Royal Stone: Hirakareshi Toki no Tobira (Game Gear) - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki

Guide created by Tayadaoc

1) Synopsis

Set Difficulty 4/10
Approximate time to master 15 hours (12 hours if you skip text and rush)
Minimum numbers of playthroughs needed 1 (with save reload)
Number of missable achievements 31

2) Introduction

Royal Stone is a tactical RPG that can make you think of Fire Emblem due to the "rock-scissors-paper" system (replaced here with fire, water and wind), but it is simplified and more complex at the same time. Damage doesn't depend on the weapon used, but by the elemental affinity. Monsters defeated by your lord can join you.

3) Walkthrough

Always check your unit's HP and element. If your fire unit is attacked by a water unit, guard or run away (it has no consequence). Fire units will not be slowed by sand tiles, Water units will not be slowed by water tiles, and Wind units will not be slowed by forest tiles. Only the character defeating an enemy will receive XP. There are no MPs in this game. Spells depend on distance. Some spells can only be cast in fight, and their effect will fade when it is over. Offensive spells follow the same rock-paper-scissor logic. Press 1 (down button) to see unit stat and 2 (right button) to see their range. Press start to end your turn. Enemy units will be shown as "Shadow" until you "Scan" them or engage in fight (but you can still see the distance they cover). Scan has a range of 15 squares. After Scanning an enemy, you can know how much experience and money you get by defeating them.

4) Achievements

A Grand Start (5)
Defeat Eugene

If you don't feel confident, stay in position and let the enemy come to you. You can set units in a vertical line, 3 squares on the right from your starting spot. The first 2 enemies to reach you should be Wind, followed by 2 Water. If Eva is in their range, they will go for her. You can take down the enemy quickly if you get the first hit with a unit strong, and finish with a neutral or weak. You don't have a healer yet, so even if the enemy is weak, proceed carefully

I Fight for My Friends (10)
Defeat Edgard

You can use the same "wall" strategy here. Set units in a vertical line, and wait for enemies. 2 Fire and 1 Wind enemies will move towards you. Don't forget to check your health and heal if needed. When they are down you can start moving north. The next enemy can be pulled alone if you move slowly. For the last 2, just use the stronger element (the boss might survive with 30 hp, use Eva to finish the job)

Cat Lady (10)
Defeat Carolyn

One option to start the map is rush to the forest entrance. Enemies will be forced to come to you 1 by 1. The first 3 will be Water, the next 2 Wind. A Magi will stay behind, so check your health. You can easily reach and take him down with your Wind unit.

The Round Table (10)
Force Vatam to retreat and defeat Saker Knight's Leader

Let enemies come to you. The first will be Fire (and 1 Wind). By the time you finish them, 2 more (Water) will be north of you. You should go for the Griffons, because it will create a safe spot. When they are down, you can move to the left and have 2 units form a wall. You can keep this strategy until all enemies are down. Don't forget to heal.

Feeling Elvish (10)
Defeat Luca

After defeating the Seiter north of your starting position, use this area as a safe spot and let the enemies come to you. Keep an eye on your HP because Magi will attack from a distance. You'll have to get out of your safe spot to take care of them. This should pull the next wave. You can retreat to the safe spot or rush them. When they're down, you can pull the second Seiter if you wish, or go straight to the boss.

Azure the Blue (10)
Defeat Potov and the hapless Azure

Your starting point offers a good protection. 2 units are enough to block the path. When the first wave is cleared, you can pull the Sirens. It is possible to get them 1 at a time if you position well. You now need to pull the 4 enemies on the shore, that are all Wind-typed. Your Water units can reach them easily but would be disadvantaged in fight, so slowly make your way with the others. Let the enemies come to you, take them down 1 by 1, and make your way to the boss.

This Will be Generally Swift (10)
Defeat Savoy and General Swift

The first units coming to you will be Wind. Set your Fire units ahead, and you should have no problem. The next 3 will be Fire units. Once they are down, the boss (Wind) might move to you, while the healers stay behind. You can send your Wind units (and Magi) to get some XP, but don't stay there for too long : once the boss is defeated, reinforcements will appear on your right. They are all Wind (except 1) and will reach you very fast. 6 of them will come to you and should be weakened with your Magi. You can create a safe spot for your weaker units by moving north and placing fire & wind units in the front, to form a wall or a square. Once they are defeated, one last Wind will come to you. This boss will not wait quietly, so when you start moving right be prepared to fight one Water and one Wind enemy, as well as the Wind boss.

Round Table Rematch (10)
Defeat the Saker Knights Leader and Luminet

You won't need Scan on this map. Luminet will be the only unit to rush to you. She will cross water. Knights will come by the bridge, so I suggest using 3 units to block the path north of your start point. All enemies will slowly come to you, and if you heal after each turn, none of your units should die.

Vatam the Devine (10)
Defeat Vatam

Stay in the start area. Use the cliff to your right as protection, and form a wall with your stronger units (or go to the bridge on your left to force 1v1 encounters). Let enemies come to you. Do not hesitate to heal. The Magi will hit you real hard.

Getting Fristey (10)
Defeat Fristey

For this map, you should not take any Wind unit. 8 Fire units are coming for you, so place Water and Fire units to make a wall. When they are defeated, move slowly to the north and 2 Magi will come to you. Your Fire units can take care of them. With only the boss and a healer left, you should finish this round quite fast.

Blairly Listening (10)
Defeat Dubinin and General Blair

Almost all of the enemies are Fire, so your Wind units have another day off. Nowhere to hide, so let enemies come to you. the ones coming from the lake will be the only 2 water enemies of this round. You can try to fight fire with fire, or use water on fire and then have your earth units on the water ones. Make good use of your Magi to weaken the enemy before they can attack you. After taking care of the 4 closest units, 2 more will be in range. With all Water units down, you can now create a wall with your own Water units and slowly burn the enemy. To reach the last 3 enemies, you should use the lake. Reinforcements will come on the left and on the right, but will be greatly slowed by water. Your Magi and Water units will shine here (as long as the Magi are not in melee range). The boss will be the last to come, but if you slowly moved while taking care of enemies, it should not be a problem.

Illuminate the Way (10)
Defeat Luminet

If you want to clear this map fast, go north and have a strong character block the way. Luminet will be the first to reach you. If you want to get experience from all the enemies, you need to block both sides, using your Fire units (since they won't suffer movement loss from sand). Have a fire unit that can Block on the side of Luminet. From there, proceed as usual, weakening with Magi and healing every turn.

Duar Die (10)
Defeat Duar

The first enemy units will take a while to reach you, so if you're trying to get all level 16, place 2 Wind units a bit ahead to pull the Siren. Use Magi if needed to weaken her, and finish with Eva. 2 Wind units will reach you, followed by a Magi. Once they are down, you can pull the next 2 by setting 2 units above the south lake (make a Fire wall). When those 2 Wind units are down, it is time to pull the Griffon. Check its range and place a Fire unit at the end of it. You need to be quick, because an enemy Magi will come to you. Remember to finish the Griffon with Eva if you want to get all level 16. If the Magi is close enough, use your own Magi to take it down (Tor&Papure finished it in 1 turn with Flash). Time to go for the Seiter. You're not recruiting this one so choose the tactic you prefer. Pulling it, or setting your Magi on the side of the cliff (the mob cannot jump above the cliff). Once you get out of the forest, the boss and bishop will come to you. Use a Fire unit to block the path (the boss uses a Seiter and Griffon) and use magic if needed to take them down.

Eye Spy (10)
Defeat Boris and Vatam

You should take the Griffon and Siren that you just recruited if you want to get all units to level 16. 2 units are enough to block enemies. Fire should reach you first, followed by Wind and Water. Once they are all down, reinforcements will come from the right side of the screen. The first wave is easy, but Evokers will come to ruin your fun. Do not hesitate to Block or Flee, and heal often. If you also face a Wizard at the same time, take care of him with a strong physical attacker. Enemy Wizards only have the stronger version of spells, so their range is limited to 3 squares. The next 2 enemies will not come, so you have to move to the last portion of the road before the city. They will hit quite hard so heal every turn. When you reach the city, the 2 Bishops will come to you. They will put you to sleep, but will only deal 40 damage. The boss will not wait quietly. If you moved a bit too much to the right, he'll come to you while you deal with Bishops. A Wind unit placed between the trees can give him a warm welcome. If you took the Griffon, 2 turns are enough to finish the boss.

Back For More (10)
Defeat Boris and Vatam

This is your only chance to recruit a Golem. Fortunately, they are the first monsters you encounter, so if want one but cannot get it, reset. They will not move until you reach the end of the bridge, so plan accordingly. Time for a long walk. The enemies on the left are 3 Wizards stuck on a cliff, with higher spells. You can use your low level spells to take them down if you don't want to take damage, use high level spells to take them down in 2 turns, or just ignore them and rush if you don't care about XP. For information, they give a total of 81 XP. Note that they might get heals. There are 2 Bishops on the north island that you cannot reach. No matter what you decide, enemies will start coming to you before you can reach the final bridge. Check your HP and heal often. The boss will not move at all. Taking down his HP with magic (and finish with the character you want to feed XP to)

A Hero's Journey (25)
Defeat Dinon

Use the bridge to pull enemies. When enough are defeated (or if you go north too much) the boss will come to you. If Eva is in range, she will be the target.

These can all be obtained in 1 play, if you level evenly and carefully your party. You will only have to reload your save on the last Round. There is a total of 313 experience points that you can earn on the last map, not counting the boss. You can only have 9 units on a map, and Eva is forced.
For information, here is the XP needed to hit level 16 for each class

  • Lord : 513
  • Fighter : 351
  • Ranger, Knight, Soldier : 426
  • Healer : 255
  • Bishop : 285
  • Magi : 392
  • Wizard, Evoker : 457
  • Monsters : 675

Using a class promote item will give you the lowest amount of XP to keep your level (if your unit is a healer lv15 with 254/255 XP, using the item will make it bishop 259/285 XP). To maximize your XP on healer & magi, wait as much as possible before you promote them.

Learn spells

There are 4 magic shops in the game, after Rounds 3, 6, 10, 14.
Warning for advanced classes : it is possible to use a "promote item" on a character that doesn't need it : the item will then be lost.

Eva the Magic Caster (5)
Learn all spells available to Eva
Pauline's Healing Touch (5)
Learn all Healer spells available to Pauline

These 2 can be obtained after Round 3. They are missed if you start Round 15.

Say Your Prayers to Pauline (5)
Learn all Bishop spells available to Pauline
Bishop Man (10)
Learn all Bishop spells available to Perlis

The earliest point for these is after Round 6. They are missed if you did not buy a "Bible" in the mystery shop (10 C), and if you did not use the item to promote the unit before Round 15. They are missed if you start Round 15.

Wizardry (10)
Learn all Wizard spells available to Papure
Plague Wizard (10)
Learn all Wizard spells available to Tor

Missed if you did not buy a "Grimoire" (20 C) in a mystery shop, if you did not use on the character, or if you start Round 15.
Also Missed if you used a "Contract" (and saved after)

How to Train Your Monster (10)
Assign four monsters to Papure as an Evoker
Flying Monsters (10)
Assign four monsters to Tor as an Evoker

Buy a "Contract"(6660 C) in the mystery shop after Round 11.
Missed if you already used a "Grimoire" or if you did not recruit enough monsters

Faster than Eva (10)
Raise Eva's speed to the maximum

The only way to raise speed is by buying an item in mystery shop after Round 5 (5550 C). You will need 22200, so save money by skipping the first armor upgrades and spells (but don't skip Heal for Eva). If you want to play safe, do not buy anything until you reach the mystery shop. Make sure you defeat all the enemies on each map. If you still don't have enough money, remove the equipped items and sell them. You can later reload you save.

Beast Master (25)
Capture two of each kind of monster in rounds 4 to 6

The achievement can be done in several sessions. Reload if you did not capture both monsters in each level.
For Round 4, I advise to let the enemies come to you before you attempt to capture the Griffons. Remember, only Eva can capture (by defeating). When the path is clear, you can carefully make your way to them.
Round 5 : pull the Seiter by moving your water units to the north and keep Eva behind them. Use your water units to weaken the monster and let Eva get the kill. Wait until all enemies (minus boss) are defeated to get close to the 2nd Seiter
Round 6 : it seems you have a better chance of recruiting the Sirens during enemy turn.

Keep the Party Together (25)
Reach the last stage without losing any core party members, excluding hires

Death is permanent in this game. Save your game after every chapter, and reset if you lost any of those units : Vaslery, Torris, Horai, Pauline, Nico, Perlis, Papure, Tor.
