Shin Megami Tensei PS1 missable achievements guide - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki
Set developed by Pie345, guide written by benit149
Hello, and welcome to my missable achievements guide for the Playstation 1 version of Shin Megami Tensei, a port of the original SNES version. The Game Boy Advance also got a port, and none of them saw release in the West. Thus, you will want to patch the game if you want English text. I explain all of the gameplay mechanics in my RAGuide for the SNES version’s set, which I strongly suggest you do to brush up on the basics, particularly with allocating status points to your four characters at the very beginning. I won’t cover any of that here to avoid redundancy. My aim for this guide is to explain the missables tailored to the PS1 version, with little to no regard for what is in the SNES version. I may make comparisons here and there, but I’ll keep it strictly to this version as much as possible so you don’t need to look back and forth between the two. The alignment-specific missables may ask you to take a look at it, but that’s about it.
Gameplay-wise, this version is essentially identical to the SNES version, but has some quality of life improvements like explanations for what spells and items do. It’s a dungeon crawler JRPG set in modern Tokyo, and your mission is to find out why demons are infesting the city and help to avert a crisis by recruiting demons and working together with a small group of other humans. The only time you’re not exploring a dungeon is on the overworld, where your character is represented as a blue icon.
GAMEPLAY MECHANICS
Alignment
The game has three endings, depending on your alignment of either Law, Neutral, or Chaos. I’ll alert you to the best branch-off point for the endings, as well as help you plan for specific long-term achievements. Like in the SNES version’s guide, I’ll also break down the late-game missables into their respective routes for better organization. Get familiar with how the alignment system works early on because your choices will eventually start to matter for things like your story route, what demons you can summon, and what equipment your allies can wear. I’ll alert you to what the ideal branch-off point is to make your backup saves with MAJOR ALIGNMENT ALERT!!!, if you want to look it up ahead of time.
Unlike in the SNES version where you could look at your stats on your RA profile, no such detection was made for checking your alignment in this version. There are two ways you can check; what your blue icon is doing on the overworld, and in the Heretic/Cathedral of Shadows facility. The overworld icon will behave differently depending on your alignment – swaying back and forth for Neutral, spinning clockwise for Law, and counter-clockwise for Chaos. In the Heretic facility, try to do a demon fusion, and Main Hero’s name will be color coded light blue for Law, white for Neutral, and red for Chaos. Neither of these are exactly the best method for checking, but I guess it’s better than nothing. Once you see any one of these behaviors, you’re good to go for advancing your chosen route.
Spells
I do mention in the other guide about a spell called Estoma, which prevents all enemy encounters on any given floor. Princess Kushinada is a Law-aligned demon that has it, but she can only be acquired through fusing specific demons. Salamander is likewise a Neutral-aligned ally with Estoma that you can get from trading gemstones at the Rag shop. While it’s convenient for getting around, if you intend to master the achievement set, you might not want to constantly use this spell for two reasons: analyzing all of the demons throughout the game, and leveling up Main Hero so he can equip the Jesus or Skyfiend (a.k.a. Tenma) Equipment (depending on the route you’re doing) at level 65. Both of these tasks are very involved and were not required for the SNES version’s set, but are here.
Speaking of spells, I do want to highlight the Kaja family of magics like Tarakaja, Makakaja, Sukukaja, Rakakaja and such. They buff a particular stat for the entire party, and are absolutely fantastic since you can stack them several times. They are far more reliable than debuffing spells because it’s not always a guarantee that it will stick on an enemy, whereas the Kaja spells will always boost your allies. If you’re struggling with a boss, don’t pass these spells up. Tarakaja (buffs Attack) is especially godlike when you have Nerve Bullets or Magic Bullets at your disposal in the mid to late game. The downside is that the spells tend to be found on demons rather than on your human allies, so you need to find suitable minions to act as support casters. Some demons I recommend for Tarakaja include Goblin, Hobgoblin, Shuten-Douji, Jikokuten (Chaos route only), and Cu Chulainn.
Difficulty Settings
Before starting any playthrough, you are given two difficulty options; Normal or Expert. If you’re seeking to master the set, choose Expert. While the achievements for the overall game aren’t affected, the three endings themselves are. If you’re not looking to master the set and have a more leisurely time (in an SMT game?? LOL!), choose Normal. Expert retains the same high difficulty curve as the SNES version, while Normal is much more nerfed, although status-inducing bullets won’t work as well in Normal.
There will be major story spoilers involved from this point forward. If you wish not to be spoiled, please stop reading here.
MISSABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
Atrocities in My Backyard (10)
AND
AND
Professional Demon Hunter (50)
Analyze every possible demon that appears in 199x, Pre-Flood, and Flooded Tokyo respectively.
These are achievements you will be working towards for the whole game. The storyline is broken up into three distinct segments; 199x Tokyo, Pre-Flood Tokyo (or Post-Apocalypse Tokyo), and Flooded Tokyo. The first segment ends when you fight Thor in the American Embassy, and the second when you defeat/recruit the Four Heavenly Kings at their mansions and go to the Cathedral to report your progress. To analyze a demon, the Main Hero needs to obtain the Devil Analysis Program from an NPC named Stephen in his cell at the Hospital, which is the very first dungeon in the game. The game will then automatically include new entries as you fight demons, so you don’t have to use the Analyze command or Spyglass items.
Thankfully, the community has come together to compile various monster checklists, which I have brought together here into one document. One section of the checklist was done by Kiutgh which sorts demons by locations they appear in, while the other was done by Orph which sorts demons by their type.
Something I did notice while going through the demon checklist for my own playthrough was that the Four Heavenly Kings – Zouchouten, Koumokuten, Jikokuten, and Bishamonten – are all enemies included in the check for Pokemon Hunter. You’re able to fight them in the Law and Neutral routes, but you’re forced to recruit them in the Chaos route, causing you to lose out on their entries. Due to this caveat, it is thus impossible to complete the entire bestiary on the Chaos route. Thankfully I had figured this out while doing the Law route as my first run, so I didn’t run into this nasty late-game problem.
I barely know how to use this thing (25)
Finish the game (any alignment) without having Stephen upgrade the COMP.
This and the following achievement are things you will want to prepare for ahead of time. You’ll encounter Stephen throughout the game, who is able to upgrade Main Hero’s COMP with discs found throughout. This allows you to recruit and store more demons. This restriction forces you to limit the number of demon allies you can have in your party to a maximum of six. Since you’ll be working towards three separate endings, plan for at least one of them to have no COMP upgrades.
The upgrades that Stephen gives Main Hero automatically during the story do not count toward this. These upgrades refer to the optional ones from handing in discs to him. The next achievement is the exact opposite of this one, so plan for it too.
Have Stephen upgrade your Demon Capacity to the maximum.
Conversely, you want at least one of your runs to have Stephen upgrade the COMP to maximum. This means dueling all of the demon summoners and earning the discs from them.
I would suggest getting the upgrades done in your Chaos run since you’ll be getting the Four Heavenly Kings, and you’ll want all the space you can get for them plus your other demons, including Ravana and Beelzebub. The Neutral run is also quite demanding since you’ll be killing every boss in the game, but you can get away with just having a select number of top-tier demons. The Law route may be the most lenient one for this restriction, although you do want three spaces available for the three angels in the final dungeon when you need to fuse the Angel Ring. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have Princess Kushinada around for Estoma in the Law route for this reason, especially since you don’t have to worry about missable demons at that point in the story anymore.
Chest-related Missables
I won’t cover every individual chest achievement here, but the basic premise is that 199x and Post-Apocalypse Tokyo are both missable segments of the entire story, so you need to grab every chest possible before triggering the events that cause Flooded Tokyo to occur. Flooded Tokyo is the final map update, so there won’t be any more missables then. Yes, this includes opening booby-trapped chests. If you’re worried about the alignment-specific armors being included, they are not. There is one specific exception for Exploding Incense where you have to be on the Neutral route to access a unique chest there, but all of the other chest-related missables can be done in any of the routes. This includes the alignment-specific gear found in the upper and lower floors of the Cathedral. I’ll explain the details at the appropriate time.
For Antediluvian Antiques, where any chests outside the Cathedral are found, there are four in the Tokyo Government Office, and two in Sugamo Prison. There is a seventh chest found in the Imperial Palace, but it is not counted.
For the Cathedral, it is one of the most disorienting and headache-inducing dungeons in all of JRPG history. Like, ever. I think only the Great Crystal from Final Fantasy XII would be worse, and that’s stretching it. Searching for the treasures between 1F and B1 is especially bad because those two floors are interconnected, and you need to constantly go up and down between them to reach the chests. There are 12 chests to look for between 1F and B1 (6 on each floor), so look carefully and mark down each one you get. The remaining 24 are scattered between the upper and lower floors, 12 on each side, which is easier to manage since they aren’t connected to each other. None of the chests containing gemstones are counted either, so you don’t have to worry about dealing with the ones that require the secret areas to reach them. You still need to find the Amenomi Sword (Sword of Heaven), Megiddo Fire, Kurikara Sword and Peacemaker in those secret areas though.
The Man, The Myth, The Machine (10)
Find and defeat Bigfoot.
This guy is found in the Echo Building where you’ll be fighting Douman shortly. He’s in 2F within the same room where you fight a Brownie as a static encounter. Bigfoot’s appearance is indeed a random chance, and you only get one shot at it. If Bigfoot doesn’t spawn, reset and try again. Not only that, he has a chance to run away. Oh yeah, and you need to analyze him for the demon collection achievements. RNG within RNG plus demon analysis for the completionists. What good times…
Defeat Douman without having Cerberus summoned.
AND
Pascal the Dog is NOT Here (3)
Fuse Pascal into Cerberus.
You’re able to bring Main Hero’s dog Pascal to the Cathedral of Shadows (known as the Jakyou, Mansion, or Heretic facility in other versions/translations) in Inogashira Park, then fuse him with any one of your other demons to create Cerberus, who is hilariously overpowered for your party at this point in the story. Defeating Douman with Cerberus in the party is an utterly trivial fight, so for He Don’t Bite, you don’t want to fuse Pascal prior to encountering Douman. However, once Douman is down, you will lose Pascal for the rest of the game, so you don’t have an opportunity to do the fusing afterward. I suggest ignoring the fusion until you make a save just before fighting Douman, defeat him, immediately reset, then do the fusion to get Pascal the Dog is NOT Here and carry on with the game. Cerberus will return to the party late in the game, so the fusion will be worth it.
For the boss fight without Cerberus in your party, you will want to come extra prepared. Douman’s most dangerous ability isn’t an attack, but rather the spell Shibaboo, which can bind an ally for a random number of turns. It is not paralysis, so the spell Paraladi will not remove this status effect. You do have to wait it out and hope the binding comes undone for that character quickly, especially if it’s on Law Hero. He’s able to dish out some good damage with his Zan spells, so leveling him up to acquire Zanma is a smart idea. Do some grinding to acquire items that can be sold at Kichijoji Mall, particularly Jewels which sell for 5000 yen, allowing you to buy the very pricey MP5 Machine Gun and Unsigned Blade for everyone, along with the best armor available. Buying medicines and stocking up on Magic Stones from fights will be helpful in case your healers are caught by Shibaboo.
As far as demon allies go, the only one I brought with me was Goblin, who can cast Tarakaja to boost physical attack power, and Makakaja to do the same for magical power. If Law Hero learns Zanma, stick to casting Makakaja to boost his offense and dedicate the other two humans to healing with items if needed. Zanma + Makakaja will wreck Douman with ease. I find that the demons in this part of the game don’t seem to survive very well against Douman’s heavy-hitting attacks, and don’t deal great damage themselves, so using one in a support role was my strategy. If you don’t want to put in the effort into doing a big grind for Zanma, Zan + Makakaja can act as a replacement.
Have Stephen upgrade your Demon Capacity in the Laboratory.
If you’re planning for the COMP upgrades ahead of time, this is the first one to concern yourself with. After defeating Douman and transmitting to the Laboratory, you can find Stephen in one of the rooms on 1F. After answering some of his questions, he’ll offer to upgrade the COMP’s demon capacity. You can bypass this altogether, and since you need one run where you never upgrade the COMP, now is the time to make a backup save. Since you have three save slots to work with, it’s a simple matter of making two saves with the upgrades and one without.
As I recommended above, I did all of the upgrades in my Chaos and Neutral runs, and ignored them in my Law run. I opted to keep the upgrades for the Neutral run due to the large number of bosses and the need for good demon allies, plus needing to do all of the special demon fusion/recruitment achievements without worrying about alignment restrictions. Then I organized my saves to be Law in slot 1, Neutral in slot 2, and Chaos in slot 3. From there I completed the Law route first to get it out of the way so I could freely do the upgrades in the other two runs. However you decide to do it, you will need to plan ahead for those achievements.
Find and defeat Cyak.
Just like with Bigfoot before, Cyak is a rare demon found in a specific static encounter location where a Goblin normally shows up. This time it’s in Shinjuku Mall. Starting from the Heretic/Cathedral of Shadows facility in the far northwest, tap R1 to strafe right, then head straight through two rooms. Cyak is immune to physical damage, but a single Zanma from Law Hero can defeat it.
Find Ozawa and defeat his Baykok in 199x.
While this mini-quest is available for a while during 199x, the last opportunity to do it is before speaking to Heroine in Shinjuku’s bar after rescuing her from the Tokyo Government Building. This is because the party will split up, and the small story sequence with Ozawa involves Chaos Hero. The building that Ozawa is in is either just north of the government building, or a bit northwest from Shinjuku mall. It’s a short dungeon, so go through and speak to Ozawa, who forces the party to fight a Baykok.
Defeat Gotou in the Ichigaya Military Base. (Neutral/Law)
While this isn’t marked as missable, it actually should be. During the Gotou/Thorman story arc, you need to speak to both representatives and listen to their sides of the story. You then have the option of resisting either Gotou or Thorman first. Fight Gotou first. If you fight Thorman first, the story will advance where he fires nuclear missiles on Tokyo and you’re whisked away to Vajradhatu, so obviously you’d lose your opportunity to fight Gotou there.
A protip is that anytime prior to fighting Thor, have Main Hero equip Heroine’s Nerve Bullets and let her use regular ammunition. They will be splitting apart shortly, and the Nerve Bullets are incredibly powerful for their ability to put entire groups of enemies to sleep with a machine gun equipped. Nerve Bullets won’t be available for purchase until after clearing Vajradhatu, so Heroine’s bullets will absolutely carry you through this dungeon.
Find all of your lost Demons and Treasures in Vajradhatu. (Including the 10 MAG obtained in spots where there is no Demon)
If you’re familiar with the SNES version, you’ll know this location better as Kongokai (or the Diamond Realm, a term that occurs in Buddhism). When you first appear in Vajradhatu, your current demon allies are nowhere to be found - they have been scattered throughout the dungeon in different rooms. Explore the dungeon and re-recruit them, plus visit the rooms that have no demons waiting for you plus an additional room with a chest containing some magnetite. Get a map handy for this because this dungeon is quite disorienting.
Rare enemy notice! While there isn’t an achievement for finding and defeating Yaksini in Vajradhatu, you may do so anyway to complete your bestiary if you want. It’s found in the same room where a Tanki can be fought in a static encounter, near the Red Phantasm’s room in the lower left of the dungeon. Yaksini is found later in the game if you happen to miss it here or don’t want to be bothered with traversing the dungeon repeatedly.
Find and defeat Arch Angel.
Arch Angel is another rare demon, found in Shibuya 1F in the room where a Rusalka is fought as a static encounter. If you’re having trouble finding Rusalka, it’s in the same spot where you fall down to from the hole in Shibuya 2F.
Give a Revival Incense to the Law Hero's Girlfriend in Roppongi.
This can be done anytime from when you can reach Roppongi up until the end of Post-Apocalypse Tokyo (buy a Hiranya/Hexagram in Shinjuku’s Junk Shop for story reasons too). Once you can access Roppongi, go there and find Law Hero’s girlfriend imprisoned in the Disco room there. She asks you to use a Revival Incense on her so she can be free of her undead immortality. Post-Apocalypse Tokyo introduces a new type of shop called Rag’s, where you can exchange various gemstones for some good items or demons. You want to find a Diamond in Shibuya and exchange it at Rag’s for the Revival Incense, then use it on the girlfriend to complete this mini-quest. It doesn’t matter if Law Hero is in the party or not. The only reward is a hefty shift towards the Law alignment, so you can use this event to adjust your alignment if you want.
Find and defeat Backbeard.
Yet another rare demon, found in Ginza 1F in the room where a Hobgoblin is fought as a static encounter.
Collect all chests in the Police Station and Ginza. (Neutral only)
You will have to be on the Neutral path to complete this achievement! A chest in Ginza B2 is found after beating Echidna and Haniel to get to the Cathedral. You cannot access this chest if you’re on either of the other routes, so keep this in the back of your mind if you’re planning out your playthroughs. Speak to the old man in Ginza who told you that he would provide a path “if all other routes are closed off,” meaning you need his help to reach the Cathedral. You will be in a new area of Ginza exclusive to the Neutral route where the chest containing a Magic Incense can be found.
Defeat Yama after being sent to prison. (Neutral/Law)
AND
Agree to stop the completion of the Cathedral to the Yama. (Neutral/Chaos)
MAJOR ALIGNMENT ALERT!!!
Here’s the ideal branch-off point for choosing your alignment that I mentioned in my opening spiel. Fighting Yama is the most identifiable turning point for the story before you commit to a specific alignment route and go around completing the tasks assigned to each one. Make a save in Ginza before heading to Ikebukuro, where Chaos Hero will apprehend the party and present them to Yama. You may want to do one choice, immediately reset, then do the other to get these out of the way, particularly if you’re just doing a single playthrough. Accepting Yama’s offer gives you a large shift in Chaos, while rejecting it favors you in the Law alignment more.
If you want to recover from either of these choices and make a backup save for all three routes, you can do some grinding and use the opposite type of healing facility to at least shift you back to Neutral. I suggest rejecting Yama’s offer only so you can get some experience points from fighting him and Niou, after which you can grind easily in Ikebukuro and use the Gaian facility to go from Law to Neutral.
Note that Shibuya’s eastern and southern buildings are available after speaking with both Yama in Ikebukuro and Law Hero in Shinagawa. Refer to the Rebuilding Missables section below for further details.
Receive a demon from the Devil Summoner in Tokyo Destiny Land.
Regardless of which route you’re proceeding on, you will want to make a pit stop in T.D.L. to fight the Devil Summoner there. Upon defeating them, you’re given the option to accept a free demon from them, so do precisely that to get this achievement. Declining the offer as well as not having enough space will cause you to miss this, so be sure to have a spot available for the new demon.
Rare enemy notice!_ While there isn’t an achievement for finding and defeating Orcus in T.D.L., you may do so anyway to complete your bestiary if you want. Orcus is found in one of the two rooms where a Gorgon is fought as a static encounter on 1F. If you don’t know where those rooms are, refer to this map first to make my explanation easier to understand. Look for the two chests containing Core Shields in the far northwest and northeast corners respectively. Gorgon’s rooms are one space directly south of those chest rooms. You can only fight one Gorgon in one room per attempt, so pick a side and reset if you don’t get Orcus. This demon is indeed counted towards Pokemon Hunter, so if you want to get it prior to Flooded Tokyo, consider doing this. It isn’t missable if you decide to ignore it.
Create the Hinokagutsuchi through Sword Fusion.
There are two swords created through fusion at the Heretic facility that you will need to concern yourself with for the achievement set; the Hinokagutsuchi (Kagutsuchi’s Blade) for Main Hero, and the Karyuken (Fire Dragon Sword) for Heroine. For the Hinokagutsuchi, you need to find the Kusanagi sword in Shinagawa, then fuse it with three elemental demons onto the sword in a specific order: Sylph -> Undine -> Salamander. These demons are only acquired from trading in gems at the Rag’s shop. It is possible to sell the Kusanagi by mistake, so don’t do it!
Create the Fire Dragon Sword through Sword Fusion.
To create the Karyuken for Heroine, you need to first acquire the base weapon Renki no Ken (Refined Sword) by either defeating Yaksha or Rakshasa enemies seen in the Four Heavenly Kings’ manors, or in two of the rebuilt buildings detailed below. Get the Renki no Ken as soon as you can before triggering Flooded Tokyo’s events, or you won’t be able to acquire one again. The other ingredient to find is Belial’s Pot, which is the item Yuriko stole from the party in Roppongi. Go down to the lower floors of the Cathedral and find Chaos Hero and his ‘girlfriend’ there. She reveals herself to be Yuriko, or as the demon Lilith, and depending on the route you’re on, she’ll either give it to you (Chaos) or you have to fight her for it (Law/Neutral). Now fuse the Renki no Ken with Belial’s Pot at the Heretic facility, and the Karyuken is all yours.
Don’t trigger Flooded Tokyo yet! We’re still not done with getting some missables!
Have you chosen your alignment? Then it’s time for me to separate the remaining missables into their respective routes. Just like in the SNES version’s RAGuide, I’ll split them into the Law-Neutral-Chaos order as before, and intentionally repeat achievements so you don’t have to look back and forth. I’ve purposely truncated the bosses though since I covered them enough in the SNES version’s guide. If you’ve gotten an achievement in one route and it’s present in another, just ignore it and move on.
However, this version also has the added task of visiting various buildings that are under reconstruction throughout Tokyo to acquire some nice treasures, which can be done in any route and was not required for the SNES version’s achievement set. I will throw in a special fourth category called Rebuilding Missables to cover these specifically. You need to get these done anytime after talking to Echidna for the first time but before triggering Flooded Tokyo.
REBUILDING MISSABLES
This sidequest involves visiting the various yellow buildings that become available as you progress through the game. The trick to this sidequest is that you need to visit the buildings during the correct moon phase in order to receive the good items. When you visit the building, an old man will congratulate your efforts in protecting Tokyo. He will then let you choose one of three boxes to open. Ordinarily, you would receive crappy one-time use items. If you visit during the correct moon phase however, you can get some excellent equipment. I’ll sort these according to availability, though ideally you ought to do them after meeting Echidna in Tokyo Destiny Land since that’s the last story event needed for this sidequest.
The Eastern Shinjuku Special (5)
Receive a Kuchinawa Sword, Claimh Solais, or a Valhalla Sword from the Eastern Shibuya Building after it’s rebuilt.
You need to meet Yama in Ikebukuro and Law Hero in Shinagawa for this building to be available. Warp to Shibuya, go to the city map, then head east to find the yellow building. You must open these chests during the Half-Moon phase. The left chest contains Kuchinawa’s Sword, the middle contains Claimh Solais, and the right contains Valhalla Sword. Of these weapons, I’d recommend getting either Kuchinawa’s Sword for the attack power, or Claimh Solais for selling.
Receive a Brionac, Vajra, or a Renki no Ken from the Northern Shibuya Building after it’s rebuilt.
You need to meet Yama in Ikebukuro and Law Hero in Shinagawa for this building to be available. Warp to Shibuya, go to the city map, then head north and west to the clearing south of the West Mansion. You must open these chests during the 3/8 Moon phase. The left chest contains Brionac, the middle contains Vajra, and the right contains the first of two Renki no Ken. If you haven’t found a Renki no Ken for fusing into the Karyuken yet, absolutely pick the right chest. You can also get one in the southern Ikebukuro building later.
Receive a Mage Mask, Moonlight Band, or Suwa Hosho's Helmet in the Ueno Building after it’s rebuilt.
You need to defeat Ladon in Ueno for this building to be available. Warp to Ueno, go to the city map, then head southwest from the northern Ueno entrance to the grove of trees with the building in the middle. You must open these chests during the Full Moon phase. The left chest contains Mage Mask, the middle chest contains Moonlight Band, and the right chest contains Suwa Hosho’s Helmet.
Receive a Plough Sword, Gae Bolg, or a Flying Trident Vajra from the Northern Ikebukuro Building after it’s rebuilt.
You need to meet Echidna in Tokyo Destiny Land for this building to be available. Warp to Ikebukuro, go to the city map, then head directly to northeast to the small yellow building. You must open these chests during the 5/8 Moon phase. The left chest contains Plough Sword, the middle chest contains Gae Bolg, and the right chest contains Flying Trident Vajra.
Who’s Building These Anyway? (5)
Receive a Refined Sword (Renki no Ken), Muramasa, or a Purifying Fan from the Southern Ikebukuro Building after it’s rebuilt.
You need to meet Echidna in Tokyo Destiny Land for this building to be available. Warp to Ikebukuro, go to the city map, then head due south and you'll come to a small building in the middle of some white buildings. You must open these chests during the 1/8 Moon phase. The left chest contains the second Renki no Ken, the middle chest contains Muramasa, and the right chest contains Purifying Fan.
The Sun and the Moon With a Spoon (5)
Receive a Headhunter's Spoon, Luna Blade, or a Sol Blade from the Southern Ginza Building after it’s rebuilt.
You need to meet Echidna in Tokyo Destiny Land for this building to be available. Warp to Ginza, go to the city map via the 1F exit heading upstairs, then head directly to the southwest where there is a small yellow building. You must open these chests during the New Moon phase. The left chest contains Headhunter’s Spoon, the middle chest contains Luna Blade, and the right chest contains Sol Blade.
Receive a Lotus Wand, Longinus, or a Death's Embrace from the Northern Ginza Building after it’s rebuilt.
You need to meet Echidna in Tokyo Destiny Land for this building to be available. Warp to Ginza, go to the city map via the 1F exit heading upstairs, then head due north a short ways and you'll come to the small yellow building. You must open these chests during the 2/8 Moon (or Quarter Moon) phase. The left chest contains Lotus Wand, the middle chest contains Longinus, and the right chest contains Death’s Embrace.
LAW ROUTE MISSABLES
Complete the Messianic Baptism. (Law only)
The Law and Chaos routes have their own baptism rituals to firmly secure you into their respective routes, thus allowing you to see their respective endings. Neutral has some different steps you need to follow. I suggest leveling Main Hero to level 65 so you can do the next achievement immediately after this one.
To complete the Law route’s baptism, go to the room where you speak to Law Hero in Shinagawa after defeating Echidna and he will thank you for your efforts and partially lock you into the route. Be sure your alignment is high Law before coming here. After the conversation, turn around and go back into the room to speak to a priest, who will baptise Main Hero and Heroine into the Messianic faith if your alignment is pure Law, finally locking you into the route for good.
Obtain the full set of Jesus Armor. (Law only)
Main Hero needs to be level 65, and the Messianic baptism needs to be done before you can progress with this. Go back to the same room in Shinagawa where you were baptised and speak to the priest, who will tell you that he opened four doors in 3F containing the individual pieces of Jesus Armor for Main Hero. Both this and the baptism must be done anytime before triggering Flooded Tokyo’s events.
Law Route Bosses
I don’t think I need to cover all of the bosses in detail again when I already did so in the SNES guide. They’re not too hard as long as you look up basic strategies and use Magic Bullets + Tarakaja. Of the large pool of bosses, you will be fighting the following:
- Echidna
- the Four Heavenly Kings
- Ravana and Indrajit
- Surt
- Astaroth
- Arioch
- Chaos Hero and Lilith
- Beelzebub (talk to Louis Cypher in Cathedral 6B, then leave the dungeon and swim a bit west before dipping south to a small island where Beelzebub is)
- Asura
You would also want to recruit Vishnu in the Tokyo Government Office when you’re fighting Ravana and Indrajit. Get the Belial Pot from Lilith as well to make the Fire Dragon Sword when you can. Once you do all of this and you’re on Expert difficulty, you will get the ending achievements Avid Follower and God’s Chosen.
NEUTRAL ROUTE MISSABLES
Defeat Kazfiel in the Tokyo Tower. (Neutral/Chaos)
I’m a little dubious on this one because I’ve seen claims that Kazfiel can only be fought in the Neutral route, and isn’t available in the Chaos route. It’s possible that both Haniel and Echidna need to be dead for this battle to be available, and only the Neutral route can accomplish this. If anyone can confirm or deny this claim, send me a PM on RA. For now, I’ll just explain this achievement only in this route.
Kazfiel is a new boss introduced in the PS1 version, and his location in Tokyo Tower is also new. As I’m not familiar with this dungeon nor the boss battle, if anyone can provide me with the details, I would appreciate it.
Masakado’s Equipment
These aren’t missable, but look for them anyway since they have achievements tied to them. To find Masakado’s Sword, swim northwest from the Cathedral to find an island with a red building. Traverse through the short dungeon to find Masakado at the end, who will relinquish his sword for Main Hero to equip. As for the four pieces of Masakado Armor, swim over the mansions where the Four Heavenly Kings resided, and a piece of armor will float to the surface at those spots.
Neutral Route Bosses
I don’t think I need to cover all of the bosses in detail again when I already did so in the SNES guide. They’re not too hard as long as you look up basic strategies and use Magic Bullets + Tarakaja. Unlike the other two routes where particular bosses are weeded out depending on your alignment, here you will be genociding everything and everyone. If it’s a boss, kill it. Echidna and Haniel; the Four Heavenly Kings; Vishnu, Ravana and Indrajit in the Tokyo Government Office; the angels in the Cathedral’s upper floors; the demons in the lower floors; Law Hero, Chaos Hero and Lilith; and even Beelzebub if you didn’t do so in the Law route yet. Kill all of them. If you’re seeking to sweep out all of the boss achievements in one go, this route is perfect for you.
Get the Belial Pot from Lilith as well to make the Fire Dragon Sword when you can. Once you do all of this and you’re on Expert difficulty, you will get the ending achievements Perfectly Balanced and Those Damn Demons.
CHAOS ROUTE MISSABLES
Complete the Gaian Baptism. (Chaos)
Just like in the Law route, there is a baptism to induct Main Hero and Heroine into the Gaian faction. After talking with Law Hero in Shinagawa and Echidna in Tokyo Destiny Land, go back to Shinagawa and decline to help Law Hero. Haniel will attack you, so defeat him. Be sure your party’s alignment is pure Chaos as well. Now go to Ueno 3F and find the priest, then accept his offer to join the Gaian church. I suggest grinding Main Hero to level 65 so you can do the next achievement immediately after this one, working on your Chaos alignment grind as well.
Obtain the full set of Skyfiend Equipment. (Chaos)
Once you’re locked into the Chaos route and Main Hero is level 65, go back to the priest in Ueno and he will say that he unlocked four doors in Ueno 2F that each contain a piece of the Skyfiend Armor for Main Hero to equip. Both this and the baptism must be done anytime before triggering Flooded Tokyo’s events.
Recruit all of the 4 Kings of Tokyo. (Chaos)
Oh boy… You should be aware by now that Main Hero cannot recruit demons that are a higher level than him. Zouchouten is level 55, Komokuten is level 57, and Jikokuten is level 59. If you grinded for Main Hero to equip the Skyfiend Equipment at level 65, then recruiting these three will be easy. The problem is Bishamonten, who is level 75. Yes, the achievement is indeed checking to see that you recruit him at his manor, so demon fusions will not work. Furthermore, you cannot advance the story to reach Flooded Tokyo or else you’ll lose access to his manor for good. You could bypass this mini-quest in the SNES version’s achievement set, but no such luck here. Have fun grinding to recruit Bishamonten. The real kicker is that you can get Beelzebub who is level 99, and Main Hero doesn’t have to be at that level – you just have to talk to Louis Cypher in the Cathedral and go to the island where Beelzebub is.
Chaos Route Bosses
I don’t think I need to cover all of the bosses in detail again when I already did so in the SNES guide. They’re not too hard as long as you look up basic strategies and use Magic Bullets + Tarakaja. Of the large pool of bosses, you will be fighting the following:
- Haniel
- Vishnu
- Uriel
- Gabriel
- Raphael
- Law Hero
- Michael
You would also want to recruit Ravana in the Tokyo Government Office when you’re fighting Vishnu. Get the Belial Pot from Lilith as well to make the Fire Dragon Sword when you can. Once you do all of this and you’re on Expert difficulty, you will get the ending achievements Delightfully Devilish and Chaotic in Body and Mind.
CONCLUSION
Well, here I am again. Despite my negative attitude toward the SNES version, I have done a guide for the PS1 version. Why? The RPG Club event had this version as a choice for July 2026, so I went with it due to my experience still being rather fresh in my memory. To be honest, I wish I had played this version first due to the quality of life improvements, but that’s how it goes. I think I explained my stance with the Shin Megami Tensei series in the other guide, so I won’t bore you here. Even if it’s hard as nails and as complicated as getting a university degree, enjoy the game and have fun hunting those cheevos down.
