Bomber Man World (Arcade) - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki

Bomber Man World (aka Atomic Punk 2, aka New Atomic Punk: Global Quest, aka New Dynablaster: Global Quest, Bomberman games had a naming problem for a while) is a 1992 arcade game and the second Bomberman game to be released in the arcades. Despite the name(s), this game bears no relation to the Game Boy Atomic Punk nor does it have anything to do with the PS1 game called Bomberman World. Like its direct arcade predecessor, this game was developed by Irem instead of Hudson Soft and the formerโs approach to arcade game design comes through pretty clearly. The action is faster than the average Bomberman game, enemies are far more threatening than anything you'll see in the Super Bomberman series, and a strict time limit on each level means you need to go in with a specific approach if you don't want to credit feed. As someone who has played dozens of Bomberman games (not on RAโฆ yet), I can confidently say that this is one of the tougher ones! That's why I wanted to write this guide; since information on this game on the internet is somewhat sparse, I think offering some strategies and advice will help make this mastery more approachable while also making the game itself a bit less frustrating. I wouldn't recommend this game as anyone's first Bomberman mastery, but if you can pull it off, you'll be ready for most of the series hub!

In case you haven't played a Bomberman game before, the idea is simple. Using your bombs, you need to eliminate every single enemy to advance to the next level. When you place a bomb down, it'll pulsate for a couple of seconds and then explode in a plus-shape, destroying anything it touches except for the hard blocks that litter each arena. The catch, though, is twofold: first, you'll need to break soft blocks to find power-ups that improve your firepower (the distance the explosion goes), movement speed, and bomb capacity (how many bombs you can put down at once) so you can actually defeat said enemies. Then, once you're drunk with power, you need to make sure not to blow yourself up! While Bomber Man World is fundamentally the same idea, it shakes up the formula in some ways. Power-ups don't carry over between levels, so you'll have to take a moment to grab some in each one. However, power-ups that change your bomb like the new Fission Bomb and the Remote Control Bomb do carry over if you happen to have them. These power-ups are limited by a small number of uses, but players with a plan can bring them into boss fights, making things a lot easier.
Bomber Man World is broken up into six areas with six levels each and the final level of each area is always a boss fight. Before the boss fight, you'll get to do a bonus stage, which offers a chance to grab lots of points, power-ups, and even a 1UP if you're efficient enough. The amount of time you're given in these bonus stages is dependent on finding the letters that spell โBONUSโ in the preceding five levels, so it's essential for the 1CC that you know where all these are hidden. Later on in this guide, I'll be providing strategies for the toughest levels and noting the general spots where these letters are found as well as a good approach to clearing out the bonus stages since doing so is necessary for an achievement.
Note
To make sure you're eligible for all achievements, keep the game on the default settings in your emulator of choice.
Tip
Like Super Bomberman, you begin each level with a bit of invincibility, though it's not as generous as in that game. You can use this period to place a bomb, let it blow up on you, then keep tapping the bomb button to chain explosions while you move around. You usually have enough time to eliminate a couple of enemies near the start and this will be a huge help throughout.
Tip
If you don't think you'll beat a stage in time, it's better to self-destruct than let time run out. Dying resets the timer, but running out of time will take a life and force you to restart the level from scratch, which you do not want to happen.
Tip
Fission Bombs are more trouble than they're worth, honestly, and I recommend ignoring/destroying any you come across once you've gotten the one achievement related to them. They're hypothetically useful against more mobile enemies, but I can guarantee you'll end up hitting yourself with them more often than not.
Tip
At the start of every boss fight, always prioritize the speed ups. Some of their attacks would be unreasonable to dodge without the boost!
Tip
Many achievements in this set can only be attempted once per run. Because of this, I strongly encourage you to use Softcore mode and save states to practice the toughest ones before going for them in Hardcore mode to save yourself a lot of time and stress.
This section covers all of the achievements you'll get just by playing through the game as well as the challenges associated with the bosses.

Complete Area 1 Automatically unlocked after clearing stage 1-6. |
|
Defeat Cyclops Caterpillar without losing a life on default settings The first boss is pretty easy and this achievement will come naturally as you practice for the 1CC. All it does is run around the arena, but as you inflict damage, its segments will break off and run around individually. After grabbing the power-ups, place bombs down a column so that their explosions cover most of the arena. This should take out the segments and the boss after a few goes, but if you have RC bombs, then just time your shots. If the boss or a segment walks into a bomb, it'll turn to get around it, so make sure you don't get killed that way. If you think you're in danger, you can place a bomb on top of where you're standing to block them, then quickly move out of the way afterwards. |
|
Complete Area 2 Automatically unlocked after clearing stage 2-6. |
|
Defeat Chad Sun in under 40 seconds on default settings The easy way to do this is to simply run up to the boss while mashing the bomb button and repeating until you win. You'll die several times, but even so, you'll win within 40 seconds since credit feeding is allowed for this achievement. The standard way to approach this boss would be to get the RC bombs from the bonus stage, then keep your distance and time your explosions in between his attacks (indicated by a flash on his sunglasses) so that you don't hit him while he's invincible. |
|
Complete Area 3 Automatically unlocked after clearing stage 3-6. |
|
Defeat 16 Ton without using more than 5 bombs on default settings Collect all the speed and fire ups, then place a bomb when the boss begins its second jump and it'll get hit by the explosion after it lands. Repeat that five times and you'll get this achievement, but make sure the boss is aligned with your bomb in the same row/column or else the explosion may miss. This is easier to do if you can bring RC bombs into the fight, but they aren't mandatory. This boss's hurt/hitboxes are very jank, so you may have to save state practice this one to develop a consistent rhythm. |
|
Complete Area 4 Automatically unlocked after clearing stage 4-6. |
|
Defeat Alien Mother after eliminating 10 minions on default settings You may get this naturally due to the erratic nature of the minions and the motherโs built-in bomb pass ability. The minions will run around the arena unpredictably until they're hit once, after which they'll chase you aggressively until they're defeated with a second bomb. This achievement is most easily done with credit feeding as needed; keep away from the boss and focus on bombing the endless supply of minions as they come to you. If you're accidentally hitting the mother too much, you could always ignore some of the fire ups to keep your blasts smaller. |
|
Complete Area 5 Automatically unlocked after clearing stage 5-6. |
|
Defeat Flaming Demon Face with all Bomberman's stats at max on default settings This one is simply a matter of collecting all the power-ups at the start of the fight. Just don't blow any up by accident and you're good to go! |
|
Defeat King Bomber and beat the game Automatically unlocked after clearing stage 6-6. - This achievement counts as the win condition for beating the game. |

This section covers the locations of the bonus letters for each stage and an achievement related to clearing a bonus level of your choice. Note that each level has two copies of the same letter, so there's a bit of room for error if one gets destroyed.
Note
In the descriptions for each achievement in this section, I use the walkable rows and columns of the arenas to describe the location of each letter. Levels in this game are made up of 6 rows you can walk through and 9 columns you can walk through, so if I say "the leftmost column", I mean the first column on the left out of the 9 that make up the level, and if I say "the center column", I mean the fifth column from the left.

Collect or destroy all items in a bonus stage Despite being a 10 point achievement, this is one of the most challenging in the set! This can be done in any bonus stage, but I used the first area since it was the quickest to get back to for retries. I also recommend area 1 because you can get the RC bombs from stage 1-4 and bring them into the bonus stage if you're smart about it. Don't grab them in 1-4 unti there's only one enemy left, then use the two medals in stage 1-5 to defeat the enemies while using as few bombs as possible. On my successful attempts, I was able to get into the bonus stage with 3 RC bombs, but I'm pretty confident more is possible. The general approach I used to get this involves placing a bomb where you start (since you're invincible for a few seconds) and then moving diagonally from there, going up and to the right and back down and to the left, repeating to make sure every block is covered. You want to clear the top and bottom halves of the map at an even pace so you don't have to double back to the start towards the end. Your next goal is to find the fire, speed, and bomb ups as quickly as possible, then use those to quickly fill entire rows and columns with bombs, which will clear things out way faster. If items are nearby, it's better to grab them than bomb them with the exception of the skull. At least for the first bonus stage, the RC bombs are located near the top right corner, so you'll want to save those for the end to clinch things out. It's important to note that there are a few blocks that don't have power-ups or items, so a successful clear will leave a few blocks standing. Even with these general strategies and all five letters collected, the timing for this achievement is extremely tight. Keep moving and make sure never to set up bombs in a way where you're forced to wait before you can move again. On my successful attempts at this, I usually had around two seconds left! |

Use 50 Fission Bombs I recommend working on this one during a credit feeding run. If you can, keep your firepower at a low level when possible to reduce the odds of self-destructing. Otherwise, try to get high speed first so you can run as far away as possible after dropping your bombs because dying means losing your current stock of Fission Bombs and you don't want that. Fission Bombs can be found in 1-2, 2-2, 3-1, 4-2, 5-1, 6-2, and all bonus stages. |
|
Use 50 Remote Bombs This is easier than the previous achievement because RC bombs can be blown up at your own pace. Just find them in each level and make sure to use them all without losing any via death. Locations include 1-4, 2-4, 3-2, 4-3, 5-3, 6-5, and all bonus stages. |
|
Defeat 10 enemies using the Super Invincible item To get this, you'll need to snag the power-up with a medal icon and then run into enemies to defeat them. You don't get a ton of time to do this, so you'll want to make sure you can reach as many enemies as possible before grabbing the item. Getting some speed ups beforehand will help a lot, too, and this achievement is also good practice for a strategy you'll want to use during the 1CC. The levels in which you can find the medal include 1-5, 2-5, 4-4, and 5-2. |
|
Score 1,000,000 points or more This will come naturally on your 1CC run, but in general, you earn the most points by defeating multiple enemies at the same time with the same bomb and by clearing levels quickly. You'll also want to grab as many point items in the bonus levels as you can. On a good run, you'll probably hit a million around the end of the fourth area/beginning of the fifth area. Also, fun fact: after blowing up the chicken enemies, you can grab the roasted chicken they leave behind for some extra points! |

This is this game's battle mode and unlike most games in the series, it has a degree of progression to it. You're pitted against three other Bombermen and if you're the last man standing, you move onto the next level, which will have more competent AI behavior than the one before it. This is a barebones take on battle mode, so much so that the only power-ups at all are bomb ups and fire ups. There's also only one arena, though the soft blocks do get rearranged after every round.
Caution
In this mode, you get three chances before you have to put in another credit. After putting in a credit, you'll have to press a button within 10 seconds to confirm your entry and continue. Make sure to do this every time you continue so that you don't get kicked back to the start!

Win 5 times using only one credit in Super Mode on default settings This achievement can be unlocked by winning any five levels in a row within three attempts, but youโll likely only find this reasonable to do within the first five levels. Levels 1 and 2 are free (you can literally stand still and have your opponents take care of themselves), but levels 3-5 will take more effort. The general strategies Iโm going to outline in the next achievement can be applied to this, so please refer to that achievement. |
|
Beat Level 9 in Super Mode on default settings This is arguably harder than the 1CC because the AI in this game is absolutely brutal! The first five levels are reasonable, but once you hit level 6 or 7, the AI really ramps up. Theyโre ruthlessly efficient at trapping you, seem to always know what youโre going to do next, and will always work together to defeat you even though this is supposed to be a free-for-all. The lack of power-up variety is part of what makes this so hard, but with enough patience and persistence, theyโll eventually slip up and youโll win. Below are some general multiplayer strategies you can try to even the odds as much as possible, but keep in mind that none of this is guaranteed because of how stacked things are against you. -Since there arenโt any speed ups, you need to constantly remain on the move and avoid corners so that you donโt get trapped. Conversely, if you can lure them to a corner first, lay 3-4 bombs in a square/rectangle formation to trap them in the corner. -You can also try another common multiplayer strategy in which you walk towards an opponent, place one bomb in front of them, cross through them, and then place another bomb on their other side to trap them, but this is very difficult to do in these particular circumstances. -At the start of each round, pick one opponent to beeline towards and focus on. I would always go right for the Red Bomber and do my best to trap him ASAP. If you can pull off a quick kill, immediately move onto another Bomber and try the same thing, but the AI wonโt always fall for your tricks. The success rate of this also depends on the arrangement of blocks for that given round, so if it doesnโt work out after a bit, disengage to get power-ups. -Make sure to grab power-ups as quickly as possible, but donโt destroy every single block right away. You need several power-ups to stay competitive, but the soft blocks can be helpful for trapping your opponents. -Once all blocks are gone, itโs very difficult to win. If all else fails, you can just try to place several bombs (try to surround them as you do it), get out of the way, and hope for the best. Theyโre going to dodge these almost every time, but they occasionally make mistakes, so itโs better than just giving up. -If time runs out and you get a draw, itโs considered a loss, so if youโre about to run out, you might as well go for broke and try something bold. You never know, it might work! |

Practicing for this achievement is going to make up the bulk of your time with this set. Refer to the Youtube video I linked to in the Basics section for a general overview on how to play the game well, but I will be providing my personal strategies on the trickiest levels below. As for general advice, make sure to get all of the bonus letters, get the 1UPs in each bonus stage, and do your best to bring RC bombs into each boss fight to make them way easier. Make sure to practice the "chain explosion trick" that I mentioned in the Basics section as well since it's going to be necessary for some of these strategies. A couple of extends are awarded for score, but these eventually dry up, so you can't rely on them the whole game.
| Title | Guidance & Insights |
|---|---|
|
Beat the game without using continues on default settings 2-3: Use your invincibility to chain explosions and walk upward. This should eliminate two of the ghosts and reveal an invincibility power-up, which can then be used to leverage this same approach for the rest of the ghosts. If needed, collect some power-ups before grabbing the invincibility to make it easier to clear them out. This approach also works for stage 2-5 since it has two invincibility medals. 3-1: Immediately walk downward, place a bomb in front of the purple enemy, and keep walking past it. Then, go up, blow up the block that's blocking the nearby enemy, grab the speed up, and place a bomb on the same tile. Free the next enemy, place a bomb, and run as far away as possible to the south. Repeat this strategy for the right side as well. In general, the best way to deal with these purple foes is to place a bomb and run like hell since they won't follow you if you're not close. Try to avoid grabbing any fire ups until these enemies are dealt with since that'll make their explosions easier to outrun. You can also use a second bomb to block them, just make sure to get away from said bomb. 3-3: Stay in the middle and focus on collecting power-ups. Once you have enough speed, find the invincibility items and then use the chain explosion trick to chase after the remaining enemies. If you carry over RC bombs from 3-2, you can immediately walk up at the start and set off a bomb to defeat one of the enemies right away. 3-4: If you wait a bit, there's a chance the bombs will take themselves out for you, though there's a chance they can blow up the bonus letter as well. Ideally, the bombs will gain access to the purple enemies and place bombs for them to eat, saving you a lot of trouble. Otherwise, destroy the bombs in the corners first, then free the purple enemies and use the additional space on the left/right sides of the map to get away from them. 3-5: If you're very quick, open up the path to the north and place a bomb in front of the purple enemy. This will take out both of them and you can try this at the bottom as well. This is risky, though, so a safer strategy is to go left or right and take out the bombs first, then once you have some speed, open up and take out the purple enemies. Boss 3: Go left and then counterclockwise to grab most of the power-ups, stopping on the tile that's two spaces left and two spaces down from the very top right corner tile. Once the boss jumps, move down six tiles, then move left 12 tiles while placing a few bombs, and then go back up six tiles to end up on the opposite tile of the one you started at. If you repeat this pattern correctly, the boss won't be able to hit you. 4-2: As soon as the stage starts, place a bomb, walk two tiles to the left, then use the chain explosion trick to kill the two nearby enemies. This should have revealed a fire up and a speed up; quickly place a bomb below the fire up and if done right, this will kill a third enemy. From there, find some more power-ups and place several bombs near them to take them out. Whenever they roll, go into the bottom left/right corner between the two hard blocks (from the very corner, go left/right 1 tile and then up 1 tile) in order to ensure your safety. Note that this is only a safe spot when they're rolling, they can choose to walk into this spot if they want! 4-4: Use the chain explosion trick to walk up and to the right a bit, this should kill the nearby green enemy and one or two of the snowmen. From there, find the medals on in the top left and bottom right corners, then free the green enemies bit by bit and use the medals to sweep them up. Make sure to time this so you free them after they're done rolling to give you as much time as possible. 4-5: Place a bomb, walk two tiles left, then use the chain explosion trick and move downward to go after the two green enemies. Power up and take your time finishing up the rest, keeping your distance while the green enemies roll. 5-1: Destroy the sets of four blocks to your north and south, collect the power-ups, then stick around the top and place a bomb at the three-way intersection. Keep doing this and the enemies should keep walking into the explosions, allowing you to win from safety. Just make sure not to stand right near the intersection since the enemies can sometimes decide to go south towards you. 5-2: Place a bomb on your spawn point, hide, and then collect the medal that appears. Use that to clear out the three enemies on the left, then find the second medal and do the same thing on the right. 5-3: Use the chain explosion trick to defeat the enemy to your north, then collect power-ups, defeat the second green enemy, and then slowly open up the corners one at a time, placing your bombs so they remain trapped in their tiny corners. 5-5: Clear out a few blocks to your immediate left, then grab the power-ups and hang out in that little nook. Keep placing bombs at the intersection to your right until the caped enemies are cleared out, then carefully go after the green enemies. 6-2: Use the chain explosion trick to move left and try to clear out a bomb, green guy, and two of the purple guys. Grab the power-ups that appear, hang out in the middle, and when a purple enemy approaches, place a bomb in front of them and run far behind them so they don't follow you. Final Boss: Grab the power-ups, then hide behind one of the hard blocks on the south side and put bombs out to hit him. As long as you're behind one of the hard blocks, his laser can't get you. For the second phase, he'll fire a rocket as soon as you walk into the same row/column as him. Lure him to the second lowest row, then walk out to bait him and quickly hide behind a hard block on the south side to dodge. Quickly place bombs to retaliate afterwards. For the final phase, stay on the opposite side and place bombs as his shield runs out. As long as you take it slow and remain patient (or just use RC bombs), this fight is easier than it looks. Good luck! |
