Introduction

ESPN's Extreme Games is the only game that offers you the chance to race with all the most radical human-powered speed equipment: street luge, in-line skates, skateboard, and mountain bike. The courses are totally rigorous, and your opponents don't have any problem with punching and kicking you if you let them get close enough. You've got to be ready to do anything to get to the top of the standings in the grueling season that lies ahead. - An excerpt from ESPN's Extreme Games manual

Released at the launch of the Playstation in the United States, ESPN Extreme Games was developed internally by Sony's America division as a sort of catch-all "extreme sports" racer, and later as "1Xtreme" in a budget reissue to tie in to later games. Like a dream match, every division of street racing equipment gets to line up together and brawl to determine the superior style, in courses lined with gates and absolutely littered with debris, obstacles, and even wild animals. While I think there are clear winners and losers, every machine is capable of claiming victory, and it's my aim to decipher this relatively undocumented game and lead you to victory (and, perhaps, Mastery).

Controls

DPad Left and Right: Steer. Pretty self-explanatory. As a default method of steering you may find it too slow for some of the extreme turns you'll need to take, and so I mostly use this for small adjustments and instead use the next controls for everything else;

DPad Down/Left and Down/Right: "Extreme Lean". The quick turn. Essential to weaving through obstacles and careening away from walls. With no noticeable speed penalty between this and the slow turn you'll be using this constantly. At high speeds this can become hard to control, but mastering its quirks is important to finishing on the podium instead of the middle of the field.

X Button: Accelerate. Pedal, skate, 'push off', whatever you're riding, this is how you start moving. This slowly depletes your Strength Meter, and if held long enough will eventually transition into a crouch. While it sounds simple, this button, shockingly, should really only be used when the race starts, after you crash, or when you're riding uphill. Merely accelerating by pushing along at best will only get you about 50% to your top speed (usually 35-40 mph on default gear), and prevents you from refilling your stamina. Think of this as your "first gear" of racing.

Circle Button: "Crouch". The "second gear" of the game. Take a low stance and use your momentum to take off. While crouching your Strength Meter refills, and while riding downhill or on (most) flat streets will speed you up considerably. Use this only once you've accelerated to the first speed threshold (again, 35-40) -- crouching at slow speeds will do nothing for you (beyond resting stamina). Once you've learned the track layout, you'll be using this button 90% of the time, and the only way to finish beyond 8th place or so is to crouch whenever you can. I'll discuss how best to use these two buttons in the "How Do I Win" section of the guide.

Triangle Button: Decelerate. Slow it down. Can be useful to readjust from losing control, prevent a head-on crash, or not hit your head off of a top-speed ramp. Be mindful of opportunistic opponents looking to run past you. If you hold this button while at a stop for a few seconds, you'll start slowly going in reverse -- important for a missed gate.

Square Button: Jump. Catch some air. On flat ground how high you jump depends on how fast you're going, and a well-timed jump off of a ramp can boost your airtime. You can also use this to clear low-to-the-ground obstacles, debris, and other racers instead of faceplanting into them. While you will bounce off of an obstacle you land squarely on, a perfectly-timed jump can have you launch off of the obstacle instead for even more airtime. You decelerate in the air, so try not to spam jumps. NOTE: Street Luge riders can't jump on flat ground and need a ramp to get air.

L1/R1: Punch Left/Right. L2/R2: Kick Left/Right. Throw some hands. No "keeping it clean" here; fighting your way through the other racers is the only way to win. Your Strength Meter stops refilling while you are attacking. The computer will always go down in one strike (hit detection willing), and the attack hitbox is active for 100% of the animation, so swing first, early, and often. Bikes will always kick and street luges will always punch.

NOTE: Due to street luge racers naturally going under punches, you should only be kicking with L2/R2 (if you're not a luge yourself). There is no difference of damage and attack length between punches and kicks, so make sure you're not missing by punching over them.

Navigating

The menus in this game are for the most part easy to figure out, but just in case I'll walk you through it. After pressing Start and after every race you'll land at this top menu:

1xtOptions

An Exhibition is a unranked race where you can select every parameter yourself, which will be required for many of the achievements. New Season will start a new 12-race season, which you can either save to a memory card (maximum of four seasons at a time) or with a password (not recommended). You'll be asked to enter a three-letter initial, and each Season must have its own unique initials. Continue Season will load a season from memory or prompt you for a password.

Difficulty can be chosen here, between Easy/Normal/Hard/Extreme. Whatever difficulty you selected when you started a New Season will be locked in for the season, even if you pick something else here on Continue Season.

Besides Sound/Music, Video Off/On toggles FMV sequences before and after the race where then-current ESPN announcer Suzy Kolber talks about the course and judges your performance. You can disable these without consequence, although they will always play before and after you enter a Cash Course.

You're then dropped to this main screen:

1xtMenu1

The poster on the left is the next course you'll be racing, and in Exhibition mode you can interact with it to change the course. The Standings show you the current season points -- useless for our achievement purposes. The TVs let you pick your character -- more on that later. The metal door on the right moves to this Equipment screen:

1xtMenu2

Here you can choose which of the four styles you'll ride as, see what equipment you have, and use the book on the table to buy better gear. In Exhibition mode only you can interact with the TV to change the CPU's equipment, which will be important for many Exhibition achievements. Hitting Start on any of these screens (while not in the equipment menu or character select) will immediately go to the main screen and start the race -- make sure everything is set up how you want it.

How Do I Win?

To be completely frank -- ESPN Extreme Games / 1Xtreme can be extremely janky and bizarrely difficult to do well in. The AI on every difficulty is extremely aggressive and biased against the player's success -- anyone who is not in the top 3 of the race does not want to win, but wants to stop you from winning. Victory in this game (and mastery of this set) demands great improvisation, a reasonable amount of memorization, and sometimes just plain luck. It personally took me about 35 hours to master the set, and that includes liberal amounts of fast-forwarding through loading and reloading the same races. With this knowledge, I hope to give you a head-start on the lessons I learned.

Racers and Equipment

Let's Gear Up

Every race gear in 1Xtreme has its advantages, drawbacks, and quirks, but all of them are more than capable of winning. For achievement mastery, you will have to use all four thoroughly, but for some achievements you'll be able to choose your own gear -- I'll give you a breakdown of the pros and cons of each, and my personal thoughts on their usefulness.

Bikes

+ Very resilient to hitting small/broken objects -- while others will trip, fall, and crash, you can bounce harmlessly over them.

+ Top-class X acceleration on flat ground or uphill. Maintains speed reasonably well and gets up to speed quickly.

+ Second-best top speed in the game, beaten only by street luge.

+ Good steering and handling, can change direction relatively fast. Acceptable jumps at high speed.

- Slowest in the game to recover from a crash (due to needing to re-mount the bike). Loses a lot of ground on wrecks.

- Very large frame. Difficult to make late dodges, unable to duck under objects, can hit head easily on awkward jumps.

NOTES: Essentially the "tank" of 1Xtreme. Able to plow over many small objects others would falter to, bikes can get going quickly and be difficult to stop. Also like a tank, once it's stopped it can take ages to get back on its feet. You'll feel invincible until you're not. Personally, a respectable choice, and handy on several courses.

Skateboards

+ Excellent handling, can zip around obstacles others will slog through. Great jumps off of flat ground.

+ Acceptable acceleration on flat ground, if perhaps unremarkable.

+ Besides rollerblades, fastest of the dismountable gear to recover from a crash.

+ Can crouch under a few objects that bikes and rollerblades cannot.

- Can be easily tripped from small/broken objects if hit more directly.

- Slowest top speed in the game, though not by much. Difficult to maintain speed on uphill sections.

- Awkward jumps off of ramps that can have you take side hits on jump gates.

NOTES: Probably as close to a jack of all trades as you can get in 1Xtreme. Its great jumps and maneuverability can make up for somewhat unimpressive speed stats, although a really bad crash can leave skateboards very put out on the standings.

Street Luge

+ Highest top speed in the game. Absolute speed demon on downhill that can dust every other gear.

+ Very small frame and always prone, allowing you to sneak under railings and around obstacles that others must turn through.

+ Has a special animation for head-on collisions with walls & solid objects that is technically the fastest crash recovery in the game.

- Painfully slow X acceleration on flat land and uphill. Can easily be left behind if forced to accelerate from 0 with no downhill.

- The most harmed from small/broken objects -- very easily knocked off the luge. The only gear to be affected by hitting objects like tumbleweeds and chickens. If knocked off the luge, second slowest to remount.

- Cannot jump without a ramp, and must steer around lengthy blockades others can skip.

NOTES: In conclusion, street luge is a gear of contrasts. Its incredible speed is not to be underestimated, and you may feel jealous as a CPU luge rockets by you at the finish line, but be very wary of its fragility and commitment to Absolute Speed.

Rollerblades

+ Fastest by far to recover from a crash, since there's no need to remount the gear. Rolls through glancing hits fairly well.

+ Great acceleration on flat and uphill, easy to maintain through quick changes.

+ Good top speed, can keep up easily with most gears on downhill.

+ Good handling, able to weave around obstacles with ease, though speed can be a problem. Good jumps.

- Very wide stance. Although can take hits well, gets hit a lot.

- Skids far on crashes, leaving a chance to be left in a bad position. Can be tripped by broken objects.

- Very high stance on jumps, hits head a lot on high speed gate jumps.

NOTES: My personal favorite. Allows for a lot of mistakes with great recovery and has the stats to keep up with more specialized gear, but gets hit a lot and thus uses a lot of stamina to keep up.

Who Do You Play As?

1Xtreme has a motley crew of made-up racers to select from, but the question is "who should I pick?" To start, every racer has gear they are best suited for, so whatever gear you're using, make sure the racer is maxed out for that stat. Other than that, it actually doesn't... really matter! Everyone has the same voice and is only distinguished by their palette.

There are two extra stats that go unexplained in the manual, so I'm left to assume the arrows are "handling" and the heart is "stamina". Based on that, I'll give you a quick cheat sheet for the best secondary stats for each gear.

Bikes: Patricia Elenia. Skateboards: Sam Marubayashi. Luge: Tony Beccaccio. Rollerblades: Ralph J. Vanni.

Courses and Secrets

There's five courses plus a bonus course to go through, and in the course of your mastery you will be seeing them a lot. Thus, I will save you a point-by-point breakdown of every obstacle in the course and instead talk about the extra areas that secret gates are tucked away at.

Utah

Very straightforward easy course, with wide roads. When the road splits, make sure to go in the direction of the gates -- even if you don't need them for this race, it's the safer route.

Secret Area

Near the end of the course, after the second split paths, you'll see a path open up in the canyon to your left here:

1xtSecret1

Make a hard left and you'll enter a cavern with a few yellow gates to collect. At the end, you'll need to make a hard right to go back to the main road and finish the race.

San Francisco

Wide open roads, but many more obstacles than Utah. Watch for the tram and make sure to jump it at high speeds with the ramp. No secret area here!

South America

A trip through ancient broken ruins and a dense forest, with tighter roads. Ends in a ruin with special gates and a foot race to the finish line.

Secret Area

In the final ruins area (with the purple gates controlling the doors), you'll reach a wide open area, where you'll need to make a hard left to hit this gate:

1xtSecret4

Make sure to keep up your speed, because the left door will only be open for a second. If you clear the door, you'll end up in an extra area with many green cash gates to collect, and eventually merge with the main road. Don't forget to make a hard right afterwards!

Lake Utah

Long, winding highways with a slew of blockades. Many places to get hung up here -- watch your angles on the snake curve roads and get ready to make sudden adjustments.

Secret Area

About halfway through the level there'll be a purple gate that will break down the boards on this mine:

1xtSecret2

Several gates to go through here -- the purple gates will blow up the dynamite, so be careful not to go too fast or you'll run directly into the explosions!

Italy

The final challenge. Thin roads littered with obstacles ending with a tight race through city streets and plenty of things to trip on. Stay cautious on the final stretch -- one wreck here could blow the whole race.

Secret Area

Halfway though the race, there will be a wide opening in the dirt past some pillars with an opening into a crypt:

1xtSecret3

Dodge or ramp over the graves to collect the extra gates. When you leave, make a hard left immediately because there are gates on the main road past the exit.

How To Race Well

So you know how the buttons work, you know how the gear works, but how does it all come together? Here I'll put down everything I can think of to help you go from falling on your face to leaving everyone in the dust.

All I Need Is Speed

  • Before anything, practice. This game system is esoteric, the acceleration system is like a seesaw, and the AI never takes it easy on you. Run some Exhibition races, with AI or by yourself, and put this all into practice. Figure out how to go fast and keep going fast.
  • While I did mention that using X will eventually automatically crouch, this is very inefficient for quickly gaining speed and you should nearly always manually crouch instead. Think of it like a manual transmission in racing -- shifting to the next gear yourself is the fastest way to reach your top speed, instead of letting the car handle it whenever.
  • When you're going uphill, keep crouching only until your speed is decreased back to below your X button speed. If the hill is short enough, you can ride it out with your momentum instead of gearing down. If you start manually accelerating early, your speed will crater.
  • Speed will affect how high you jump, especially off of ramps. You won't clear anything going 10mph, and you'll probably hit your head on something going 90mph. Mind your speed and angle if you need to get into the air.

Who Put These Barrels Here??

  • Game difficulty affects one thing above all -- how many objects and blockades are littered throughout the level, and in some cases, how many gates. Easy courses are fairly wide open, with little to slow you down and wide open gates to cruise through, but Extreme courses are nightmare factories with anything conceivably possible placed to slow you down.
  • Some objects can be knocked over and start rolling, creating a moving hazard. Others can break, creating a trip hazard. In several courses, stray chickens or rabbits litter the level -- for the most part there to make a noise and some juvenile humor if you hit one, but for luges as an extra hazard, since they are displaced by any object.
  • Think you're going to hit something? Jump. Many objects are short enough to clear with a speedy jump. Is it too tall? Do everything you can to turn out of the way. Even if you can't completely avoid it, a glancing hit will keep you on your feet instead of slamming directly into a brick wall.

Are You The Gatekeeper?

  • There are three types of gates -- yellow gates give 10 points to your Season score, green gates add $5 to your wallet, and purple gates have a special interaction with an object, whether it's opening a door or turning a ramp.
  • If you're not pursuing an achievement that requires all or most of the gates, they can be safely ignored -- yellow gates have no associated achievements, and you'll earn more cash from finishing first than all the green gates. Purple gates can be useful for certain main path doors and ramps, but otherwise are not strictly necessary.
  • Be careful with ramp gates -- you can go too fast or slow and either hit your head on the top of the gate, or miss it entirely and have to reverse.
  • If you are doing a gate achievement, slow it down. While you can reverse to get a missed gate, the time wasted by having to reverse is immense compared to slowly weaving through a series of tight gates.
  • If you ride too far past a gate, the game may glitch and the gate will become unobtainable. You'll have to restart the race.
  • For the Extreme gate achievements, you are racing by yourself, so take your time and make sure you don't miss any stray gates.
  • Having trouble with the "All Gates + Top 3" achievements? While you can get these achievements with other Season-related achievements, there are less obstacles and gates on Easy, so you can do quick cleanup work there.

BRING ON THE FIGHTS

  • With 15 other racers here, you will be in fights constantly. Practice the timing and range of your swings, you'll need them.
  • If you have the option, you should always use kicks for the simple fact that punches won't hit luges, but kicks will hit everyone.
  • The top 3 racers are focused on winning. Everyone else is focused on fighting you. Racers will generally not fight each other but will always take a swing as you pass by.
  • As you approach a racer, or they slowly approach you, they will match your speed and attempt to hit you. You can knock every CPU racer down with one hit, but... the hit detection is wonky and it may take several. Keep trying.
  • Unless there's no other option, try not to get in fights with multiple opponents at the exact same time. They're only trying to fight you, and several hits back to back will likely send you crashing.
  • Remember that you don't recover stamina while you're attacking. If you're low on stamina, take a short break -- otherwise you can trade hits and both of you become KO'd.

Here Comes The Money

  • If you pass all gates, you'll unlock a run on the Cash Course, a special area where you can run through $5 and $10 gates. Your time limit is determined by your finishing position, starting at a pointless 5 seconds for 16th place and an extra 5 seconds for every better position, up to 80 seconds for a first place finish. The Cash Course is tied to several achievements and is a huge source of money if you can place well, upwards of $500 a run.
  • You receive $300 for 1st, $200 for 2nd, and $100 for 3rd. Everything else gets no bonus cash.
  • You can buy upgrades for your gear between races, upping your top speed, acceleration, and handling. This is a strange topic though, because you can win a race with the worst gear. This is because the CPU compensates their average speed for your current gear, so anything can win and anything is competitive. It is true that better gear lets you catch the front runners faster, but high speeds can be dangerous with the CPU rubber-banding they can always catch you. In the end it's your call -- I preferred the mid-range gear as a good balance between reasonably controllable speed and performance in the race.

That One Didn't Count

  • You can exit a race to the menu at any time.
  • If you're playing a season with the memory card, if you exit to menu the game will assume you have forfeited and move on to the next race. However you can choose to not save, and reload your last save to try the race again with no penalty. (The one case that this will not work is the 12th and last race of the season, where the save will automatically be deleted.)
  • If you accidentally save over your season save after a bad race, you can simply start a new season and quit every race until you've returned to the race you were working on. Just remember your gear will be returned to default.

TLDR: Just Tell Me How To Win!

1) Find a favorite gear to learn the game on. If you need a suggestion, try rollerblades. Make sure your racer matches your gear in stats.

2) Learn how to accelerate further with Circle, it's the key to catching the top racers. Use it downhill or on flat roads and switch back to X on uphill.

3) Be patient with gates, a slow gate is better than having to reverse for a gate.

4) Kick everyone you meet (in this game). Kick early, kick often.

5) Use your saves to keep trying on the same races in Season mode.

Roadmap and Achievements

These achievements can be tackled in any order you wish. You can take a break from Season to work on Exhibition achievements, and only one achievement prevents you from changing anything mid-game (Money In The Making (25)).

Step 0: Practice

While you can attempt any achievement immediately, it will be difficult to win races or collect gates until you're familiar with the maps. Learn the game, how the gear works, and how to go fast and start winning.

Beyond here is merely my suggestion for the order based on how I did it, rather than a must-follow guide.

Step 1: No Competition / More Money

This is just you and the course, on Extreme difficulty in Exhibition, with all the CPUs turned off. You'll need to get gates while only missing a maximum of three -- if you have to miss any I'd recommend ramp gates, where it can be finnicky to thread the needle of speed and obstacles. Don't forget to reverse for missed gates!

Since you technically always finish first place in these races, you'll also automatically be sent into the Cash Course, where you can use this time to get the More Money achievements for a $500 Cash Course run with each piece of gear.

Step 2: Hard Competition

Now it's time to start winning races. Don't concern yourself with gates, Hard courses are busy as it is. You should be pretty familiar with maintaining high speed, fighting off opponents, and recovering quickly from crashes. You'll need to set everyone to use the same gear as you.

Step 3: Extreme Competition

Pick your favorite gear and make sure the CPU is set to not use it. You need to know the maps very well and anticipate turns before they happen.

Step 4: No Miss Gates

These achievements must be done on Season mode. Easy is recommended since the courses are simplified.

Step 5: Gold Medal / Gold Season (with Extreme Games and Season Shopper)

These achievements must be done on Season mode. You can do everything at the same time on Hard difficulty.

Final: Money in the Making / Money Games

These achievements must be done on Season mode. You can do both at the same time on Hard difficulty.

It may seem daunting to jump immediately into Extreme courses for your first achievements, but there are no opponents during these races, so you can take as long as you need.

To disable opponents, in Exhibition go to the equipment screen and interact with the TV so that it says "CPU players", and turn off all the gear lights on the right so it says "CPU OPPONENTS DEACTIVATED".

Take the courses slow and keep your eyes out for every possible place a gate could be. Don't forget on every course except San Francisco there's a secret path that hides extra gates.

Once you finish the race with all gates you'll be thrown into the Cash Course and tasked with earning $500, once with each gear. If you feel like you're too slow on the Cash Course, don't forget to use your winnings to upgrade your gear.

Now we're going to Equipment and adding opponents back in. Don't forget that every opponent must be only using the same gear that you are. Hard courses are fairly strewn with objects and CPU aggression is a little higher than normal -- ignore any optional gates and focus on fighting your way to the finish line.

Step 3: Extreme Competition | Total points: 50

Extreme Competition [San Francisco] (10)
Finish San Francisco in Exhibition Mode as 1st place with nobody using same Vehicle as you. [Extreme]

Use the gear you're most comfortable with and turn that gear off for the CPUs. Now you'll need to tackle the Extreme courses at high speed with very aggressive opponents that stay tightly packed.

For the most part, the strategy comes down to "good luck and stay focused", but in particular the Extreme Italy course is very difficult due to the ending through the city streets with strewn-about signs and planters. My best advice right here is to pace yourself -- don't try to speed too fast through the obstacles or you'll plow into one when you least expect it. Take it a little slower and focus on fighting anyone that approaches you to maintain your first place position.

These achievements must be done in Season Mode.

Now you'll be combining the two principles -- you'll need to go through every gate and at least make top 3.

Originally I tried to do this at the same time as the Gold Medal achievements but I found the normal courses to be too unpredictable to commit to All Gates + First Place, so I'd recommend pacing yourself and tackling these on Easy for very simple courses that make it easy to keep up with the competition. Usually only 1st and 2nd place are faster than the others, so even with some crashes or slowdowns there's a very good chance you can catch up to make top 3, so don't give up right away.

These achievements must be done in Season Mode.

Time to put everything together and start winning Season races. You'll need to win every course with every gear set in Season Mode for Gold Medal, but you can double-up and win four on Hard for Gold Season. Finally, you can pick your favorite gear set and aim to at least place in the top three 8 times in a Normal+ season.

Since this is the first time you'll need to play beyond the first five races on a season, to note: after the first five races of the season the courses will loop with a harder version than your current difficulty (unless you're playing on Extreme) -- so, if you're playing on Hard, the second loop will be Extreme courses, etc. For this, you might choose to do Extreme Games on Normal so you only have to top 3 in Hard courses. Don't forget if you miss your target you can choose to not save and reload your season save to try again.

With the earnings you'll get through either Gold Season or Extreme games you should earn more than enough money for Season Shopper, which is buying every upgraded gear that is not the starter set. To save time, you can buy the gear for one, then simply reload a Continue Season, change gear sets, and buy all the upgrade for that one -- repeat for all four. The most expensive full set is the Rollerblades -- all upgrades combined cost $2,565.

Final: Money in the Making / Money Games | Total Points: 50

Money In The Making (25)
Earn 100$ 15 times across multiple Cash Courses during a Season without changing the Vehicle. [Hard+]
Money Games (25)
Earn 100$ 30 times across multiple Cash Courses during a Season. [Normal+]

These achievements must be done in Season Mode.

You are reading those achievements correctly: the goal is not to get $1500 total on Hard or $3000 on Normal, but 15 counts of $100 on Hard and 30 counts of $100 on Normal. This means that, for instance, if you get $485 in one run, the game only counts four instances of $100 and discards the rest for the next run.

You have 12 races (one full season) to earn $3,000 (in $100 increments split per run) purely through the Cash Course. This means that you need to get all gates on the run, and while you are not required to finish first or even the top 3, you need to finish relatively high on the boards to have meaningful time to earn money in the Cash Course.

For context, I earned this achievement on the 11th race of the Season on Normal, with some forgettable finishes and some top 3 finishes. You may consider getting a calculator or keeping track of how many full sets of $100s you earn so you know what pace you're on. Good luck!
