2) Introduction

Welcome to Firefighter F.D. 18, a criminally underrated PS2 game developed and published by Konami in 2004. A fire outbreak in a tunnel under Interstate 42 is just the start of a serial arson case that soon spreads across the city. You are Dean McGregor, a firefighter. You fight fires.

Plot twist: The fires fight back. These fires are not content with just sitting there while you blast them with your fire hose. Some of them will actually attack you with scattered embers, spreading conflagrations, and sudden explosions. And then there are the bosses of each stage. Yes, boss fights in a firefighting game, with health meters and all. Each one will try to end your career in their own unique ways while you do your best to survive and snuff them out first.

Your main goal, however, is not to put out every single fire in the area. Each mission has a number of survivors who have been trapped by the flames, and it's your job to clear a path and rescue every single one of them before they succumb to the blaze. If even a single innocent civilian dies, it's game over.

Special thanks to Souzooka, both for developing this set and for being there as I worked my way towards mastery.

3) Walkthrough

Step 1: Story Mode

While you COULD get three of the four difficulty-based completion achievements simply by playing on Hard, you should start your first playthrough on Easy mode anyway. You'll want the map familiarity first.

Step 2: Lost Items

You could get all of these over the course of your first playthrough, but it's very unlikely without a walkthrough or manually sweeping every corner of every room. It's easier to do it now that you have unlocked Stage Select. Just remember that you have to complete the entire stage after picking up an item for it to count.

Step 3: Time Trials

Once you grab all of the lost items, you will unlock a new character: Dean Max McGregor. He is much more powerful than the default Dean - he deals twice as much damage to fire, comes with infinite fire extinguishers and Impulse, and has even more health, with the only drawback being a reduced health regen rate. In other words, he's perfect for trying to get through each stage as fast as possible.

Step 4: Brave Firefighter

The ultimate test of your abilities. You'll have to utilize the time trial routes you've created and continue to earn golds over the course of a Hard campaign, but now you'll also have to set aside some time to... fight fires! Gasp!

4) General Tips and Tricks

  • Don't be afraid to just run through small fires. The damage you take will heal back over time (unless you're wearing a tuxedo).
  • Rescuing a survivor will pause the clock, but your health will continue to regen. Take advantage of this when you've taken too much fire damage.
  • You have about one second of invincibility after going through a door, rescuing a survivor, or using your Support attack.
  • The wide nozzle is a defensive weapon, mainly for stopping attacks from red fires. The narrow nozzle is for offense and range.
  • The extinguisher does more damage than your hose. Impulse is for clearing paths. Support attack is for emergencies, stopping time, and boss fights.
  • Survivors are always present on the map, not just when the game is telling you where they are. Keep this in mind when routing out your time trials.
  • Spamming your quickstep is NOT faster than running.
  • You can interrupt anything you're doing by quickstepping.
  • You don't need to activate the ventilation in every gas-filled room. In fact, you can get away with running for a step or two, then walking for a step or two, and repeating this until you reach your destination.
  • The large, blocky robots can be defeated instantly with explosives. Dean Max McGregor has three water-activated bombs. Otherwise, swing the axe twice, then back away until they stop spinning. Repeat three times. Their electric attack can be dodged by crouching.

Step 1: Story Mode | Total points: 189

Blaze of Glory (5)
Defeat Blaze.

Blaze is just a big fire that thinks it deserves to be a boss. Simply spraying it while moving slowly to the side will be enough to win.

Infernal Contraption (5)
Defeat Inferno.

Inferno spawns multiple fire pillars that slowly roam around the cleared paths of the room. Only the big flame at the far corner of the room counts towards damaging it. Keep an eye on your mini-map while you attack the main flame so you don't get hit by the wandering pillars (which you can extinguish). If you have an extinguisher, it will turn this fight into a joke.

I Could Be Your Angel (5)
Defeat Angel Flare.

The burning shirts should be defended against using your wide nozzle hose. Once you're not being hassled, you can either attack Angel Flare itself to deal damage, or you can put out the fires alongside the lockers to reduce the respawn rate of the burning shirts. Angel Flare will reignite the lockers from time to time, however.

Heated Meeting (5)
Defeat Firestorm.

Firestorm is comprised of three fire tornadoes that will gradually pull you towards them. You will not be able to escape their pull while you're spraying, so if you're getting too close to the center, stop shooting and back away. Firestorm will also occasionally throw fireballs and flaming chairs in your direction.

Bullet Hell (5)
Defeat Core/Tentacle.

Both tentacles must be defeated before you can attack the core. Defeating one tentacle will change how the other tentacle attacks; just stay out of the gas it shoots and you'll be fine. The core itself will add lightning to the mix once it's vulnerable. If Dean is lit up with a purple glow, you're in the path of the attack. On harder difficulties, the walls of the room will also be constantly electrified, making an already narrow arena even smaller.

He'll Fire Anyone (5)
Defeat Hellfire.

Don't bother to run around the place trying to catch up with Hellfire; it'll just retreat by the time you get into range. Instead, keep your eyes on your surroundings to dodge or defend against the attacks it throws at you from every angle. On harder difficulties, you'll be under near-constant attack no matter where Hellfire has popped up. Keep your hose spraying, and be ready to switch to the wide nozzle to protect yourself when you see the glowing lights near the railing.

Unarmed and Dangerous (5)
Defeat Death Pyre.

The biggest threat Death Pyre poses is standing in the fires it leaves behind. Just keep moving. If you somehow run out of extinguisher ammo, more will occasionally drop from above.

Ghost Rider (5)
Defeat Helldriver.

Helldriver takes the form of three burning cars constantly exploding as they pinball around the arena. Keep your eyes on the ground near them; if you see a bright light forming, that's a sign that they're going to shoot a quick explosion in that zone and propel in the opposite direction. If two cars roll to a stop next to each other, use your Impulse to do piercing damage to both of them at once.

Emotion Engine (5)
Defeat Parasite Flame.

Ugh. Hose it down, chase it down, repeat. When Parasite Flame starts exploding and spraying fireballs everywhere, it will be invulnerable until it reaches its next destination. Get to the stairs to get out of range of the fireballs, and use the time in between to put out any fires you can reach.

Let It Rip (5)
Defeat Tri-Blade.

The speed at which it spins goes up as the difficulty does. Don't get so absorbed in attacking it that you lose track of its blades. Stay close to minimize how far you have to move, or use a Support attack to deal damage and become invincible for the duration and a brief second afterwards.

Stop, This Beat is Killing Me (5)
Defeat Fatal Pulse.

Fatal Pulse has three different attacks.

  1. When it shrinks down and shines purple, it will send trails of fire along the platform to cover your tiny area. Putting these out takes priority.
  2. When it shoots a bright pillar upwards, it will set the ceiling on fire. This will eventually create red fires that will rain down attacks on you.
  3. Occasionally, it will send an explosive barrel up into the air towards you. Dodge this as best as you can.
Crank That (5)
Defeat Blister Flare.

This is basically Bomberman. Blister Flare's main attack is to send explosive barrels down the lanes, which will explode soon after they stop rolling. You want to get at least two squares away before they blow up to be safe. It can also attack with lightning, which comes in two different forms. If two or three targets are still alive, it will send a single bolt down on your position - you want to move out of the way. If only one target remains, it will send a circle of bolts to surround you - you do NOT want to move. Blister Flare is also extremely weak to the fire extinguisher.

Assume the Party Escort Submission Position (5)
Defeat Cremator.

Cremator is a juggling act. You have to balance putting out the fires it sends at you from below, the weights it sends at you from above, and hitting it for damage. Occasionally it will close its doors and the room will start glowing red. Once this happens, you want to drop off the moving platform and keep moving around until you hear it release a flamethrower attack aimed at your position. Just don't stand still, then climb back up the stairs and onto the platform to resume the fight.

Don't Shoot the Messenger (5)
Defeat Jason Hunt.

There are two ways to safely attack Jason. Whichever way you choose to do it, know that charging up your Impulse has no effect on how much damage you do, so quick shots are the way to go.

  1. Wide berth: Run around him in a wide circle to avoid his flamethrower. Eventually he will stop attacking and shake his weapon as if it was jammed. Use this opportunity to blast him for a big chunk of damage.
  2. Close the gap: Run around him while slowly getting closer. Eventually Jason will run away to reposition himself before resuming his attack. Use this chance to blast him - the amount of damage you do to him is based on how close you are when you hit him. At point-blank, you remove a massive chunk of his health and make him fall over! Be warned that you can only blast him once each time he repositions himself.
I'll Guard Every Body! (5)
Defeat Bodyguard.

Like Jason, the Bodyguard has two reliable ways to damage him. Also like Jason, charging your Impulse does not affect how much damage you do.

  1. The Bullfighter: Getting far enough away from the Bodyguard will prompt him to charge at you with a body tackle; dodge step out of the way at the last second to avoid getting hit. Then quick face him and blast him for a small chunk of damage. I don't recommend this tactic, but it's there.
  2. Bob and Weave: Getting close enough to the Bodyguard will cause him to throw either one or two punches at you. Dodge-step away from him, then quickly turn and blast him. If he puts up his guard, then you'll have to bait out another attack before you can hit him again.

Rescue 50 people.
Cooled Off (10)

Step 2: Lost Items | Total points: 50

Every stage (except Stage 4-5) has a number of lost items scattered across the map. These are typically found in spots that are out of the way of the survivors you're meant to rescue. If you're going to search for lost items, it's best to do it on Easy mode. You don't have to collect all of the items in a stage in one run. Lost items already collected can be picked up again, but this has no effect.

  • Mission 2: After rescuing Survivor B, head straight down the corridor to the end to find an unmarked survivor.

Stage 4-2 | Gold time - 5:50

3

4

10

If any level needs a walkthrough, it's this one.

  1. Turn around and hug the left wall until you hit an elevator. Ride it up to find the first survivor.
  2. Continue forward onto the platform ahead of you. Hit the button on the front to cross to the other side where the second survivor is waiting.
  3. Turn left at the end of the stairs and move to the elevator. The third survivor is to your right after you ride it up.
  4. Turn around and carefully pass through the jetfire section to the next elevator. The fourth survivor is at the end.
  5. Hit the button on your left, then cross the beam to the other side. Head left and to the end to press the button to call the elevator. Ride it up.
  6. Go straight and hit the button on the pillar to call the platform. Hop on and press the button on the right side to cross to a different section. Ride the elevator down to the fifth survivor.
  7. Push the button at the end to move a small platform into place. Go back up the elevator, then back onto the platform, and hit the right button.
  8. Turn left off the platform and follow the walkway to the end, then fall down to reach the sixth survivor.
  9. Ride the elevator up, then onto the platform to cross the gap. Go through the left opening and hit the button to move another walkway into place.
  10. Go through the right opening on the platform this time to reach a new lift. Head left to reach the final survivor.

Stage 4-3 | Gold time - 9:50 | Very Hard - 10:17

10

10

  • On harder difficulties, many rooms will become smoky, making it impossible to see anything. Crouching will let you see through the darkness.
  • Blister Flare: Don't be afraid to use your Support attack just to clear out some fires on the ground. This fight can get pretty crazy and you want nice, cool stone beneath your feet.

Stage 4-4 | Gold time - 11:40 | Very Hard - 14:57

25

  • Mission 2: The large robot guarding the door to the first survivor can be one-shot by activating a bomb near it.
  • Mission 2: There's a wall along the right side that can be chopped through for a quick shortcut to the security button. Your crew will let you know when you're near it. But if you take this shortcut, you'll need to clear the hallway leading to the second survivor before you rescue the first one - his health meter drops fast.
  • Mission 3: On the way to the second survivor, you'll find a backdraft room that has a security button inside. On harder difficulties, save this room for AFTER you rescue the second survivor. It spawns a red fire that, when put out, makes it impossible to see the upcoming gauntlet of falling objects.
  • Mission 3: In the room with the third survivor, just ignore the fire and run to him, then run to the escape vent. Your invincibility frames will protect you.
  • Cremator: If you have to choose between getting hit by a flame or a falling weight, take the falling weight. It deals little damage and has no knockback.

  • Go right at the burning intersection to progress.
  • Activate the bombs near the large boxes from a large distance to give them enough time to clear your path.

Step 4: Brave Firefighter | Total points: 100

Brave Firefighter (100)
Achieve the rank of Hero by, in one campaign playthrough and on the Hard difficulty or higher,
obtaining 10 gold record times and no worse times, rescuing all survivors with 45% health or more,
using no continues, and obtaining 500,000 extinguish points.

That's a lot of words. Let's break this down into pieces.

Obtaining 10 gold record times

Ten gold medals means you'll have to play the campaign all the way through the end of Stage 4-1. That doesn't mean you need to have your 500,000 points by the end of 4-1, but that's around the point where the difficulty starts to skyrocket. If you need to go even further to get your needed score, you'll have to continue fulfilling all the other criteria of reaching the rank of Hero - Gold times only, rescue survivors with 45% or more health left, and no continues.

Rescue all survivors with 45% health or more

Survivor health drops rather quickly on Hard mode. It's not a failure if their health bar turns yellow and starts beeping at you, but it's cutting it close. If you're not sure whether you made it to someone in time or not, a good rule of thumb is to listen to the line they say when you rescue them. If it's one of the lines you get so often where they're thankful for being saved or they complain about their throat, good news! But if their line seems strange or unfamiliar, or they sound angry, that's a failure and you'll have to start the stage again.

Using no continues

This is pretty self-explanatory: if you get a game over, you press exit. But to be clear, you are allowed to save your game between stages and reload them as often as you need. I'd actually recommend using several saves, in case you feel like you could improve on your score in a level.

Obtaining 500,000 extinguish points

Extinguish Points, as you may guess, are points you earn for putting out fires. The more fires you put out, the more points you get. But putting out fires naturally means you will slow down. Therefore, the key to this challenge is to know how fast you CAN complete a stage so that you know how much time you can spend fighting fires that you would otherwise ignore. But you also need to determine which fires are worth putting out. What you want to look for are long lines of fire that can be taken out quickly with your Impulse.

Naturally, some stages are better for farming points than others. Below is a breakdown of the scores I earned during my run to earn this achievement:

As we can see, Stages 3-2 and 3-3 are the best places to rack up your score, since the levels are designed around showing off the power of your newly-acquired Impulse extinguisher. Indeed, it is possible to secure the necessary point total by the end of Stage 3-2. I also recommend farming the boss room of Stage 2-1, as there's a lot of fire just sitting around and Inferno likes to respawn the flames often. Just be mindful of your timer.
