(WIP) Tomba! 2 ‐ Spyromba Guide - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki
This is a guide for the "Spyromba" achievement in Tomba! 2.
Spyromba (50) Collect all the gems (except the ones from infinite sources).
This achievement is missable (due to changes in the Kujara Ranch area after defeating the Evil Ice Pig), but also extremely time-consuming. There are 310 gems throughout the game, and there's no area-by-area achievement tracking... so if you miss one, you'll have to re-visit every area looking for it. The screenshots and descriptions here may be of some help.
Gems and areas are listed in the same general order you'd reach them during normal gameplay. There are going to be gems you cannot reach during your initial visit - I've tried to keep backtracking to a minimum.
At the back of the area, there are three gems near the Nishiki Birds' nest: One on the ground, two on the tree's trunk.
From either end of the first seesaw, you can leap from the barrel at its highest point to collect two floating gems per side.
In the foreground, strike the first seesaw's barrel with your Blackjack. With the blue end pointed down, it will release a gem.
In the foreground, leap from the second seesaw's barrel to grab a gem. If you land on the green chest, you'll be able to jump to another gem; landing on the red chest will let you jump just far enough to reach a third.
In the background, strike the second seesaw's barrel with your Blackjack. With the red end pointed down, it will release a gem.
There's one in the background above the fish-drying net. Spin the crank to the top by holding left, then hold up as you jump to just reach it.
Climb the ladder next to the burning house for another.
You need to grab and pass through a pole as you leave the village area - there's a gem in plain view.
Gem Total: 15 / 310
Near the start, a bunch of barrels are sticking out of the mountainside. Four gems are floating at the very top - you'll see them as the Crab Basket goes flying off. These are easier to grab if you drain the water in the next area by flipping all of the red/blue barrels so that the blue side points down - that will make these barrels rise and fall automatically.
There's also one at the bottom of this area. Grab the side of the barrel to collect it.
As you approach the windmill, the path splits. On the back path, there's a gem floating right in front of you.
Jump back to the first crank and hold left to raise it as high as possible. If you hold up+left as you jump, you'll land perfectly on the next crank. Spin left on it, hold up as you jump to grab the crank above it, then spin left again to rise to the top. You'll be able to see two gems from here - both can be grabbed with an up+left jump from the top of these two cranks.
Continue left to the windmill, but take the other path instead of entering the door. If you drained the water previously, you can just fall into the aqueduct and not worry about drowning. Continue to the right to see a gem just above you.
Jump up onto the seesaw. Move it back and forth so that you can jump to grab two more gems (one at a swing bar in the center, one on the awning above the stone structure).
Use that awning to climb on top of the stone structure. You'll see two floating gems immediately... then another one below as you move to the right... then one more as you climb down the other side of the roof.
Climb down further to see one more at the edge of the roof, and another floating nearby.
You won't be able to see them from the outside, but there are two gems inside the stone structure (I collected one before it was visible - there's one on each side of the red chest).
This screenshot shows three gems, but the topmost one was seen in a previous screenshot, so count this as two more.
Head all the way to the right (near the start of this path) and you'll be able to see one more - use the swing bar with an up+left jump to grab it easily.
If you climb back up the stone structure's roof, you'll see one more gem in the distance (above the seesaw from the first leg of this foreground path). You can get it more easily with the Bird Suit (earned by grabbing the lure stuck to the roof of the stone structure), but you can also reach it by taking a huge leap from the structure's roof to the left, grabbing the swing bar, then jumping up from it to the crank.
Enter the windmill, hand Win the Golden Crabs, then continue on towards Coal-Mining Town.
Gem Total: 38 / 310
Climb up the first chain you reach, then jump back towards the gem.
Continue beneath the metal walkway, passing by the fire-breathing enemy. There's a gem floating near a chain.
Retrace your steps and follow the metal walkway. The first chain you come to will have a gem attached (but you'll have to watch the cutscene revealing the Ice Boomerang before you can climb back up and grab the gem).
When the cutscene finishes, you'll see two gems on the chain below you.
Continue along the orange pipe, jumping to the foreground (onto the blue pipe) when possible so you can go grab the Ice Boomerang. With that, freeze the nearest Capper, then ride the steam up to two more gems (the second is just barely visible in the second screenshot - it's floating above the first).
Walk to the other end of the blue pipe and use the Ice Boomerang to douse the flaming chain. Jump from the chain to the floating gem - you can safely jump all the way to the right, as there's a ledge to land on (this is the entrance to one of the secret Towers).
Jump back to the chain and get onto the red pipe, right below the blue pipe (you'll see gems floating underneath the pipe, but they can't be collected safely without the Grapple). Continue to the end of this pipe to find two more gems near a chain.
Climb up that chain to find one more.
Jump off the chain to the blue pipe, then return to the "crossing" and jump up to the orange pipe. Another Capper is covering a steam vent - uncap it to reach three more gems.
Jump to the nearby platform (with the small ladders on either side) and you'll see a floating gem to the right.
There are two chain lengths hanging beneath the bridge to the hot spring - grab onto the right-hand one to pull it down, lower the bridge, and bring up a Mudball Surprise on the left. Climb down to collect a gem (as before, the gem on the left can't be safely collected without the Grapple, so ignore it for now).
Break the locks on the door to Coal-Mining Town and continue on.
Gem Count: 54 / 310
Enter Gran's house at the northwest part of town, near the trolley tracks. There's a red chest on the second floor containing a gem.
Gem Count: 55 / 310
Walk right from the start of the area, passing the icy pole. Destroy the snow pile (with a hammer or a thrown enemy) to uncover a trampoline. Bounce on it to collect two gems.
Ignore the hanging icicle for now and climb the ladder. At the top, destroy the snow pile to your right, then enter the Chimney Shed and collect the Traveler's Diary. Exit the Chimney Shed, run all the way to the left, climb the ladder there, then return the Diary to traveler standing on the far left. He'll give you the Green Key, and the green chest stacked next to him contains the Squirrel Clothes. Wear these to explore this frozen area!
With the Squirrel Clothes equipped, find a nearby fork and move into the foreground. Collect the Big Sack from under the snowpile (return it to the Chimney Shed later), then climb to the top of the icy pole. To the left is a floating red chest with a gem inside - if you don't catch it mid-air, it'll wait for you on the ground below.
Return to the top of the icy pole and look to the right. You'll see a few floating gems here; if you jump off and flap your wings, you can collect four total.
If you fly further to the right, you'll pass over an Ice Anemone and land on a mountaintop area. Clear out all the enemies here (you'll need the Fire Hammer to defeat the Ice Anemone for good, but you can just feed it an enemy and freeze it for now). Continue right up the side of the mountain to find a rope - pulling on it will drop a bunch of snow, turning Tomba into a snowball and rolling him down the mountain. As you roll down, hold right to reduce your speed (otherwise you'll bounce too early and break the snowball). Near the end, as you approach the Ice Anemone, hold left - this should throw you up into the air, land on the trampoline from earlier, and bounce high into the clouds. This will net you three gems (plus a full Pot of Life).
Warning
These are the missable gems for this achievement - they are not accessible after defeating the Evil Ice Pig as Kujara Ranch will thaw out. Be sure to collect them ASAP! (The Pot of Life is also missable, locking you out of the "Max Health" achievement for the same reason)
You'll land near the icicle we ignored earlier - with the Squirrel Suit equipped, you won't slip off it. Jump on and grab the gem to the right.
Fly over to the right. Grab the snowball and throw it at the icicle further to the right - they'll merge, lengthening the icicle. This will let you grab three more gems.
Fly over to and climb up the next icicle. At the top, you'll see two gems, but you can only reach one of them for now. That's fine - you need to return with the Grapple later, anyway. Grab the Mystery Reflector from the Kokka Bird's egg while you're here.
Fly all the way back to the left and head back towards the Chimney Shed (grab the Fire Hammer if you haven't already). Climb up the ladder next to the Chimney Shed entrance. Before you reach the Giant Ice Pig, you can use some swing bars to reach two gems.
Use the swing bars to jump up onto the elevated seesaws. Between the seesaws is a floating gem.
There's another to the left of the leftmost seesaw, above the floating Mountain Peach.
After defeating the second Giant Ice Pig, walk left to find a hidden slide. It will spit you out behind the icy pole - you'll collect one gem near the end of it.
Gem Count: 75 / 310
While exploring the area, you'll probably notice a long line of floating gems and chests in the foreground. You can attempt to fly to them by jumping near the Kujara Washing Shed, but right now you won't be able to jump high enough. Ignore these for now - come back later with different pants.
Instead, climb up the ladder, return the Hexagon Gear, then climb up the next ladder to get into the background layer. Turn around at the top to see two gems you can reach.
Back at the top of the ladder, look left across the gap to see three more gems you can grab.
Gem Count: 80 / 310
A few gems here won't be easy or safe to grab without the Grapple - we'll definitely return later.
Note
If Tomba gets grabbed by a Ghost Pig and becomes invisible, you won't be able to collect gems. If grabbed, you can jump onto a Ghost Pig to go back to normal.
There are two pendulum-like things swinging across the water to help you pass. One gem is reachable above the second pendulum.
There's a crank you can grab just after the second pendulum. Swing around to the right to raise it up - you'll grab two gems along the way.
You'll see the next one off to the right, past the hanging Blue Fruit. Grab the crank near to it to see another gem. You can collect both of these, then flap back to the swing bar attached to the pendulum and jump back up to the crank.
Swing to the right to raise this crank towards the top. There are six gems to collect nearby: One you'll grab automatically as the crank rises, one floating to the left, one to the right, two floating above the white chest, and one more on the wooden platform suspended near the top.
Once you reach that wooden platform, you'll see three more off to the right.
The platform to the right of those last gems contains the entrance to Mizuno's Hut. If you walk off the left and float down, you'll see a bouncy platform with a ladder leading to the Artist's Atrium. You'll see two gems, one close and one further down - you'll have to retrace your steps after grabbing the second.
After that, return to the Artist's Atrium ladder and jump off to the right to see three more floating gems. You can grab these and float down back to the starting point.
If you gave the Blue Fruit to the artist at the Artist's Atrium, you'll have the Blue Key. There's a blue chest floating near the Artist's Atrium - open it to receive a gem. If you don't catch it midair, it will fall onto a white chest below.
Gem Count: 100 / 310
Just left of the save point, you'll see a floating gem - jump off to the left and flap your wings to grab it, plus another that will come into view. (There are a couple more further on which you could grab by jumping off hanging fruits, but it's not worth it - we'll come back for them later).
To proceed, you need to hit three stakes with your hammer to clear a huge rock formation. Go to the middle stake, overlooking the "Switch with Donglin" cabin - you'll see a couple floating gems immediately, and you can grab a total of four if you leap off the stake and fly to the left. If you fall straight down from the fourth gem, you land next to the lowest stake (and on the platform above those couple gems we're skipping for now).
Once you hit all three stakes and collect the Grapple, you can drop off the platform to your right and grab the two gems skipped previously. The green chest nearby also contains a gem - if you accidentally let it fall into the water, you'll have another chance if you save and reload your game, or warp to another area and back.
If you return to the middle stake's platform and look right, you'll see a floating gem. When you jump off to grab it, you'll see another further to the right - you can reach it if you grapple onto the nearby white chest.
Gem Count: 111 / 310
Right at the start, you'll see two gems floating above the spike patch...
Then another as you swing by...
And three more when you land on the first platform.
Collect two gems as you climb down the ladder.
There's one at the bottom on an Aquatic Plant.
From there, grapple to the point above and continue right. You can grab the next after swinging hard and jumping.
The next two are floating near the white chest. Grapple to the next point to grab the lower one safely (the middle one depicted in this screenshot is on a background layer - it'll come later).
From this same point, swing and jump to the left for the next gem.
The area opens up at this point, and the screenshots may be confusing since you can see gems on different layers. Stay in this foreground layer for now. There are two more gems near the next platform - grapple to its underside to reach them safely.
Keep going left to find another. It's easier to grab this if you first lower the seesaw end that's right above it.
Grapple to the next point and retrieve another gem to its left.
Now return to the start of this open area. The rightmost seesaw end is near a blue chest and two gems.
You probably saw these before - there are two gems floating above the leftmost seesaw. These are easier to grab if you lock the end into its higher position.
Now you can move into the next layer back. With this end of the seesaw locked into the lower position, you should be able to see five gems, plus a green chest (obscured here) which also contains a gem. Grab them all, using the Grapple to pull yourself back to the seesaw ends as needed.
There's one more floating above the rightmost seesaw end, easiest to grab when it's in its highest position.
Now leap off to the left and glide over to another floating gem and a red chest. The chest also contains a gem.
Fly back to the rightmost seesaw end and use it to move back one more layer. You should be able to see two gems immediately.
The next seesaw (which would let you go back further into the back-most layer) can be lowered, letting you grapple down to another gem.
If you lock this same end of the seesaw into its highest position, you can jump left from it to another gem.
Put this end back to its lower position, then move back into the back-most layer (so now you'll be standing on the higher end of this seesaw). Looking right, there are three gems above you and one below.
Return to the seesaw end and jump left. There are two floating gems, plus a red chest below the grapple point with another gem (not shown in this screenshot).
The last one is near the mouse door above the exit.
Continue on with the story for a while. There are no more gems to collect until you reach the Water Temple.
Gem Count: 153 / 310
Note
Some of the below is based on jumping from chests or enemies, and may seem "missable" if you don't get the enemy positioning correct or if the chest is collected. Nothing here is truly missable - either leave and return to the area to reset enemy positions, or come back later with better pants (or even Taboo Fruit) to give yourself some better jumping power.
Just above the start, jump up to find three gems near the door to the Crystal Artisan's Room.
It's tricky, but with the Pig Suit you can jump up to the next ledge. You'll see the next gem below you. Alternatively, equip the Squirrel Clothes and glide to your right from the lower ledge.
Atop the first spiked column, you can see one gem floating above, one floating below, and one atop the second column.
You'll see two more when standing on that second column.
This area features green enemies which shoot spines. You can bounce on their heads to get extra height, or hit them with the Grapple to turn them into small stone platforms. Either way, use the nearby enemy to reach two floating gems, a red chest, and two more gems on the way down.
After collecting the crystal panel and freeing the mermaid, your Pig Suit changes to a Swimming Pig Suit. Now you can collect the two underwater gems in this foreground area - just leap from the third (short) pillar and let gravity help you out.
Climb the ladder into the background layer. The current will carry you to the left, towards a waterfall going down to your death. Grab the low floating gem, then hit the green enemy with your Grapple to climb up and reach three more.
From that ledge outside the other mermaid's chamber (trapped in the large Aquatic Plant), you can use the Squirrel Clothes to start grabbing gems floating high above in this background layer. There are three gems before the green chest.
From that green chest, you can grab three more gems.
From the nearby white chest, you can see two more gems to the right.
Return to the ledge and re-equip the Swimming Pig Suit. Head further right upriver to find two more gems near the rising platforms + spikes area (you may have seen these while gliding to the previous two gems).
There are four more nearby.
Pass under the waterfall (a minor loading zone) and head up the ladders. One gem is floating above the Crying Door.
Move up to the next area and hit the green enemy with your Grapple. There are two gems floating above the Low Pitch Pearl (which is actually in another layer - you'll need to jump down the waterfall to grab that later).
If you hit the green enemy at its highest point, you can jump up and see two more floating gems. They seem just out of reach... but if you jump up with the Swimming Pig Suit and Turbo Pants (maybe even Taboo status if you're still having trouble), then throw the Grapple upwards along the right wall, you can latch onto a hidden white chest. From here, you can collect the two floating gems, plus the gem inside the chest.
Beneath the next waterfall is another gem. You may need to jump and let gravity help you reach it.
There's a green enemy against the waterfall at the far left. Hit it with your grapple at its highest elevation, then leap off the platform to reach a blue chest. From that chest, you can glide to two gems to the right. Alternatively, bounce off the head of the green enemy to get enough height to grab these.
Up another level, there's another submerged gem.
Jump down the left-hand waterfall to grab one more.
Return to this upper area and jump to the column at the far right. You can leap to another gem from here.
Examine the sleeping fish and speak to the mermaid to set a story flag (allowing you to collect all the harp pieces), but this is all you can do here for now. Backtrack towards the very start of the Water Temple, stopping partway down the river with the current. Now that you have the White Key, you can open the floating white chest you'd had to skip before. There's a gem inside.
Return to the foreground area, then go through the door at the far right (near the crab from which you stole the Crystal). As soon as you enter the area, jump up to the ceiling for three hidden gems.
There's a submerged gem in the first pool of water here.
Climb onto the beam above for a floating gem.
Climb up to the Holy Water fountain to the right, then jump up above the fountain to see a floating gem near a white chest.
Use the nearby green enemies to climb up further to the left. You'll see two gems before the small waterfall.
Climb up further to the man asking you to bring him all the Cogs (this will bring up the Minitta Tunnel later). Above him are two green enemies and two more gems.
There are two gems high above the nearby mouse door. You can grapple into the ceiling to collect them.
Use those green enemies to climb up higher, to another support beam. You'll see three gems in a vertical line.
Climb back up to the beam, then go even higher, reaching the platform with the door behind the waterfall. You can jump off to the left to get two more gems.
Climb back to that platform and look right this time. Use the green enemy to collect two more gems floating high above it.
Use that same enemy/platform to leap/glide as far to the right as you can. There's one more floating gem in the corner, and the white chest above it contains a huge gem. If you don't catch it in midair, just destroy the Aquatic Plant to grab it below).
You should have grabbed the Harp's Right Side from a blue chest nearby; the Left side can now be found in the Water Pump Room and the two Pearls are near the sleeping fish. Revisit that area, wake the Big Fish, enter the temple, collect the Water Pig Bag, then continue through the door to return to the starting area (or close to it, at least)!
Now that you have more weapons, equipment, keys, etc., you can revisit previous areas and collect everything you missed.
Gem Count: 220 / 310
When you were first here, you jumped from the rightmost seesaw to a green chest and a red chest to grab some floating gems. You can now open that green chest for another gem.
Head towards the Windmill at the end of the area. As you pass the mountainside with the barrels, there's a stalactite hanging down from a rocky outcrop. If you grapple into the outcrop and hold up, you'll flip into a small area containing a gem.
Continue left to the stone structure. The red chest inside contains a gem.
To the right of the Windmill in the background layer, you'll see a green chest. This contains a gem. You should be able to collect it easily (jumping straight up off of it lets you grab the crank right above), but if something goes wrong, just travel from the Windmill to the Pipes Area and back to respawn the chest.
Gem Count: 224 / 310
Head right towards the first chain, then climb it to the top. Leap off to the left and glide to a floating gem. The white chest above it contains a gem, too.
Atop the pipes, follow the orange pipe until you can jump down onto the blue pipe. Go all the way to the right, climb down, and use the Grapple to get under the red pipe. Follow its underside for three gems, starting with these two in plain view, then one further on before the Pot of Life 1/2.
Another set of three gems (plus a Pot of Life 1/2) are under the orange pipe - they're visible in the first screenshot in the previous step, actually. Head all the way to the end, near the Hot Spring. Use the chains and Mudball Surprise platform to grapple under the pipe, then make your way to the left.
Note
This next gem does not seem to count towards the Spyromba achievement. The green chest does count towards the one for opening all chests, however.
In Coal-Mining Town, visit Charles (if you didn't already complete his request - he'll have moved on otherwise) in the bunkhouse on the second level on the west side. The green chest inside contains a gem.
Gem Count: 232 / 310
From the start of the Ranch Area, head all the way to the right, past the icy pole, underneath the cliff, to the final icicle. With the Grapple in hand, you can now grab this other gem.
Near the end of the Ranch Area, jump up and grapple to a white chest for another gem.
Outside the Kujara Washing Shed, you should be able to leap and glide through the long line of floating gems (just make sure your Turbo Pants are equipped). There are seven gems to collect (plus green and white chests at the end).
Gem Count: 241 / 310
On the left side of the first area, there are three gems near the water, leading into a cave. Since you can't swim in these waters until the Evil Ghost Pig is defeated, I've chosen to skip these gems for now (even though they can be grabbed with the Grapple or just by allowing yourself to drown).
Instead, climb up into the trees as before. There's a white chest high up, at about the same height as the Artist's Atrium door. One gem is inside.
Climb up higher, to the small suspended wooden platform, then to the bouncy platform above that. Look to the left (towards the Snow Firefly cage) to see two more gems that can now be easily collected with the Grapple.
There are more gems in the Laughing Crying Forest area, but they are tough/unsafe to grab until the Evil Ghost Pig is defeated. However, this is a good time to use some Magic Wings to open a couple of special doors. In the forest, eat a Laughing Fruit, then warp to Large Mine Underground - Trolley Entrance to collect the Normal Fruit behind the Laughing Door. Warp back to the Laughing Crying Forest for a Crying Fruit, then collect the Mystery Mushroom behind the Crying Door on the back-most layer of Kujara Ranch - Ranch Summit.
Continue to The Deep Forest's seesaw area. Use the seesaws to move two layers into the background (you'll be one layer in front of the exit). Off in the void is a white chest containing a huge gem.
Gem Count: 245 / 310
There's a Laughing Door on the far side of Circus Village, near the Circus Warehouse. Open the blue chest inside for a gem.
Gem Count: 246 / 310
You should have all Water Temple gems already, but you can still activate the Holy Water fountain and the Minitta Tunnel, opening up a few more quests. With a bucket of Holy Water, return to Kujara Ranch - Ranch Area and climb up the mountain towards the snow-dropping rope. After the first climb, turn around to spot the Holy Tree. If you douse it with Holy Water, it will un-petrify and grow, leading you to an area with 50 floating gems! The white chest also contains a huge gem - don't forget it!
You will probably miss a few gems the first time through, but if you fall down before reaching the ladder at the end, you'll end up near the snow-dropping rope, so you can easily turn around and try again.
At this point, you can clear out most of the sidequests, free Baron, maybe even open the hidden Towers. If you haven't done so already, defeat the five Evil Pigs (and do so without taking damage for extra achievements). Their locations:
- Evil Ice Pig: Water Temple (use the Minitta Bell), in the door behind the waterfall between the Mini Temple and Golden Tower.
- Evil Water Pig: Starting Beach - Waterfall of the Heavens, above the rock formation with the stalactite beneath it.
- Evil Ghost Pig: Large Mine Underground - Trolley Entrance, to the right beneath the red pipe.
- Evil Earth Pig: Kujara Ranch - Ranch Area, above the seesaws.
- Evil Flame Pig: Donglin Forest - The Forest Entrance, in a cave that you can swim to on the left side of the area. Note that you must defeat the Evil Ghost Pig before this water is safe to swim in - this is also a good time to collect those three gems skipped previously.
Gem Count: 300 / 310
If you finished with the Evil Flame Pig, walk left out of its cave to end up in the water under Laughing Crying Forest. Jump up to grab a gem above the cave entrance.
There's a small mushroom on the ledge above that entrance - hitting it with a hammer will force multiple gems to jump up out of the water. They're much easier to collect now that you can swim here. I collected four total.
Warp to Large Underground Mine - Pipe Area and go to the chains under the Hot Spring area. Jump from the rightmost chain and glide to the right - there's a floating gem along the far wall (it may be possible to grab this before defeating the Evil Flame Pig if you flap fast enough).
Fall into the secret area under the pipes to find the Small Mud Clump. Wash it off to obtain the Miner's Ring, then return it to the miner just northwest of the Coal-Mining Town's entrance for a gem reward.
The Tower of Strength is hidden in Kujara Ranch - Ranch Area. Inside, you'll find the Torch Hammer, which can be used to break large stone blocks. Take it with you to Kujara Ranch - Ranch Summit. Start by destroying the block in front of the Operations Room.
Note
This next gem seems to be another which is not counted for the Spyromba achievement.
Destroy another block next to the Collector's Room for a huge gem.
Climb the highest ladder into the background layer, then glide across the gap. The stone block which had been blocking this white chest will reveal a gem when destroyed.
In Circus Village, the vendor will ask you for 30 Ice Candies, then five Tiny Pigs. He'll reward you with a gem afterwards.
Gem Count: 310 / 310
That should be all of them! The Spyromba achievement should pop as soon as you collect the final gem.
