Crash Bandicoot - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki
Welcome to the RetroAchievements guide for Crash Bandicoot. Developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment as an exclusive title for the PlayStation, this title was a game changer for 3D platformers. It is one of the highest selling titles on the PlayStation, and has spawned dozens of mainstream and spin-off titles, including several remakes on next-gen consoles. It all started here - we hope you enjoy playing through this as much as we did.
Please note that this guide has been written for the NTSC-U version of the game. There are three versions (NTSC-U, PAL, NTSC-J), and there may be differences. Of note, the NTSC-J version is very different - some levels are in a different order, some levels have different box counts, and even the coloured gem locations are different.

This page provides a full guide for completing Crash Bandicoot and unlocking all current retro achievements. However, you may find you prefer to simply use parts of the guide so as not to spoil gameplay.
-
The Achievement Roadmap provides an overview of all of the achievements, and a rough plan for how this guide progresses through the game to accomplish them. You may want to just read this, in order to set yourself up on the optimal path.
-
Missable Achievements details the single achievement that can be missed. You may want to just read this to ensure you do not miss it.
-
Tips provides useful information about the game. We would recommend you review this section, regardless; especially if you do not have access to the game manual, which is otherwise the only source for information you are expected to have.
-
Achievement Guide provides a walkthrough of the game. Note that we do not go into details for how to beat each level. You will find information on the first time dealing with enemies and obstacles, tips for hidden boxes, tips for the required bonus tokens and tips for handling the boss fights. Each level includes at least three screenshots which demonstrate main points; you can open the images to a new tab, and click on them to see them in larger resolution.
-
What Next provides some recommendations of what to do next, if you want more Crash after completing this set.
-
Indices provides indices of useful information;
- An index of each achievement, useful for looking up a particular achievement and exactly where it is in both the text and video guides.
- An index of each level, useful for looking up a particular levels box count, gem requirements and exactly where it is in both the text and video guides.
- Am index of passwords, which lists all of the passwords encountered when following through this guide; useful if you have lost your progress, or for some reason just want to skip to a certain part of the game.
At the time of writing this update, Crash Bandicoot has 46 achievements worth 460 points.
-
There are 26 achievements for completing each of the regular levels and collecting their respective gems. Level gems are earned by breaking every box and completing the level without dying. Bonuses do not count; nor does dying inside a bonus or before a checkpoint.
-
There are 12 achievements covering the 6 bosses; each boss has an achievement for beating them, and an achievement for beating them with a special condition.
-
There is an achievement for collecting all of the gems and seeing the secret ending via the gem path in the second last level. This is also considered a win condition, since it counts as beating the game, and does not include a fight with Cortex.
-
There are 4 achievements for entering and completing various bonus rounds. Note that the two achievements for completing the 'Cortex' bonuses are actually for collecting the keys he drops at the end - you must pick these up for them to count. These also unlock bonus levels.
-
There are 3 remaining achievements for completing additional tasks, including a single achievement which is missable.
-
This guide will detail completing the game in this order:
- First, we will play through the game from the first level to the last boss without backtracking, collecting most available gems along the way.
- Along the way, we will collect all of the boss achievements, and any other achievement unrelated to the gems we have yet to collect.
- It is important to note that defeating Cortex takes you to the main menu; make sure you have saved your progress. There are options if you have not, which we will detail at the respective section.
- Second, we will backtrack and collect the remaining gems that we could not complete during the standard playthrough.
- Along the way, we will visit the two bonus levels. These can be visited as soon as you collect the keys, but they have been placed here to mix things up a bit with new content.
- Finally, we will take the gem path out of the second last level to unlock the 100% ending and complete the game.
This game has one missable achievement; Bandicoot Abuse earned by reaching a level completion screen with at least 50 boxes left unbroken. This achievement is missable because the level completion screen will not appear if the gem has already been collected.
There are three levels where this achievement is possible:
- "Temple Ruins", which has a total of 67 boxes. This is the level we will use, since it comes up first and is technically the easiest level to earn this on (both by being an easier level, and by having 2 more boxes to act as a buffer).
- "Jaws of Darkness", which has a total of 65 boxes. This is also a recommended level to achieve this on.
- "Sunset Vista", which has a total of 50 boxes, meaning you can not break any box at all.
If you have already unlocked the gem from all three of these levels, the following password will take you back to the start of "Temple Ruins":

Boxes are the primary collectable of the game:
- Wumpa Boxes are the standard unmarked boxes and contain 1 Wumpa fruit. Collect 100 of these guys to earn a life.
- Witch Doctor Boxes contain Aku Aku masks. One mask protects against a hit; three give temporary invulnerability.
- Bounce boxes can be jumped on multiple times for up to 10 Wumpa fruit.
- Arrow boxes can be used to reach higher areas. Hold jump to jump higher, and spin them when you are ready to break them.
- ? boxes can contain anything from Wumpa fruit to a bonus token to an extra life.
- ! boxes trigger something in the level; usually the revealing of extra boxes. They will always be metal.
- TNT boxes will count down from 3 and explode when jumped on. Do not spin them unless you want to die.
- Crash boxes contain a life.
- C boxes act as checkpoints. Not that useful when your objective is to complete each level without dying.
- Metal boxes can not be broken, and do not count towards completion. Along with the ! variant, they also come in standard and arrow.
- Outline boxes can not be broken until something else reveals them. Look for a ! box somewhere in the level.
-
Gems are the secondary collectable of the game:
- Collecting every box inside a level without dying rewards you with a gem.
- If you die before hitting a checkpoint, than you are safe; otherwise, you will need to quit to the map and restart the level.
- Bonus levels do not count - you can die without penalty, and do not have to collect all the boxes.
- Some levels reward coloured gems, which unlock hidden paths in other levels.
- Since you often find the required colour gem in future level, backtracking is required for 100% completion.
-
You can save whenever you collect a gem, or complete a Tawna or Cortex bonus level. Save whenever you can.
-
This game does not save lives - you will always load with 3. This should not be a big disadvantage.
-
Bonus levels are unlocked by collecting three tokens featuring the respective characters heads during a level.
-
Lives, Masks and Bonus Tokens can all be lost if you spin them, or if they are caught in TNT explosions.
-
Two bonus levels are unlocked by picking up the keys Cortex drops in his bonus levels.
-
Holding jump when you bounce off objects will perform a high bounce, giving Crash additional height.
-
You can use Crash's shadow to gauge his landing position, especially when performing high bounces.
-
If you do not have access to the game manual, The Video Games Museum has uploaded a copy which can be accessed, here.
It is also worth noting that this guide was written while playing the NTSC-U version of the game on DuckStation 0.1-10903 (Windows 11). As previously mentioned, there are some small differences in the regional versions of the game (especially the NTSC-J); and there may be slight differences in how the game behaves on alternate platforms, emulators or DuckStation versions.
A full video playthrough of this guide can be found on YouTube.
Boxes: 49 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: None
The first level of the game; naturally one of the easiest. This level introduces you to a few concepts, and can be a good level to come back to if you want some easy masks. We will need all of our masks for an achievement; so if you lose one, exit to the map, and restart the level.
This level introduces two enemies:
- Crabs are a generic enemy that move left and right, and can be spun away or jumped on.
- Turtles are a generic enemy that may move left and right or forward and back, and can be spun away or jumped on. Jumping on a turtle makes them withdraw into their shell, which can then be bounced on. You will need this to reach areas in later levels.
To start with, we need to collect the three Aku Aku masks; so make sure to collect them.
- The first mask is in the Witch Doctor box on the left, shortly after the first enemy.
- The second mask is in the Witch Doctor box as you climb the big steps.
- The third mask is on the right at the top of the big steps.
Collecting the third mask will give you temporary invulnerability; we need to get to the end of the level with this still active, so make sure you leg it.
Rutabaga! (3) With the power of Aku Aku, become invincible against anything!... or almost...
Make sure you grab the box hiding behind the second fallen stone block, on the right, and continue right at the fork. Hit the ! box, and when the bridge of boxes start to appear, run across. The Aku Aku invulnerability should break the them as you run across, earning your second achievement.
Iron Boots (5) Destroy all the straight line boxes at the end of N. Sanity Beach without jumping
Backtrack up the left path to collect the remaining boxes. Assuming you broke all the boxes you ran into, before, there will only be two. Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
An Easy Start for a not so Friendly Adventure (5) Destroy all the boxes from N. Sanity Beach and collect the gem
Boxes: 38 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Green | Bonuses: Tawna
The second level introduces three main concepts; TNT boxes, bonus rounds, and coloured gem paths. As such, it will be the first level you will need to come back to, later, for 100% completion.
This level introduces two enemies and two obstacles:
- Skunks are a generic enemy that move forward in lines. It is best to spin them away, as you will usually take out the lot.
- Man-eating Plants are stationary, but can reach forward and grab you. It is best to spin them away, as you will be harder to hit.
- Rolling Stones are disc-shaped stones that roll back and forth along grooves. Watch the timing, and jump through when it is clear.
- Falling Platforms are platforms that fall shortly after you land on them. They will shake to give you a warning.
If done right, most of this level can be completed with Aku Aku invulnerability. There is no need to complete the level without dying, but you will want to collect the three Tawna tokens:
- The first Tawna token is in the ? box directly after the first rolling stone.
- The second Tawna token is in the ? box shortly after the checkpoint with the wall of boxes, and just before your first double rolling stones.
- The third Tawna token is in the ? box shortly after the Crash box wedged between the two TNT crates.
The first Tawna level is incredibly easy. Just jump the gap to the right and enter the teleporter for your next achievement. Continue on and to the exit teleporter.
Wait... but weren't you kidnapped? (2) Collect 3 Tawna's Tokens and save your game in her Bonus Round
<img width="1097" height="260" alt="Crash waiting for a rolling stone to pass by in 'Jungle Rollers'. | Crash looking ahead at a locked green gem path in 'Jungle Rollers'. | Completion of the Tawna bonus round in 'Jungle Rollers'". src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8039c29d-33d3-46ae-86e4-e8b82ac0e03e" />
Boxes: 26 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Yellow | Bonuses: Tawna
This is the first of two fortress levels. You will be scaling a fortress, moving back and forth and climbing up a series of floors. Remember to spin the vertical platforms, as you climb up; this will temporarily set them in the horizontal position for climbing.
This level introduces two enemies and three obstacles:
- Monkeys will roll along the ground, before stopping to beat their chest. They are only vulnerable to s1when they are standing still.
- Natives will run at you with shields, and knock you back. You can jump on top of them to make them raise their shield, at which point you can bounce on them or spin them away.
- Spiked Pillars are pillars covered in spikes that will periodically stick out. They will shake before sticking out.
- Moss-Covered Platforms have green moss on them; you will automatically slide down them, so push against the slope to stay on top.
- Torches will periodically light on fire. They are often bouncy when extinguished.
There is nothing to do but get to the end of this level; so make your way forward to the exit teleporter.
Boxes: 14 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: None
This is the first of two boulder chase levels. You will be constantly chased by rolling boulders; they are slightly faster than you, so keep moving towards the camera. You will not be able to backtrack, so restart the level if you miss any boxes.
This level introduces two obstacles:
- Wooden Fences run along the entire ground, and will stop you entirely; so need to be jumped over. If one stops you even for a moment, it can be fatal.
- Wooden Barricades stick out of the ground at certain spots, and will completely block movement. You can spin them over, but this can still cost you time, so it is best to run around them.
You generally want to keep to the centre, unless veering off to collect boxes. A trail of Wumpa fruit will take you safely around your first set of wooden barriers; however, make sure to veer to the left after the second barrier to grab a box that is out of the way.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Indiana Bandicoot (5) Destroy all the boxes from Boulders and collect the gem
Boxes: 14 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Orange | Bonuses: Tawna
This is the first of two water levels. Make sure you do not touch the water - Crash can not swim, and Aku Aku can not protect from it, either!
This level introduces three enemies:
- Fish will jump back and forth in the water. You can spin them away as you jump through.
- Green-Leaved Venus Fly Traps will snap shut shortly after you land on them. Make sure to jump off as soon as you land on one.
- Grey-Leaved Venus Fly Traps will periodically snap shut. Just watch and time your jumping, accordingly.
We just need to get to the end of this level, for now. Be careful with short platforms, as your momentum can still see you running off, especially if you are spinning as you land.
Papu Papu is our first boss fight. Bosses start with a health bar displaying their name, and the amount of hits they can take (represented by the number of pieces in the bar). Each boss has a unique way to defeat them.
Normally, Papu Papu will swing his staff around while we jump over it. He would eventually smash it on the ground, leaving him open to being jumped on. However, we don't have time for that - we need to beat him in 15 seconds.
As soon as the fight starts, Papu Papu will bring his staff down. Immediately jump onto his chair (for height) and onto him. If you miss this one, or lose a mask, exit to the map and restart the fight.
As soon as he starts spinning his staff, jump on him, again. You can do this without needing the height; if you get hit, just jump on him again while you have invulnerability frames. Do this twice to win the fight.
The bonus achievement should pop once you beat Papu Papu; with the main achievement popping when you return to the map. If you miss the bonus achievement, just try again until you get it.
Putting Papu Papu to sleep (5) Defeat Papu Papu in less than 15 seconds (Return to the map if fail and don't pause)
Papu Popped (10) Defeat Papu Papu
Boxes: 46 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Blue | Bonuses: Tawna + Brio
This is the second level with the rolling stones; and they get more complex. Just take your time and you will have no trouble. This is also the first level with the Brio bonuses - they are generally more difficult, and provide no save point, but will usually give more lives.
Once again, there is no need to complete this level without dying, but you will want to collect the three Brio tokens:
- The first token is above the bounce box when you reach the first arrow box. Make sure you do not break the arrow box, early.
- The second token is in the ? box on the back-right of the set of nine you come across, mixed in with TNT boxes. Make sure you grab the token before setting the TNT off.
- When you reach the exit teleporter, this token will be in the ? box on the right,
When you enter the Brio bonus, you will see four TNT boxes ahead of you. High bounce off the first TNT box onto the third, and again to the next platform.
You will now see stacks of TNT boxes, regular boxes and steel boxes. Jump and spin the first regular box to start the count down; you can jump on top of the first steel box, and jump over the rest of the stack.
Ahead there will be three Crash boxes floating in the air; just bounce off one to the end to earn your next achievement, and exit the level.
What are you doing in my secret mine? (5) Collect 3 Brio's Tokens and reach at the end of his Bonus Round
<img width="1097" height="520" alt="Crash collecting the first Brio token above an arrow box in 'Rolling Stones'. | The second Brio token, sitting amongst some TNT boxes in 'Rolling Stones'. | Crash has collected all three Brio tokens in 'Rolling Stones". | Crash bouncing over the first set of TNT boxes in the first Brio bonus. | Crash jumping over the wall of TNT boxes in the first Brio bonus. | Crash has reached the end of the Brio bonus in 'Rolling Stones'." src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/d7090604-ac60-4032-8bdd-795135c5bc70" />
Boxes: 24 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: None
This is the first hog-riding level. You will be constantly racing forward on a hog, and unable to backtrack. As a result, if you miss any boxes, you should exit to the map and retry the level.
This level introduces one enemy and three obstacles:
- Natives also return, but move side to side in your path. Steer around them.
- Spiked Pillars make a return, but are stationary. Jump over or steer around them.
- Large Drums will appear before large pits; you will need to jump on them to bounce across the gaps.
- Hogs on Spits will rotate around in place; you will either need to jump over or ride under them, depending on their position.
The challenge in this level is hitting all of the boxes as you move forward. Most will be placed on alternate sides; so make sure you are ready to veer to the opposite side when you see them coming.
Towards the end, you will come to a series of boxes alternating to the left and right. Make sure to steer hard to the right, at the end; and make sure you collect all of them.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
I don't like where this is going... (10) Destroy all the boxes from Hog Wild and collect the gem
Boxes: 42 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Red | Bonuses: Tawna
This is the second fortress level. Rather than add new enemies or obstacles, it just combines them for more difficult challenge. Luckily, just need to get to the end of the level, for now.
As soon as you reach the third storey, you can bounce on a turtle to get behind the wall. There is a secret passage that will help you skip some of the level.
When you come to the line of three torches, you will need to jump up on top of the wall at the second torch, as they will reignite before you can make it all the way through.
When you complete this level, you will also move on to the second island.
Boxes: 15 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Tawna
This is the second water level, but contains no new enemies or obstacles.
The only hidden boxes can be a bit tricky, and require backtracking. To start with, you will find a ! box that you will need to trigger after crossing a bridge of lily pads. Wait for the lily pads to raise back out of the water, and run back to the slippery log.
Directly below the waterfall, you will see some new lily pads, and two boxes to the left. Jump down from half way down the log, as jumping from the top can lead to you clipping through the platforms. Trigger the TNT box, and quickly bounce back up to the slippery log.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Gulp, Hulp (10) Destroy all the boxes from Up The Creek and collect the gem
Ripper Roo is our second boss fight. Normally, you will need to avoid him as he jumps between platforms, and time TNT explosions with his landing on neighboring platforms. However, once again we need to go fast, as we will need to defeat him in 40 seconds.
Luckily, we can cheese the first two hits by immediately setting off the TNTs and tanking the explosions with our masks, and Ripper Roo's positions will always be the same:
- For the first hit, get to the centre-left platform, and spin the TNT as it floats between you and Ripper Roo.
- For the second hit, wait for Ripper Roo to jump from the middle platform to the platform you are on, and jump across to the middle to avoid him. Spin the TNT that floats down on the right once he is on the platform to your right.
- For the third hit, we need to do this the old fashioned way. Luckily, Ripper Roo will not jump to the middle platform, so stay where you are. Wait for Ripper Roo to jump from the platform above you to the platform on your right, and as he does this, jump on the TNT to your left. As Ripper Roo leaves the platform on the right, jump across to it to avoid the blast.
The bonus achievement should pop once you beat Ripper Roo; with the main achievement popping when you return to the map. If you miss the bonus achievement, just try again until you get it.
Jack the Ripper (5) Defeat Ripper Roo in under 40 seconds
Ripper Ruined (10) Defeat Ripper Roo
Boxes: 31 | Gem Colour: Green | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Tawna + Brio
This will be your first coloured gem unlock; but be warned - the level is especially tricky. Just take your time as you make your way through, especially when dealing with the bats.
This level introduces four enemies and three obstacles:
- Green Leaping Lizards will jump between several spots. Spinning them on the ground will knock you back.
- Red Leaping Lizards behave similar to the green variety, except they will actively move towards you.
- Bats will fly between two spots. Avoid them. They will stop appearing if you spin away the bats hanging on either side of their paths.
- Iguanas will move back and forth along platforms. Spinning them will knock you back.
- Pushing Walls will push out from the wall, knocking you off the level. Watch for the patterns before tackling groups.
- Alternating Platforms will pop in and out of the wall in a sequence. Most just require you immediately hopping to the next in the pattern; but some will create bridges that you need to run across.
- Swinging Platforms look like a bridge made up of disconnected pieces; however, they will quickly swing and knock you off. Either jump as soon as you land, or stick to the middle piece where it is stable.
To start with, you will need to get behind the wall of steel boxes to your left. The only way to do this is to towards the camera and back around; you will need to do this both ways, since you need to break the arrow box.
As you keep moving, be sure to grab the boxes hidden in the alcoves in the wall. There is an alcove after your first set of bats with a bounce box - high bounce off it to reach a ! box hidden above, as it will reveal a box, ahead.
When climbing up the first set of alternating platforms, be sure to jump down onto the ! box to the left. This will reveal a series of boxes in the background, at the top.
There are two boxes in the second half of the level that can not be reached without jumping on leaping lizards. It is easiest to wait for the lizards to land directly underneath them.
Once you unlock the green gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Escape from the Temple (10) Destroy all the boxes from The Lost City and collect the gem
Now that you have the green gem, you can return to "Jungle Rollers" and unlock the respective gem at any time.
Boxes: 67 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: None
This is our first level where we can earn the missable achievement; as such, we are going to avoid as many boxes as we can. Try to favour jumping on enemies, so as to not spin them into nearby boxes.
This level introduces two enemies and two obstacles:
- Spiders will drop down from the ceiling, and are sometimes needed for platforming.
- Snakes will appear out of holes in the ground, and act in the same way as the man-eating plants from earlier.
- Spear Traps are archways filled with spears that will periodically stick out.
- Crushing Walls are sections of wall that slam shut.
Just take it slow, and try not to hit any boxes. You can also avoid the checkpoints, since we still need to beat the level without dying to reach the completion screen.
Once you complete the level with 50 missed boxes, you will earn the next achievement.
Bandicoot Abuse (25) Complete a stage missing at least 50 boxes at the results screen
This guide leaves the clear gem from this level until later, but there is nothing to stop you from earning it, now.
Boxes: 33 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Red | Bonuses: Tawna
This is the first of two bridge levels, and will seriously test your platforming skills. Crash has to make it across a bridge that is falling apart. If you gotta go fast, you can run along the rope hand rails; but it is easy to fall off.
This level introduces one enemy, and the bridge is made up of four different planks with most acting as obstacles:
- Hogs will run back and forth along sections of the bridge, and are completely invulnerable. Avoid at all costs.
-
The Bridge is made up of four types of planks:
- Light-Brown Planks are solid, and are safe to step on.
- Dark-Brown Planks can only be stepped on for a moment before they fall. Either run across these quickly, or jump off as soon as you land.
- Cracked Planks will fall the moment you step on them. Avoid them.
- Light-Blue Planks are icy; and act like slippery platforms. Jump off quickly or you will fall off.
Towards the end, you will need to high bounce off turtle shells to make the jumps. Make sure you do not spin the shells away, or you will be forced to balance along the rope hand rails. If you set up a shell too far from where you need it to be, just wait and the turtle will resume walking around.
Boxes: 35 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Purple | Bonuses: None
The second boulder chase level adds more complexity to the obstacles; but you do not need to collect all of the boxes or beat it without dying, for now.
You only have single Wumpa fruits to help guide you through the wooden barriers; but if you follow them, you will still find your way through without much difficulty. Just keep pushing forward until you hit the exit teleporter.
Boxes: 50 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Tawna + Cortex
This level contains the first Cortex bonus, which gives us the key for "Whole Hog". It also contains enough boxes to unlock Bandicoot Abuse, but since you need to leave every single box unbroken, we recommend completing this on one of the other two levels.
As long as you ensure you grab the boxes in the alcoves in the wall, the hidden boxes will come naturally when collecting the Cortex tokens:
- The first token is in a ? box that is initially outlined in the background on the second storey. To the right, you will see the ! box in the sky. Lure the red leaping lizard closer from the right, and use it to bounce up and trigger the ! box.
- The second token is in the air above a group of pushing walls. As soon as you pass the group of four pushing walls, high bounce off the box in the middle to jump over the next group and reach the token.
- The third token is in a ? box that is hidden in the background. After the two sets of platforms that spin around, you will see a section in the background with a life. Jump across and collect it, and head left to find the box.
The first Cortex level isn't that hard. Just keep moving to the right, jumping to spin and break and boxes that block your path. Do this quickly so you do not get caught in the TNT box explosions. Before you exit, make sure you grab the key before jumping into the teleporter. This will unlock your next achievement.
Cortex's Crazed Contest (5) Find The Key in Sunset Vista
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
The Gem of the Middle (10) Destroy all the boxes from Sunset Vista and collect the gem
You now have the key to access "Whole Hog", which can be accessed by branching off from "Boulder Dash". We will come back to complete this, later, but feel free to complete it at any time.
Koala Kong is our third boss fight. Koala Kong will stay in the background, throwing boulders and TNT boxes at us. Periodically, he will throw a heavy boulder, which we can spin to throw back at him. We need to defeat him without jumping or getting hit for the bonus achievement; if you do either, just exit to the map and try again.
To start with, you want to always keep moving. The boulders are easier to avoid when running left; so try and run left as he throws them, and run back to the right immediately after.
When the heavy boulders come at you, make sure to spin them back when there are no mine carts shielding Koala Kong. They will automatically hit back at him, so there is no need to push them around.
The TNT boxes can drop at slight random; but if you get wedged between them, move towards the camera to walk around them. Hug the walls to avoid the blasts.
The bonus achievement should pop once you beat Koala Kong; with the main achievement popping when you return to the map. If you miss the bonus achievement, just try again until you get it. This also marks the completion of Wumpa Island.
Never Skip Leg Day (5) Defeat Koala Kong without jumping and without taking damage (don't press jump during intro)
Koala Konked (10) Defeat Koala Kong
Boxes: 33 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Tawna + Brio
We are on the last island, now; so levels are about to get harder. As always, the key is patience.
This level introduces three enemies and two obstacles:
- Floating Cameras will hover in the air, and can be spun away or avoided.
- Drones will patrol platforms, and can be spun away or jumped on.
- Spiked Saucers will hover either in place or in a small patrol, and are immune to damage. Avoid them.
- Heated Red Pipes will burn you if you touch them; and need to be jumped over. Blue pipes are harmless.
- Steam Vents will periodically vent steam, but are safe when there is no steam coming out of them.
When you come to a big gap with two spiked saucers floating below, jump down between them. This will lead to a hidden area with boxes.
Make sure to grab the boxes above the red jump pads; including the Crash box on the left side as you use the red jump pads to climb to the exit.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Meavy Hachinery (10) Destroy all the boxes from Heavy Machinery and collect the gem
Boxes: 41 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Blue | Bonuses: None
This is the second level to contain branching paths. We don't need to worry about that, yet, since we can not unlock the gem until we have unlocked the blue gem path.
This level introduces one enemy and one obstacle:
- Slim can be found in the full playthrough; you will find him at the end of one of the paths. Take cover as he shoots, and spin him away when he reloads.
- Tesla Coils exchange electricity between each other, and may stand out by themselves or on the ends of pipes. Jump through when they are passive. You can jump over the electricity thrown by the coils on the floor.
Just make your way through to the end of the level; taking the right path at the first fork, and the left path at the second.
Boxes: 44 | Gem Colour: Orange | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Tawna
This level is sort of unique, as it mixes the enemies and obstacles of "Castle Machinery" with the low-light usually seen in the dark aztec levels. It also contains the orange gem. There are no new enemies or obstacles.
The first difficult box you will come to will be a ? box wedged between a steel arrow box and a TNT box. If you do not have a mask to tank the hit, hit jump and spin at the same time and you should break the ? box without breaking the TNT box. Jump back to the previous platform to avoid the blast.
Make sure to trigger the ! box. If you are quick, you can make it across to the next platform; but it is safest to stand on the ! box and wait for the falling platform to reappear.
The ! box will trigger a bridge of boxes to appear, leading to a large falling platform. You have more time, but it won't last forever, so make sure to grab every box as quickly as you can.
Once you unlock the orange gem, you will earn your next achievement.
I am watching everything that you are doing (10) Destroy all the boxes from Generator Room and collect the gem
Now that you have the orange gem, you can return to "Upstream" and unlock the respective gem at any time.
Boxes: 26 | Gem Colour: Blue | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Tawna
This is another unique level, where you will be moving forward trying to avoid the barrels that are being thrown at you.
This level introduces one enemy, which in turn will introduce two obstacles:
-
Pinstripe's Minions will stand at the end of long sections and throw barrels at you. When you reach them you will need to spin them away.
- Rolling Barrels can be easily jumped over, and are light in colour. Most minions only throw these barrels.
- Bouncing Barrels will bounce along their path. You need to avoid them appropriately. They are darker than the regular barrels, and are only thrown by minions towards the end of the level.
There are no hidden boxes; the challenge for this gem is simply getting to the end without dying. The bouncing barrels at the end should be the only real challenge. Use the sides to avoid them, where possible, and watch for their patterns so you know the safe spots to stand.
Once you unlock the blue gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Donkey Kong 3D (10) Destroy all the boxes from Toxic Waste and collect the gem
Now that you have the blue gem, you can return to "Rolling Stones" and "Cortex Power", and unlock the respective gems at any time.
Pinstripe Potoroo is our fourth boss fight, and the last before the two doctors. Throughout the fight, Pinstripe Potoroo will shoot his tommy gun, and we will need to take cover. When we have openings, we need to run up and perform a spin attack.
The bonus achievement requires us to do this without letting him charge up his gun more than three times in the second phase. There is debate in the comments on what this exactly means; but either way, it appears to be the easiest bonus challenge to complete.
When starting, stay still and Crash will take cover behind the chair. When Pinstripe Potoroo starts moving, run up and hit him with a spin attack, before running behind the opposite chair for more cover. Do this three times.
After the third hit, he will jump up to the table instead of running between the chairs. Just wait and his gun will jam, giving you an opening.
For the last hit point, nothing much changes; except his gun will jam after he takes his shits on the table.
The bonus achievement should pop once you beat Pinstripe Potoroo; with the main achievement popping when you return to the map. If you miss the bonus achievement, just try again until you get it.
No guns in my E Rated game (5) Defeat Pinstripe Potoroo without letting him charge his gun more than 3 times in the 2nd phase (Return to the map if fail)
Pinstripe Patooey (10) Defeat Pinstripe Potoroo
Boxes: 18 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Tawna
This is the second bridge level. It adds no new enemies or obstacles, but the general platforming is far less forgiving.
At the very start, there is a bridge leading to four hidden boxes. The bridge is made up of sets of two planks, before you have to jump to the next set; however, the planks are invisible until you stand on them. Walk out to the second plank, and perform a full jump to the next set. Wash and repeat until you hit the boxes.
When you reach the checkpoint with the TNT, ? and steel boxes stacked on the left, you may have noticed a second ? box high up in the sky. There are a couple of tricky ways to reach this; but the easiest way is to break the ? box on top of the TNT box, than stand on the steel box and jump up to the second ? box before the TNT box explodes.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Javali's Revenge (10) Destroy all the boxes from The High Road and collect the gem
Boxes: 31 | Gem Colour: Red | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Brio
Get ready for the hardest level in the entire game. If it makes you feel any better, they significantly reduced the difficulty. Don't believe us? Don't worry - we will show you how to play the cut "Stormy Ascent" version, at the end.
This level introduces three enemies, and two obstacles:
- Creepy Hands stick out of grates at the floor, and swipe at the ground. Just spin them away.
- Eagles will hover in the air, and often need to be bounced on to reach platforms.
- Mad Scientists will periodically throw explosive beakers at the ground. Run up and spin them between throws.
- Spikes stick out from the walls, so make sure to avoid them.
- Timed Staircases will periodically revert to slopes, often sliding you down into traps. Time your jumps - you can not jump off once you hit the slope.
Just be patient as you work your way through this level, and make sure to duck into each alcove for the relevant boxes. Some alcoves will be in the middle of a series of rotating platforms; it is easiest to fall into these alcoves, and fall out onto another platform.
While the spikes do hurt you, some of them block falls. If you have a mask, they may actually save you from dying, but be sure to jump off before the invulnerability frames end.
Once you unlock the red gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Rainy Towers (10) Destroy all the boxes from Slippery Climb and collect the gem
Now that you have the green gem, you can return to "Native Fortress" and "Road to Nowhere", and unlock the respective gems at any time.
Boxes: 15 | Gem Colour: Purple | Gem Requirements: Yellow | Bonuses: None
This is the first dark level. The level, itself, has no actual light source. Instead, you must use masks as your source of light.
This level introduces one new enemy, and one new obstacle:
- Rats will scurry out of the shadows in lines. Spin them away, as this usually deals with the line.
- Swinging Blades will block your path; just make sure to jump through when they have swung to the side.
Just make sure to keep your momentum going as you make your way through, as masks only provide temporary light. If you get stuck without a light source, you can always try and fumble your way to the next mask.
Candles generally mark pits; often just after a platform. Moving platforms, boxes and rats can generally be made out even in darkness - where there is rats or boxes, there is floor.
The exit platform provides its own light source; so when you get close, you won't need the masks.
Boxes: 65 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Blue | Bonuses: Tawna + Cortex
This level will probably contain your first coloured gem path; as it requires the blue gem that you should have unlocked, earlier. It also contains the second Cortex bonus to unlock "Fumbling in the Dark", and enough boxes to reasonably unlock Bandicoot Abuse (if you had not already done so in "Temple Ruins").
When you follow the blue gem path, you will first come to a series of boxes including two steel boxes. There is a box hidden above the steel boxes; make sure to jump up from them and break it.
You will find the Cortex tokens in the following locations:
- The first Cortex token is in a ? box stacked underneath a regular box and a TNT box, directly before your first checkpoint.
- The second Cortex token is in a ? box in a stack with a TNT, shortly after you return from the blue gem path and pass a series of spear traps. There is a snake just before you reach them; do not spin the snake or you risk hitting the TNT and blowing the token away.
- The third Cortex token is in a ? box you will find along a hidden path shortly after the second token. Look for the two Wumpa fruit floating to the left of a falling platform, and run along in this direction to the left to reach a hidden area.
This Cortex bonus is far trickier than the first. You will need to bounce along some boxes to a TNT above a ! box. Trigger the countdown, and when it nears the end, start high bouncing on the boxes to the right to give the boxes under you time to appear. For the second bridge, quickly bounce along the TNT boxes to the end. Before you exit, make sure you grab the key before jumping into the teleporter. This will unlock your next achievement.
Cortex's Terrifying Trial (5) Find The Key in Jaws Of Darkness
Once you reach the end of the hidden area, head right and another hidden bridge will take you back to the level.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Toasty (10) Destroy all the boxes from Jaws Of Darkness and collect the gem
You now have the key to access "Fumbling in the Dark", which can be accessed by branching off from "Lights Out". We will come back to complete this, later, but feel free to complete it at any time.
Boxes: 24 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Green (Skip) | Bonuses: None
This level is unique in that the gem path only acts as a shortcut. In order to provide more variety during the backtrack, we are going to take it. Take the green gem path as soon as you enter the level, and it will take you straight to the exit.
Nitrus Brio is our penultimate boss fight. This fight consists of two phases, and to unlock the bonus achievement, you need to defeat him without taking any hits of damage and without pressing the up button. If you are using an analog controller, this might be a good time to use the directional pad.
To start with, you want to stand to the side. If you stand closer to Brio, he will hold his arms up and not do anything. He will start by throwing down a green beaker, which will turn into a blob. Just jump on it, and it will damage Brio.
Avoid the explosive pink beaker Brio throws, and than continue with dispatching two more green blobs. Brio will throw three more explosive pink beakers, followed be three green blob beakers. Continue as normal, avoiding the explosives, and jumping on the blobs.
Brio will finish his first phase by throwing a bunch of pink beakers; so quickly run back and forth to avoid them. When he stops, he will down one of them, and turn into a hulking monster.
Start moving towards the camera. As Brio smashes his way towards you, look out for a falling block. Jump onto the block, and jump as Brio nears so that you land on his head.
You will be thrown all the way forward, and another block will fall down. Repeat the process two more times to defeat Brio.
The bonus achievement should pop once you beat Nitrus Brio; with the main achievement popping when you return to the map. If you miss the bonus achievement, just try again until you get it
Crashed and Smashed (5) Defeat Nitrus Brio without pressing up and without taking damage (Return to the map if fail)
Nitrus Broken (10) Defeat Nitrus Brio
Boxes: 24 | Gem Colour: Yellow | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: Tawna
This is the last normal level before the end. This level has a unique gimmick; there are ! boxes along your path that will trigger doors and bridges. These ! boxes let you trigger them again, if the door closes or the bridge withdraws.
This level introduces two new enemies:
- Yellow Blobs will periodically spawn and chase you. Spin them in the air or jump on them to defeat them.
- Shock Scientists will periodically shock themselves. You need to spin them when they are not shocking, and push them back into the pit behind them.
This level contains no hidden boxes; but it can be tricky between all of the obstacles. Again, just be patient, and look ahead to work out the timing.
Be careful when you come to the two sets of five boxes. The first set will have a ! box in the middle; but the second set has a TNT box in the middle - so don't spin at it.
This is your last chance to save; so make sure you complete the bonus Tawna round and save your progress. The only challenge in this bonus is the bounce boxes hovering over a fall - there is no reason to need to break them, so just bounce straight through.
You will come to a set of TNT boxes covering a ! box, with a timed bridge just before. It can be easy to get stuck too close to the TNT when you set them off; just remember that if the bridge is open, you can just jump to one of the sides.
Once you unlock the yellow gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Tawna! Wait for me! (10) Destroy all the boxes from The Lab and collect the gem
Now that you have the yellow gem, you can return to The Great Gate and Lights Out, and unlock the respective gems at any time. Once you have the purple gem from Lights Out, you can return to Boulder Dash and unlock the respective gem at any time.
This level only serves to provide passage to the secret ending; but you need to unlock all 26 gems, so we will need to come back. For now, just skip straight through to the teleporter, and get ready for the final boss.
Dr. Neo Cortex is our last boss. He will stay in the background and shoot rays at you; all you need to do is avoid them and spin the green ones back at him. The bonus achievement for this fight is for defeating Cortex without being hit.
Throughout the fight, Cortex is going to hover Infront of Crash and shoot various rays at him.
- Pink Rays are shot directly at Crash. Just keep moving around to avoid them.
- Blue Rays will move across the screen, sometimes while moving up and down. Plot their path to avoid them.
- Green Rays will be shot at specific spots, and when spun, will combine into a counter attack that will damage Cortex.
There really isn't much else to say about this fight. Once you get the hang of his attacks, he is not hard to avoid. The green blasts require different amounts of charge per hit phase, but will stay charged until you collect enough; he only shoots green ray blasts for the last hit phase.
Once you defeat Cortex, the ending will play. Both achievements should pop at the same time; once they do, you can watch the credits, or exit back to the menu. Either way, that is where the game is heading.
Darn you, Crash Bandicoot! (10) Defeat Dr. Neo Cortex without taking damage (Return to the map if fail)
Cortex N. Capacitated (25) Defeat Dr. Neo Cortex and Save Tawna
In case you have not recently saved, the following password will take you back to just before "The Great Hall":
![]()
At this point, we are almost ready to revisit every level and collect the remaining gems. This guide will be starting at the start, and progressing back to the end, but feel free to complete the levels in any order. Just make sure you complete "Lights Out", first, as this level contains our last coloured gem.
Boxes: 15 | Gem Colour: Purple | Gem Requirements: Yellow | Bonuses: None
Nothing really changes, going through this level. Move quickly; break all the boxes; and throw up the brightness if you want to cheese the darkness.
Once you hit the yellow gem path, it will take you up into one of the castle turrets. Just grab the extra Crash boxes, and exit the level.
Once you unlock the purple gem, you will earn your next achievement.
I Can't See Anything! (10) Destroy all the boxes from Lights Out and collect the gem
Boxes: 38 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Green | Bonuses: Tawna
There shouldn't be anything to this level. It is the second level of the game, and fairly easy. The only hidden boxes are behind the green gem path.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Jungle Japes (10) Destroy all the boxes from Jungle Rollers and collect the gem
Boxes: 26 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Yellow | Bonuses: Tawna
Another simple level. This time, you will be able to follow the yellow gem path over the first teleporter and make your way up to an additional story.
Two arrow boxes let you jump behind the wall; the second leads to a passage with a hidden Crash box. Make sure you return to break the arrow box.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Shield Attacker (10) Destroy all the boxes from The Great Gate and collect the gem
Boxes: 14 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Orange | Bonuses: Tawna
Starting off, make sure you head towards the camera for a hidden Witch Doctor box.
You will eventually come to an orange gem path leading behind a slippery trunk. Make sure to jump across the first few gems, as you can fall into the water. The platform at the base of the waterfall contains a hidden Crash box.
When you reach the first exit teleporter, you will see another orange gem path. Do not jump across the first two; wait on the first gem and it will move across to the second.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
I'm not Blue, but I can't swim either (10) Destroy all the boxes from Upstream and collect the gem
Boxes: 46 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Blue | Bonuses: Tawna + Brio
There are no hidden boxes in this level, outside of the boxes at the end of the blue gem path. When you hit the blue gem, take it down to the underground and break the six boxes, before returning and carrying on with the level.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Paper Crash (5) Destroy all the boxes from Rolling Stones and collect the gem
Boxes: 42 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Red | Bonuses: Tawna
Remember to use the sections behind the wall to skip the first part of the first story, and to later avoid the second torch.
When you reach the coloured gem path, you can walk on the clouds. Continue left and upwards to a stack of boxes.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
I'm out of here (10) Destroy all the boxes from Native Fortress and collect the gem
Boxes: 67 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: None
Despite the large number of boxes, there is only one hidden section. After some crushing walls and a rising platform, you will notice two Wumpa fruit leading off to the left. Follow this path, and a bridge of boxes will appear under you as you walk on them. Break the boxes at the end, than make sure you break the three regular boxes along the bridge as you return.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
The Lost Ruins (10) Destroy all the boxes from Temple Ruins and collect the gem
Boxes: 33 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Red | Bonuses: Tawna
By now, this level should be fairly straight forward. The red gem path, however, has to be completed in a specific way.
Once you reach the end of the red gem path, hit the boxes in this order:
- Hit the TNT box on the far right from underneath, and let the explosion trigger the ! box above it.
- This will cause a regular box to appear on the far left; bounce off of it and spin to trigger the ! box above the TNT box.
- This will cause a regular box to appear in to your right; high bounce off of it to land on the cluster of hovering steel boxes - the one in the centre is a ! box. Jump on it.
- This will cause a stack of boxes to appear in the background to the right; as well as a final TNT box to the left.
There will be another red gem path at the exit teleporter; this will take you directly behind the teleporter. There is a single invisible plank directly front of you; jump off it to land on another two planks, and keep going until you reach another group of boxes.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
That sign won't stop me, because I can't read (10) Destroy all the boxes from Road To Nowhere and collect the gem
Boxes: 24 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: None
This is the first bonus level; you can branch off to it from "Boulder Dash" after unlocking the key from the Cortex bonus in "Sunset Vista". This level is also another hog riding level, so if you miss any boxes, you will need to exit to the map and restart the level.
This level requires a lot more darting left and right to collect all of the boxes; but once you get the hang of the movement, it is not that hard. Also remember to hold jump when bouncing for higher jumps - this is required at least once when bouncing on the drums.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Here We Go Again... (25) Destroy all the boxes from Whole Hog and collect the gem
Boxes: 35 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Purple | Bonuses: None
As the second boulder chase level, this level has no hidden boxes apart from those found during the coloured gem path. You will find this at the end of the level; take the purple gem underground, and travel to the end to break the remaining boxes and exit the level.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
AHHHHHH I thought I got rid of you! (10) Destroy all the boxes from Boulder Dash and collect the gem
Boxes: 41 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Blue | Bonuses: None
This level contains some split paths; so there will be backtracking to break all of the boxes.
At the first split, take the right path. At the next path, take the right path, again. When you get to the end, break all of the boxes (including the ! box) and return to the last split. Take the left path, and you will quickly come to the end of another split. Return up the other path.
When you reach the start of another split, take the blue gem down the left path. You can jump on a single TNT box in the box bridge to take out the entire lot; just don't run across with mask invulnerability - the TNT boxes will immediately explode, and you will fall into the waste.
When you get to the end of the coloured gem path, slowly make your way back up the path to the right. When you hit the checkpoint, you can turn around and resume moving forward towards the exit.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Cortex Got The Power! (10) Destroy all the boxes from Cortex Power and collect the gem
Boxes: 18 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: None | Bonuses: None
This is the second bonus level; you can branch off to it from "Lights Out" after unlocking the key from the Cortex bonus in "Jaws of Darkness". This level is another darkness level; so keep your masks active, or turn the brightness up.
As soon as you grab the first mask, head towards the camera for a secret area. There is no floor; so you will have to stick to the sides, where you can stand. Head towards the camera on one side, than return on the other to ensure you have mask light to continue.
There are no more hidden boxes, heading forward; just tricky platforming. You should have had plenty of practice by now, so hopefully it is not too difficult. You will have to use some spiders as bounce platforms; just make sure to high bounce off them for clearance.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
Aku Aku Light's Battery is not that high (25) Destroy all the boxes from Fumbling In The Dark and collect the gem
Boxes: 24 | Gem Colour: Clear | Gem Requirements: Green (Skip) | Bonuses: None
Here we are at the final level. You may have decided to do this, earlier; but I decided to leave it until the end to give more variety with the previous backtracking. It should go without saying; but to start with, we want to head down the hole to the right.
There are no hidden boxes in this level; but there are a bunch that might still provide some issues. You will eventually come across a bridge of regular boxes, with three Crash boxes underneath. The easiest way to do this one is to break each set of three regular boxes, before high bouncing on the Crash box below it to bounce back up onto the next lot.
Once you unlock the clear gem, you will earn your next achievement.
So Close... but yet so far... (10) Destroy all the boxes from Castle Machinery and collect the gem
Once you enter this level, take the gem path to the right and onwards until you reach the red curtain. Walk through it, and it will open to reveal Tawna on an eagle. Walk up to her, and the last achievement will unlock.
A Shining Ending (25) Collect all the 26 Gems and finish the game with the secret ending
Congratulations! You have beaten Crash Bandicoot with 100% completion. As your reward, a secret cutscene will play telling us what happens to all of the characters at the end of the game.
Want more Crash Bandicoot, and looking for what to do next? Well.. there are plenty of options:
-
There is a secret level still hidden within the game files that was cut from the original game. "Stormy Ascent" is a much more difficult version of "Slippery Climb" - to access it, you need to have the relevant gameshark cheat enabled when the game restarts.
- NTSC-U: D0011DB2 3404 | 80011DB0 0022
- NSTC-J: D0011DFA 3404 | 80011DF8 0022
- PAL: D0011DD2 3404 | 80011DD0 0022
- You won't see them, but this level does have bonus tokens. There is no actual bonus round, so the game will freeze when you collect the third token.
-
There are many more games in the Crash Bandicoot Series - the next one in the series is Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. It is worth noting that the next one reduces the difficulty quite a bit - no more deathless runs! That is.. unless you are going for the achievements.
-
There are actually some next-gen Crash Bandicoot games that have come out more recently!
- Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a complete remake of the original three titles. There are a few minor changes - they actually took away the deathless requirement for clear gems.
- Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a remaster of the racing spin-offs, including the entire first game and content from the other two.
- Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is a brand new game, and is arguably one of the largest and hardest in the series.

The following passwords have been collected by completing the game as per the above guide. They can be entered from the main menu in lieu of using memory cards to save. Simply select 'Password' from the main menu and enter the code. Press left to delete buttons.
Please note that the passwords can place you a bit more randomly than you would expect. For example, bonus round passwords generally complete the levels they were found in, and some gem passwords (such as Slippery Climb) will reward the gem for that level; but will not count the level as completed.
