Grandia (PlayStation) - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki
This guide covers all missable achievements in the set for Grandia (PlayStation). Many are only missable in the sense that you can't backtrack once you travel to a new continent, but others require multiple specifically-timed actions that are easy to overlook (ie, speaking with a certain NPC in between certain events).
This guide is not a step-by-step walkthrough for the whole game, but there are plenty of other resources for that, such as GameFAQs and nJOY.
This guide was put together by rozhestvensky. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
Some party members will leave during the course of the story - you'll need to unlock all of their skills and/or spells before that happens.
Skill and Spell tables are sourced from nJOY, reproduced below. To learn a spell, simply reach all of the required element levels shown in the table by casting spells of that element. Learning skills is done the same way, though weapon levels are also in scope.
To "maximize" a skill (raising it to five stars), continue to increase the same weapon and element levels used to learn that skill. For a skill requiring only a single weapon or element type, gaining three additional levels in that type will grant an additional star (so 15 extra levels will maximize it). For a skill requiring multiple types, you'll get a star for three levels times the number of types used (so 30 levels to maximize a skill using two types, 45 levels for three, etc). Those levels can come from any type - for example, you should be able to maximize Sue's "Rah-Rah!" Cheer skill at level 31 Blunt and level 1 Bow.
A character can learn Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth spells only after trading a Mana Egg for that element. You will need fourteen Mana Eggs to complete all Spell lists, and eighteen can be found during the journey. Because your ability to backtrack is limited, you may lock yourself out of the skill and spell achievements by not finding enough Mana Eggs. Their locations:
Location | Specific Area |
---|---|
Ghost Ship | Captain's Cabin (dropped by the Squid King boss) |
Merrill Road | |
New Parm Church | Underground Passage |

Sue will leave the party permanently after the events at Mysterious Vanishing Hill, though she'll be temporarily unavailable during a few stretches at the start of the Lost World region. You'll need to use Mana Eggs to give her all four elements, so focus on that early (even if it feels like a waste).

Pen Pals pre-requisite: Visit House 2 and speak with "Francois" upstairs until he hands over the Letter to Clara for delivery.
Visit Justin's room on the highest floor of Lilly's Seagull Restaurant (you'll be here automatically a few times). Search the room to find a First-Aid Kit (in the chest), 100 G (amongst the scrolls/maps standing upright in a pot), and a Poison Antidote (under Justin's pillow, apparently?).
Adventurer's Starting Set (1) Take all items from Justin's room
After the first night, before visiting the curator, speak to Lilly in the restaurant's kitchen. Tell her "Mom, you really look beautiful today" three times to receive 1 G.
Silver Tongued (1) Flatter Lilly to get whopping allowance of 1 GP
Also before visiting the curator, speak with Marie in front of Parm Station. Agree to find her pin, then go east to The Baal Museum (her mother is walking around in front). Tap X as you walk around the east side of the museum's entrance to find the pin. Speak with Marie to return the pin, then speak with her mother to be rewarded with a Wound Salve.
Marie's Pin (2) Return Marie's lost pin to her and receive reward from her mother
There are six treasures to find on Marna Road.
Treasure Hunter I: Marna Road (3) Collect all treasure on Marna Road
There are sixteen treasures to find in the Sult Ruins.
Treasure Hunter II: Sult Ruins (5) Collect all treasure in Sult Ruins
There are twenty-seven treasures to find in the Leck Mines. The last item (a Seed of Defense) can only be collected after defeating the boss - be sure to pick it up from the platform before leaving.
Treasure Hunter III: Leck Mines (10) Collect all treasure in Leck Mines
Visit the Inventor's House and speak to him to receive a Coal Candy.
Original Masterpiece (1) Obtain Coal Candy from Inventor
There are a few very missable achievements in this area. As soon as Justin and Sue become apprentice sailors and wake up the following morning:
Walk up into Steamer Passageway 2 and speak to the first sailor you see. Prove that you know the rules of the sea by responding:
- Maybe "Don't be a stowaway," or
- "Don't spill blood in a fight," or
- How about "Don't dirty the sea."
You'll receive a Beef Jerky as a reward.
The Rules of the Sea (1) Complete sailor's quiz to earn Beef Jerky
Important
Stowaway's Reward pre-requisite: Go down to the Steamer 2nd Class Cabin and speak with the old man in front of the Stashing Place. Keep speaking with him until his dialog repeats - you'll find out that he's a stowaway.
Important
A Parting Gift pre-requisite: Visit Steamer 1st Class Cabin B and speak with the husband and wife. Keep talking with them until their dialog repeats - they'll tell you that Puffy reminds them of their son.
Visit Steamer 1st Class Cabin A and speak with the woman inside. She'll ask you to clean the bathtub - just walk over to it and hit X to inspect it, then speak with the woman again for a reward.
Cleaning Duty (1) Clean "filthy" bathtub and receive reward of 25 GP
Visit the Steamer Lounge and speak with the man on the far left. He'll offer to bet 100 G on a coin flip. Whether you win or lose, you'll unlock this achievement.
Heads or Tails (1) Play a game of chance with gambler
Still in the Lounge, speak with the woman in front of the yellow couch. She'll ask if she has too many freckles. You have one chance to get this right, so be sure to respond "Not to worry! Just a couple!". Speak with her a second time to receive the Chocolate.
Just the Right Amount of Freckles (1) Reassure lady worried about freckles and receive reward from her
Now you can head up to the deck and begin your apprentice sailor duties. Speak with the sailor in the middle of the deck to begin the swabbing minigame. You'll need to complete it in under 26 seconds for this achievement, which isn't too difficult. Hold down X until the Power meter fills up to 90+%, then tap X to keep it in that range. As long as you don't overload the Power meter and have to start over, you should make it in time.
Master Deck-Swabber (5) Finish deck swabbing minigame in under 0:26.00 to earn 25 GP
There are sixteen treasures to collect on the Ghost Ship.
Treasure Hunter IV: Ghost Ship (10) Collect all treasure on Ghost Ship
Important
It's not part of the Treasure Hunter IV achievement, but there is a Mana Egg to be won from the Squid King boss. Just make sure that you have an open inventory slot to receive it.
Important
A Parting Gift pre-requisite: After you clear the Ghost Ship, but before you rest once more in the Crew's Quarters, revisit Steamer 1st Class Cabin B and speak with the husband and wife again. Keep talking with them to until their dialog repeats - they'll give Puffy all the credit for taking care of the Ghost Ship.
After you rest up, return to the deck to see the Steamer approach New Parm. Before telling Feena that you're ready to go ashore, return once more to Steamer 1st Class Cabin B to speak with the husband and wife. If you had spoken to them enough previously, they'll give Puffy 300 G.
A Parting Gift (2) Receive 300 GP from couple in Cabin B
Assuming you spoke with the stowaway while on the Steamer, you can find him in a barrel just to the west after disembarking. He'll give you the Golden Potion to keep quiet.
Stowaway's Reward (2) Receive Golden Potion from stowaway in Port of New Parm
Walk north and speak with the guard standing next to the gate. He'll give you some adventuring tips - keep talking to him until he answers all three of your questions.
Adventuring Tutorial (1) Listen to all advices from soldier in Town of New Parm
Go through the gate and over to Mansion 1 in the east. Speak with Clara to deliver the letter you received way back at the start of the game.
Pen Pals (2) Deliver letter from Francois to Clara
Head back towards the center of town to House 7. Speak with the man inside to hear about his game, then speak with him again to play. Though he says you only get one chance, you will be allowed to try as many times as you like... though it's impossible to win. Just select each of "Rock", "Scissors", and "Paper" to unlock the achievement.
Rock, Paper, Cheat (1) Try out all 3 unwinnable choices in RPS game against watermelon-loving old man in Town of New Parm
Visit Pakon's Dinner Theater on the north side of town. Speak with the man at the far left in front of the stage - he'll offer to bet on a coin flip (just like the gambler on the Steamer). I suspect you'll win this every time - the achievement will unlock when Sue has the man order her a slice of apple pie.

There are four Sulfa Weeds that can be collected: Three White ones which can be used as healing items for your party, and a Red one that will let you continue the story. You cannot collect any White ones after you grab the Red one, so be thorough as you climb the mountain.
Rigorous Herbalist (5) Collect all 3 White Sulfa Weeds before picking up Red Sulfa Weed
There are nine treasures to collect for this achievement. The White Sulfa Weeds do not count, but the Red one does.
Treasure Hunter X: Herb Mountains (10) Collect all treasure in Herb Mountains
The intent is for the player to enter a duct near the locker room to eavesdrop on the three generals, who will reveal the password. However, this password is the same for all playthroughs, so you could just skip right to entering the code on the console to unlock the warehouse, making this achievement technically missable.
To Eavesdrop or to Peep? (2) Learn keypad password in Garlyle Base
There are thirteen treasures to collect in the Garlyle Base (the Master Key retrieved from Saki does not count).
Treasure Hunter XI: Garlyle Base (10) Collect all treasure in Garlyle Base

There are twenty-seven treasures to be found in this valley, including two Mana Eggs.
Treasure Hunter XVII: Valley of the Flying Dragon (25) Collect all treasure in Valley of the Flying Dragon
Important
Sue and Gadwin will not be with you for too much longer, so you'll want to start focusing on their spells and skills (if you haven't already). You can hang out around Gadwin's House to grind for a bit - run over to the enemy groups to the west, then back to Gadwin's to heal and save as needed. Either run from the battles to keep the enemy groups from disappearing (you will still gain weapon and element experience), or save and reload to respawn the ones you've defeated.
With four party members, buffs will gain more experience per cast due to having more targets. Sue's "Fight" Cheer skill is especially good for grinding weapon, Fire, and Earth levels because its experience gain per cast does not scale down as your levels go up. Wind levels will take longer - Howl will be your best bet for a while. Water levels can be more easily gained soon, so don't worry about getting those in-battle.
For Gadwin, casting Diggin' over and over is the best way to grind his Earth levels, but you could also use his Eruption Cut and Dragon Cut skills to gain a bit of Fire and Sword experience, too.
As soon as you enter the village, Gadwin will point out the inn before (temporarily) leaving the party. Before going there, head southeast through the gates, east to the beach, then find a villager standing near the large rock face on the beach's north end. Speak to him and respond "Yeah, let's hear it." - you'll get the achievement after he finishes his story.
Local Folklore I (1) Listen to tale about "Whale Rock" in Dight Village
There are twenty-one treasures to collect at Mt. Typhoon, including a Mana Egg.
Treasure Hunter XVIII: Mt. Typhoon (10) Collect all treasure on Mt. Typhoon
Important
The water in the Mt. Typhoon area is acidic, damaging your party as you walk through it. This is a decent way to grind out Water experience - as long as you restore at least 1 HP, you'll get three Water experience per casting of Heal. When you run out of MP, either run back to Dight's inn, or use the save point at the start of Typhoon Tower. If you spent some time grinding with Sue's "Fight" Cheer skill, she should have a ton of Level 1 Magic MP to work with (plus some Level 2 Magic MP for Alhealer, though that's still only 3 experience per cast).
You could grind out some levels with Justin and Feena, too, but there are better opportunities later on (and these characters aren't tied to missable achievements, so no rush). Feena will eventually need 99(!) Water levels (and 99 Wind levels) for her final skill, so making a dent in that now may save you some boredom later on.
There are fourteen treasures to find in the tower (the Spear of Heroes doesn't count), including a Mana Egg.
Treasure Hunter XIX: Typhoon Tower (10) Collect all treasure in Typhoon Tower
You'll find eighteen treasures among the Lama Mountains.
Treasure Hunter XX: Lama Mountains (10) Collect all treasure in Lama Mountains
When you first enter the village, head south to go through a gate and scare away a villager. At the four-way intersection, take the southwestern path and speak with the villager there. This is the fortune-teller - tell her "I'll have my fortune told!", listen to her chant, then speak with her one more time to get your results.
Ribbitty ribbit! (1) Have frog sorceress tell your love fortune in Gumbo Village
Enter House 2 and speak with the villager inside. Respond "OK then, you tell it to me!" to hear his story.
Local Folklore II (1) Listen to tale about "Brave Couple" in Gumbo Village
There are twenty-five treasures to find in the Volcano, including a Mana Egg. Twenty-four of the treasures can be found before fighting the boss; the last one can only be found by re-entering the Volcano after it implodes (all other treasures will be inaccessible).
Treasure Hunter XXI: Volcano (10) Collect all treasure in the Volcano
There are twenty-seven treasures to collect at Twin Towers (there's only one tower, however). Don't forget the one in the basement when Justin is solo; you'll also need to remember to visit the West tower area before you leave.
Treasure Hunter XXII: Twin Towers (25) Collect all treasure in Twin Towers
Important
This is the last time you'll have all four party members together. If you haven't completed Sue and Gadwin's skill and spell achievements, you should do so before returning to Dight Village.
After entering Dight, but before speaking with the Elder, talk with this villager to receive a First Aid Kit. He's dressed in green and blue, and standing near where the bony path reaches the beach.
Villager's Reward (1) Receive First Aid Kit in Dight Village
Speak with the same villager from the Local Folklore I achievement, and again agree to hear his story. Keep talking until the achievement is granted.
Local Folklore III (1) Listen to tale "why do people have to work for their food" in Dight Village

There are twenty-eight treasures to find in the Virgin Forest areas.

Treasure Hunter XXVII: Tower of Doom (25) Collect all treasure in Tower of Doom
There are eighteen treasures to collect in the Zil Desert.
Treasure Hunter XXVIII: Zil Desert (10) Collect all treasure in Zil Desert
Important
Two optional areas can be reached from within Zil Desert: The Soldier's Graveyard and the Castle of Dreams. There are achievements to be earned in each, but the RetroAchievements list has you visiting Zil Padon first (probably worth upgrading your equipment, anyway).
Enter the Apartment Building Hall, then go upstairs to Apartment B. Speak with the brown-hatted painter twice, respond "Sure. Draw them.", then choose one of Milda, Rapp, or Feena. Repeat until you've seen the reactions of all three allies.
Aspiring Painter (1) Have aspiring painter draw 3 party members in Town of Zil Padon
Speak with a blue-capped Mogay near the town's western entrance. Ask him about each topic: "Access to Cafu restricted!?" and "Favorable reviews for Alqada massage".
Zil Padon News Report I (1) Hear both topics from news reporter in Town of Zil Padon before events in Laine Village
Descend to the (B4) East area and defeat the area's boss.
Kung Fu Master (10) Defeat Kung Fu Master in Soldier's Graveyard
There are twenty-four treasures to find in the Soldier's Graveyard. You'll need to collect all four Soldier's Souls before the chest containing the Energy Charm can be accessed.
Treasure Hunter XXIX: Soldier's Graveyard (25) Collect all treasure in Soldier's Graveyard
There are seventeen treasures to collect in the Castle of Dreams, including a Mana Egg.
Treasure Hunter XXX: Castle of Dreams (10) Collect all treasure in Castle of Dreams
Head to the Lord's Chamber area and defeat the boss there.
Lord's Ghost (10) Defeat Lord's Ghost in Castle of Dreams
There are twenty-two treasures to find in the Savanna Wilderness, including two Mana Eggs.
Treasure Hunter XXXI: Savanna Wilderness (10) Collect all treasure in Savanna Wilderness
Important
The Tower of Temptation is another optional area. It's tougher than the Soldier's Graveyard and the Castle of Dreams, but it's also accessible until the game's "point of no return", so you could opt to come back later with higher levels and/or different party members. It is worthwhile to enter briefly and pick up the six Zero weapons - they have minimal attack power, so they can be helpful for grinding weapon levels.
If you can make it to the top of the tower, there are two very useful accessories: The Astral Miracle, which doubles weapon experience, and the Ethereal Miracle, which doubles magic experience.
Climb to the (10F) area and defeat the Gargoyle boss.
Gargoyle (10) Defeat Gargoyle in Tower of Temptation
Climb to the (11F) area and defeat the Slug Fish boss.
Slug Fish (10) Defeat Slug Fish in Tower of Temptation
Climb to the (12F) area and defeat the Leviathan boss.
Leviathan (25) Defeat Leviathan in Tower of Temptation
There are fifty-five treasures to find in the Tower of Temptation (hence the 50 point value).
- Twenty-six on floors 1-4
- Ten on floors 5-7
- Nineteen on floors 8-13
Treasure Hunter XXXII: Tower of Temptation (50) Collect all treasure in Tower of Temptation
There are twelve treasures to collect on the Brinan Plateau.
Treasure Hunter XXXIII: Brinan Plateau (10) Collect all treasure in Brinan Plateau
When you first walk under the archway, you'll enter a series of dialogue scenes that will leave you outside of Milda's House. Just go up the stairs inside to enter Milda's Bedroom - the achievement will unlock immediately.
A Cowgirl's Taste (1) Enter Milda's Bedroom
Enter the Barn and speak to the male villager inside, then inspect the penned creature twice to unlock the achievement.
Rappijulian Laine Volvok (1) In Village of Laine learn common name for Rappijulian Laine Volvok and tease your team member twice
Important
Milda will leave the party after you complete the next area and return to Laine, so make sure her skills are maxed out beforehand. Unfortunately, she'll need something like 110 total weapon levels, so you will certainly need to grind for a while.
The Zero Sword/Rod/Axe weapons are helpful here. Equip Milda with the one corresponding to her lowest weapon level, then get in a battle. Set Milda's tactic to "Play Fair" and everyone else's to "Withdraw". Cancel the auto-battle when HP gets low to either heal or retreat (and heal outside of battle). Rinse and repeat. I had success against Snow Boars on Brinan Plateau, especially when they summon allies.
You could also set the non-Milda members to "Power Up", but that starts becoming counterproductive as they learn spells like WOW! and Def-less. You would also want to stash any items you wouldn't want to waste against regular enemies, as well as items that could be used to cast damaging spells.
Progress will slow as Milda gets stronger. You could try the strategy shown in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBBZWxnq-0k to grind Alligators in the Petrified Forest (using WOW!/Def-less in place of the paralysis status to break through the Alligator's physical defense) - I didn't think it was worth the time spent in setup, but at least you can let the emulator run on fast forward and grind a bit without your input.
There are twenty-four treasures to collect in the Warp Space areas of Abandoned Laine Village, including a Mana Egg.
Treasure Hunter XXXIV: Abandoned Laine Village (10) Collect all treasure in Abandoned Laine Village
Speak with the Mogay near the western entrance again (the same one you spoke with for the Padon News Report I achievement). As before, ask about both topics.
Zil Padon News Report II (1) Hear both topics from news reporter in Town of Zil Padon after events in Laine Village
After Guido joins the party, enter Mogay House 1 and speak to the girl in front of the barrel. The text box will say that you've received a "Green Potion", but it's just a standard Blue Pill item that you've seen before.
Preparations (1) Receive Blue Medicine from mogay girl after Guido joins

Important
Guido will leave the party at the end of the next area. Thankfully, his skills are much quicker to maximize than Milda's. Give him a sword (if you haven't been training up that skill already - Guido starts with enough levels in both knife and bow), find a weak enemy near a Save Point, use Mogay Pickpocket until you run out of SP, then retreat and recover. Getting to Sword level 40 should be enough to unlock his achievement.
There are seventeen treasures to find on Rainbow Mountain.
Treasure Hunter XXXVII: Rainbow Mountain (10) Collect all treasure on Rainbow Mountain
There are two treasures to collect in the Shrine of Alent, including the game's final Mana Egg.
Treasure Hunter XXXVIII: Alent (1) Collect all treasure in Alent
Important
With Liete in the party (and some additional levels for your other members), now's a good time to take care of the Tower of Temptation (if you haven't already).
Enter the House of Dorlin the Wise and speak to Dorlin three times to unlock this achievement.
Mistress Liete (1) Make Dorlin a happy bull... man by introducing him to Liete
There are fourteen treasures to find in the Luzet Mountains.
Treasure Hunter XXXIX: Luzet Mountains (10) Collect all treasure in Luzet Mountains
There are fifteen treasures to collect in the Underground Railway Ruins (underneath the J Base).
Treasure Hunter XL: Underground Railway Ruins (10) Collect all treasure in Underground Railway Ruins
There are nine treasures to collect at the Field Base.
Treasure Hunter XLI: Field Base (3) Collect all treasure in Field Base
Enter the Officer's Tent and speak with the parrot perched along the back wall. Choosing either option should unlock the achievement.
Talking Bird (1) Teach something to parrot in Field Base
Important
After the destruction of Zil Padon, you'll have to walk through the Luzet Mountains again to reach the J Base. This is your last chance to clear the Tower of Temptation with a full party, so do so now if you haven't already.
There are eight treasures to collect in the Spirit Sanctuary (the Spirit Sword does not count).
Treasure Hunter XLII: Spirit Sanctuary (10) Collect all treasure in Spirit Sanctuary
There are twenty-four treasures to collect in the Icarian City.
Treasure Hunter XLIII: Icarian City (10) Collect all treasure in Icarian City
There are twenty-five treasures to find inside of Gaia. The last four are found past the final Save Point, after defeating Baal.
Treasure Hunter XLIV: Gaia (25) Collect all treasure inside Gaia
Once you've reached Gaia, your backtracking options are limited. It's helpful to have the following beforehand:
- The Astral Miracle accessory (doubles weapon experience)
- The Ethereal Miracle accessory (doubles magic experience)
- Weapons of various types (the Zero weapons will do) You do still have access to Stash Points - there's one in Gaia before the final bosses, and one in the Icarian City (4) area (right near where you fought the boss there).
As before, you can use a trapped area to grind out Water experience. If you leave Gaia, you can re-enter the Icarian City. Descend the spiral staircase to the (3) area and head east to the room with the falling ceiling. Every drop of the ceiling will inflict 36 HP damage, so you can quickly run yourself down to 1 HP (this trap won't kill you), then open the menu and use Heal/Healer/Alhealer+ until everyone's MP is depleted. Just return to the Save Point atop the spiral staircase and repeat as needed.
- This is a good way to boost characters with low water levels, but it may be more efficient to cast Snooze or Freeze on large groups of Gaia Slimes. A benefit of this method is that you will always get the same amount of experience per casting, regardless of level. The Ethereal Miracle doubles that amount, even outside of battle!
Within Gaia, the Slime enemies are great because they'll divide during battle - the max seems to be nine at a time. Multi-target spells will help you grind quickly, especially those which don't actually damage enemies (Def-less, Snooze, Freeze, etc). Then just finish them off with Burnflame or Burnflare - that's the only good way to get Fire experience for all characters.
Earth experience is straightforward: Just cast Diggin' over and over, earning 12 points each time. You can kill off most enemies and debilitate them (Fiora, Shhh!, Freeze/Gravity) to keep them from bugging you. Feena and Rapp can use this same setup to grind Wind experience with Runner - just use the Evasion command to put everyone close together first.
There's not much of a trick to weapon levels. Liete can only equip Blunt weapons, and she'll maximize her skills at weapon level 33. Feena doesn't have high requirements; if you focus on grinding her magic levels, Zap! Whip will maximize along the way. Justin and Rapp have greater requirements, but they also have some non-damaging skills that you can spam (Aura and Mist Hide, respectively). Aside from that, just give them a Zero weapon and fight battles using emulator fast-forward.
Feena's spell grind is the worst: A bug in the code locks her Time Gate spell until you reach level 99 in each of Water and Wind (it was meant to be 33 each). The fastest way to grind Wind experience is with the Runner method, described above. I went with the trap method for Water experience - it's possible that Snooze-ing Gaia Slimes is faster.
You'll spend a little time working on the other characters' levels, but they're not too bad. If you earned the skill/spell achievements for ex-party members on this playthrough, you can use the items they left behind (like Sue's "Crayon" items) in your stash to immediately increase your levels. The amounts will depend on how hard you grinded them up and how you distributed the weapon levels to maximize the skills. Since you probably only care about the achievements at this point, you could save, apply to one character, then reload and use them on another.
