Pajama Sam: Don't Fear the Dark (Wii) - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki

Set developed by LilCutieSophia, guide written by benit149

Hello, and welcome to my guide for Pajama Sam: Don’t Fear the Dark, a point-and-click adventure title for the Wii that is a port of the 1996 Windows version Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It’s Dark Outside. You play as a boy named Sam, who idolizes the superhero Pajama Man that fights against the villain Darkness, but Sam is terrified of the dark himself. To overcome his fear, he dons a superhero persona of his own named Pajama Sam and winds up falling through a portal inside his closet into the Land of Darkness. He thus embarks on an adventure to confront Darkness and return home.

This may be geared towards children, but some of the items you need to find can be a bit vague, not to mention that they can be randomized, meaning that each playthrough may wind up being different from the previous. There are also missable events you need to discover before making progress with the story, since you can’t backtrack to previous screens once you progress through certain points in the game. I’ll be covering all of the randomized and hidden items per scene so you can find everything before progressing the plot.

There will be some spoilers involved, so if you wish to enjoy the story first, please stop reading here.

One achievement you will be working towards for the entire game is Cleaning Up the Land of Darkness, which is to collect 20 socks (or 10 pairs of socks) throughout the various areas. I’ll highlight where to find the socks in each section, and include a (#/20) notation. When you find a sock, place it in the laundry basket, being sure to match the correct pairs of socks together, then select the purple arrow in the upper left corner to return to the game.

Sam’s Bedroom

The first sock is found on the rug just to the left of Sam (1/20). If you’re in the middle of finding the hidden objects, then pick up the sock, the counter will be reset. Either find all of the hidden objects first, or get the sock before searching.

Don’t touch the comic book on the bed or else you’ll be forced to watch the unskippable cutscene of Sam reading the comic again. Kind of annoying, if I’m being honest.

Make sure you find all of the optional items before finding these three story items.

  • FLASHLIGHT: either one of the drawers in the nightstand
  • MASK: under the rug, or under the shawl on the coat rack
  • LUNCH BOX: in the trash bin, or under the bed

The optional items are as follows, starting from the ceiling and going clockwise.

  1. Toy airplane hanging from the ceiling
  2. Baseball cap next to the airplane
  3. Baseball glove next to the cap
  4. Lamp on nightstand
  5. Pajama Man poster over the bed
  6. Touch the calendar twice to cause two separate animations to occur
  7. Ceiling light next to the street sign
  8. Street sign over the closet door
  9. Doodle next to the street sign
  10. Books next to the doodle
  11. Toy truck on the ground
  12. Upper left bed post orb
  13. Lower left bed post orb
  14. Upper right bed post orb
  15. Lower right bed post orb
  16. White paper nailed on door
  17. Electric outlet behind the trash can

Once you’re all set, select the closet door to be taken to the next scene.

Land of Darkness pt. 1

There’s nothing of note in the first screen, so move on to the second screen. You’ll find a wooden plank in the river, but Sam can’t reach it for now. Move on to the third screen, and he’ll be captured in a rope trap and his items confiscated. Touch the rope that he’s dangling from to free him, and the blue tree will say that he can borrow the rope. Advance to the fourth screen, and the next sock will be found in the tree on the far upper right (2/20).

You’re at a four-way intersection now, so it’s time to do some preliminary exploring. Go forward to Darkness’ House and find a tiny sock at the base of the tree (3/20). Don’t be misled by its purple color – it doesn’t match the purple sock found in Sam’s room. Have Sam hop into the purple basket, then interact with the three rocks nearby for him to throw them into the other basket to hoist him into the house above.

Darkness’ House pt. 1

You’ll be brought into a room with a stairwell and two doors. Take the left door into the kitchen. Here's where a missable achievement will occur, I'll Take It Right Up... to Darkness, Where He'll Gobble It Up. Click the cutting board to hear its jingle, then the cooking pot afterward for the dumbwaiter to sing. The other various cooking implements have their own jingles if you want to listen to them. Now click the green button to make the dumbwaiter head down, then leave the kitchen.

Back in the lobby, head into the right door this time into the living room. Make the furniture stop dancing by clicking on it. Another easy missable achievement is found here, Break It Down, just by clicking the furniture implements several times. There’s nothing else to do here, so return to the lobby and head upstairs.

You’ll be in a room with a pair of closed elevator doors and a spiral staircase. Click the elevator doors to be sent into the Brain Tickler sequence, a quiz minigame where you answer some incredibly simple questions. What categories are presented to the player will be randomized, so I won’t be providing any solutions to the questions. If you’re stuck on anything, Google is your friend. The question regarding the Land of Darkness category is fixed though, and you can’t answer it because you haven’t been there yet. Regardless of how you answer, Blink and Wink will allow Sam to take a break and return once he finds the answer. You just want to make progress with this for now.

Go up the spiral staircase now. This screen has an easily visible sock on the vines at the bottom (4/20). A missable achievement is found here, Putt-Putt Enters the Darkness, by clicking the smiling car-like toy at the far upper right. Nothing else to do here, so go back downstairs to the lobby and click the rope to exit the house.

Land of Darkness pt. 2

This is going to be the largest exploration segment, so pay attention. Return to the four-way intersection and head left into the mine. Find a blue sock hanging on the wooden post (5/20), then talk to the mine cart King to learn about his conundrum before returning to the intersection outside.

Head right to the boat dock and collect the sock hanging from the tree branch (6/20). Speak to Otto the grounded boat, then try to cross the river only to find out that Otto is afraid of water. Go back to the intersection and return to the screen with the wooden plank floating in the water. Select the board with the rope to retrieve the wood, but you’ll lose the rope. Return to the boat dock and present Otto with the wooden board. Otto will overcome his fear and allow Sam to ride him on the river.

You’ll be on an overhead screen with four directions to go. Choose the upper right path, then after disembarking, find a very small sock on the tree branch in the upper left (7/20). Continue onward to the next screen and pick up another sock (8/20). Move on to the next screen and try to pass through, but the snobby trees won’t allow it. Go back to the area with Otto and click on the hollow log twice. Sam will wear it on his head, so return back to the trees and they will be fooled by his disguise.

Now in the room with the vegetable patch, pick up the sock in the upper left vines (9/20). Talk to the carrot with the Pajama Sam mask, and he’ll ask Sam to rescue the other carrots from Darkness’ refrigerator. Carrot will come along as an item, so use your tree disguise and return to the four-way river with Otto. This time take the upper left route. You can try to speak to the bridge, but he won’t let Sam through without paying the toll. There is a well-hidden blue sock here that is resting atop the larger rock on the bottom left of the screen (10/20). Click on the shack in the upper left distance for Sam to sail to it in the next screen. Take the oil can from the tree stump. You can look through the window to discover the flashlight inside, but Sam can’t enter since he’s unable to open the door.

Continue forward along the river to descend some waterfalls until Sam and Otto reach a cavern. The lunch box is found here, but Sam can’t reach it. Continue left two areas, and you’ll find a purple sock near the purple crystals around the center of the screen (11/20). Click on the hole in the ceiling for Otto to ride the geyser. There’s another sock in the upper right area (12/20). Go left, and you’re back at the four-way river intersection. Disembark Otto and head for the mines next.

With the oil can on hand, Sam can de-rust King’s wheels, allowing for exploration of the mines. Head right two screens, then pick up a small sock dangling from the underside of the tracks (13/20). Examine the water meter and write down the number you see – it’s randomized in every playthrough. Go left and snag the pickaxe on the left side of the screen. Head left again and enter the cavern with the GOLD sign over it. This part requires you to be quick, because on the screen with the splitting tracks, you need to click on the upper left path for King to go that way. If he goes straight, you’ll wind up back at the start.

Sam and King will eventually end up next to a gold vein. A purple sock is found on the right side of the screen (14/20). Use the pickaxe to mine a nugget, then take the lower right path. Go down the lower left path to return to the very first screen of the mines. After all of that, you can return to Darkness’ House.

Before doing so, go through the mine course again and go straight (upper right), upper right again, and left as quickly as you can to wind up in a room with an arcade machine. This is the Nuggets minigame, which is basically the classic Snake game. To get the Mining Deep Down achievement, you need to clear 15 levels of this minigame, which gets progressively harder. It isn’t helped with the wonky Wii controls, meaning you’ll need to set your controller up to let you play this as efficiently as you can. For the best results, assign the directional buttons to your keyboard. You also want to set your emulator’s texture cache to safe, by going into Graphics -> Hacks -> Texture Cache and decreasing the bar from Fast to Safe. This prevents the game from severely stuttering, allowing you to see where you’re going.

Darkness’ House pt. 2

Head all the way back to the kitchen. Don’t worry, you don’t have to do the whole rigamarole with the basket and stones again – the game will do it automatically. Use Carrot as an item to interact with the refrigerator, and Sam will get his mask back. Return to the lobby and go up the stairs to speak with Blink and Wink the elevator doors. Now that you have the number from the water meter, you can answer their final quiz question.

Enter this new room, then click on the doorknob to the room labeled 3G. It will fall off, and Sam will take it as an item. Go through the blue door on the left (it looks like it says 66, but it’s actually a beamed quaver). There’s a tricky sock to find, tucked in one of the organ’s pipes on the upper left (15/20). You’re done in the house for now, so return outside.

Land of Darkness pt. 3

With the gold nugget and doorknob on hand, further progress can be made on the river. Return to Otto and head along the upper left route to the bridge. Give the gold nugget to the bridge entrance to be allowed through, then take the new path. Speak to the toaster to play Cheese and Crackers, which is just Tic-Tac-Toe. The AI will be incredibly dumb and give you the win here. This is where you want to play the largest grid and win to get the It’s Nacho Cheese achievement.

Once you’re done here, return to Otto and go to the shack. Use the doorknob on the door, but Sam still can’t open it because the hinges are rusty. Use the oil on the door, and it will finally open. Enter the shack, then step on the barrel for Sam to retrieve his flashlight. All that’s left is the lunch box now. Head back to the four-way river intersection and backtrack to the elevator doors in Darkness’ House.

Darkness’ House pt. 3

Go through the elevator doors into the topsy-turvy room, then head right. There’s a sock on the ceiling (16/20). Go through the pinkish door to end up in the study. There’s another sock under the armchair (17/20). Read the open book with the bookmark to get a clue – the color that’s specified is randomized. Click on the books on the bookshelf that correspond with your chosen color, then click the bookshelf again to be swung around into the secret stairwell.

Go downstairs into the screen with two doors, and find a sock on the upper right corner (18/20). Go through the door that Sam is standing in front of to enter the lab, and pilfer another sock on the upper right (19/20). To get the missable achievement You’re a Wizard, Sam!, approach the desk and mix a concoction of three colors five different times without exiting the desk screen. Once you’re satisfied, interact with the dumbwaiter you had sent down much earlier in the game and ride it back up to the kitchen. It’s a one-way trip, so press the down button again to send it back to the lab.

Why did you want to do this? Recall the magnet hanging from the rotating bookshelf. You needed a way to get back up to the study to retrieve it. Be sure not to interact with the bookshelf itself by mistake. Once you have the magnet, go into the secret stairwell and approach the red door this time. Push the obvious button next to it to get the Don’t Press the Button achievement. Go through into the mine and King will pick Sam up, allowing you to return to the mine entrance and thus outside.

I think you know what to do next. Return to Otto and ride him down the falls to the cavern where the lunch box is. Use the magnet on the lunch box to retrieve it, then go back up the geyser and backtrack to the elevator room in the house. This time, take the spiral staircase up. Once you enter Darkness’ room, you cannot leave, so be absolutely sure to do everything else before entering. You should have 19/20 socks, played the Nuggets minigame to 15 levels, and otherwise do the remaining missables.

Once you’re ready, enter Darkness’ bedroom. The final sock is found tucked in the dark leaves on the lower left (20/20). You can’t open the lock to the closet without the key, so interact with the cupboard next to the closet to have a pile of keys pour out. Open the same cupboard a second time to get the real key. After Sam unlocks the padlock, enter the closet, and you’re done. Watch the cutscenes and enjoy the ending.

CONCLUSION

Not much to say here, other than it’s a fairly simple game for the likes of Wii Rollout and Peak Streak. It’s not exactly a five-minute game, but give it an hour or two and you’ll have a simple mastery on your hands. Nuggets will cause you the most problems if you don’t have the proper settings, but some digging around in the comments should help you out. I hope this guide helps you out, and good luck in the events.
