Summon Night: Swordcraft Story Missable Achievements Guide - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki

Hello, and welcome to my missable achievements guide for Summon Night: Swordcraft Story, a Game Boy Advance entry in the Summon Night franchise. The premise is that you are the son/daughter of a Craftlord, or an expert Craftknight (basically a warrior blacksmith) who died three years ago under unknown circumstances, and you seek to replace him as the Craftlord of Iron while dealing with fierce competition by improving your skills and levels. You are aided by a summon, which is determined by some questions asked to you at the beginning of the game. A big shoutout goes to Akirazord for providing me with some tips and information, along with answering my numerous questions. I doubt this guide would have been as accurate as I would have liked if it hadn’t been for their input.

There will be story spoilers involved from here on, as I need to explain some gameplay mechanics. Some of the information might be inherently spoilery. If you wish to enjoy the story for the first time, please stop reading now.

As far as choosing your summon is concerned, the spells you learn will be the same, but will be acquired in a different order. For instance, I chose Zantek in my run, so I earned Enchant Spark first. Akirazord told me that they picked Rasho first, so they got Enchant Fire first. As long as your summon levels up enough, they will learn everything eventually. The only exception is the endgame spell they learn, which is based upon the element they represent. Kutty learns Giga Hurricane, Rasho learns Inferno Volcano, Sugar learns Bursting Rapids, and Zantek learns Mega Voltage. There is a fifth summon that you can switch to in the postgame on Day 13, but you’re also able to go back to your original summon whenever you want if you choose it, making this more of a cosmetic change aside from the final elemental spell.

The game itself is quite straightforward, but there are some unintuitive missables, most especially with crafting specific weapons. Some weapons can only be learned by actually breaking an opponent’s weapon during a battle. To break a weapon, whether it is your own or an opponent’s, the weapon’s green durability meter must fall to 0 to cause it to shatter. If it happens to your character and they don’t have another weapon equipped, you can default to their smithing hammer for attacks, which has infinite durability but is very slow to use, and also increases item drops from random enemies. If you are forced to default to the hammer during a scripted fight and you don’t have other resources to pull you through like magic, it’s essentially a game over. If an opponent’s weapon is shattered, the battle immediately ends and you learn the recipe for it.

For this reason, I will be throwing in the moments you’d want to break opponents’ weapons to learn those recipes alongside the other actually missable achievements themselves. You will need to craft some of these weapons and give them to NPCs to learn additional recipes that can’t be acquired elsewhere. They are all tied to the Swordmaster, Axemaster, Spearmaster, Brawlmaster and Drillmaster achievements, which involve crafting one of every type of weapon from their respective categories. There aren’t a lot of other missables to worry about, so this guide won’t be particularly long compared to other guides I’ve written. You’ll still want to pay attention for these weapons though.

Don’t fret if you actually miss most of these. The post-game introduces the exhibition match, a series of eight battles against the various characters with breakable weapons. It is still more efficient and ideal to get them during their respective times in the story. Treat their achievement entries as more of an alert to do them during their story moments, rather than as actual missables that you can never get again. The only exceptions are Ureksa’s first two spears, Ureksa Spear and Ureksa Spear EX. Those MUST be broken during their respective story moments. The third spear, Neo Ureksa Spear, is the only one available in the exhibition match. Furthermore, there is a sidequest involving Ureksa’s first spear that is potentially missable if you don’t break it in the first battle against him.

If you’re worried about whether or not the techniques that Bron teaches the protagonist are missable, they are not. You’re able to advance the plot and have him teach you the weapon recipes whenever you want. The cabin inside his boat is accessible on Day 7, and you can read a book on his desk to learn any recipes if you’re not at the Silver Guild.

As I briefly mentioned above, there are missable sidequests involving each of the five weapon categories – Sword, Axe, Spear, Knuckle, and Drill. You need to speak to specific NPCs on particular days to make progress with these. Some just require you to talk to them, others will ask a question that require the correct answer, and others will want a weapon from you. You need to be careful with this, as some of the weapons they ask for will be breakable weapons from your opponents. Not all of them are needed, but some of them are, specifically Varil’s, Kenon’s, Razzy’s, Ariel’s, and Ureksa’s first spear. Keep your eyes peeled for these, as there aren’t any achievements for completing these sidequests, but they are tied to the 100% weapon crafting achievements mentioned above. I used Spatvark’s guide, which is very detailed and explains everything you need to do to advance these sidequests.

As far as Mystic Ore farming goes, I strongly suggest you use whatever you have to only craft weapons needed for sidequests. It is a real chore to try and stockpile a bunch early in the game because the enemies only drop them one or two at a time, making it a serious hassle to craft everything possible in any given day. Around Day 7 or 8 is when the Mystic Ore costs start to skyrocket, so it isn’t practical to try and farm for them at that point. There will be better opportunities to farm the ores much later in the game, and those weapons are either offshoots of the weapons Bron teaches you or from recipes taught to you by NPCs. As long as you do the sidequests for those NPCs’ recipes, you will be fine with holding off on crafting these.

If you’re struggling to craft all of the weapons, I used the lists provided on StrategyWiki to keep everything straight. You have several subcategories with these weapons – Bron’s default recipes, their Mystic Ore counterparts, recipes obtained from NPCs, and the character-specific weapons.

I think that’s it for gameplay mechanics, so let’s get into the achievements themselves.

MISSABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

What Pride? (5)

Play along with Sanary's "quiz" for one of her materials

Missable achievement #1. On Day 1, you need to go into the labyrinth to find Iron Ore, which is where you bump into Sanary. She gives you three questions, which you need to adjust your answer for the third question depending on if your protagonist is male or female. Just answer her favorably, with the following responses:

  • A female Craftknight is greater than a male one. True or false?
  1. It doesn't make a difference. [Nothing]
  2. True! (Q2)
  • A female Craftknight looks cooler than a male one! True or false?
  1. They're both the same. [Nothing]
  2. A female one looks cooler! (Q3)
  • I, Sanary, will be the one to win the tournament. True or false?
  1. I'm the one who will be victorious! [Matchbox if Pratty, else Nothing]
  2. The victory... may go to Sanary... [Matchbox if Cleru, else Nothing]

Chaves Champion (10)

Shatter Chaves' weapon, then craft it

Breakable weapon alert. This is the first limited-time weapon you need to shatter during the tournament on Day 2. You have a second opportunity on Day 8 if you miss it here, or in the exhibition match on Day 13. His sword is the first breakable weapon from that category, the second being Sanary’s.

Opportunist (5)

Make a shady deal with Nigelle

Missable achievement #2. When you and Bron return from Vance Cape on Day 3, your protagonist will be approached by Nigelle. He offers to buy 10 Iron Sabers for 500 boam. Accept the offer, make the swords, then go into B4 of the labyrinth and go into the room with the heal pod to find Sanary. Answer her however you want, return to the Silver Guild to get your letter, then go to the castle and try to enter the tournament. Sanary will stop you and say that you’ve been scammed, so choose to confront Nigelle at the harbor to get the swords back. Make a save before this because there’s a breakable weapon alert here. You will wind up in a fight against Varil, the blonde boy who has been harassing the protagonist.

Varil Vanquisher (10)

Shatter Varil's weapon, then craft it

Breakable weapon alert. Guard against Varil, goading him into attacking the hero until the durability of his spear reaches 0. Heal up and use defense magic to improve your survivability. Varil’s spear needs to be crafted not just to get the achievement, but to also give it to a Craftknight in Middle Wystern, which awards a knuckle recipe. Of all of the weapon categories, spears have the most number of breakable weapons due to Varil’s as well as Ureksa’s three spears.

Kenon Konqueror (10)

Shatter Kenon's weapon, then craft it

Breakable weapon alert. Kenon is the protagonist’s opponent in the tournament on Day 3. Since it’s an axe you’re trying to break and they are very durable and hard-hitting weapons, this may require some considerable grinding if you don’t have the skill level to fight him head-on. I had Pratty at level 15 and Zantek at level 14. Since my chosen summon was Zantek, I had Astral Guard and Healing Spell, as well as the Mineral Bracelet equipped to improve my hero’s defense. What spells you have may differ with your summon. Also boost your chosen weapon’s TEC stat, simply by defeating a lot of mooks with it equipped. What the maxed TEC stat value is will vary by weapon, so check it frequently until the number whites out, indicating it can’t improve any further. This will increase its durability so it doesn’t break so quickly while guarding.

During the fight, I activated Astral Guard and had Kenon attack my hero to wear out his axe as much as I could, healing when needed. Once both spells were exhausted, I relied on guards and surviving his hits before the axe finally broke. To bait Kenon into attacking, perform a few light taps on the guard button to lower your guard, then immediately defend when he goes into his attacking animation. If you just stand there guarding, he won’t do anything. This was essentially my strategy for the later weapon breaks – acting as a tank to either take or guard against their attacks, healing up and reapplying Astral Guard. This strategy does take quite a lot of grinding though, so if you’re able to improve your combat skills to be more efficient on time instead, do so. One thing I did to pass the time was to craft every possible weapon available, as well as boosting their TEC stats until I was satisfied.

Kenon’s axe is the only breakable weapon from that category to worry about for the entire game. After crafting it, give it to the man in the southeastern house of Lower Wystern to get another recipe from him. For some reason this achievement is marked as missable, but it actually isn’t. Giving the weapon to the NPC is missable though.

Razzy Relinquisher (10)

Shatter Razzy's weapon, then craft it

Breakable weapon alert. Break Razzy’s knuckles during the tournament round on Day 4. Her knuckles are the only breakable weapon from that category to worry about for the entire game. Craft one set of knuckles, then go to the northeastern house on the water in Lower Wystern and give it to the man in green to get another recipe.

Ariel Ace (10)

Shatter Ariel's weapon, then craft it

Breakable weapon alert. Break Ariel’s drill during the tournament round on Day 5. Although the story makes you think you’re fighting two opponents simultaneously, you’re only going to be fighting one. Her drill is the first breakable weapon from that category, the second being Lubert’s. Craft one, then bring it to the same house with the NPC you gave the Matchbox to on Day 2 and give the drill to her to earn another recipe. This makes progress towards the drill sidequest, which you want to do for Dinner is Served.

Ureska Usurper (10)

Shatter all of Ureksa's weapons, then craft them

Missable achievement #3, and doubles as a major breakable weapon alert. You will be confronting Ureska three separate times throughout the game, with the first time being in the volcano on Day 8. All of his weapons are spears, making it the category with the most breakable weapons compared to the others. You MUST break his first spear, Ureksa Spear, along with the second spear Ureksa Spear EX on Day 9! Those two spears are the only truly missable breakable weapons in the whole game, as his third weapon Neo Ureksa Spear is available either on Day 12, or in the exhibition match on Day 13.

Lubert Lieutenant (10)

Shatter Lubert's weapon, then craft it

Breakable weapon alert. Lubert is fought during the events of Day 10, making him the only other opponent besides Varil and Ureska who is fought outside the tournament. His weapon is the second drill to be acquired this way.

Sanary Sensation (10)

Shatter Sanary’s weapon, then craft it

Breakable weapon alert. Sanary is the opponent in the semi-finals on Day 11. Her weapon is the second sword acquired this way.

Stubborn Knight (10)

Defeat Evil Metal without moving or jumping

This is not missable, but is an alert for having to fight a postgame boss a specific way. Evil Metal is fought on floor 59 of the labyrinth, and is only accessible on Day 13 when the remaining 50 levels are opened up to you. This and the following three bosses are repeatable by exiting the labyrinth and going back in. Evil Metal and Inferno Kirin’s achievements are more like heads up than actually being missable, but Omen Fish’s is missable for a different reason.

Angler Knight (10)

Defeat Omen Fish with the Splash Deluxe as your only weapon. (Spells and hammer okay)

Missable achievement #4. Omen Fish is found in level 79 of the labyrinth. You need to complete all of the spear sidequests to earn a spear recipe for Fish Hoarder. Craft one with Mystic Ore to create the Splash Deluxe. Have this as the only weapon in your weapon slots, with absolutely nothing else besides your accessory equipped. The missable aspect comes in the spear sidequests you need to do throughout the game.

Dinner is Served (5)

Equip the Ladle, Giant Fork, Sweet Drill, and a Pumpkin accessory

Missable achievement #5. You won’t be getting this until the postgame on Day 13, but you need to make progress toward it throughout the rest of the game. You just need to equip three specific weapons and an accessory themed after a pumpkin. An accessory can be rarely dropped from pumpkin enemies anywhere in the labyrinth. The Ladle is a recipe acquired from Sakuro if you agree to do some running around for him on Day 5. The Giant Fork recipe is gained after defeating Omen Fish in level 79 of the labyrinth. The Sweet Drill recipe is the reward for finishing all of the drill sidequests, and is the missable aspect. These begin on Day 2, and must be done in this order:

Day 2

  • Get the Matchbox item from Sanary's quiz or from Pumpkin mob
  • Go to the southwest corner of Lower Wystern and into the house on water
  • Give a Matchbox to the man
  • Reward: #02 Axe Tech

Day 6

  • Break Ariel’s drill on Day 5’s tournament and craft it
  • Go to the house on the water to the south (where you give the Matchbox)
  • Talk to the woman in orange and give her Ariel's Drill
  • Reward: #11 Spear Tech

Day 10

  • Go to the drill-loving Craftknight in southern Lower Wystern
  • Give her a Terra Rotor (learn from Bron, your master)
  • Reward: #21 Spear Tech

Day 11

  • Go back to drill lover from Day 10 and talk to her
  • Reward: #25 Drill Tech (Sweet Drill)

Hammer Knight (10)

Defeat Inferno Kirin using only your hammer

Another postgame boss that needs to be fought a certain way, but is not missable. Inferno Kirin is fought on level 99 of the labyrinth. While the hammer is a terrible weapon, there is no rule saying you can’t use magic or items. You can enchant your hammer with magic, or level up a lot so your blows are doing as much damage as reasonably possible.

CONCLUSION

That should be everything you need to know to get all of the achievements for this game. The information for what’s missable and what isn’t is a little all over the place, but as long as you’re meticulous with breaking weapons and following a good walkthrough, you should do fine. Since this is a game featured in the Cheevomon League event, I figured I’d get this done quickly to hopefully improve the information and strategies needed to complete this game. Otherwise, it’s not too bad of a game, even if its combat feels like a more sluggish version of an early Tales game (Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia, etc.). Its ambience and item creation mechanics made me think of a watered down version of the Atelier series. Even if you’re not participating in the event, give it a try regardless.
