Set consists of 160 achievements worth 1110 points
Set released on DD MMMM YYYY
Super Mario Galaxy is quite linear. In all but one case are you able to retry a level and keep going. However, there is one single missable achievement right at the beginning of the game. Outside of this, there are no other missables.
This game has 5 real "states." There were many ways of designing this guide, so I went with Dome > Galaxy > Achievements. This guide is not really designed to be followed in order, since you can do a lot of the game in your own way.
Here are the five states:
- Mario, pre-Any% (the game until you beat Bowser in the Center of the Universe for the first time)
- Mario, pre-100% (the game until you get all 120 stars and beat Bowser again)
- Luigi, pre-Any% (the game until you beat Bowser as Luigi in the Center of the Universe)
- Luigi, pre-100% (the game until you get all 120 stars as Luigi and beat Bowser again)
- Everything else (Stars 241 and 242)
A lot of achievements require you getting 100% as each character. These will be noted as such under each achievement. Challenges can be done at any time. However, I usually recommend beating 100% first (excluding the missable, unless you want to come back) to get experience with the game as some challenges are quite difficult, even for experienced players.
Note that all the achievements for beating each galaxy only require you to beat every non-Purple coin mission. This is equivalent to seeing the "Silver" crown, instead of the "Gold" one that you get when you get that one as well. As a result, this guide will be completely disregarding these missions unless they have an achievement. You will see "this galaxy has 5 missions" even though there is a sixth, it's not relevant for any achievement (other than 120 stars, I suppose).
Finally, it's highly recommended to do most of the challenge achievements as Luigi. He runs faster, jumps higher and farther, and gives you a bit more edge in the timed achievements. Unless otherwise mentioned, you should use him. However, everything is still possible as Mario if you want a harder challenge.
These achievements happen in the prologue. Note that you can come back here later in the game, after you finish the Engine room. This is the only category with a missable achievement (one).

Olly Olly Oxen-Done
Catch all three rabbits in hide-and-seek on Gateway Galaxy's starting planet in less than 1 minute. MISSABLE. This is the only missable achievement in the set. And, it's at the very start! There are 3 bunnies, one in the pit (not the one that goes all the way through), one in the grass bushes a bit to the left after you first talk to the bunnies, and one in the pipe. The bunnies get tired quite quickly. When you start, go left and over the white rocks and fall in the pit. Beyond that is the pipe, and beyond the pipe is the grass with the bunnies. Feel free to spawn them all then capture them, whatever you want. Time stops whenever you capture the last bunny. If you take more than one minute, you can quit the game from the pause menu and re-enter, skipping all the cutscenes. - A Trigger Indicator shows up after you first talk to the bunnies |
Twisting the Night Away
Learn how to spin as Mario. Progression. Can't be missed. You will get this after you first talk to "mama". |
The Yellow Brick Road
Complete the flip switch puzzle in Gateway Galaxy without changing any yellow flip switches back to blue. Challenge: In the final pipe, where the grand star is hidden, there are a bunch of yellow switches. Walking over them will switch them to blue, and they will stay blue until you walk off and back on. There are 4 under the rotating platforms that you'll get walking around, and another 12 a square surrounding the Grand Star. There is a Goomba you can knock away with a star bit if you are worried it will be in your way, then kick it while it is spinning (or ignore it if it's far enough out of the way). Then, walk around and turn those panels blue! Don't worry about forgetting or messing this up, you can come back to this mission later in the game. - Turning any switches from blue to yellow |
Gateway to Observation
Complete the Grand Star Rescue and earn your first star. Progression, can't be missed. |
🔗 Back to Top of Achievement Category
The Comet Observatory has several states throughout the game. The major ones are every time you get a Grand Star; however, the Observatory does naturally evolve in some other aspects. Some achievements help track these!
| Title | Guidance & Insights |
|---|---|
Shiitake Starfarers
Meet the Toad Brigade and have them set up shop at the Cosmic Observatory. Progression: You will get this after beating Bee Mario Takes Flight in the Honeyhive Galaxy. |
Interstellar Fungi
Recover enough Power Stars for the Lumas to complete the Starshroom. Progression: You will get this as you progress through the game. |
Sweet Ride
Reach Sweet Sweet Galaxy without using a launch star. Challenge: This requires unlocking the Red Star, which you can do after unlocking the Garden (and thus, the Gateway Galaxy). Grab the Red Star and simply fly up and into the Galaxy that the launch star would typically take you to. |
He Was an Electrician in Another Life
Restore full power to the observatory as Mario. Progression, can't be missed. Happens when you get the Grand Star in the Bedroom. |
Full Throttle
Restore full power to the observatory as Luigi. Progression (towards beating the game as Luigi), can't be missed. Happens when you get the Grand Star in the Bedroom. |
Fungal Five
Collect all five 1-up mushrooms on the Comet Observatory while only one flying power up is active. Challenge: There are five 1-up mushrooms throughout the Comet Observatory. Collect them all while and only using one Red Star power-up. Note that not all 1-ups appear at first. But, by the time you get the Red Star (after the bedroom Grand Star), they should all be there. This is my recommended order:
As for the path. First, get the first 1-up in the box. Do a fly u-turn around the Starshroom and fly right into the 2nd 1-up under the Bedroom. Then keep flying and go up quickly because the Kitchen and 3rd 1-up is right there. Then, turn around and fly up to the 4th 1-up under the Gateway Island. Finally, head to the top of the observatory and grab the final 1-up. - Collecting a 1-up without using the red star - Collecting another red star - Running out of a red star - A Trigger Indicator will appear when you first collect the red star - A Measured Indicator will increment each 1-up collected |
A Novel Constellation
Unlock Rosalina's library. Progression, can't be missed. The library unlocks partway through the game. You'll get this when it unlocks, and it tells you when you do. |
Mother of the Stars
Complete storytime with Rosalina. Challenge? This is optional, but fun! As you progress through the game, you unlock chapters in Rosalina's Storybook (the game will tell you this). Simply go into the Library (it's on the way to the Kitchen, by the warp), and you will immediately be put into a cutscene on the first time. |
A Royal Gift
Receive extra lives from a letter. Simply talk to the mail toad to get some lives from Peach. He's by the Garage before you get the Fountain Grand Star, and right in front of Rosalina after. He is purple and has a "Mail" icon above him when nearby, and has a chime going along with it as well. |
Lumaroth
Use the purple luma to summon or move comets. You might have to do this if no comets show up and you need one. Depending on how you play, you might never even need it. This isn't missable as the Luma is always here, even after fully completing the game. |

- Loopdeloop Galaxy (unlocks after 5 stars) – Has 1 mission

Over Easy
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Good Egg Galaxy. Good Egg Galaxy has 5 missions:
Prehistoric Conservation of Angular Momentum
Defeat Dino Piranha in Good Egg Galaxy without using the spin more than four times. Challenge: The wording here is that you need to only spin when necessary. You must hit him 4 times by spinning his rocky tail. You cannot waste a spin. If you mess up, you need to die and re-spawn. The indicator will disappear once you spin for a 5th time. Note that there is a one-up on the planet before Dino Piranha, behind the platforms with the Octogoombas. Collect that to avoid a game over. You are given the achievement after the boss fight if the requirements are met, so don't worry about accidentally spinning after the fight. - If you spin for a fifth time - A Trigger Indicator shows up after the cutscene when you hit Dino Piranha |
A Jump of Cosmic Proportions
Retrieve the star in "A Snack of Cosmic Proportions" without assembling the pull star. Challenge: On the final planet in this mission, you will be on a star with 5 blue shards. You can simply long jump to middle from one of the 5 corners. To do this, run towards the star, then press "Z" then "A" quickly. I think holding A takes you farther, but at the very least, keep holding the control stick forward. You cannot die on this planet, so if you miss, just try again until you get it. - Collecting the pieces and spawning the pull stars will make the indicator appear and invalidate the achievement - A Trigger Indicator will show up once you land on the planet |
Kalimari Koins
Collect 15 coins during the battle with King Kaliente in Good Egg Galaxy. Challenge: You can use a star bit to hit the blue Lava Bubbles and get 2 coins each (one at a time). There are 7 on the ground, so you need to collect the rest from at least 4 of the 6 that spawn. Make sure you start the fight before collecting the coins in the yellow dots on the ground. Coins prior to starting the fight won't count. - Dying; however, you can restart when you respawn, you don't need to exit the level - A Trigger Indicator will show up when you start the fight - A Measured Indicator will indicate total coins collected |
Setting a Fossil Record
Complete "Dino Piranha Speed Run" in Good Egg Galaxy in less than 2 minutes. Challenge: You are normally given four minutes to do this, but you have to now beat it in two. This one can get a bit tight, so it may take some practice to do. - When the timer at the bottom of the screen reaches 2:00 - A Trigger Indicator will show up once you start the mission |
Sunny Side Up
Complete "Purple Coin Omelet" in less than 1 minute and 30 seconds. Challenge: This mission is not normally timed, so you just need to do this quickly. This mission doesn't require any fancy movement, just efficiently going from one place to the next. Note that several coins are in the secondary launch star you can fly into between planets. There is a leaderboard timer active to see how long you've taken so far, so just keep an eye on that to see how much time has elapsed. You need to collect the star to finish the mission. Note that this mission unlocks after you beat the game. Route: Get the coins on the first pear planet. Use the star to head to the next planet, then spin to use the launch star along the route. Don't go directly to the red rock planet. Collect the coins on the egg planet, then do the same as before. Use the launch star, then use the launch star again to get back to the red rock planet. Finally, get the coins on that planet, and use the launch star and then the launch star again to land back on the pear planet. Then, go forward and collect the star! - When you spend more than 1 minute and 30 seconds in the mission - A Trigger Indicator shows up when the mission starts |
Up, Up, and Away
Obtain the star in "Luigi on the Roof" without entering the orange pipe. Challenge: There are a few ways to do this. A triple jump is probably the easiest, but you can also likely backflip up as well. You can clearly see Luigi on top of the house before you go in. Typically, people also wall jump off the side. |
Honeypot
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Honeyhive Galaxy. Honeyhive Galaxy has 5 missions:
Breaking the Buried Boulders
Collect 54 star bits in the secret pipe chamber on the starting planet in Honeyhive Galaxy without using the rainbow star. Challenge: The pipe is on top of the hill by the swing. To the right of the swing, hop up and behind, wall jump up, and defeat the piranha plant to head in the pipe. Inside, there are a bunch of rocks with a red core. Spin this core to break it open, revealing some star bits. At the bottom is an invincibility/rainbow star, you must not use it to beat this challenge. |
Beeautiful Buzzkiller
Defeat Bugaboom in "Big Bad Bugaboom" without losing the Bee Mario transformation. Challenge: You lose the power-up if you take damage or touch water. Just avoid both. If you die, you can get back to the boss fight and try again, you do not have to leave the level. - Losing the bee suit - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the boss fight |
A Cosmic Leap of Faith
Complete "Honeyhive Cosmic Mario Race" without entering the slide area. Challenge: Typically, Cosmic Mario goes up behind the waterfall and down the slide. You must avoid this. Where the title comes in is that you can long jump behind the fountain where the big coin is in the first mission and land on the area below. See the attached video for an example of this. Note that, while in long jump form, you can move your control stick to have quite a lot of control over where he lands. Use this to your advantage. - Going above or on the slide - A Trigger Indicator will show up when you enter the mission |
Surf's Up
Complete "Surfing 101" in less than 1 minute. Challenge: You need to do this quickly, of course, but there are some tips. I'll leave linked a video of someone providing some tips and advice on mastering this. Note that it was on the Switch remaster, but the surfing advice still applies. |
Flip Flopper
Complete the flip panel puzzle in "Painting the Planet Yellow" without jumping. Challenge: This one might seem difficult, but isn't too bad. The only frustrating part is the purple guy spitting the red rings. You only have 2 coins in the entire mission, so you effectively have 5 health. Note that you can (and have to) jump AFTER the planet turns green (wait, I thought we were turning it yellow?) - Jumping - A Trigger Indicator will show up when you start the mission - A Measured Indicator will tick up as you change tiles to yellow |
Legged It Out
Defeat Megaleg and obtain the Grand Star in the Terrace as Mario. Progression, can't be missed. |
Forbidden Calf Ritual
Defeat Megaleg and obtain the Grand Star in the Terrace as Luigi You will get this beating the game as Luigi. |
Ain't Got No Time for Leg Day
Destroy Megaleg in less than 1 minute. Challenge: The quickest way to do this is to have a bullet bill break the first gate, then when the new ones come up, back flip over those and have it directly go into the glass. One minute is not a lot, but you can do it if you work efficiently. You can get squished by Megaleg's mega leg to die quickly. This also has a leaderboard, so you can use that timer to see how long you've spent. Once it passes 1 minute, it's too late. - More than 1 minute elapses - A Trigger Indicator shows up after the cutscenes |
🔗 Back to Top of Achievement Category
Welcome to the Fountain! So, you've defeated Megaleg. It's time to take on some more Galaxies before we fight Bowser himself for the first time.
The Fountain has 5 galaxies:
- Space Junk Galaxy (unlocks after 9 stars) – Has 5 missions
- Rolling Green Galaxy (unlocks after 11 stars) – Has 1 mission
- Battlerock Galaxy (unlocks after 12 stars) – Has 6 missions (1 requires rescuing Luigi)
- Hurry-Scurry Galaxy (unlocks after 18 stars) – Has 1 mission
- Bowser's Star Reactor (unlocks after 15 stars) – Has 1 mission, the Grand Star mission
Outside (see Hungry Luma):
- Sling Pod Galaxy
| Title | Guidance & Insights |

Killing It for Kesseler
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Space Junk Galaxy. Space Junk Galaxy has 5 missions:
Faith in the Unseen
Collect all 5 silver stars in the final area of "Pull Star Path" in less than 35 seconds. Challenge: In the final area of this mission, you must collect 5 silver stars. This likely requires enough background knowledge of where all the paths are, so feel free to practice it before attempting it. Dying restarts the challenge, you don't need to restart the level. - Taking more than 35 seconds - A Trigger Indicator will appear as soon as you land |
Air Pirate
Locate Kamella's treasure hold. Bonus: You will find this in mission 2, "Kamella's Airship Attack" of Space Junk Galaxy. As this is supposed to be a fun challenge, I will be hiding it under a spoiler, but this is a guide, so I will include it anyway. At least try, y'know? I told you what mission it was in at least. Spoiler, LocationOn the ship with the koopas you need to throw, don't fall down. Long jump and grab the pull star, and drop down. You will slide and see all of the star bits. You can also ground pound the grate below where you fly in. |
The Magic of Pitch Counts
Defeat Kamella in Space Junk Galaxy without throwing more than two shells. Challenge: You typically need to throw the shell three times. However, you can just hold a shell and run into her to make her take damage. Do this after the first hit. Note that you also take damage so don't have 1 health left. - Throwing a third shell - A Trigger Indicator will show up when you start the fight |
I Get by with a Little Help from My Friend
After releasing Tarantox from his cocoon, defeat him without attaching Mario or Luigi to more than seven sling pods. Challenge: Typically, this requires, at minimum, 8 slings from Mario/Luigi. So, who is the friend? Well, Toad can help out! If you interact with toad at all, he will simply fall down, so go left to avoid him. All you need to do is slam into Tarantox's butt, then hit the 3 red belly buttons. Have toad hit one of these and Mario/Luigi the final 2. Note that this means you cannot miss. Note that just getting inside a sling pod ticks the counter, not just flying with it. - Getting inside a sling pod more than 8 times - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the fight |
Pull Star Pace
Complete "Pull Star Path Speed Run" in less than 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Challenge: You normally have 4 minutes to do this. Do it quickly to get this achievement. - When the timer hits 1:40 - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Refuse to Slow Down in Space
Complete "Purple Coin Spacewalk" in less than 1 minute. Challenge: Another speedrun. You normally have 2 minutes, so you need to do it with 1 minute left. The timer still ticks down after you get all 100 coins, so make sure you leave time for that. - When the timer hits 1 minute - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Hip Hip Hooray It's Goomba-Stomping Day!
Earn a 1-up from stomping Goombas on the Yoshi Head planet in Space Junk Galaxy. Challenge: After you stomp on 8 Goombas, you start earning one ups. Gather a bunch nearby and start jumping. Use spins to help you out. This happens in the "Mysterious Appearance of Yoshi" mission. |
Fore!
Complete the course in "Rolling in the Clouds" in less than 40 seconds. Challenge: Dying restarts entirely so don't worry about need to exit and come back. Good ol' fashion speedrun. |
Bitsballer
Complete "Rolling in the Clouds" with 125 more star bits without dying. Challenge: Dying does not reset your star bits, so you have to leave and come back if you die (you could also get rid of all your star bits, die, and restart that way, but leaving and coming back is probably easier and quicker). My suggestion is to not die, of course, but specifically take your time. Unlike on the Manta Ray, you can point at the screen for your cursor to come up and collect star bits. Problem, if you are playing as intended (with a Wii Remote), you will rapidly go forward. You can likely follow the star bits from the coins and get a lot, but the rest might be tricky. - Dying with multiple star bits - A Trigger Indicator shows up if you spawn in (or fly in) with 0 star bits |
Battlerock and Roll
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Battlerock Galaxy. Battlerock Galaxy is our first special galaxy with 6 total missions:
Battlerock Bonzana
Collect 60 star bits on the moving platform in "Battlerock Barrage" or "Luigi under the Saucer." Challenge: There are a lot of star bits on the walls, and the big ? coin has a bunch as well. Several star bits will land on the platform as well. You need to collect nearly ever star bit you can. You have until the platform stops. - If the platform stops before you reach 60 - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you spin the gear to start the platform - A Measured Indicator will occasionally show your total |
Molecular De-Chomposition
Destroy all six chomps on the molecule planet during "Breaking into the Battlerock" or "Battlerock's Garbage Dump." Challenge: Use the invincibility star and run into all the chomps. Ignore the star bits if you need to. You should have enough time if your only focus is the chomps. - A Measured Indicator will update as you break the chomps |
The Juice Is Loose
Free the luma from the crystal in "Breaking into the Battlerock" on the first cannon shot. Challenge: Typically, the Luma is inside two tiers of glass. If you miss, you gotta get into the other cannon and try again. You need to time and line up properly to be right in the middle on the first time. - Using the cannon at all and missing - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you enter the room with the Luma |
Torqued
Defeat Topmaniac in less than 12 seconds. Challenge: Speedrun! Time starts after the cutscene. This works in either the main or Daredevil mission, if you want an extra challenge. There is a leaderboard timer as well that you can use to track your time. - Taking more than 12 seconds to beat Topmaniac - A Trigger Indicator shows up after the cutscene |
Sleeping Satellite
Obtain the star in "Shrinking Satellite" without jumping. Challenge: Die if needed. You need to do the entire mission, not just the last planet. - Jumping - A Trigger Indicator starts when you start the mission. |
Timed Reaction
Defeat Bowser and obtain the Grand Star in the Fountain as Mario. Progression: Can't be missed. |
Splish Splash
Defeat Bowser and obtain the Grand Star in the Fountain as Luigi. |
Turtle Toppling 101
Defeat Bowser in Bowser's Star Reactor without letting him recover from any of his burnt tail or spin out states. Challenge: If you don't swing at Bowser while his tail is on fire quick enough, he will put out his tail's flame and go back to chasing you. Similarly, he will exit his spin after a few cycles. Generally, there is no real rush here, but you might mess up your first time though. - Bowser's burnt tail burns out - Bowser's spinning stops - A Trigger Indicator shows up when Bowser first appears |
🔗 Back to Top of Achievement Category
Welcome to the Kitchen! Now, it's time to cook. This is the third dome, unlocked after beating Bowser in the Fountain.
The Kitchen has 5 galaxies:
- Beach Bowl Galaxy (unlocks after 16 stars) – Has 5 missions
- Bubble Breeze Galaxy (unlocks after 19 stars) – Has 1 mission
- Ghostly Galaxy (unlocks after 20 stars) – Has 5 missions
- Buoy Base Galaxy (unlocks after 30 stars and beating "Sunken Treasure" in Beach Bowl) – Has 2 missions
- Bowser Jr.'s Airship Armada (unlocks after 23 stars) – Has 1 mission, the Grand Star mission
Outside (see Hungry Luma):
- Drip Drop Galaxy
| Title | Guidance & Insights |

Formiddable Freestyle
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Beach Bowl Galaxy. Beach Bowl has 5 missions:
Arborist
Retrieve the star in "Sunken Treasure" without assembling the launch star. Challenge: Typically, you must collect 5 star pieces in the ocean to open the launch star and fly up to the top. You can skip this by back-flipping off the tree. See the video for an example of this. - Assembling the launch star - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Following the Tunes of the Beach
Obtain the note challenge 1-up mushroom during "Sunken Treasure" in Beach Bowl Galaxy. Challenge: Once you use the launch star (or don't, see the below achievement), to get to the top layer, you will see a big ? Coin, collect it to see notes appear. Collecting all of these spawns a 1-up, grab it to collect this achievement. |
Pool Shark
Complete "Passing the Swim Test" in less than 1 minute. Challenge: You must collect the golden shell and bring it to the teacher in less than one minute. Note that the shell does not spawn until you initially talk to the penguin; however, the penguins swimming around are still there. If you can spot them, swim to them quickly after the shell spawns. You can keep spinning to swim faster, there is no cooldown on spinning while swimming. Once you grab the shell, don't swim, as you will throw the shell. However, you do still swim quickly, so start going up and walk over to the penguin. Timer starts when you start the mission, there is a leaderboard you can use as well to track your time. - More than one minute elapses - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Leap of Faith
Collect the 1-up mushroom near the Cyclone Stone's rotating platforms by jumping to it from the high ground near the start. Challenge: In "The Secret Undersea Cavern" (or the "Fast Foe" mission, I suppose), walk forward and you will see a 1-up above some rectangle platforms that move back and forth. A precise long jump can just barely reach. Try to long jump as it's coming towards you, as it might be gone by the time you land. |
Bubblicious
Collect 40 star bits while launching to the second part of "Through the Poison Swamp." Challenge: There are a bunch of star bits as you fly between the two areas. Just collect a bunch in the air and you'll be good. Just get ready when you use the launch star! |
Scrambling on the Rocks
Complete the second part of "Through the Poison Swamp" without entering a bubble. Challenge: Speedrun trick! Except, don't worry, it's quite easy. A simple backflip onto the rocks and then a long jump over to the star is all you need! You will more than likely undershoot it than overshoot it. Be careful of the bombs as they can knock you into the poison. - Getting into any bubble - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start on the second planet |
Master of the Mansion
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Ghostly Galaxy. Ghostly Galaxy has 5 missions:
Unpalatable
Kill the chomp guarding the haunted mansion. Challenge: You can kill him with an invincibility star found in one of the rocks on the first planet. |
Boo's Booty
Collect all 48 coins in the haunted mansion's secret library. Challenge/Secret: While you are collecting the star pieces to progress in "Luigi and the Haunted Mansion," you will notice a cracked section on the roof. Ground pound this to enter the room to find a bunch of sling stars. You will also see a big ? Coin, collect it, then quickly use the launch stars to collect the coins. |
Ghost Buster
Rescue Luigi from a paranormal predicament. Progression (towards 100%), can't be missed. Just beat "Luigi and the Haunted Mansion" to earn this one. |
Speedy Specter
Complete "A Very Spooky Sprint" in less than 1 minute. Challenge: Note that this only considers the in-game time. Before you start the race, head through the race until the end where there are a bunch of floating mines. Use your star bits to destroy them, then head onto the goal planet and find the pipe to go back. Then, when doing the race, go to the sling star to skip a significant portion of the race. Now, the final part is easier, so you can quickly go through it, and beat the race. |
Diamond Hands
Defeat Bouldergeist without damaging his hands. Challenge: The first phase is free since there are no hands. As for the second, when they actually spawn in, the easiest way to do this is to be close to Bouldergeist when he launches the rocks. That way, you can swing the Bomb Boos right into him. I recommend constantly circling close to him. - Damaging the hands - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the boss fight |
As a Matter of Fact
Collect 80 star bits in the "Matter Splatter Mansion." Challenge: This is in the secret mission, which is accessible in main missions 2 and 3 by breaking the glowing rock near the ledge to the right. The star bits mostly come from the end ? Coin that starts the moving. There is a checkpoint at the final section, and thus dying there will invalidate it completely, requiring exiting the level and coming back. - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you land or spawn on the first planet after the launch star |
The Unseen Halls
Complete "Matter Splatter Mansion" in less than 1 minute. Challenge: Same mission, just do it quickly. There is a leaderboard, so you can use that to track your time. There is a checkpoint at the final section, and thus dying there will invalidate it completely, requiring exiting the level and coming back. - Take more than 1 minute - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you land on the first planet after the launch star |
If You Can't Stand the Heat
Defeat Bowser Jr. and obtain the Grand Star in the Kitchen as Mario. Progression, can't be missed. |
That Kid's Not Cleared for Takeoff
Defeat Bowser Jr. and obtain the Grand Star in the Kitchen as Luigi. Progression (towards 100% as Luigi), can't be missed. |
Bouncing With Goombas

Obtain the 1-up mushroom on the tiny trampoline planet in Bowser Jr's Airship Armada. Challenge/Bonus: In the first cannon, you are intended to go straight to the ship. However, off to the right, is a tiny planet with goombas. Focus on it and aim right at it. When you land, you will start bouncing. Defeat the goombas and then bounce over to the 1-up, grab it, then use the sling star to get back on track. |
Space Ace
Defeat Bowser Jr.'s airship without being damaged or throwing more than five shells. Challenge: You need to throw five shells regardless, so don't miss. If you go quickly, there will be less bullet bills in your way. Jump on, or spin near, the koopas and throw them at Bowser Jr's ship. He will rotate it towards you after 3 throws, making aiming a bit harder. - Taking damage - Throwing a 6th shell - A Trigger Indicator starts when the cutscene starts |

Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Freezeflame Galaxy. Freezeflame Galaxy has 5 missions:
Chill Out
Complete "The Frozen Peak of Baron Brrr" without transforming into Ice Mario more than two times. Challenge: You technically only really need it once. You really technically don't need it at all, but if we're keeping our sanity, you can get up to the top without needing an ice flower, then use one to use the sling star to get to the peak. Well timed jumps can avoid needing more than one. Below a speedrun is linked, you absolutely don't have to do the coin block long jump, just go up and on the Bomps like normal. The video does show how to avoid one of them to get up, and if you're quick, you can avoid needing one at the top. With this, you can afford that, if you need it. - Whenever you use a third ice flower - Dying after a checkpoint - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission - A Measured Indicator will show how many ice flowers you have left |
Backside Bandit
Obtain the hidden 1-up mushroom behind the elevator in "Freezeflame's Blistering Core." Bonus: Head back behind the wall in the second section. Collect the big ? Coin and wall-jump to collect the notes, then the 1-up will appear on top! |

Complete "Freezeflame's Blistering Core" without transforming into Fire Mario more than two times. Challenge: You can skip the first fire flower by just climbing up the tower. Then, just make sure you get all the fire things on the first try each time. - When you obtain your third fire flower - Dying after a checkpoint - A Trigger Indicator will show up when you start the mission |
Icy Hot Skating

There is a leaderboard with a timer that you can use to track your time. - Taking more than 30 seconds - A Trigger Indicator shows up right before you land |
Don't Sink My Sandcastle!
Assemble the launch star in "Sunbaked Sand Castle" without re-sinking the castle. Challenge: Initially you need to make the castle fall. You actually don't even need to raise it back up. Locations:
Blast Off
Complete "Sand Blast Speed Run" in less than 3 minutes. Challenge: You typically have 4 minutes and 30 seconds. The only real recommendation here is go towards the Green arrow on the tornado planet to skip some of the final planet. It's otherwise just "play optimally." - If you take more than 3 minutes to beat - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Honeycomb Hoarder
Collect 250 star bits in Honeyclimb Galaxy without dying. Challenge: There are a lot of star bits in this level. |
Blackhole Sun
Launch around the giant tree in Gold Leaf Galaxy. Bonus: You'll see a random ? Coin floating below the island. Jump down to this, quickly spin as a sling star will appear, and then enjoy the flyaround! The best place to fall down is right at the top of the slope on the left side. Hug the wall. Linked here is a view of it from above, see noclip.website. |
Arboreal Award
Obtain the 1-up high atop a tall tree in Gold Leaf Galaxy. Challenge: There is a 1-up on top of the tall, skinny tree to the left, above the platform with the piranha plants. Ideally, you get a Bee Mushroom up to the top of the planet, and fly over. Below is the ONLY video I could find about this. I will replace this with my own when I get it, and a more detailed video too. |
Busy Buzzing All Day Long
Complete "When It Rains, It Pours" without losing the Bee transformation. Challenge: Touching rain or taking damage loses the power-up, so just tread carefully. Note that going into a bubble also makes you lose the power-up. - Losing the Bee transformation - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Mind the Gap
Defeat Undergrunt Gunner in "When It Rains, It Pours" without being damaged or raising the platforms. Challenge: You can get bubbled and spin and all that so don't worry too much here. You just need to avoid the spikes. You can easily do this while also doing the above challenge, as you can fly right over the bubbles if you time it properly. - Taking damage - Activating the platform - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the boss fight |
Timberland Treasure Trot
Complete "Purple Coins in the Woods" in less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Challenge: You typically have 3 minutes and 30 seconds for this, so you need to do it with a minute to spare. Note you must also collect the star after you get the purple coins. - When the timer hits 1:00 - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Tide and True
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Sea Slide Galaxy. Sea Slide Galaxy has 5 missions:
Porpoise Pro

Playtime's Over
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Toy Time Galaxy. Toy Time Galaxy has five missions:
No Toy Left Behind
View the hidden toy train in Toy Time Galaxy. Bonus: There's a hidden train in the first mission on the Conveyor Belts Planet. Can you find it? Note that you also have to enter 1st person mode to actually look at the train, you can't just walk in there. Spoiler: LocationSkip the Spring Mushroom, backflip up and work your way to the right. Hop up the orange block, go to the yellow block, and sneak and head in the tiny gap under the slope. |
Avoiding Assimilation of Mechanical Means
Complete "Heavy Metal Mecha-Bowser" as Mario without collecting a Spring mushroom. Challenge: You don't need it at all! You can backflip-spin up most of the first area where you are introduced to it. The hardest planet might be the one where the star is inside the bottle. Luigi can get up here a lot easier, but Mario should be able to as well. Finally, some triple jumps and backflips will get you to the top to finish off the boss! Note for below, you don't need to do the silly wall-jumping stuff, you can just play the level like normal. |
Brotherly Love
Collect 30 star bits during the launch off the first train in "Mario Meets Mario" (or "Luigi Meets Mario") before landing. Challenge: There's 20 in the each heart by the red pencils. Just grab 30 of the 40. - Not reaching 30 star bits before you land - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you enter the launch star |
An Unshocking Turn of Events
Defeat Undergrunt Gunner in Toy Time Galaxy without taking damage or losing the Spring power. Challenge: Taking damage does lose the Spring power; however, you don't need it at all. I recommend it up until the boss, but you can simply backflip-wall jump-spin up to the top and ground pound him like normal. Just avoid getting hit. Also be wary of him charging up which will damage you. Below video is an example of the boss without needing the Spring. |
Leaping to New Heights
Complete "Bouncing Down Cake Lane" as Luigi without collecting a Spring mushroom. Challenge: This requires a surprisingly tight triple jump on the first planet. You can easily backflip and spin up to the top of the undergrunt gunner at the end. - Using a spring mushroom - Dying past the second planet - A Trigger Indicator when you start the mission as Luigi, or re-spawn as late as the start of the second planet |
Never Break the Chain
Complete the flip panel puzzle in Toy Time Galaxy without changing any yellow flip panels back to blue. Challenge: Just like in the prologue, don't step on any yellow panels. A lot are easy to avoid re-treading, just be careful if you go back around. - When you turn a panel back to blue - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you land on the planet, or when you re-spawn after you die - A Measured Indicator shows up when you flip a switch yellow |
The Master Maker
Complete "Luigi's Purple Coins" having collected all 150 purple coins. Challenge: It's recommended to use Luigi here as you get more control and distance, but it's possible with Mario as well. You need to collect every single coin and then make it back to the star. The hardest part are the floating 5 coins as you only get one shot. The provided example shows Mario. Note that this mission requires beating the game and the Good Egg Galaxy purple coin mission to appear. |
Luigi's Enlivened Leaping
Complete "Luigi's Purple Coins" in Toy Time Galaxy in less than 2 minutes. Challenge: You typically have 3 minutes, so make sure you get the final coins near the platform so you can make it back in time. - When the timer hits 1:00 - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Lung Capacity
Defeat Kingfin without taking a breath. Challenge: This means you cannot get an air bubble or refill your meter. Use the red shells as they are homing. You have 1 minute of breath then about 5 seconds between each damage. Note that, as Mario, you can spin for free, but as Luigi, you lose about 5 seconds of air breath each spin. - When you increase your air meter - A Trigger Indicator shows up when the cutscene starts |
Heart of the Observatory
Defeat King Kaliente and obtain the Grand Star in the Engine Room as Mario. Progression, can't be missed. |
Simmering Anger Issues
Defeat King Kaliente and obtain the Grand Star in the Engine Room as Luigi. You will get this beating the game as Luigi. |
Held the Hexagon
Defeat King Kaliente in Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor without depressing any platforms other than the starting one. Challenge: This one is tricky, you cannot leave the platform you start on. However, the platforms stop depressing once he is defeated, so don't worry about needing to get to the star. Constantly jump and spin to avoid your platform disappearing. I highly recommend grabbing that life shroom. You can, however, be above the platform, just make sure you either fall into the lava or make your way back. You can't step on any other platform at all. - Whenever any other platforms other than the starting one depresses - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the fight |

Challenge: On missions with the cannon accessible, to the right behind the tree leaves is a tiny Gateway Galaxy planet. You'll find a gear, spin it to have coins slowly show up. |
I Spin You Right Round
Complete "Topman Tribe Speed Run" in Dreadnought Galaxy in less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Challenge: You typically have 6 minutes, so you must do it twice as fast. Note that the time is based on your in-game timer ticking below 3:30, which means cutscenes don't count down the timer. - When the timer hits 2:30 - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
I'm Not Impressed by Your Performance
Reach the end of "Battlestation's Purple Coins" without collecting any purple coins. Challenge: This might actually be harder than the mission, since you need to avoid every purple coin. Remember that troll final coin at the end? Ignore the launch star and long jump to the right of it to get to a sling star, use that to bypass the final coin. You'll get a special line of dialogue. - Collecting any purple coin - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Lava Your Work
Obtain every non-Purple Comet star in Melty Molten Galaxy. Melty Molten Galaxy has 5 missions:
Forged in Fire
Collect all 30 star bits in the bottom of the volcano in Melty Molten Galaxy. Challenge: In the first mission, at the top of the volcano, fall instead of spinning in the launch star. Defeat Fiery Dino Piranha in Melty Molten Galaxy without taking damage. Challenge: Hardest part is dealing with his tail. Just carefully time your swings. - Taking any damage - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you land on the planet |
Spring High for Life
Collect both 1-ups from above the first right-hand pillar in the final area of "Watch Your Step" in Matter Splatter Galaxy. Challenge: When you get to the section with the spring mushroom, do NOT bounce into the launch star. Instead, go up and to the left and you'll see a pipe. Enter the pipe with the spring mushroom, jump up onto the pillar, and jump up to get these 1-ups. If you die trying to get the 1-ups, you will re-spawn on the platform by the 1-ups. Therefore, you must restart the level if you fail to get them. - When you lose the Spring mushroom - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you get the spring mushroom - A Measured Indicator will show the 1-ups you've collected |

Cross the rotating platform in "Rocky Road" without jumping or spinning. Challenge: This mission is in the Hungry Luma mission outside of the Terrace. The rotating platform this is referring to is the brown platform after you talk to the toads. You will be heavily tempted to spin and jump, don't do it. If you do, collect the 1-up and die, the checkpoint is right next to the toads. Carefully maneuver your way around the holes to get this one. You need to get right to the final platform. Wait for the achievement to pop before jumping up on the final platform. - Jumping and landing back on the platform - Spinning - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you are on the platform |

Sticking It to the Clock
Complete "A Very Sticky Situation" in less than 50 seconds. Challenge: This mission typically requires patience, so under 50 seconds is quite an ask, though you can still line yourself up if needed. I recommend doing the mission first and coming back. - When you take more than 50 seconds to beat the level - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission, or re-spawn on the starting platform |
Through Fangs and Silence
Collect the star in "Giant Eel Outbreak" in a single breath. Challenge: Like with Kingfin, you cannot refill your breath meter. You get about one minute, and spinning as Mario doesn't reduce the meter, but as Luigi does. - Refilling your air meter - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you first enter the water after starting the mission |
Bigmouth Strikes Again
Complete "Bigmouth's Gold Bait" without assembling the launch star. Challenge: Typically you need to collect the 5 star pieces at the bottom. You'll jump out of the water and up into the area with the gold shell. - Assembling the launch star - A Trigger Indicator shows up when you start the mission |
Hive-Minded

Complete "Choosing a Favorite Snack" as Bee Mario. Challenge: This is way easier to do as Boo Mario, so requiring the Bee is a fun challenge! The rest isn't too hard to avoid, you just need to be quick. Tip for the second planet, you can spin the plant into Bowser at any time, not just in his spike form. Note that these do not unlock until after you beat Bowser in the Center of the Universe for the first time. Every Galaxy with multiple missions has a Purple Coin mission, so I won't be listing them all. I will, however, list the ones with special requirements. Clicking the name will take you to the achievement in this guide to see more info. Note that for timed missions, the timer still ticks down after you get all 100 purple coins.

Everything else. You will likely get these as you play, but I'll leave tips just in case.

Super Mario Galaxy offers several leaderboards. Most notably for the races, but also several boss fights and timed speedy levels.
You will typically see a timer in your emulator regarding your speed time. It will not show up if there is already an in-game timer, but it will still submit.
For all of these, timing starts when you start fighting the boss. This might be the first cutscene, depending on the boss. Time stops when you defeat the boss.
You will see a stopwatch indicating your elapsed time inside your emulator.
Yea, hah, hah, hah, hello! These are the leaderboards for the cosmic races.
For these, time starts when the race starts and ends when you collect the star. It will be canceled if you die (or leave the level) or Cosmic Mario/Luigi beats you.
Speedy (and some Purple) Prankster Comets have a timer that ticks down that you need to complete the mission in time for.
The time starts when the timer in-game starts and ends when you collect the star. Exiting the level or dying will cancel the submission. Dying resets the level so you don't have to leave and come back.
There are a handful of missions with a timed race. This time appears in-game on the mission screen and your total missions.
The tracked time already shows up in-game, so whenever that starts and stops is what is tracked for the leaderboard.
These are all unique challenges with achievements tied to them. There is no in-game timer or countdown with these achievements, they are solely added as extra challenges.
They all have an emulator stopwatch to see how long you've progressed.
For all of these leaderboards, your submission is canceled if you die or leave the level.
These leaderboards are not time-based and are instead scored uniquely.

An indicator displayed by the RetroAchievements overlay, typically used to show when a challenge achievement is available for unlocking or when it is currently active. If this indicator disappears before the achievement unlocks, it often signals a failure, indicating that a retry is necessary.
