Welcome to Super Locomotive. It will likely take you a few attempts to understand the controls and mechanics, but I'm here to help with that.

Controls: Directional Input: Up/Down to change tracks (typically hold them until you've finished changing tracks) and Left/Right to move in those directions. You'll be moving Right pretty much at all times - so hold that button down unless you need to slow down for any reason - but there aren't many.

Button 1: Shoot missiles at a very small cost of Energy - this is important because if you run out of energy you will be incredibly vulnerable. Hold this longer to get more height, and they will fly backwards to hit targets in the sky.

Button 2: Invincibility at the cost of Energy.

Gameplay: Your goal is to get to the end of the level by any means possible. Shoot enemies to stop them shooting you. You gain points by shooting enemies, but not their bullets - but the bullets kill you so watch out for those.

You can move tracks to avoid planes or other trains chasing you - sometimes they follow, other times they do not. You will need to be watching both the minimap for upgrades, trains, planes, trucks and switches.

Oil and Cash help you (more energy and points respectively), and pretty much everything else is out to kill you. Items are in semi-fixed locations, but will generally be in the same location if you take the same route.

Switches (circles on the map), if flashing on your map are dangerous. If they are blue they are safe, and will trigger and kill trains behind you once you pass through.

To shoot trains, you pretty much just tap Button 1, to shoot planes you hold it until it is at the correct height. This timing will become second nature after awhile, allowing you to focus on the minimap more.

In later levels you will get bombarded with planes and should be pre-emptively trying to shoot them down before they approach and shoot a missile at you. Less bullets for more planes killed means more points and more safety.

The levels get progressively harder, and your energy returns after every map. As levels go on there will be times when using your invincibility is the only choice, but you should try to use it sparingly if possible, as the levels are quite long and it takes a lot of energy. If you die, you have limited lives, but will continue close to where you died.

You can gain extra lives through earning points.

Step 2: High Score | Total points: 25

The Little Engine That Could (5)
Achieve a score of 20,000
Sir Topham Hatt Would Be Proud (10)
Achieve a score of 50,000
Yellow Magic Orchestra's Biggest Fan (10)
Achieve a score of 100,000

Getting the high score of 100k is harder than beating the game, as you will probably be around 70-85k after 5 rounds. So you will need to continue playing in order to get those points. If you are very good at shooting down enemies and at the minigame, this will take less time.

Alternatively, you can cheese this by essentially finding a tunnel and driving in and out of it (as you gain points from forward movement): High Score Cheese - credit NEOMAR

Step 3: Bonus Stage | Total points: 5

You Are Perfected! (5)
In a bonus stage containing 15 or more airplanes, shoot down all of them

This achievement is a bit tricky to understand at first, as it looks like it's asking for you to shoot 15 planes. However, you need both 15 planes as a minimum, and all planes shot down. The amount of planes you get in the minigame is directly related to the amount of enemies you destroy during the main game. Try to kill exactly 15 to make this easier.

I found using turbo to attack was very useful, as the timing lined up with how the enemies appeared. If you do more than 15 you will tend to miss at least 1 enemy using Turbo.

Step 4: Miscellaneous achievements | Total points: 45

Bullet Train (10)
In one round, destroy 30 or more enemies

Very simple, and will probably just be earned on later levels. If not, you can delay a bit to shoot more enemies by standing still, or looking for enemies to kill on your map.

Slack Shot (10)
Finish any round without dying or firing a shot

Do this on level 1. You can use invincibility for this. Not too tricky, but may require more track changing to avoid dying.

Fuel Saver (10)
Get an end of round bonus of 4500 points or more without dying

You will need to beat a level with basically a full energy meter. Be very conservative with your energy usage and watch for oil. Try to fire as few shots as possible, and avoid invincibility unless there's an oil truck/tower nearby.

Crazy Train (10)
Destroy five enemies in one boost

Easy on later levels: just wait for a bunch, hit invincibility and just stop or go left so they run into you.

You're Slick (5)
Collect five oil pick-ups in one life and round

Just keep an eye out - you'll probably get this while going for Fuel Saver if you don't get it by accident earlier.

Step 5: Multi-track drifting | Total points: 10

Multi-Track Drifting!? (10)
Complete a round without dying and while switching lanes no fewer than once every 5 seconds

Ok, this is the tough one that definitely took me the longest. As always, I recommend using the first stage for the least chances of death, but it is certainly not easy.

There will be a trigger icon, but no timer, so you'll have to time that 5 seconds in your head. Early on in the level it's pretty easy to avoid.

When you are about 3/4 of the way through the level you start getting chased by a large plane. It is crucial that you are on the middle track when going over the bridge or you will have no where to change tracks for a 5 second period. I would also recommend using your invincibility here to go a bit faster.

choo choo u lose

  • No chance of swapping on this route

At the very end stretch I would also recommend being in the middle to give a little more leeway and one final track swap right before the station.

Conclusion

Super Locomotive is a great game that feels incredibly modern for a 1982 release. I want to thank the Unwanted team for picking this game out, and lizstar for developing some really fun and fair achievements for this fun and unique game.
