The Nekomura no Hitobito: Pug Daikan no Akugyou Zanmai - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki

1) Introduction

The Nekomura no Hitobito: Pug Daikan no Akugyou Zanmai is the 116th game in the Simple 2000 series. As a Japan-only budget title, information online is minimal - the best thing that's been found is a Japanese page archived by the Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20231002203519/http://gamepukka.com/g054_nekomura.html.
As this may not be a permanent source, I've reproduced its contents here, modified with notes of my own.

This guide was pieced together by rozhestvensky - feel free to PM with any questions.

2) Menus and Translations

The gameplay is not super deep, so you don't need to understand Japanese to make your way through it. Here are some basic menu translations.

When you start the game, the title screen offers you some standard options:
Title Screen

If you select "Settings", you'll be able to adjust a few things:
Settings

Choosing the "New Game" option will prompt you to select a difficulty level. I guess the "and" in the middle implies a normal/average/regular difficulty - maybe that's too literal a translation on my part.
Difficulty

Note

All but one achievement can be completed on the easiest difficulty. The hardest difficulty is not that much harder than the others, so I would suggest playing on Hard from the get-go rather than doing two separate playthroughs.

When you start the game, you'll be inside your character's home, the "Cat House". This is the game's main menu - you'll do everything here except select a level to play.
Cat House

The Formation menu lets you set the types and amounts of cats you'll bring into a level:
Formation

Press up and down to select one of the three formations. Right and left will increase and decrease the number of cats in that formation, respectively. L1 and R1 will cycle through the different types of cats (all cats in a formation must be the same type). The box in the upper right shows how many cats are left to be assigned, as well as how many of your cats have died.

You can have up to 30 cats in total, and you can always revive them for free by examining the golden cat statues found throughout each level. Cat types are described in the Cat-alog Completion section below.

The Synthesis menu lets you combine raw materials into food or furniture:
Synthesis

Food can be carried into levels and consumed with R1, but otherwise these are only useful for filling up the Cat-alogs. Pressing Triangle will open up a "cheat sheet", showing you the exact combinations required to create each item. It starts out completely empty, but if you collect all of the scrolls in each level, the whole thing will be filled out for you:
Empty Cheat SheetFilled Cheat Sheet
Once you have a recipe on the cheat sheet, just press Circle to auto-add its ingredients, then Start to synthesize the item.

The Cat-alog menu shows the five different lists you'll need to fill out for achievements:
Cat-alogs

From left to right, these are the Enemy Cat-alog (green), Materials Cat-alog (red), Food Cat-alog (purple), Furniture Cat-alog (orange), and Friends Cat-alog (yellow). More info on these in the Cat-alog Completion section below.

The Save and Load screens are self-explanatory, but also basically identical. Be careful not to accidentally load your file when you mean to save instead!

If you Leave House (or press the Cross button), you'll exit to the Destinations page (world map). At the start, you'll only have access to the Magistrate's house. Visiting him will unlock new levels and assign you new objectives. Once you have all levels unlocked, it'll look like this:
Destinations

3) Basic Gameplay Notes

The closest comparison for this game is Pikmin, though there are no time limits and resource management is never that daunting. As you explore the levels, you'll rescue more cats, which enables you to carry objects that unlock new cat types, which in turn let you access new areas which contain more cats to save, etc etc. To accomplish any of this, have your cats pick up and carry objects to one of the level's exits.

While exploring the game's levels, these are the controls:

  • Left analog stick: Move - your character will move about, and cats in formation will follow
  • Right analog stick: Change camera - unfortunately, it's fairly slow and can get stuck behind level geometry
  • Circle button: Interact with objects - tell your cats to attack an enemy, pick up an object, etc
  • Cross button: Cancel - cats will stop attacking, put their objects down, etc
  • Square button: Jump - both you and your cats in formation
  • Triangle button: Eat - if you're close to an edible object, all cats will recover health
  • R1 button: Eat crafted food - if you created something via Synthesis, you can eat it to recover health for all cats
  • L1 button: Commands - change which cat formations follow you, and in what pattern
  • R3 button: Reset camera - snaps the camera view back to where you're facing
  • Select button: Map - toggles between full map, zoomed map, and no map
  • Start button: Exit - gives you the option to quit the level (you will not get to keep any objects your cats are carrying)

Map screen
Here's what you'll see with the full map showing.

  • The upper left shows (alive cats) / (total cats).
  • The icons in the upper right show your current formation commands.
  • The bar on the right side is the life bar - its maximum size changes based on how many cats are alive, and it will be depleted as you and your cats take damage. Note that your player's life can be depleted regardless of how full the life bar is, so keep out of danger and let your cats take the hits for you.
  • The icons in the lower right show which abilities your character currently has. Whatever cat types you bring into a level will imbue their abilities onto you, so you could give your character all kinds of powers... but since your character can't attack, carry objects, or interact with most environmental features, this isn't super helpful. I mostly just used one cat type across all three formations.

R1 menu
This is what you'll see when you press R1 for the first time - you won't have anything to use yet.

L1 menu
When you press L1, you can adjust tactics, which has situational uses when solving puzzles or navigating certain areas. Press up and down to select which formation(s) should follow you: The first one, the second one, the third one, all three, or none. Use left and right to tell your cats how to follow you:

  • Scattered (blue) - your cats will stick near you in a tight area. You'll be in this most of the time - it's perfect for fighting enemies and grabbing objects efficiently.
  • Square (yellow) - your cats will form up symmetrically and remain facing that direction, moving relative to your position. I didn't find this useful, but it may be ideal for getting through certain trap areas.
  • Snake (red) - your cats will line up single file and follow your exact movements. Useful for a couple of narrow passages, but more importantly, if you jump, the cats will only jump once they reach the same location you jumped from (instead of jumping as soon as you hit Square). Absolutely necessary to navigate the Village of the Witching Hour.

4) General Walkthrough

You won't travel linearly through the five levels. Rather, you'll have to move between them, revisiting areas as you unlock new cats and abilities. Instead of a step-by-step walkthrough, I've provided maps for each level (modified from the Gamepukka resources retrieved from the Wayback Machine) with notes on how to get each important item. Since your in-game map will remove colored dots as you collect their corresponding items, you can quickly see what's left to do in each stage.

Each stage has a star icon indicating its story objective. Once you collect the item found there, you can return to the Magistrate and open up a new level.

Other icons include:

  • $${\color{blue}Dark Blue}$$ Captured Cats - Carry these cages to an exit to rescue the cat and have it join your team. The number next to the icon shows how many cats are needed to carry the cage.
  • $${\color{purple}Purple}$$ Secret Scrolls - These are golden jars containing scrolls which help fill out your synthesis recipe list. The number next to the icon shows how many cats are needed to carry the jar.
  • $${\color{red}Red}$$ Principles - These are the priciples/tips/code of conduct/etc materials which unlock new cat types, though they look more like piles of coins. The number next to the icon shows how many cats are needed to carry the pile.
  • $${\color{yellow}Yellow}$$ Golden Cat Statues - If one of your cats has died, press Circle next to one of these to revive it. Statues re-appear every time you re-visit a level, so you can never lose cats permanently.
  • $${\color{lightblue}Light Blue}$$ Exits - These can be exit portals inside the map, or exit passages at the borders. Either way, you need to finish the level through one of these in order to keep the objects your cats are carrying.
  • $${\color{lightgreen}Light Green}$$ Your Cats - Sometimes, your cats will get stuck behind obstacles. Look for light green dots to figure out where they went.
  • $${\color{brown}Brown}$$ Rice Crackers - These are the barriers which can only be knocked down by the Miner ability. The number next these lines shows how many cats are needed to destroy the cracker.
  • $${\color{orange}Orange}$$ Flame Walls - These are barriers which can only be passed if you have the Firefighter ability.
  • $${\color{green}Green}$$ Key Doors - These doors can only be opened if your cats are nearby while carrying that level's key. The key is also on the map as a green dot, along with the number of cats required to lift it. Once a key door is unlocked, it will remain so on future level playthroughs.
  • $${\color{pink}Pink}$$ High Barriers - If a wall can only be jumped over with the Acrobat ability, it's marked in pink. Other walls and ledges may be low enough for an Acrobat even if not marked, and these can serve as shortcuts once you've unlocked this ability later.
  • Areas filled in with blue are rivers/lakes/etc, which can only be traversed by cats with the Fisherman ability.

Peaceful Prairie

Peaceful Prairie Map

  • The Hikyaku Tips material is along the riverside near the star icon - this will unlock the Courier Cat. You only need two cats to carry it, but you'll need to use six cats to lift and move the sleeping First-Year Netaro out of the way.
Zoomies (2)
Unlock the Courier Cat
  • The Fisherman's Tips material is in the alcove at the upper-left of the central area. You'll have to pass through a rotating spike trap to reach it.
Water Willing (3)
Unlock the Fisherman Cat
  • With a party full of Fisherman Cats, you can reach the orange star icon. Leap into the boat and approach the peach to begin a minigame / boss battle. The peach will slide around the boat and potentially fall into the water, so you need to defeat the enemies quickly then run to the side of the boat opposite the peach to counterbalance it. This may take a couple of tries if you get unlucky with enemy placements.
Momotarou (5)
Collect the giant peach from Peaceful Prairie
  • Once successful, you'll automatically leave the level to meet with the Magistrate. Enter his house again afterwards and he will direct you to visit Twilight Mountain.
  • With Firefighter Cats, you can pass through the wall of flame and reach the Peaceful Key. Don't worry about invalidating the "Around the Fire and Flames" achievement - this key will always be right here every time you restart this level.
  • If you're having trouble with the gate in the upper-leftmost area, look for a small switch just a short drop to the left of the gate. Be sure to have at least two formations so you can leave someone to hold the switch down.
  • The Swordsman's Knowledge is on a small island with a conveyor belt impeding access. I think the designers meant for you to use Courier Cats to get past these, but you can get by with any cats if you just keep running against it.
Samurai Pizza Cats (5)
Unlock the Swordsman Cat
  • Once you have the Acrobat Cat, you can jump up and grab the Peaceful Key without needing to pass through the wall of flame.
Around the Fire and Flames (3)
Pick up the Peaceful key without using any fire-proof cats
  • You can also use Acrobat Cats to rescue the cat at the top-middle of the map. The other pink platform is in the far upper-right of the map, beyond the path that goes under the waterfall. This is a little janky - when the platform is raised, you can just barely get your character up there, but other Acrobat Cats can't quite reach. If you stand on the platform and keep jumping, however, you can get your cats to glitch through to join you on top.
  • With 26 Scarecrows, you can both pass through the flame wall and knock down the rice cracker beyond it. This will lead you to the final cat type.
Futaba Riho De~su (10)
Unlock Riho Futaba
  • Once you have 29 cats, you'll be able to grab the final one in the bottom-left area, which should unlock a couple of things for you:
Peaceful Procurement (10)
Collect all cats, scrolls, and masteries from Peaceful Prairie
A Clowder of Cats (25)
Rescue all the cats

Twilight Mountain

Twilight Mountain Map

  • Once you have 10 cats, you can carry the key at the bottom of the map over to the locked door to the right. Continue further to the right and drop down to collect the Miner's Code of Conduct.
Can't Lock This Cat Out (5)
Unlock the Miner Cat
  • When you have 12 cats, use the "scale" to activate the elevator platforms to get up to the next level of the mountain. Then you can cross the long bridge to the top-left area and collect the Firefighting Tips material.
Fireproof Fur (5)
Unlock the Firefighter Cat
  • Take a left after the now-unlocked key door to find more elevator platforms. Keep scaling the mountain until you come across a cannon, then use 10 cats to carry it up the winding mountain path. At the top, you'll find a Boss Demon in the clearing. Use the cannon to knock it into the pit at the side of the area - just position yourself so that the cats are aiming at the Boss Demon, then hit Triangle to make them fire a round. Once it's defeated, the gate will open to your next objective.
Shita-Kiri Suzume (5)
Collect the sparrow basket from Twilight Mountain
  • The Magistrate will unlock Fishy Castle next.
  • You'll need 25 cats to grab the last major object here. Use Acrobat Cats to reach its area in the lower-right, but before grabbing it, jump across the mushrooms along the back wall for an achievement.
Cat Mario (5)
In the area near the Scarecrow Mastery, reach the highest mushroom
  • Now you can collect the Scarecrow Etiquette and exit the level.
...These Are Still Cats, Right? (10)
Unlock the Scarecrow
Twilight Treasures (10)
Collect all cats, scrolls, and masteries from Twilight Mountain

Fishy Castle

Fishy Castle Map

  • The area beyond the 5-cat cracker is your introduction to weighted platform puzzles. Platforms of the same color act as a scale - the heavier one goes down and the lighter one goes up. You'll need to use your formations to raise up your character and enough cats to carry whatever is waiting at the top.
  • The area beyond the 15-cat cracker contains three Squid Mekas, a boss encounter. This is easier if you break the cracker on one playthrough, then revisit the level with Swordsman Cats to do battle. You'll find your objective behind the doors they were guarding.
Urashima Tarou (5)
Collect the Tamatebako from Fishy Castle
  • The Magistrate will then send you to Everfrost Village.
  • Bring Fisherman Cats to explore the upper-right area. Leave a couple to stand on the floor switch at "g", which opens the gate at "G". When you press button "b", it permanently activates the "ramp" shortcut nearby.
  • For the wild floating platform area in the center of this map, use the Snake formation to have your cats follow your path.
  • The "S" marks the location of a curvy floor switch. Get 12 cats to stand on it in order to open the door in the room across the way. Using either this shortcut or the ramp, you will be able to reach the Laborer's Knowledge material.
Kittens With Mittens (5)
Unlock the Laborer Cat
  • Keys and their doors work differently in this level. There are multiple keys, each needing 5 cats, but they can only be handled by Laborers. Key doors may need 2, 3, or 5 keys to be held nearby to open up - those requirements are noted like "(#)". Keys can be used to open multiple doors, but they'll disappear if dropped, so defeat any enemies in your path before grabbing the keys you'll need.
  • You'll need 25 cats to gather everything here. Once you've done so, you'll unlock this achievement:
Castle Collecting (10)
Collect all cats, scrolls, and masteries from Fishy Castle
  • There's one additional challenge here. Enter the level with at least 13 Firefighter Cats (or Scarecrows) and at least 5 Fisherman Cats. You can unlock the following achievement by exiting the level with a Goma (the big fire pits near the entrance) and a Moisture Rock (the rocks with water flowing out, found in the bottom-leftmost room).
Element Collector (5)
Without using Laborer cats, collect two different elemental items requiring special handling from the same visit to Fishy Castle

Everfrost Village

Everfrost Village Map

  • Start by bringing Miner Cats so you can make your way to the village area in the far upper-right. You'll find The Principles of an Acrobat, which will open up a ton of new areas across all levels.
Cats In High Places (5)
Unlock the Acrobat Cat
  • With Acrobat Cats, take the path south of the entrance (avoid the rolling Daruma balls). Hitting the button at "b" will permanently lower the bridge at "B".
  • Acrobat Cats will also let you reach the objective in the top-left corner. You'll need to fight two Demon Bosses this time, but it's easy to maintain enough space such that you can beat one before the other notices you. As before, pick up a cannon and press Triangle to shoot a Demon Boss until it falls into a pit. Then you can grab their treasure.
Tsuru no Ongaeshi (10)
Collect the crane cloth from Everfrost Village
  • The Magistrate will unlock the Village of the Witching Hour now.
  • Continue to explore the level for more cats and scrolls. As usual, bring Acrobat Cats so you can explore it fully. Fight as many enemies as possible for their edible drops, and snack on items lying around. If you eat 30 things, you'll unlock this:
Preparing for Hibernation (10)
Eat 30 items from Everfrost Village (not crafted foods!)
  • And, as usual, an achievement for finding everything important:
Everfrost Extrication (10)
Collect all cats, scrolls, and masteries from Everfrost Village

Village of the Witching Hour

Village of the Witching Hour Map

  • This level is a pain - you'll need to carefully jump across a bunch of tree roots to start, and your cats will frequently die even while in Snake mode. Then the Fireball Ghosts and fire traps will thin your numbers even further. If you haven't unlocked the special multi-ability characters yet, you might want to do that first.
  • The Acrobat ability makes the jumping parts easier, but having Miner and Swordsman abilities makes the later parts and boss battle much easier. Try using the Scarecrow if you can. You'll need at least Miner to make it to the objective.
  • As you move from points "a" to "f", you'll mostly want to be in Snake mode (especially when making jumps). Don't get too far ahead of your cats - when you reach each letter, run around in a circle until everyone catches up (even if that means taking a hit from an enemy). Going too fast or telling your cats to attack something can mess up their pathing, leading to massive deaths. If you lose a bunch of cats, it's quicker to jump into the void yourself and restart the stage, rather than visiting previous levels to find golden cat statues.
  • After the 20-cat cracker, use the rock at "f" to jump to the lower ledge. The switch at "S" lowers the nearby bridge, linking you to the bottom area.
  • After that, the path to the objective is straightforward. Beat all of the enemies at the bottom of the hill (past the key door) to get their food drops. If your health is full, bring the food with you and drop it just inside the gate at the hilltop. Approach the shrine, have your cats attack the Great Yokai, then retreat back to the food and eat it when your team takes damage. If you have found most of the cats and have the Swordsman ability, you should be fine here.
Ushi no Toki Mairi (10)
Collect the prison key from the Village of the Witching Hour
  • You will go immediately to the Magistrate's house again for the final battle (see below). There are still a couple of things to do here when you return (just load your postgame save).
  • The bottom-left area (across the bridge) is sectioned off with straw barriers. You'll need to bait a Fireball Ghost into burning these down for you.
  • There are exactly two Yellow Star pickups in this level, marked "Y" on the map. One is in the bottom-right area behind the sleeping Third-Year Netaro, and you'll need 23 cats to move him. The other is on the ledge above the Great Yokai's shrine - use the Acrobat ability to climb up some rocks sticking out of the cliff. Bringing both of these items to an exit unlocks this achievement:
Star Seeker (10)
Collect two yellow stars from the same visit to Village of the Witching Hour
  • The scroll is annoying to collect. You'll need to approach it from the bottom side and use the Acrobat ability to jump across the rocks that jut out from the cliff. At least 20 cats need to successfully follow you in Snake form. The problem is that there's a Demon Fox on the way, and it will knock your cats into the abyss. I eventually got around this by having all my cats wait at the bottom of the hill, then jump across myself and get the Demon Fox to walk off the edge. Then I continued towards the top of the map and used the tree roots to loop all the way back around. Finally, I took control of my cats again and had them Snake after me to reach the scroll. Just drop down and walk out the nearby exit at that point.
  • With all that done, you'll unlock:
Witchy Wonders (10)
Collect all cats, scrolls, and masteries from Village of the Witching Hour

The Final Battle

Turns out the Magistrate was the villain all along! You'll start battle with him immediately, using the same cats you had after the Great Yokai battle. This isn't a tough fight, though - just run over to the Magistrate and order your cats to attack him. Ignore any other demons he summons, and hope that your cats can catch him as he runs around the room. Once you deplete his health, the game is won. You'll watch the credits, then get a prompt to save your game (do so).

Reunited At Last (10)
Rescue the cat princess and complete the game!

If you played on the hardest difficulty, you'll get this, too:

End of Another Tail (25)
Complete the game on hard difficulty

You can replay the Magistrate fight (and see the credits roll again) by revisiting his house from your postgame save. You can get another achievement for beating him within 18 seconds, which was no problem on Easy mode with 30 cats. On Hard, it may be more difficult - if Swordsman Cats/Scarecrows can't get it done, try using Courier Cats/Futaba Rihos so that they can reach the Magistrate more quickly.

Pug Punisher (10)
Defeat the pug magistrate within 18 seconds

5) Cat-alog Completion

When your cats defeat an enemy, it will receive an entry in the Enemy Cat-alog. Its name will show above its picture/animation on the left; the right page will show how many times you've beaten this enemy, what Materials it can drop upon defeat, and some flavor text at the bottom. The "Levels" column tells you where you can find this enemy - you probably won't need to track many down to complete this Cat-alog, but you may need to grind out a few Material drops to synthesize things for other Cat-alogs.

The Food Cat-alog will fill out as you synthesize edible items. All of the combinations will be revealed as you collect the secret scrolls across the levels, so no guessing should be required. You will likely need to revisit levels to collect more materials for their elements, however. A list of all elements and their amounts required for synthesis is below the Cat-alog list.
