]
This speedrun is not that scary at all. The time required is very generous if you know your way through the game, and no such things like usual speedrun black magics are ever involved to make it to that time.
Still, there are different suggestions to be made that can help you greatly with this achievement:
- It is suggested to play on Easy Mode to make the enemies less tanky to save time.
- The timer moves through cutscenes and pause menu, but also during the the ranking screen and the save game screen. Skip through every cutscene, and make sure to not spend too much time on any screen.
- Do consider saving after finishing a chapter. Not only to save the progress made, to also in case you need a re-do with certain chapters for a better time.
- Some fights are obbligatory to progress, either because the way will be blocked or because you'll be unable to use the spirals if enemies are nearby. It'll be noted if a fight is obbligatory.
- The only upgrades that you'll ever need are the Soul Robber's and the Pumpkin King Costume. You can consider the Re-possession present upgrades if you feel the need for them.
- It's not necessary to go after the Crystal Skulls, but you may go after some fast and easy to get Golden Pumpkins to extend your life bar.
- Consider getting some S ranks in each chapter. They reward you 1000 Souls which does make getting upgrades quicker and eliminates the need to go out of your way looking for Souls. Easy Mode also reduces the prices of the items at the Witchew' Shop so you won't even need that many Souls in total.
Below is a walktrough that can be used if needed. Not only it is written what is needed to beat each chapter, but different suggestions will be made in specific points that can help in the long run.
Chapter 1 - Jack's Return
[Town Square - Fountain Area]
Fight the three skeletons, and the next three skeletons that appear right after.
When Oogie Boogie begins his announcement, the skeletons will continue to spawn endlessly until he stops talking. When he starts to laugh, the skeletons will stop spawning. Defeat them right when he starts laughing.
After the cutscene, move immediately in the Town Hall to start the boss fight.
[Town Square - Town Hall]
[Boss Fight - Shadow Oogie]
Use your Blue Souls and hit him constantly with your Soul Robber. Collect the notes to defeat him faster with Dance Mode.
After the fight, you'll get the Halloween Door.
Chapter 2 - The Witching Hour
[Town Square - Town Hall]
Talk to Corpse Kid. Then move to the Witches' Shop north from where you are. Enter the door to the shop, ignoring the enemies.
[Town Square - Witches' Shop]
If needed, stock up on Blue Souls. Most likely you won't have anything else that you can buy.
After the cutscene, exit immediately.
[Town Square - Town Hall]
Run back to the fountain and talk to Corpse Kid again. Then interact with the rattling manhole to enter Hidden Place 1.
[Town Square - Hidden Place 1]
Defeat all the enemies in here. Talk Clown, then exit the area by jumping to the spiral.
[Town Square - Town Hall]
Go to the gate and defeat all the enemies that should appear. Their numbers here are actually randomized, but it's not that relevant.
After defeating all the enemies, talk with Clown.
Chapter 3 - The Hanging Tree
[Graveyard - Tomb of Tears]
Go past all the enemies and reach the big tree by following the path. Talk to the Hanging Tree, then go back to the graveyard entrance.
While getting there you'll start a fight with Lock's Skeletons. A good way to dispatch them is with a Soul Cycle, replenishing it when almost red with Blue Souls.
After defeating them, interact with Zero's Dog house you should see near the graveyard entrance.
Now you need to find all five Hangmen scattered around the graveyard. You can use the following map to see where they're located. Though you need to follow where Zero goes to get to the other ones.
In this part of the graveyard where you are, you'll find only one of them. After finding it, go to the entrance to the next part of the graveyard, which is where you started the Lock fight.
[Graveyard - Old Graveyard]
Here you'll find three of them. After getting to the last one, go back to Tomb of Tears.
[Graveyard - Tomb of Tears]
The last one is on top of the tree. When you are in front of the tree, go to the right to find a spiral. Jumping between the spirals, you should get to a branch where there are two spirals to jump to. The left one takes you to some souls, the right one will take you to the Hangman on top.
After saving the last one, get down from the tree and talk to the Hanging Tree.
A little funny thing to try: when you're at the top of tree to save the last Hangman, instead of dropping to the left, try dropping diagonally, down-left, in the direction away from the spiral. Dropping in this direction should make you fall into the Golden Pumpkin that's down there.
Chapter 4 - The Grave Danger
[Graveyard - Tomb of Tears]
Here's another map to give an idea of where they are.
You can close all the tombs found in the Tomb of Tears, and then make a quick stop to the Witches' Shop to get the Soul Robber upgrade. You can make it through this chapter and the next without the Lvl 2 Soul Robber, but it does make it easier to lift up the tombs and the extra attack for the combo is a very nice addition for the next boss.
After closing all the tombs here, move to the Old Graveyard.
[Graveyard - Old Graveyard]
When you reach this area, after closing the first tombstone after the bridge, skip the next one and instead close first the tombstone next to the building full of spiderwebs. Then go back and close the tombstone on the hill. This makes enemies not spawn, saving some time.
After closing all the tombs here, get back to the Tomb of Tears.
[Graveyard - Tomb of Tears]
Go to the Hanging Tree and talk to him.
Chapter 5 - The Crypt Creeper
[Graveyard - Tomb of Tears]
We need to go into the building full of spiderwebs in the Old Graveyard. So let's move there.
[Graveyard - Old Graveyard]
While going there, you'll be stopped by Lock and his skeletons.
[Boss Fight - Lock]
Faster way to deal with him is to repeatedly Taunt him and Soul Spin in his face for heavy damage while he's stuck. If it fails, catch him while he's jumping to make him fall and open for some attacks.
After defeating him, get inside the building.
[Graveyard - Corridor of Coffins]
Progress through this area and enter the Burial Chamber.
[Graveyard - Burial Chamber]
[Boss Fight - Mega Spider]
Dodge its attacks and hit its weakspot. It's easier by standing on its sides to bait its attacks. You can also wait it out to do either its jump attack or charge attack. These
Charge your combo, and when the spiderlings appear, make a powered up combo and immediately follow it up with a Soul Spin to deal the most damage. Blue Souls can also be used but are not ideal.
After the fight you'll get the Valentine's Day Door and the Laboratory Key from Sally, granting you access to the Doctor's Lab.
You'll also get the Pumpkin King Costume!
Chapter 6 - The Doctor's Hunch
[Graveyard - Tomb of Tears]
Go straight to Town Square.
[Town Square - Fountain Area]
Go to the left to get to the gate to the Laboratory. Use the Laboratory Key to open it and enter.
[Doctor's Lab - The Acid Works]
Go sout, then east. Defeat all the enemies and than jump onto a spiral you should see on top of the tube. Break the wooden planks with the Pumpkin King Costume and activate the switch behind it. Follow the tube to the left to get back to where you started. You'll also find some Souls on the way.
Go past the gate and talk to Igor. Exit the area to get to the Witches' Shop.
[Town Square - Fountain Area]
Right outside of the shop you'll start a fight against Shock's ghosts. You can get rid of them faster with a Soul Cycle. You can replenish Blue Souls to the shop anyway.
After the fight, enter the Witches' Shop.
[Town Square - Witches' Shop]
Talk to the Witch to the right. Then get out of the shop.
Needless to say to buy anything you need while you're here.
[Town Square - Fountain Area]
Go near the fountain and talk to Corpse Kid. He'll give you the Bone Biscuits if you answer at least 7 out of 10 questions correctly. The questions for the Bone Biscuits will always be the same. Refer to these answers for the questions.

Once you get the Bone Biscuits, go back to the Doctor's Lab.
[Doctor's Lab - The Acid Works]
Just speak with Igor to give him the Bone Biscuits.
Chapter 7 - The Lightning Round
[Doctor's Lab - The Acid Works]
Right at the start, go forward a bit and destroy the wooden planks to your right with the Pumpkin King Costume and enter.
[Doctor's Lab - Power Plant]
Destroy the traps for later. Then go through the electric gates and destroy the debris to make way to the generator.
Immediately after you destroy the generator, go south-west to exit the area. Go south, then west and take the elevator that takes you back to the entrance of the area.
[Doctor's Lab - The Acid Works]
Now the area will be crawling with Trick and Treats and traps. Get to the lab by going north and avoid all the traps and enemies in the area. Soul Spin the heads that come out of the Guillotine on top of the stairs to send them back at them rather than just attacking it. Stay a bit far from the Mechanical Teets and hit them to disable them.
When you've reached the door, enter it quickly.
[Doctor's Lab - Runaway Ramp]
Go through the ramp and hide from then boulders as you go. It is possible to dodge the boulders with the dodge extension trick, but it requires a close timing to get it right, so not really suggested.
After reaching Lock on top of the ramp, get into the elevator to get to the Nightmare Lab.
Chapter 8 - Changing Brains
[Doctor's Lab - Nightmare Lab]
[Boss Fight - Dr. Finklestein]
Of course, we want to be fast here. At the start, throw the pieces of brain in front of him so that they drop on the ground right in front or near him. Get behind him, destroy the turret to the left, and open his head. Then go immediately for the brain piece and throw it at him in front.
The next part requires you to be fast enough to pull it off. Destroy the blade to the right and behind him with a Fire Bombs to give yourself more maneuverability. Get behind him, but stand a bit to the left to not be hit by the blade that'll come your way. After opening his head, go for the throw before the turrets appear.
This may take you a fair amount of tries to get it right. If it's too complicated, try to get to Dance Mode as fast as possible by destroying his inventions. This will make it easier to open his head at the cost of some time.
After the fight you'll get the St. Patrick's Day Door.
You'll also get the Santa Jack Costume!
Chapter 9 - Pumpkin Patch Possession
[Doctor's Lab - Nightmare Lab]
Exit the lab through the elevator.
[Doctor's Lab - Runaway Ramp]
To exit this area quickly, go to the left and jump on the spiral. Then jump off to the ramp to the right to be at the entrance.
[Doctor's Lab - The Acid Works]
Exit this area to Town Square.
[Town Square - Fountain Area]
To the left of the gate that takes you to the Graveyard, there's a passage that'll take you to the Pumpkin Patch.
[Pumpkin Patch - Behemoth's Briars]
Go through the Pumpkin Patch avoiding the hidden enemies as best as you can.
You'll need to fight all the enemies or you won't be able to use the spiral to reach the end of the area.
When Oogie starts to talk, you can stay there for a bit until he stops talking to not make some enemies appear further there.
Reach the end of the area to get to Barrel's Maze.
Chapter 10 - Barrel's Maze
[Pumpkin Patch - Barrel's Maze]
Hit the switch to the left, then go straight.
Hit the switch that is far away with a pumpkin then go through the trolls and the guillottine.
Continuing after the guillotine, jump into the spiral that you should see on your way and hit the switch on the other side. Jump back, go south, a bit north and all the way east until you cross the bridge.
Chapter 11 - Peril in the Pumpkin Head
[Pumpkin Patch - Barrel's Maze]
Jump on top of the big pumpkin through the spirals and enter the hole you'll find up there.
[Pumpkin Patch - Big Pumpkin Head]
On the first floor, defeat the skeletons as usual.
On the second floor, Soul Cycle the Halloween Ghosts. Soul Slam if there are a few ghosts remaining.
On the Third floor, there'll be enemies hidden. To the right there are skeletons, and to the left there are ghosts. Either reveal them with presents or hit them from a safe distance with Soul Robber and take them out fast.
[Boss Fight - Barrel]
Against Barrel, it's the same tactic as with Lock. Catch him in the air to damage him more or stunlock him with Taunts and Soul Spins.
After the fight you'll earn the Thanksgiving Door and the Residential Area Key.
Chapter 12 - Runaway Clown
[Pumpkin Patch - Big Pumpkin Head]
If you want, perform a triple dodge to jump on the stump to get the Golden Pumpkin.
Go all the way back to Town Square.
[Town Square - Fountain Area]
This is also a good time to stop by the Witches' Shop to buy some upgrades.
Go to the left of the Town Hall and open the gate with the Residential Area Key.
[Residential Area - Hemlock Homestead]
Stop Clown by surprising him with a Santa Jack's present. Then talk to the Witch.
You'll then have to go to the Doctor in his lab to ask him for a tool so lets get there.
[Doctor's Lab - Nightmare Lab]
Talk to** Dr. Finklestein**, then interact with the tool box you should find to the left to get the Bone Driver.
Go back to the Clown.
[Residential Area - Hemlock Homestead]
Startle him again and use the Bone Driver on him.
Chapter 13 - The Vampire Brothers
[Residential Area - Hemlock Homestead]
Get to the Vampire Castle.
[Residential Area - Vampire Castle]
The Vampire Bats won't appear until you've read the letter they left behind, so do that before looking for them.
Here's a map to give an idea of their location
One is right outside their house, where you open the gate with Clown.
The second and the third one are close by each other in the Towers of Torment. Past the gate to the left of the Vampire Castle, go through the path and take the left. Proceed and then take the stairs and jump onto the spiral. Here you'll find one of the Vampire Bats in a very tricky area that has you jumping on different spirals to move and with a giant fishbone that'll appear at the center.
The third one is found on the roof, by taking a spiral located to the left of the area where you found the earlier bat.
The fourth one is found in the Hidden Place 10. When you reach the Sewer Slums, get to where the wooden planks are located. Destroy them then go upstairs. Jump onto the spiral and defeat the King Skeletons that wil appear one after the other. Take the spiral to the north to be transported right in front of the entrance of the Hidden Place.
The vampires can be attracted with your presents to make it more easier to catch them. You still need to at least approach them a little to be attracted by the present and to not scare them by running at them.
After getting all the Vampire Bats, return to the Vampire Castle
[Residential Area - Vampire Castle]
Put the Vampire Bats in each of the coffins. You'll earn a Mayor's House Key Piece from each of the Vampire Brother you've saved.
Chapter 14 - The Mayor's Madhouse
[Residential Area - Vampire Castle]
Let's move to the Towers of Torment
[Residential Area - Towers of Torment]
You should see the path to the Mayor's House. Instead of taking the stairs to get to one of the bats, proceed further ahead. Move right and go to the path you should see in front. This path is full of hidden enemies that can't be avoided easily. Defeat them with the help of Santa Jack then go through the gate.
[Residential Area - Mayor's Yard]
Go to the center of the area and insert the Mayor's House Key Pieces in their corresponding place. You can ignore the enemies for the whole time here.
The the door is unlocked, go through it.
[Residential Area - Mayor's House]
Take the ramp south and proceed through the house to save the Mayor. After saving him, you'll have to proceed further to the Mayor's Roof.
You can evade all the enemies, except for one particular area in which you have to defeat them to take the spiral to proceed further. Do this, then go through the last door further ahead.
The Golden Pumpkin may be a waste of time to go for so don't bother.
Chapter 15 - Rooftop Rumble
[Residential Area - Mayor's Roof]
Throw the pumpkins and the bear traps at the bathtub to destroy it and forcing them out of it.
Shock is the worst of the three and can make you waste some time, so always be attacking her while dodging the attacks of the other two. Go for a Fire Bomb if you see at least two of them bundling together for more damage.
To defeat them faster, you have to destroy their bathtub right at the edge of the arena to force them to come out more bundled up together. When they're off, constantly hit them with Fire Bombs. Wait for them to try to get up before another Fire Bomb. If you do it like this, you won't even need to dance.
Chapter 16 - The Grisly Gauntlet
[Oogie Corridor - Magma Maze]
Jump onto the spiral next to you. Then jump onto the next one continuing to the right.
Jump the northern spiral. Wait for the platform to arrive and then walk on it.
After arriving at its destination, walk to the right. Wait for the platform ahead to stop under the skeleton then latch on the spiral to drop onto the platform.
Walk south to a set of spiral you have to jump to. Walk past the first see-saw than jump onto the spiral. Wait for the moving platform to arrive then walk onto it. There will be turrets that'll shoot skulls at you. Wait for it to shoot, then move.
Wait for the spinning blades to stop then jump onto the spirals. When you've reached the other side, avoid the flaming statues and proceed to through the door.
[Oogie Corridor - Caged Kings]
Proceed south to the cage shaped like a christmas tree and interact with it. A Mega Spider will appear.
[Boss Fight - Mega Spider]
The fight is the same as the Mega Spider in Chapter 5. Defeat it just like in that fight.
After the fight, an elevator will come down that can take you to the Fountain Area in Town Square. You can use this opportunity to go to the Witches' Shop if you need.
Interact with the christmas tree cage again to go through it.
[Oogie Corridor - Passage of Pain]
Chapter 17 - Casino Clash
[Oogie Corridor - Twist of Fate]
[Boss Fight - Oogie Boogie]
There's nothing much to do to speed this fight up.
Avoid the blades at the center by destroying the cards to create a safe space.
If you want to, you can go for the gunners here for a bit of damage. Time a Fire Bomb after he sings "You're joking" the third time to destroy them right at the moment when they become active. Though you can also just ignore them and move away from them.
When the exploding dices appear, always make sure to throw them in his mouth and then follow it up with Soul Robber combos powered up with Blue Souls. If you don't stun him, you'll waste a big amount of time.
Also, make sure to collect notes for more damage with Dance Mode.
After the fight you'll get the Easter Door.
Chapter 18 - Spiral Hill
[Town Square - Fountain Area]
This is a good opportunity to check the Witches Shop' for upgrades and stocking up on Blue Souls and Red Souls.
Go inside the Town Hall and talk to the Mayor
[Town Square - Town Hall]
After talking with the Mayor, go outside.
[Town Square - Fountain Area]
Speak with the Hanging Tree. Now move to the Graveyard.
[Graveyard - Tomb of Tears]
Interact with Zero's Dog House to wake him up. He'll take you to a path behind the big tree. Going through this path, interact with a gravestone with Hen Bane engraved on it to find the Spiral Hill Key.
Next up, we go to the Old Graveyard.
[Graveyard - Old Graveyard]
After passing through the statues that spit fire, go to the path to the right and open the door with the Spiral Hill Key.
[Spiral Hill - Horror Hill]
Go through the path right ahead. Continue until you find the statues with slots shaped like the holidays doors. Insert the correct door to their corresponding slot.
Chapter 19 - The Hinterlands - Part 1
[Hinterlands - Wandering Trail]
Check the map below to understand what path to take to whichever destination.
Best pathing to take is the following: Independence Day Door > St. Patrick's Day Door > Halloween Oogie Door > Valentine's Day Oogie Door > Thanksgiving Oogie Door > Easter Door.
We first need to return the St. Patrick's Day Door and the Independence Day Door back to their places.
Doing this will open up the places where the other Oogie Doors are. Interact with these doors to start a trial. Completing it will les ut take the Oogie Door.
Easter Oogie Door: you can take out the Ogres and the King Skeletons easily with Fire Bombs.
Thanksgiving Oogie Door: initiate a Soul Cycle and keep it until all your Blue Souls are used up. Defeat any remaining enemies there.
Valentine's Day Oogie Door: use Fire Bombs to take out the King Skeletons.
Halloween Oogie Door: Use Scared Stiff to the presents to the hidden enemies to the right to lock the King Ghosts in place and defeat them easier. Then use Re-possession to the hidden enemies to the left to turn them back to normal and defeat them.
When you've got all of the doors, go back to Spiral Hill.
[Spiral Hill - Horror Hill]
Go to the statue and substitute the actual Holidays Doors with the Oogie Doors.
Chapter 20 - Fire and Ice Frenzy
[Spiral Hill - Horror Hill]
[Boss Fight - Fire King Skeleton and Ice King Skeletons]
Fire Bomb the Ice King Skeleton to take it out quickly.
Hit the Fire King Skeleton from behind with the Soul Robber powered up with Blue Souls.
Chapter 19 - The Hinterlands - Part 2
[Spiral Hill - Horror Hill]
Go back to the Hinterlands.
[Hinterlands - Wandering Trail]
Follow the map again and put the doors back to their places. Best pathing to take this time is: Halloween Oogie Door > Valentine's Day Oogie Door > Thanksgiving Oogie Door > Easter Door.
When all of the doors have been put back to their places, a path in the area where you can get to the Easter Door and the Thanksgiving Door will open up. Go through this path, then take the path further south to enter a new area.
[Hinterlands - Seven Holidays]
Replace the final door, the Christmas Door.
Chapter 22 - Christmas Town
[Christmas Town - Xmas Tree Plaza]
First of all, to the right you should see a Snow Man portal that'll take you back to the Town Hall. Use this opportunity to get to the Witches' Shop and restock or buy upgrades if needed.
Go to the christmas tree and talk to the elf to the right. You have to talk to him to start the search for the decorations.] There are 5 decorations that you'll need to find here.
The Red Ornament can be found in any tree of the area. Hit them and you either find the decoration or a bomb that damages you. Because it is found at random, you do much better occasionally hitting the tree while going for the other decorations for a better use of your time.
The Blue Ornament is in Hidden Place 17, the Green Elf House, to the north of town. You need to light up the 3 lanters right in front of the house at the same time with a Fire Bomb to gain access. Defeating all enemies there will earn you this decoration.
The Christmas Stocking is found by destroying the carousel to the north. Normally, you'd need to deflect the projectiles back to the cats and penguins in the carousel to destroy them. On Easy Mode, you can just use Fire Breath to destroy them faster and without complication. After destroying the carousel, you'll find the decoration.
The Candle is in Hidden Place 18, the Red Elf House. To get here, you need to get on top of the house near the southern train tunnel, reachable with a spiral behind the house. Wait for the train to arrive, then jump on the present that is at the back. Wait for a bit until you see a spiral. Jump onto the spiral to enter the Hidden Place. Defeat all enemies here and you'll find the decoration.
The last one, the Star, is found on top of an house, to the right of the Christmas Tree. You need to get on top of the train that appears to the northern train tunnel to reach it, but this one won't go near the star until you hit the switch near the tunnel to change its direction. Get in front of the switch, and when you see the train in the background, grab the switch and run on top of the tunnel. Drop on top of the present in the back of the train and wait. Jump immediately into the spiral that you should see after a while, and it'll take you to the decoration.
After getting all of them, go back to the elf and just talk to him.
Chapter 23 - Saving Sandy
[Christmas Town - Xmas Tree Plaza]
Move to the gate that has opened to the northern part of the area, near the carousel.
[Christmas Town - Xmas Junction]
[Boss Fight - Train]
Throw Re-possession presents at the hidden enemies to give you some space for the train. Since we're on Easy Mode, you can take it down faster with Fire Breath, rather than using Soul Robber. Remember to stay a bit further away from it to not get hit and to hit the right lever to derail it.
Chapter 24 - Taking Out the Trash
[A Filthy Finale - Holiday Trash Hill]
If you need to, you can just go through the entrance to the north to get to the Town Hall. From there you can just get to the exit south so that you can get to the Witches' Shop to restock or buy upgrades.
When you're ready, move to the hill to the left to start the boss fight against Mega Oogie.
[Boss Fight - Mega Oogie, part 1]
It's faster to make him fall by hitting his feet and wack his head, on Easy Mode. Use a Blue Soul and hit his head with Soul Spins for massive damage until he's defeated. Don't worry about your health for the next phase; it's going to be fully replenished.
[Boss Fight - Mega Oogie, part 2]
This Dance Mode will take health away from you if you miss inputs. Be aware of that if you have low amount of health. As long as you go without missing until the last part of the song, you should be fine.
