The Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean is a 1999 role-playing video game developed by Nihon Falcom. It is the fifth game in The Legend of Heroes series, and the third and final title in the Gagharv Trilogy. It was originally released for Windows and was remade for the PlayStation Portable in 2006.
The game takes place in Weltluna, the third realm in Gagharv, seven years after A Tear of Vermillion and forty-nine years before Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch. It centers around Forte, Una and McBain and their quest in seeking Leone's Resonance Stones.
This achievement set is created by developer ladynadiad, who has done an excellent job covering everything the game has to offer. There are a lot of missable achievements in this set that are chronologically ordered on the game page, but I wanted to emphasise on them further by introducing a completely spoiler-free guide. This guide hides all the story achievements in a toggle with the amount described, making it so that this guide can be approached without the worry that you will be spoiling yourself. For example, if the toggle says 2 achievements, then everything between this toggle and the next toggle can be gained in-between that time. If you are a veteran of the series however, you are most likely familiar with how this game handles missables: talking to every NPC after every major happening in the story. By following this approach, most if not all achievements shouldn't be a problem for you!
Do note: you need a save file of both A Tear of Vermillion and Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch to master this game. They do NOT need to be a complete save file.
Step 1: Walkthrough per Chapter
Unlike previous guides where I split up the steps per chapter, I have opted to put them all together in one step due to how big this set is in comparison to the other two. However, everything is still split up per chapter within this step to give you an idea of how many missables there are per chapter, as well as hiding the story achievements so you can still approach this guide without spoiling yourself. History progress, books, and Orbs of Ocean carries over to NG+, so if you want to play this game casually first, you can get everything you missed on a second playthrough... except for:
While every non-progression achievement is missable, you must absolutely make sure to get the following two achievements during your first playthrough. You can NOT get these on a second playthrough.
- Went Too Easy on Her - Near the end of Chapter 1, before gaining access to the lower half of the quarry. Defeat the boss giving you access with Una.
- Dealing with the Cache of Wood - During Chapter 6, while you are travelling to Grabadel, instead go to a cave that is located on the south-east of the route. Do NOT go to Grabadel first, at least not until you are asked to go back to the cave.
Books per chapter are detailed in section 4.
Step 2: Chests, Orbs, Sonomemories, and NG+
This step covers all locations, orbs, and sonomemories found per location. As long as you get every achievement in this section, you will get the full Orb of Ocean list completed no problem. As mentioned however, NG+ is required for a few Orbs and Sonomemories, so you cannot avoid a second playthrough.
A few additional notes:
- Check every chest again, as well as the back of every chest. While my guide is 99% accurate as to where the item locations are, you can avoid looking at the guide altogether by triple-checking every chest. It's not uncommon for a chest to have three items: opening it the first time, checking it again, and checking the back. Just make sure that you always do this.
- That said... some chests are hidden very nastily, like not being easily spottable or hidden through a non-visible passage. You can trust my guide on those but if you want to try and find everything yourself, hug every wall in every cave and on every route, because you'll undeniably find some.
- Pay very close attention to the Sonomemories on a New Game+ playthrough, as well as on your first playthrough beyond Chapter 7. On a New Game+ playthrough, the final Sonomemory is locked behind getting ALL other Sonomemories, and you can get this final one in Chapter 7 of New Game+. If you do not have all the sonomemories found through the regular story (not including special scenario), you will have to replay the entire game again.
All of these achievements require a save file from both The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion, and The Legend of Heroes II: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch. Once you have done that, all achievements can be gotten throughout the game, with more unlocking depending on progress made in Song of the Ocean.
However, do be wary specifically of Friends from Tirasweel and Weltluna, as this accounts for Song of the Ocean characters as well. Every time you get a new character, you must go to a tuning fork to register them. For more information, see the achievement in the guide.
Like the previous two games, there are two series of books to collect--and there are a lot of them too. You can safely do this across two playthroughs, but allow me to detail every book's location down below for convenience. Having every book of a series is mandatory to get a weapon in the final chapter; miss one, and you won't get that weapon until you get the missing book on another playthrough.

A Magical Map (5) Open the chest to find a magic map

The Power of Purification (5) Obtain the Resonance Stone 'Purification'
Story-related, cannot be missed. Triggers after opening the chest behind the wall with the harp in the underground waterway.
No More Poison Leaks (5) With the help of your newly found Resonance Stone, rid the underground waterway of Poison Bugs and prevent further poison leaks in Cranka.
Story-related, cannot be missed. Triggers after defeating the Poison Bugs in the underground waterway.
The McBain Company Departs on a Journey (10) After the recital, the newly formed McBain Company performs their first piece for the villages as they depart.

Happy Travels (3) Give a performance to Dorso in Cranka before leaving on the ferry and gain the score Happy Traveler.

For the same girl you played trumpet earlier, this time refuse to play the trumpet so you get a prompt to play the kithara instead. Do so, and receive the Dotted Ribbon. While it is technically doable before the recital, you need to do this after because it will void the achievement otherwise.
Encore! (3) Play any song for Elder Grart and take him up on his offer to peruse his books about the Water Tribe before leaving Pinzel.

Forte and His Well Mannered Fans (5) After obtaining a passport and both the visas, Forte has an interesting performance for his fans before departing.
Story-related, cannot be missed. Try to leave Pinzel, after which a cutscene will trigger as well as this achievement afterwards.
Blue Knight (3) Perform in the bar in Fargot and receive Doll Knight 2 as a tip.

The True Start of their Trip (5) Board My Stomach and depart for the end of the prologue.

On the Way Back from the Capital (3) Purchase Doll Knight 3 in Trim.

Dissonant Water Melody (5) Find the Resonance Stone of Water
Story-related, cannot be missed. Go deeper into the Aquaharp Cave and solve the puzzle to obtain this Resonance Stone.
Taking out Pigeons and Roses (3) After rescuing the hostages, get Fred Book 3 from Anessa.

The Secret Weapon (5) Altos teams up with the party and they come up with an idea to deal with the Swing Gang.
Story-related, cannot be missed. Triggers after the cutscene with Altos arriving at the quarry.
Two Resonance Stones for Dealing With One Gang (10) Defeat the Swing Gang, obtain the Resonance Stones of 'Earth' and 'Lullaby' and complete chapter 1.

Story-related, cannot be missed. After witnessing the mysterious girl sing, walk to her location to trigger the achievement.
The Blazing Devil (3) Play a lullaby and get Doll Knight 12 as a reward.

There are a total of 17 events for this achievement, including three chests that have the Orbs of Ocean. One of them is north of the town hall, one on the roof of the theater, and one is on the second floor of the tavern. All other events are related to talking to people, so make sure you have talked to every NPC in town including in the tavern, which needs to be done before entering the theater.
Why Didn't We Think of That? (5) Receive an Iron Poker to deal with the lightning in the swamp.
Story-related, cannot be missed. After returning from the swamp, head to the town hall first and then be redirected to the bakery where you will get an Iron Poker.
Memories of the Past (5) While Altos is in the party, speak with Enora and Nor to learn about the past.

Mission Accepted (5) Learn the truth of the Resonance Stones from Chief Oratorio, accept his request to collect all of them and gain the stone of Force.

In the middle of Chituna Road is a small seemingly dead end alclove. Stand near the wall here to use Rock Crash and be prepared for a fight. Afterwards, open all chests (check the open one again), then get behind the chest to check for additional treasure.

- Restore Snuff - One screen east of the camp, go down at the first opportunity to find this chest.

Warping For Treasure (10) Obtain all the treasure in the Grass Barrier.
- Emerald - On the first screen of the Grass Barrier on the left side.

- Sleep Bow - When at the warping section, choose the blue colour (north) three times to end up at a place with two chests. The left one has the Sleep Bow.

- Ruby - On the stairs room right before getting to the bottom to the lake cave, hug the right wall and you will get to a hidden room with two chests. The left chest has this item.
- Energy Ring - To the right of Chest 2.
- Orb of Ocean 31 - When going to Selbert, you will see this chest on the first screen.
- Orb of Ocean 97 - Check the chest on the left side of Selbert.

Sonomemories are sometimes given out by defeating bosses, as well as found in chests both during the first playthrough and New Game+. Some Sonomemories also will not be available until you have a specific amount, with the final one needing a total of 30. Due to that, it is absolutely essential that you get all Sonomemories up till Chapter 4 NG+ before Chapter 7 on a New Game+ run.
Chapter 3
- Sonomemory 23 - Dropped by the boss at the Lightning Shrine.
- Sonomemory 24 - Check the chest with the Resonance Stone again when travelling to Shulf.
Chapter 5
- Sonomemory 30 - Dropped by the boss at the end of the chapter.

- Sonomemory 2 - Check the same chest as Sonomemory 1 again.
- Sonomemory 3 - Your pet will randomly find this while on the second floor of the Cathedral. Make sure it's fed well, and watch out for when it enthusiastically approaches you (marked by the yellow attention signs coming from the pet).
- Sonomemory 4 - In a chest on the second floor of Andela Castle. To gain access to the second floor, have either Jurio or Chris in your party.
- Sonomemory 5 - Check the same chest as Sonomemory 4 again.
- Sonomemory 7 - Found in a treasure chest during the "Idun's Shrine" scenario.
- Sonomemory 8 - Andela Castle chest near the staircase.
- Sonomemory 12 - Cathedral Underground chest.

You gain access to these scenarios after transfering data from The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion, with each unlocking at a specific level. You can do these at any point you want, and with the final one being quite literally the final boss from AToV, waiting until the end of the game with a maxed-out party is certainly something I can recommend.
Friends from Tirasweel and Weltluna (10) Unlock all characters from Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch and Song of the Ocean for use in the Special Scenario
Every Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch character unlocks automatically through story progression, with more added to the castle after every two chapters. However, this also includes the Song of the Ocean characters, and that's the catch where you need to absolutely make sure to go to a tuning fork whenever a new character joins your team. This is especially relevant for the following characters:
- Slade/Fred: These two are registered as separate characters, and therefore you need to go to a tuning fork during Chapter 2 on Ryutom island, and Chapter 4 any time before going to Ened.
- Palman: For Palman, you'll have two opportunities: during Chapter 3 near the swamp, and Chapter 5 at the... other swamp. Both have fairly short windows, so make sure to do this whenever you got a chance.
- Duorl: Duorl has an extremely short window of being added to your party through the tuning fork, and that is between rescuing him at the cave and going back to Grabadel Castle. Make sure that once he is in your party, to go west to the tuning fork near the checkpoint. This is your only chance.
Friends from El Phildin (10) Unlock all characters from A Tear of Vermillion for use in the Special Scenario.
This is an achievement that should be pretty straightforward: finish every extra scenario, unlock more characters, talk to them in the cathedral, and that's all you need to do. However, there is one anomaly: Rutice.
Rutice is a bit bugged, and the exact conditions to unlock her are a bit vague, but one that has consistently worked for me is to clear your party and then talk to every character in the Special Scenario. Every single one; just say no when they ask to join you as that's not necessary. Then, do the Extra Scenario "Sealed Land" again, and she should pop up in a small patch of grass after going through the Catherdral underground.

Memories of El Phildin (25) [Special Scenario] Collect all 121 Vermilion Orbs. Note: Vermilion Orb 47 doesn't exist so you need to collect up to Vermilion Orb 122.
To unlock Moonlight/Vermillion Orbs, you need to clear an Extra Scenario with each of the Moonlight/Vermillion characters in your party, multiple times as the Orb droprate is random. At the end of a scenario, these Orbs unlock, and it will tell you whenever you got each orb of a character.
The recommended strategy is to just repeat the first Extra Scenario repeatedly, and have only Forte in your party with 5 different characters as he alone will be more than enough to clear it. Keep repeating this over, switching our characters until the game says you got all their orbs, and eventually you will get all orbs without problem.
Obviously, having all characters is a requirement for these achievements.
