Baten Kaitos Origins Magnus Upgrade Checklist - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki

Set developed by Schengo, guide written by benit149.

INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone, and welcome to my third RA guide. Well technically, this one is more of a checklist than a guide, designed to make life a little easier when doing Magnus upgrades in Baten Kaitos Origins. So what’s the purpose of this checklist? It will come in handy for those wanting to 100% the game and get the Magnus Stockpiler VII achievement, which involves registering all 655 possible Magnus into your Gathering.

For those not in the know, a Magnus is the Baten Kaitos universe’s term for a card. Anything and everything is represented by a card, which are further divided into two categories: weapons, skills or items used in battle, a.k.a. Battle Magnus; versus items needed to progress the story or complete side quests, a.k.a. Quest Magnus. A Magnus upgrade is when you go to a shop and use a Quest Magnus to change a Battle Magnus into something new. Furthermore, you need to do what’s called a Magnus Mix for certain Quest Magnus, which involves using a Magnus Mixer to combine two or more Quest Magnus together to produce a new one.

Yes, indeed, all of these Battle Magnus upgrades and Magnus Mixes do count towards the 655 total, so this is going to be very involved and time-consuming. If you intend to go for this achievement, you need to have a ton of patience and knowledge.

The reason I wrote this checklist is because I found it cumbersome and difficult to search through existing guides for which Quest Magnus and how many I needed to collect before going to the shop to upgrade Battle Magnus. Your Quest Magnus inventory is limited, so it’s inevitable that you will make multiple trips to the shop. Furthermore, the only shop that will upgrade any and all Battle Magnus is the one in Tarazed, which is incredibly annoying to traverse back and forth between. The other shops have a cap on which Battle Magnus they upgrade, so the Tarazed shop is your best bet for eliminating this problem. Personally, I waited until this shop was available very late in the game to avoid worrying about such limitations. You do have the option of doing upgrades as you play through the storyline though. The decision is up to you.

I won’t be detailing where to find all of the Quest Magnus. There are plenty of other guides for that, and this game is long enough that you will learn where to look and memorize them. The only thing I’ll do is briefly outline any Magnus Mixes you need to perform. Ultimately, my main goal is to sort all of the Quest Magnus you need, and which Battle Magnus are attached to them for upgrading. While the order that the Battle Magnus appear in this guide may or may not be accurate with the game’s ordering, their counts are correct since I added entries as I performed upgrades one at a time.

ACQUIRING BATTLE MAGNUS

Finding the Quest Magnus is one thing, but getting the Battle Magnus is a different beast altogether. A lot of the frustration is going to involve getting lucky with RNG. Furthermore, the various shops will change their stock as you progress through the story, meaning that certain Battle Magnus that are available earlier will disappear later, and you’re forced to use a different, RNG-heavy method of finding them. While I didn’t outline how many of a particular Battle Magnus you need, as I was more focused on sorting this by Quest Magnus, you can use your browser’s search function to look up how many of a certain Battle Magnus you need. From my own experience, I’ll give you a heads up on some particularly annoying cards I had trouble finding late in the game:

Apocalypse Sword: You need 5 of these. The Black Dragon boss drops one, the Hercules Dragon regular enemy can drop them in Tarazed’s Core, and you can acquire them from the trader in Gemma. Not too hard to find, really.

Armor of Tonitrus: You need 7 of these, and is the absolute most you need of any Battle Magnus. One is dropped by the Holoholobird (itself considered to be one of the worst bosses in the game), while the rest have to be acquired with Magnus Pack Coupons. I’ll explain what these are shortly, and trust me, you’re going to loathe them.

Crown of Bubbles: You need 2 of these. They are not available in any shops, and no monsters drop them. There is one in a chest in Matar Highlands, but the other must be acquired through Magnus Pack Coupons in Gemma.

Freesword: You need 3 of these. It is available in Sheliak’s shop during that point in the story, but will disappear eventually, meaning you need to rely on Magnus Pack Coupons in that same shop.

Hymnos Kune: You need 2 of these. In my own experience, this was a particularly frustrating card to find late in the game. During Duhr’s story events, it is available in Algorab’s shop for purchase, but will disappear. Otherwise, you have to use Magnus Pack Coupons in Gemma.

So now that you have a good idea of the trickier Battle Magnus to watch out for in the shops, let’s dive into the three methods you have for acquiring cards in general. A fourth method is from treasure chests, but I think that’s pretty intuitive and doesn’t need further explaining.

1. Combat Drops

Obviously, monsters are going to drop them, though their odds are particularly low by default. To improve these odds, mix a Paramour’s Secret + Mother-in-Law’s Secret in the Magnus Mixer to produce Treasure Lowdown. The effect stacks, so you can have multiple Treasure Lowdowns in your inventory to farm loads of drops. Note that Treasure Lowdown will eventually age into Yesterday’s News, which will worsen your odds for drops, so discard them ASAP and make new Treasure Lowdowns once in a while. Be sure to balance how many Treasure Lowdowns to have while leaving some space for other Quest Magnus. I tended to use anywhere from 8 to 10.

2. Magnus Traders

Throughout the game, you will encounter NPCs that trade Battle Magnus with you. Aside from upgrades, this can be useful throughout the storyline for acquiring stronger cards than what’s available at that point. Unfortunately, this is going to involve RNG. Keep rerolling until the desired card comes up, or cancel the trade and start over with new cards. Every island has a trader available, and their locations are as follows:

Inca Rose: Sheratan, Hassaleh. She is the lady standing just outside the orphanage.

Krishna: Mintaka, Alfard. He is the librarian inside Baelheit Mansion’s library.

Farina: Pherkad, Sadal Suud. Inside Rodolfo’s Mansion, she is in the second room from the right.

Atrithr: Elnath Castle, Diadem. He is the soldier doing push-ups next to a Greythorne.

Sanya: Komo Mai, Anuenue. Lady sitting in front of School of Magic in Komo Mai (left side).

Garm: Gemma, Duhr. Go up the stairs and into the right house. He is the NPC right in front of you.

Lalune: Vega, Tarazed. She is a young girl inside one of the rooms.

Chabb: Mintaka, Alfard. On roof of house where lady can't sleep.

3. Magnus Pack Coupons

All right, folks, get ready for the even more hair-pulling, RNG-heavy method than the traders. As you play through the game and complete side quests, you will come across Magnus Pack Coupons. These are redeemed in shops for 10 free Battle Magnus chosen at random, much like a gacha game mechanic. Each shop has their own specific pools of cards to draw from.

Furthermore, there is another thorn in the side concerning coupons; you cannot save scum to reroll. The cards that are given from any given coupon are always fixed. If you do a roll, then reset and try again, you will notice that the rolled cards are exactly the same as before. This will be true for every subsequent coupon you use in that shop. Thus, the golden rule with coupons is this:

A Magnus Pack Coupon will always have its rolled cards predetermined the moment you receive the coupon.

So how can you manipulate the rolls if the cards given will always be the same? Simply by saving the game, acquiring the coupon, then going to the shop to do the roll. If it is not favorable, reset and do this process again. Of course, that’s silly to do with the coupons from treasure chests and side quest rewards because of all the running around you’d have to do, but that’s up to you.

A more efficient but significantly expensive option is available later in the game, which is purchasing coupons from some of the Magnus traders mentioned above. The drawback? Each one is worth 25,000 gold. Even if you save up loads of money from playing the game naturally, purchasing these is going to eat through it like no one’s business. So now a new problem arises; farming for money. Selling Battle Magnus is totally worthless, so we have to use battles. Unfortunately, regular enemies also give a pittance, so we need to use the Coliseum.

Hopefully you’ve been making progress towards becoming the Champion. If not, do so. Once you’re ready, go speak to the Old Researcher in one of the Coliseum’s side rooms and bring him four specific Quest Magnus dropped by bosses you defeated throughout the story. Once this is done, a new series of battles opens up called Advanced Battles. One of these fights is called The Wicked Gawd (no, that’s not a typo), consisting of three enemies; an Arma Prototype M, and two High-Mobility Cannons. The Arma Prototype M is the gorilla-like mech that will utterly wreck your party if you’re not prepared, and is hands down the hardest enemy in the game. Luckily, you can cheese this fight with two particular Battle Magnus - Tarot Card: Death, and Bomb.

The Tarot Card is acquired from filling out the Field Guide and talking to the doctor in Sheratan. This is the fifth reward given for that quest line, so you need to fill it out quite a bit. For the cost of one MP Gauge, the Tarot Card will incapacitate the user, but also have a random chance of either destroying or missing the enemies. If it hits the Arma Prototype M, you’ve essentially won, since the other monsters are much weaker compared to him. Meanwhile, the Bomb is easier to acquire from trading, being available even very early in the game. This will have a 50/50 chance of either destroying the targeted enemy, or doing tremendous damage to the user, and does not cost any MP Gauge. The damage is so huge that I was only surviving the damage with my characters in the level 80+ range. If you’re lucky and it hits the Arma Prototype M, all the better. I suggest making a separate battle deck specifically for using these two items, reviving/healing characters, and boosting the MP Gauge. Don’t worry if luck doesn’t go your way and you’re defeated, because there’s no penalty for losing in the Coliseum other than wasted time.

Your reward for all this trouble is 10,000 gold. Does this mean you have to go through this nightmare three times each just to purchase a single coupon? Of course not. You can mix a Quest Magnus called Gold Beetle Wallet, which is made from 2 Gold Beetle Carapaces + 1 Gold Nugget. This is available once you have access to the Celestial Tree in Anuenue. The Gold Beetle Carapaces can be found on the far left of the first screen behind the tent, and themselves give a 5% boost to gold from battles per carapace. To get Gold Nuggets however, you need to age the Gold Beetle Carapaces for 4 hours, and give no boost to gold received. Making the Gold Beetle Wallets gives a 10% boost to gold per wallet however, so stock up on as many of these as reasonably possible. Fortunately, these will never age into something else, unlike with Treasure Lowdown, so you can hold on to these for as long as you want. I held on to about 20 or so, and was able to get around 26,000 gold per fight.

So you got your wallets and are set up to fight The Wicked Gawd over and over again? Good. Farm whatever amount of money you desire, then go find a save flower and save your game. I strongly recommend going to Gemma for this process, since the Magnus trader is right there. Go buy your coupons from him, then run to whichever shop you need to use. Do not save the game after buying the coupons. Simply go to the shop and redeem the coupons. If you don’t get what you want, reset and buy fresh coupons to try again.

Honestly… if anything is going to test your patience in all of video gaming history, it’s this. If this is difficult for you to comprehend, just imagine how hard it was for me to figure it out without any assistance like this. ;P

As long as you follow this process though, you’ll acquire any Battle Magnus you’re missing.

CONCLUSION

That about does it. If this guide and checklist helps you in any way, then it was all the more worth it for me to write it. Baten Kaitos Origins, and by extension Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean are both huge games to get 100% in, so I hoped to mitigate some of the frustration involved with doing Magnus upgrades in Origins.

Always remember; don’t get discouraged. The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Take your time and mark everything, whether it’s from this checklist, anything that Pac-Man has eaten, EX Combos, or completing the Gathering. Most of all, be patient, and take a break if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Other than that, good luck, and happy cheevo hunting!
