Shin Megami Tensei PS1 monster checklist - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki

This is a document that compiles two separate types of monster checklists for the Playstation version of Shin Megami Tensei. Both checklists were brought together here to cover for the achievements Atrocities in My Backyard, Pokemon Hunter, and Professional Demon Hunter, all of which require you to fight one of every possible regular demon (not bosses) to see their details. This does not include the super-rare enemies David, High Priest and Pale Rider. These are all your bog-standard random encounters, with some one-time enemies found in specific static locations.

Completing 100% of the bestiary is only possible on the Law or Neutral routes. The Four Heavenly Kings (Zouchouten, Koumokuten, Jikokuten, and Bishamonten) are fought in those two routes, but in the Chaos route, they are recruited, meaning their battles are bypassed altogether. You might think they’re flagged as bosses due to their importance in the story, but they actually are treated as regular enemies. Be sure not to work on the bestiary in the Chaos route, or you will cause yourself a lot of needless frustration.

Yes, I know the list is messy, but I can’t be bothered to clean it up. Please don’t spam me with messages saying that Demon X can be found in Location Y. I will be utterly inundated with messages if I tried to outline every single encounter for every single location, and I cannot be bothered to go back and play the whole game to verify everything. I personally went through the locations list for my run and verified at least one instance of every demon.

Destroyed Tokyo Overworld

The Post-Apocalypse Tokyo segment of the story has the highest number of demons to analyze, but it too is a temporary overworld that will eventually be replaced with Flooded Tokyo. I actually recommend saving the overworld exploration for after completing the Heroine’s Subconscious story arc because otherwise she will constantly interrupt you while you’re trying to traverse the city, which gets annoying really fast.

Four Kings Manors

Completing the four manors is the final opportunity to get everything in Post-Apocalypse Tokyo before it is permanently replaced with Flooded Tokyo. The most ideal situation is to have every possible demon scanned prior to fighting the Four Heavenly Kings for the story quest. I already mentioned this at the beginning, but I’ll reiterate it again - since fighting them is only possible in the Law and Neutral routes, this makes getting all of the entries impossible in a Chaos run due to these guys being recruited instead.
