Alaska - Bering Sea.
The nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island in Alaska's Fox Archipelago was attacked and captured by Next-Generation Special Forces being led by members of FOX-HOUND.
They're demanding that the government turn over the remains of Big Boss and they say that if their demands are not met within 24 hours, they'll launch a nuclear weapon.
You'll have two mission objectives. First, you're to rescue DARPA chief, Donald Anderson, and the President of ArmsTech, Kenneth Baker. Both are being held as hostages.
Secondly, you're to investigate whether or not the terrorists have the ability to make a nuclear strike... and stop them if they do.
Even decades after its release, Metal Gear Solid is still a sight to behold. It took the gaming world by storm in 1998 with its grandiose story and never-seen-before presentation. Even though it technically wasn't the first game in the Metal Gear series, this is the entry that popularized the name and built the foundations of what was to come next. If this is your first foray into the Metal Gear universe, you're in for a trip!
This set, primarily designed by WilHiteWarrior with support from Edel and Tele, covers the vast majority of what the game has to offer. Currently containing 111 achievements for a total of 1000 points, you'll have to be pretty good to master this game. I'll do my best to guide you.
This guide is split into different sections:
- First, the Walkthrough section will describe every steps necessary to obtain every achievements in an efficient manner. This will be your guideline for every playthrough you'll have to do.
- The Set Up section describes the game's controls and some more obscure functionalities. Be sure to read the section about memory cards, as there's an achievement tied to this.
- Finally, the individual steps will list every achievements by playthrough. I've organized the achievements chronologically, so you can simply check which achievements you need when you arrive at a new area of the game.
Finally, I'd like to thank everyone involved in discussing and posting strategies for the game and its achievements. I couldn't have made it without your help.
All of these achievements are unmissable and will naturally obtained during a normal playthrough, except for the difficulty achievements. You don't need to worry about those, since you'll get all of them if you do the Big Boss run later on.
In your first playthrough, you'll be completing the game casually, achieving a majority of the missable achievements that the set proproses. You'll be saving and reloading to get some conflicting achievements throughout the run.
Note that while you can do some of these in the second playthrough, the main focus of that playthrough will be to complete the game without taking one ration and as little damage as possible. This might some achievements much harder to obtain.
I recommend playing the game on easy or normal for your first two playthroughs. Note that you cannot change the difficulty after you start. You'll be doing two playthroughs on that difficulty, as you'll start the second playthrough from the completed save file of the first one.
If you want an easier time, choose the easy difficulty. The boss patterns are a bit more lenient on easy, which makes some achievements easier. Moreover, your health completely replenishes itself after a boss, which greatly helps with the second playthrough. I did my first two playthroughs on normal, so it's definitely doable on that difficulty, only slightly harder. I really wouldn't recommend going higher than that.
I would highly encourage you to save whenever you enter a new area. Use multiple save slots. This will ensure you don't miss an achievement. Moreover, you'll often have to load a save to get multiple achievements, when an achievement is in contradiction with another one.
I'll be reminding you of this later on, but you'll need to save your progress at the end of the game when it asks you to. You'll continue your second playthrough from that save.

The centerpiece of this playthrough will be to achieve Not THAT Hungry (25). Added to this will be an array of no-damage boss achievements. This will good preparation for your Big Boss run later on.
If you're playing on easy, you're health will be completely filled after boss fights. Aside from that, you'll want to avoid unnecessary alerts as much as possible to minimize the damage you take. It shouldn't be too hard to forgo using rations. Be sure to save often and to reload if you take too much damage. Don't equip your rations, obviously.
You'll be getting the second ending of the game, enabling you to get The Name's Snake. SOLID Snake (25) in a very short run after this one. Again, you'll want to save your game at the end when it asks you to.
⏰Missable achievements⏰
- Not THAT Hungry (25)
- Hurt Me More! (10)
- I Can't Read You! (10)
- Plop Plop Fizz Fizz, Oh What a Relief It Is (3)
- You Rappel Me (10)
- It's a Long Shot, But... (3)
- Flyswatter (10)
All of these achievement are things that don't really fit in a standard playthrough. You can do all of these, except one, whenever you want, as they have no bearing on the other runs.
It might be easier to do the VR missions when you get a bit of experience with the game.
⏰Missable achievements⏰
The Big Boss run will be your ultimate challenge. You'll be starting a new game from a fresh save file for this one.
Here are the requirements to get a Big Boss rank at the end of the game. Most of these can be tracked using the rich presence that's displayed on your RetroAchievements profile.
- Difficulty: extreme
The extreme difficulty can be somewhat punishing. First, you'll have no radar at your disposal, meaning that you'll have to use first-person view a lot more. Enemies will also see and hear you from further away.
As expected, you'll take more damage and deal less damage overall.
Bosses will also be faster and more aggressive with their attacks. Ocelot and the first Sniper Wolf fights are probably the hardest of the bunch.
- Time limit: 3 hours max
Although this might seem like a small amount, the game's timer also counts all the time you spend watching the cutscenes and listening to the codec calls, which adds up to a lot of time. After all, this game is almost 50% cutscenes. You'll be skipping all of those. Unfortunately, you can't skip codec calls in their entirety, but you can mash through them.
Submitting to the torture and going for the Otacon ending is much faster than trying to resist the torture for two full sessions.
You'll need to keep a brisk pace and know where you're going, but it shouldn't be too hard. I'd say that you need to be arrive to the torture room around the 1 hour mark if you're on pace. At the two hour mark, you should be near the Metal Gear fight. For reference, I finished the game in 2h23.
- Continues: None
This means that you cannot use the continue button if you die. Make sure you use the exit button to go back to the main menu and load back a save to continue playing. Instead, you can also restart the emulator.
- Saves: less than 80
This is a very lenient limit. You could basically save in every room and you'd below that requirement.
Take advantage of this limit and save often.
- Alerts: 3-4 or less
Although this might seem forgiving, there are 3 unskippable alerts in the game. These are:
- The Communication Tower Climb
- The moment the PAL Key falls into the ditch
- The escape sequence
There's also an alert that might occur when you escape the torture room, but it can be technically avoided.
To do so, crawl under the bed and go out when Johnny is right in front of the bed. Go behind him and choke him to uncounsciousness or break his neck.
Otherwise, if you take that alert, you can't afford any more.
This effectively means you must avoid all other alerts in the game. Note that gun cameras and wolves don't count as alerts. Only the alert state that appears in the upper right corner of the screen counts.
- Kills: 25 or less
There's a total of 11 absolutely required kills in the game. These are:
- 1 guard during the cell fight with Meryl
- 2 guards in the Vulcan Raven tank
- 1 guard in the elevator fight
- 1 guard in the cargo elevator
- 6 guards during the escape
As this would require using the chokehold method to make enemies kill their friends, a simpler list would be:
- 3 guard during the cell fight
- 2 guards in the Vulcan Raven tank
- 4 guard in the elevator fight
- 3 guards in the tower walkway
- 3 guard in the cargo elevator
- 6 guards during the escape
Total: 21
I added the 3 guards during on the tower walkway, after you rappel down, as these are pretty annoying to deal with, especially if you're low on health. However, you can technically get past them with stun grenades and good dodging skills.
You could also add Johnny to this list, but it is fairly simple to make him unconscious or to run away from him instead of killing him. You might have to forgo that one freebie alert, but it's not too much of a sacrifice.
I would highly suggest not killing any more than this. You're most likely going to kill additional guards during the escape sequence, especially when you blow up the barrels to get out of the garage, rounding up the total close to 25. For reference, I finished my run with 22 guards killed.
You must be careful with this limit. You really don't want to arrive at the escape sequence with not enough leeway to achieve the Big Boss rank.
- Rations: 1 or less
This is one of the toughest requirement, since on the extreme difficulty, you don't recuperate any health after boss fights. This means that you really cannot afford many hits at all. The body armor pickup is almost necessary to survive the cargo elevator fight.
Thankfully, your health gets replenished after certain sections of the game. These are:
- After the torture sequence
- Before you rappel down the Communication Tower
- Before the Metal Gear Rex fight
- Before the Liquid Snake fight
- Before the escape
The biggest threats are the guard fights. You want to take the least damage during the cell fight, the tower climb and the two elevator fights. You should also try to minimize the damage you take during the rappel section.
Some of the early bosses are pretty tough, especially Revolver Ocelot and Sniper Wolf. Try to minimize damage as much as possible, before it gets replenished after the torture sequence.
I recommend watching this very handy playthrough for tips on how to handle every section. It was a massive help during my run.
⏰Missable achievements⏰
- Age Hasn't Slowed You Down One Bit (25)
- Never Be Game Over (25)
- That Ninja (25)
- That Ninja (25)
- Peace Walker (25)
- Little Boss (50)
- The Greatest Soldier of the 21st Century (100)
- Covert Critter (5)
For True Power (10), there are a couple prerequisites you need to take care of before starting the game. In particular, you need to set up your emulator's memory card in a specific way. Additionally, you'll need a save file from another Konami game, which are listed below. I'd highly encourage you to follow these steps.
- A shared Memory Card
This will be different on each emulator, but for Retroarch using Beetle PSX HW, you need to go to:
Quick menu > Core options > Memory Cards
There, you need to set the Memory Card 0 Method
to Mednafen
and to turn on the Shared Memory Cards
option.
With these options enabled, the emulator should switch to using a shared memory card.
If you played the game beforehand and need to convert your saves, you'll need to use MemcardRex. With this tool, you'll be able to extract your save from your Metal Gear Solid memory card file and then import that save into a shared memory card file.
- A save from another Konami game
The save needs to be from a game with the same region as your Metal Gear Solid version. If you're playing on the USA release, you'll need a save from another USA game.
Here's a list of compatible games by region.
- USA
- Broken Helix
- Castlevania Symphony of the Night
- Contra Legacy of War
- Kensei Sacred Fist
- Azure Dreams
- Poy Poy
- Project Overkill
- Silent Hill
- Suikoden
- Vandal Hearts
- UK/PAL
- Broken Helix
- Castlevania Symphony of the Night
- Contra Legacy of War
- Dolphin's Dream
- Azure Dreams
- Poy Poy
- Project Overkill
- Suikoden
- Vandal Hearts
- Japan
- Castlevania Symphony of the Night
- Ganbare Goemon Uchukaizoku Akogingu
- Gokujo Parodiusda Deluxe Pack
- Gradius Deluxe Pack
- Policenauts
- Suikoden
- Snatcher
- Tokimeki Memorial Drama Series Vol.1 Nijiiro no Seishun
- Tokimeki Memorial Forever With You
- Tokimeki Memorial Private Collection
- Vandal Hearts
For all three regions, I'd recommend Castlevania. You can reach reach the first save point in under ten minutes. Use a walkthrough if necessary.
With both of these prerequisites, you should be able to automatically trigger the achievement when you reach a certain point in the game.
- Left joystick / D-pad: moving
- X: crawling
- O: action / punch
- △: first-person view
- ▢: shoot / chokehold / throw
- R2: weapon selection
- L2: item selection
- R1: equip/unequip weapon
- Start: pause
- Select: codec menu
Note that while the joystick is better in most situations, the D-pad can be useful for more precise movements and aiming, especially with the nikita missiles.
-
Many people have made video guides for achievements on the site. If you're struggling with a particular achievement, be sure to check out that particular achievement's page.
-
When you're near an enemy, you can use the square button to put them in a chokehold or throw them down. If you're moving while you press square, you'll do the throw. If you stop before pressing square, you'll put them in a chokehold.
-
After putting an enemy in a chokehold and holding the square button, you can tap the square button again to suppress the ennemy's attempt to get away. If you do this 9 times and release the soldier, they'll drop down unconscious. If you do it 10 times, you'll break their neck and kill them.
-
You can press against walls and press the circle button to knock against it, which will attract enemies to your location.
-
If you press an elevator's button twice to call it, it will come to you instantly.
-
If you have the rations equipped, Snake will automatically consume one if an attack does more damage than his current remaining health.
-
During a certain torture sequence, you'll be advised that using a turbo button is prohibited. The consensus seems to be that the game doesn't care unless your turbo speed is set very high, so feel free to turbo away.
-
You should try calling your crew whenever you enter a new area or when you're having difficulty with something, as they'll often have something interesting to say.
-
When using the Socom or the Famas, if you hold Square and then X, you'll be able to move while having your weapon drawn. You can quickly tap Square to shoot.
-
If you hold the Square button with a weapon selected, Snake will aim at the nearest enemy in his field of view. This can be very useful for certain bosses and the VR missions.
-
If you press R1 twice, Snake will unequip and re-equip the weapon you had, but it will be fully reloaded. This can be very useful in many scenarios.
-
If you continuously press R1 to unequip and re-equip a weapon in quick succession, Snake won't make noise when running on noisy floors.
Each step will list all the achievements associated with a particular section. Read the walkthrough section for more information on a particular step.

Note
Before you start a new game, you can go for the achievement right below. Afterwards, when you start a new game, you need to complete the introductory section, the cargo docks, without getting spotted once before going on the elevator. It's a condition necessary for Missing Something (3), which you'll do in the following area.
Raison D'être (5) Listen to all briefing files (including the secret ones)
This can only be done right after you boot the game and before you load a save. You can reset the emulator otherwise.
If you choose the 'Briefing' option in the main menu, a video will automatically start playing. After you watch it and reach the sub-menu, exit back to the main menu. The first secret video will start playing. You'll be sent back to the main menu afterwards.
Go back into the 'Briefing' section and watch all the other unwatched videos. A video entry should be greyed out after you've watched it. After you've watched them all and try to exit to the main menu, the second secret video will start playing. Watch it to get the achievement.
Note
Remember to make a new save as soon as you gain control of Snake after the elevator ride.
To achieve Can You Shoot Me, Rookie? (5), be sure to skip picking up the SOCOM located in the truck. You'll be picking it up someplace else shortly after.
Wise-Ass Say... (3) Tease Mei Ling until she's had enough of you
You need to call Mei Ling using the codec and pick the 'Do not save' option 6 times in succession to get the achievement.
Wasn't There Just Something There? (2) Run across the heliport and collect the chaff grenades without being seen by the searchlights
⏰MISSABLE⏰
In the middle of the helipad, you should see a pickup box containing chaff grenades. You need to pick it up while running from west to east or vice-versa. You can't pick up the box and retrace your steps back, otherwise the achievement won't trigger.
Wait for the searchlights to move to the sides and make a run for it as soon as the path is clear.
You Look Stunning (2) Collect the stun grenades in the heliport without using chaff grenades or being spotted by the security camera
⏰MISSABLE⏰
The stun grenades are located to the left of the helipad, in a small room with a camera. Go directly under the camera, in its blind spot, and start crawling around the boxes when it moves to the left. Do the same thing in reverse after you get the box. Exit the room to get the achievement.
I Can't Just Knock On the Door and Ask Them To Let Me In (3) Knock on the door and ask them to let you in
Simply run up to the big hangar door north of the helipad and knock against the door to get the achievement.
I've Got Your Stealth Right Here! (10) Survive for five consecutive minutes in alert status [Docks and scripted scenes do not count]
This is achievable at other points in the game, but it's probably easier to get it here. Just to be on the safe side, pick up the extra rations if you need them. There's one to the left of the elevator you rode up on and one to the right of the helipad. Make sure you have the rations equipped so you don't die by mistake.
Go to the middle of the helipad and get spotted by the searchlights. Stay here for 5 minutes, making sure not to leave the searchlights' area so you stay in the alert state.
A single guard will continuously appear. The simplest way to deal with them is to put them in a chokehold as soon as they appear. Periodically give them a squeeze by pressing square so they don't escape your grip. As mentioned in the tips section, if you squeeze the guard 9 times and release them, they'll go unconscious. You can then repeat the process. If the guard dies, be ready to deal with the new guard that spawns. You'll get the achievement when the timer is reached.
Dropping Some Eaves (2) Infiltrate the 1F ventilation duct and listen in on the guards talking about the intruder
⏰MISSABLE⏰
To get this conversation to trigger, you need to:
- Skip picking up the SOCOM
- Trigger one alert during the Helipad section
You shouldn't have picked up the SOCOM if you're following this guide. Trigger at least one alert and then enter the vent to the left of the hangar door on the ground floor. Take a left at the first opportunity and follow the vent until you reach a ration. Squeeze into the small alcove to the right to trigger the conversation.
You'll want to reload the save you made earlier to get the other ventilation ducts achievements.
I'm Not Being Stealthy At All! (2) Infiltrate the 2F ventilation duct and listen in on the guards talking about the intruder
⏰MISSABLE⏰
You need to trigger an alert during the Helipad section for this achievement to trigger. Enter the hangar using the duct accessible by climbing up the stairs to the right of the hangar door. Follow the single path through the vents and you should get the achievement.
Reload your save for the final ventilation duct achievement.
Missing Something (3) Infiltrate either ventilation duct and listen in on the guards without ever having been spotted
⏰MISSABLE⏰
As mentioned earlier, this is only obtainable is you didn't trigger any alert during either the Cargo dock or the Helipad section. If you correctly saved when you first entered the Helipad area and load that save, this should be the case. Enter the hangar by using the second floor ventilation duct. You should get the achievement after the conversation plays out.
You Red My Mind (2) Collect the thermal goggles before locating the DARPA Chief
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This achievement is in conflict with Can You Shoot Me, Rookie? (5), but there's a way around that if you save your game beforehand.
Assuming you came into the hangar using the 2F duct, go into the only open room to the right. There, you'll find the SOCOM, guarded by a camera. Pick it up and make your way back into the ducts. Then, do the same thing again. You'll find the SOCOM has been replaced with the thermal goggles. Pick them up to get the achievement. Then, load the save you made and skip the SOCOM if you still want to get the aforementioned achievement.
Yeah, Work It, Baby... Huh? What Mission? (4) Watch the woman in the cell working out without her pants
⏰MISSABLE⏰
When you enter the ducts in this area, take the second left. The first grate is over the woman's cell. Look down into it with triangle so you can see her. Exit the ducts the way you came in and repeat this process three other times to unlock the achievement.
Piece Be With You (1) Find the SOCOM
Can You Shoot Me, Rookie? (5) Reach the prison battle without obtaining the SOCOM
⏰MISSABLE⏰
If you've been following this guide, you'll obtain the SOCOM during the prison battle section.
As mentioned before, you need to skip every other SOCOM pickup available before this fight. This includes the SOCOM in the truck in Helipad and the one found to the right of the upper floor in the hangar.
Don't Think! Shoot! (10) Kill only one enemy during the prison battle (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
You need to deal with the first wave of guards before the female soldier starts shooting. To do this, put any of the guards in a chokehold, using square, and try to make it so the guard is directly oriented between you and his fellow guards. They should shoot at you, hurting the guard in the process. If you get hit, you'll need to repeat the process, until the guard dies. Repeat this for the second soldier. Finally, you can kill the third guard as you please.
Afterwards, the female soldier will start shooting back. You need to move to the back of the room and run back and forth when they shoot at you. You might get shot a bit, so make sure your rations are equipped. You can tell when a guard is about to shoot when he stops moving his aim. When the guards stop pouring in, you should get the achievement.
Note
This is the first opportunity to collect the first of three boxes, necessary for : You Should Come Inside the Box. Then You'll Know (3). It's in the room with a level 1 door on on the upper floor of the hangar, to the left.
Suppressing My Feelings (1) Collect the suppressor
The suppressor is in a room with a level 1 door on the ground floor of the hangar, to the right. There's a guard closely guarding the item. Choke him out and pick up the box.
See? Four! (2) Collect the C4 in the armory and blow open all hidden entrances
The C4 is in the top middle room on that floor. There are 6 walls to blow up with it. You can spot them by their blue discoloration compared to the surrounding walls. If you knock on them, they'll also make a different sound than usual.
Two of them are in on the northern wall, on each side of the elevator. The last four are on the way to Ocelot's boss room. The one you might miss is on the right wall just before Ocelot's room.
You're Pretty Good! (10) Defeat Ocelot before he can reload his gun (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This achievement and the one below are pretty tricky. Ocelot will run around and shoot at you before reloading his gun when it's empty. He's very quick and it's pretty hard to catch up to him if he gets away from you. Because of this, you'll need to get close to him and they close as you shoot at him. Otherwise, he'll get away from you and quickly reload his gun.
You should get acquainted with the run and gun mechanic before this fight, which is mentioned in the tips section. Aiming is very hard while in this state, so you'll want to line up to Ocelot in a straight line before shooting at him. Pay close attention to your laser pointer, it should show the red dot on him when he's directly in your sights.
Here's a video walkthrough that shows one way of doing this.
I Give Up. Why? (10) Defeat Revolver Ocelot using only the SOCOM, firing no more than 12 bullets (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
I recommend using the above strategy again, if you didn't get it with the other achievement. This time you can't miss a single shot. Again, make sure to stick close the Ocelot and shoot at him once you can see the red dot on him.
Uno Mas (2) Collect the FAMAS and ammo in the armory without tripping the sensors
⏰MISSABLE⏰
The FAMAS is located in the lower right room of the armory. Equip your thermal goggles or your cigarettes to be able to see the sensors. You simply need to crawl under the sensor lines, pick up the box and go back again to get the achievement.
Knock Knock Knockin' On Heaven's Door (4) Plant a C4 on the wall and lure a guard to it by knocking on the wall
You can do this anywhere. Simply knock on a wall when a guard is nearby, quickly plant a charge and move away before blowing it up when the guard is near.
Special Delivery (4) Blow up a guard with a C4 explosive when he lifts your box
It can be somewhat random whether a guard tries to lift your box or moves away after saying "Huh, it's just a box". You get more success when you're directly in a guard's path. Set down a C4 charge directly below you, get in the box and blow the charge when the guard lifts your box, when you can use the detonator.
Otherwise, you can also do this when you're in an evasion state. In that sate, if a guard spots you in a box, they'll always try to lift the box.
Clayless (3) Collect every claymore in the Canyon before the tank battle without using the mine detector
⏰MISSABLE⏰
There are five mines in total. If you have the thermal goggles, you can spot them. Four of them are in front of you, three of which are in line with the marks in the snow. You need to crawl over the mines to safely acquire them. Start by crawling over the right side, directly in line with the marks. You should acquire two of them. Do the same thing for the left side to acquire the next two. The southern one is a bit more left than the other, so you might need to pass over again. The final mine is on the left side of the area. From the south, run until you reach the ration. Then, start crawling a bit further north. You should pick up the final mine around there.
Down the Hatch! (10) Destroy the tank with only two grenades (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This can be a bit tricky. The grenades' throw distance is controlled by two things: your movement speed and the amount of time you 'cook' the grenade by holding the weapon button. You want the top of the tank with the gunner to be the closest to you before you attempt to throw a grenade.
You can use other explosives to help you. The chaff grenade will help you get close to the tank and the C4 or the claymore can be used to destroy the tank's tracks, making it move much slower.
If you're having trouble, there is a method to quickly destroy the tank in the video available on the achievement's page.
You Pissed Me Off (4) Plant a C4 on a soldier's back while he's urinating and blow him up
As soon as you get to this floor, go left and enter the bathroom at the end of the hallway. A guard will be urinating. Step right behind him with your C4 equipped and you should be able to plant a charge on his back. Step away and blow them up to get the achievement.
Maggie Q (1) Collect the Nikita launcher
With the Level 3 keycard in hand, the Nikita can be acquired in one of the rooms to the right of the main section.
Boom Box (4) Lure a guard into your claymore with the box without hurting yourself in the explosion
This can be achieved anywhere with guards. Pick out a guard and watch the path they walk around. When they walk away, put a claymore there. Move about two running steps away from the mine and get into the box, so that you'll be visible to the guard and out of the claymore's range. The guard should get curious about the box and walk into the mine, granting you the achievement.

Remotely Possible (3) Take out the electric panel in one shot (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This one isn't too difficult, but you might want to look at the video on the achievement's page if you don't know the route. You can press triangle after you shoot the missile to change the view, which might make it easier. If you don't move your joystick, the missile will accelerate. On the other hand, if you continuously move it, the missile will move slowly, which helps in tight areas.
Go straight down, then left and then up, hugging the right wall. You should speed up when you're in front of gun cameras so you don't get shot down. When you get close to the north wall, you need to veer left into the door before making a right into the rooms. When you close in on the panel, wiggle your joystick left and right so you don't accidentally accelerate into a wall.
Hey Dum-Dum. You Give Me Gum-Gum (3) Found a Moai
The Moai can be seen in the first locked room with a level 3 door in the hallway where you first encounter the gas. Stand in front of it to get the achievement.
This Stinks (1) Collect the gas mask
It can be acquired in the third locked room with a level 3 door in the same hallway. There's a camera watching over it.
"Fisher Wuz Here"...? (2) Collect the night-vision goggles at your earliest opportunity
⏰MISSABLE⏰
The goggles are available after you receive the level 4 keycard. They're in the gas section where you flew your nikita missile up to the panel. They're in the last door on the right side of the hallway. Watch out for the gun cameras.
Just Photographs, Do Not Engage the Enemy (2) Locate the camera on a new game file
⏰MISSABLE⏰
The camera is behind a level 4 door in a hallway right next to Ocelot's boss room. You should have blown up the part of the wall to access it earlier. Throw a chaff to avoid the gun cameras.
Wraith Stranding (10) Capture a photo of the ghost of Hideo Kojima
You need to take a photo of the north wall with the picture of the three mechas. You can't actually see Kojima when you take the picture in-game, it only appears when you view the photo in the Special menu. The achievement should unlock anyway.
Note
This is the first opportunity to collect the second of three boxes, necessary for You Should Come Inside the Box. Then You'll Know (3). It's in the upper left room in the central section.
He's the Bomb! (4) Plant a C4 on a guard's back and get another guard with the explosion
I found this section to be the easiest place to get this achievement. If you put a C4 charge on a guard and then get discovered by that guard (one that's not Meryl), you can lead them to the bathroom and hide at the back. Two guards should be clumped together, making it easy to blow them up for the achievement.
So Feminine (3) Follow Meryl into the bathroom before she can finish... preparing
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Try alerting Meryl when she's lower than you on the screen. When you do, run out of the room and turn right towards the ladies' bathroom. Only Meryl can open the door. When she does, start running and head to the last stall as quickly as possible.
Lady in Red (4) Make Meryl blush until she's about the color of a tomato before encountering Psycho Mantis
⏰MISSABLE⏰
After the cutscene in the bathroom, stand close to Meryl and look at her in first-person view. She should start commenting about you looking at her. She'll turn redder each time. You'll get the achievement after a few minutes.
True Power (10) Mantis knows what games you enjoy
⏰MISSABLE⏰
If you followed the steps in this earlier step about setting up your memory card and having a save from another Konami game, this should unlock after the cutscene before the fight. Be sure not to skip the cutscene, otherwise the achievement won't unlock.
It's Wireless! (10) Defeat Psycho Mantis using the other method
⏰MISSABLE⏰
For this method, you need to exhaust the dialog with Colonel Campbell during the fight until he tells you to plug the controller into port 2. Instead of doing that, you need to die and to select Continue
on the death screen. Afterwards, when you start the fight again, call Campbell again and he'll tell you how you can destroy both statues to make Psycho Mantis vulnerable.
Shoot down both marble statues at each end of the room. This will allow to hurt Psycho Mantis. Win the fight and the achievement will unlock.
Poppin Pills (2) Collect the Diazepam in the cave
The diazepam is in a small cave that requires crawling to access. Its entrance is on the south wall of the small passage with the wolves. It's right next to the passage that leads you to Meryl and the next section.
Puppy Love (3) The puppy has claimed your box for his own. Hand it over
⏰MISSABLE⏰
You want to select a box in your inventory and unequip it. Punch Meryl and as soon as you do, re-equip it. The small dog should pee on it and you'll get the achievement. As a bonus, equipping the box will let you travel in this area without alerting the wolves.
Yes, Only a Little (3) Reunite with Meryl across the minefield in two seconds flat
⏰MISSABLE⏰
After the cutscene where Meryl travels through the small minefield, run straight up as soon as get control of Snake.
Important
This is a great time to pick up the thermal goggles if you haven't yet. They're in the tank hangar, in a room to the right with a level 4 door. If you don't get them, you won't be able to get the achievement Not a Real Man (2).
She's Dead By Now (3) Collect the PSG-1 and both boxes of ammo without tripping the sensors
⏰MISSABLE⏰
The PSG-1 is in the top-left room behind the level 5 door. Equip the thermal goggles and start crawling from the bottom towards the top. Try to follow the line made by the fallen barrel before slowly making your way to the top. Make sure not to forget the ammo box hidden to the left behind the barrels.
Just Say No (10) Defeat Sniper Wolf without using Diazepam or rations (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
As soon as you get into the room, run to the left wall. Make sure the PSG-1 is your quick equip slot. Hug the wall that's toward Sniper Wolf to see what's she's doing. You only want to come out when she's hiding behind the vertical beam, right before she stops aiming at you.
Come out, make sure Snake is looking dead ahead and quickly equip the PSG-1. Adjust your aim upward and wait for her to come out. Your aim should shake a bit but it should hopefully subside before she decides to take aim. You might find that using the D-Pad instead of the joystick is better to make smaller adjustments to your aim.
There's also a trick to have a few seconds of normal aim. If you quickly unequip and re-equip the PSG-1, you'll have about 3 seconds of steady aim. You can repeat this until Sniper Wolf comes out of hiding.
If your hear her take aim before your ready, quickly retreat behind the wall. Do the same thing if she decides to move from the beam while you're getting ready.
Rat Trap (3) Kill the rats until you get scolded for it
The rats are right above the area where Sniper Wolf was shooting at you. From about the same position you where in, you should be able to take aim at the rats and steady your aim with a diazepam.
You can shoot slightly above a rat and it should still die. There's a small delay between firing and your bullet hitting the rat, so it's easier to shoot at the ones that are moving slowly.
Note
Your choice in this section will determine some of the achievements obtainable during the current playthrough. This guide assumes you're going to resist the torture. As such, I'll only list the achievements obtainable with this route. The achievements accessible by surrendering to the torture will be obtained during your second playthrough.
I've Been Through a Lot Worse (5) Resist the torture and escape the prison
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This is only obtainable if you resist the torture.
Here are the ways you can escape:
- Call Otacon when you reach your cell. He should get to you after your second round of torture. He'll come give you a pack of ketchup. When the guard goes to the bathroom, use the ketchup while crawling. It'll make the guard think you died and he'll open the door.
- While the guard is in the bathroom, you can hide under the bed. When he comes back, he'll think you escaped and he'll unlock the door.
- You can keep on enduring the rounds of torture and eventually a friend will come to spring you out.
Party Pooper (2) Kill Johnny Sasaki
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Johnny is the cell guard. Kill him while escaping the cell by breaking his neck to get this achievement. If you make him lose consciousness, he becomes invulnerable, so don't bother punching him or throwing him around.
Chickenshit (3) Escape the cell without killing or knocking out Johnny Sasaki
⏰MISSABLE⏰
When you escape the cell, run away from Johnny and open the door of the torture chamber with your keycard. When you get to the center of the room, a cutscene will start playing. You'll get the achievement after it ends.
Your Biggest Fan (3) Receive a hidden call from Deepthroat
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This is only obtainable if you resist the torture.
After you escape your cell and get your equipment back, you'll have a mysterious 'Timer B' in your items. Don't do anything with it yet. When the timer reaches 60, you'll get a call from Deepthroat. You'll get the achievement then. Don't forget to actually throw the bomb out afterwards.
Not a Real Man (2) Collect the body armor at the first available location
⏰MISSABLE⏰
As mentioned earlier, you need to pick up the thermal goggles from the tank hangar before you get captured after the Sniper Wolf fight. Otherwise, they'll replace the initial body armor pickup.
The body armor is located in the gas area, in the left hallway. It's in the first door to the right. Beware of the cameras.
I'm the Stair Master! (10) Climb the communications tower without killing anyone (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
When the chase sequence starts, be sure to grab the two items in front of you, you'll need them later. Equip your rations and stun grenades and start running up the stairs.
You'll want to throw stun grenades liberally while you run up. You'll encounter a few guards ahead of you; it's sometimes easier to unequip your grenades and throw them down before continuing on your way.
Open Sez Me (2) Open the lower walkway door at the communications tower
Right behind where you land after you rappel down is a stuck door. You can hear it beep if you have your keycard equipped. Pull out some C4 and blow up the door and you'll get the achievement.
This May Sting a Little (2) Collect the stinger missile launcher and collect 20 missiles before facing the Hind
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Right after you enter the second tower, you'll find the stinger with a box of missiles. When you reach the top of the stairs, you'll find three other boxes, maxing out your missile ammo.
Monologue (4) Feel the shame of using a mono TV
⏰MISSABLE⏰
For this achievement, you'll need to go back to the main menu and go into the option menu. There, set your sound setting to mono instead of stereo.
When you start the fight with the Hind-D, call Campbell twice in a row. Your second conversation with him should be about how you can use sound to spot the chopper. You'll get the achievement at the end of the call.
I'm Nuclear (2) Learn about Nastasha's past
⏰MISSABLE⏰
After the Hind-D fight, call Nastasha twice. Your first call should be how you fought the Hind-D. The second conversation starts with "As long as the strategy of nuclear deterrence continues, nuclear weapons may be reduced, but they will never be eliminated". Listen to the whole conversation to get the achievement.
This is obtainable after the Hind D fight, but other people have reported getting it at other points, especially after boss fights. If you can't get it here, try calling her again at other points in the game.
Before We Get Started, Does Anybody Wanna Get Out? (10) Survive the tower elevator ride without using any weapons (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Equipping the body armor might be useful for this section. When the fight starts, you might be able to throw one guard against the others, leaving one of them standing. Put that guard in a chokehold and break his neck. Repeat the process until no one is left standing.
Moving Target (3) Shoot Sniper Wolf while she's running in Snowfield using the PSG-1 (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Sniper Wolf is pretty fast and there's no real pattern to her movement. She'll always move after being shot, but she'll most likely still be invulnerable at that stage. Be sure to aim at Sniper Wolf continuously after taking a diazepam. When she decides to move, hold the direction she's heading towards with your joystick and unload all your bullets in her path. With a bit of luck, one of those bullets should hit her.
But I'm Better (10) Defeat Sniper Wolf in the Snowfield using only the PSG-1 without missing a single shot (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
There's no real trick to this. Take a diazepam and start shooting. If you run out, wait for your aim to stop shaking before shooting, if possible. You can lay down in the bottom center of the snowfield without bothering with cover, if you want to have as wide a field of view as possible. The body armor will help with that.
I Missile You (10) Defeat Sniper Wolf in the snowfield using only the Nikita Launcher using no more than 50% of your missiles fuel (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Move to the bottom right of the map, where there's a small cliff protecting you. Get out your Nikita Launcher and shoot towards the left. Right after you do, press triangle to go into first-person with the missile. You'll see Sniper Wolf highlighted in your HUD, as well as your fuel reserve in the top left.
You should spend as much time as possible at full-speed, only moving to readjust your orientation. You need to move the missile to one of the slopes to the right or to the left of the map so your missile can climb up a bit. When you reach her, you aren't obliged to crash into her. If you crash into a tree, the area of effect of the explosion can hurt her too.
If you feel like you're going to spend more than 50% of your fuel, simply press R1 to make your missile explode before reaching her and try again.
There Are No Strings On Me (4) Discover the parachute
⏰MISSABLE⏰
The parachute is located to the bottom right of the snowfield, stuck in a tree outside the fence, right next to one of the buildings. You'll get a call from Campbell when you spot it in first-person view.
You Should Come Inside the Box. Then You'll Know (3) Use the box to hitch a ride to the Heliport, Nuke Building and Snowfield in one session
You'll finally have access to the last box, which is located to the left of the snowfield, inside the building closest to the truck. To get the achievement, you need to use the trucks to travel to each location in one session.
Simply get in the truck's bed, towards the edge, and equip one of the boxes and stay still for about five seconds. You should trigger a cutscene and get transported to the location the box indicates in the item menu. Repeat for the other two locations.
Important
Before you leave this section, make sure you have triggered more than 10 alerts. Check the rich presence on your RetroAchievements profile. If the number next to ❗ is 10 or below, you should farm alerts during this section or an earlier one. Otherwise, you won't be able to unlock This Job Stinks (3) during this playthrough.
I Know Now Why You Cry (3) Knock an enemy into the blast furnace
Snake always throws the enemy behind him, so you want your back against the railing and the enemy in front of you. Being close to the railing works best. The walkway towards the back of the room is a good place to do this.
Crane Kick (3) Destroy the crane in the blast furnace
The walkway to the left of this area from where you start leads you to a small ledge you can walk against. The crane will be blocking your path to the north. Take out your Nikita Missiles and shoot it twice to make it go down.
Have a Nice Trip (10) Defeat the enemies on the freight elevator without using any weapons or snapping any necks (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Yet again, you'll need to throw the enemies over the railing. Same tips as before: stand as close to the railing as possible with your back to it, with the enemy in front of you. Equip your body armor to minimize damage.
Nevermore (2) Listen to a poem from Master Miller
⏰MISSABLE⏰
As you activate the second elevator down, wait for about three seconds after you regain control of Snake before calling Miller. You need to call him before he calls you, otherwise you won't get the achievement.
If you call too early, he'll only give you generic advice. You can try calling him again afterwards.
A Murder of Crows (3) Kill the ravens until you get scolded for it
After you reach the very bottom of the elevator, throw a stun grenade and prepare your C4. Try to run where a group of crows landed. Put the C4 down and wait a bit for them to get back up before exploding the charge. Repeat this and you'll eventually get a call, granting you the achievement.
Mind-Meld (10) Defeat Vulcan Raven using only traps without alerting him (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Vulcan Raven follows a set path, depending on the difficulty, but you don't need to memorize it. I found that using claymores was the simplest method. Try to put down the claymores towards the center of the room, where the paths intersect. Make sure you always keep track of where Vulcan is heading towards, so you don't get spotted. If he's at the back of the room, you can press against a wall to get a view down the room.
Use the mine detector so you don't step on the mines yourself. It's only a matter of time until he steps on them, so be patient. Watch out so you don't box yourself in with your own mines. In case of emergency, you can crawl over them to get them back.
Eating Crow (10) Defeat Vulcan Raven using only missiles without taking damage (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
There's an easy strategy to stun-lock Vulcan Raven with the Nikita Missiles. I'll let this video speak for itself. Raven's position changes with the difficulty, so be sure to apply the strategy relevant to you.
This Job Stinks (3) Find the PAL key in the drainage ditch
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This achievement is missable since it can only be unlocked if you've had more than ten alerts when you reach the cutscene in this section.
If you've had 10 alerts or less, you'll unlock Covert Critter (5) instead. It's not a huge deal, but it's easier to farm alerts in this playthrough, since you'll be strapped for time or health in the next ones.
Take a Shot (5) Shoot Liquid Snake while he is inside REX using the PSG-1 (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Right after the second phase of the fight starts, when the cockpit is open, you'll want to throw a stun grenade and run betwen Rex's feet. Liquid will lose sight of you and he'll continuously turn around, looking for you.
You want to go to the opposite side of the arena from where Rex is standing. When you're there, take a diazepam and aim for the cockpit. It might take a while for Rex to turn around and expose the cockpit.
If you can't aim high enough, reposition yourself so you aren't discovered when Rex turns around and go to another end of the arena. Try to get as much distance as possible between you and Rex.
The Only Thing I Was Ever Good At (10) Destroy Metal Gear REX without taking damage (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Both phases of the fight follow the same pattern. If you're too far from Rex, it will shoot at you with some missile. If you get closer, it will switch to its machine gun or the laser. Closer still and he'll try to stump you.
At the start, prepare the stinger in your quick-equip slot and shoot at the radome as soon as you can lock on to it.
For the whole fight, what you want to do is to continuously run closer and farther from Rex, crossing an invisible line that extends away from Rex. You can estimate this line as being the area the missile explode at if you're close enough to Rex.
If you're across that line, Rex will always fire missiles. When he does, you run back towards him to avoid the missiles, quickly shoot the radome and run back towards the line. If done correctly, Rex will shoot its machine gun and follow up with the missiles. You can repeat this for the whole fight.
Try to keep to the center of Rex so he doesn't turn around too much, as that changes the range the missiles can reach.
Bleed the Lizard (10) Defeat Liquid Snake in 1:45 or less
⏰MISSABLE⏰
You'll need to master the infinite punch method to be able to reach the time limit. For this, you'll need to continuously throw two punches in quick succession, followed by a short pause. Repeat until you Liquid only has a sliver of health left. He needs a kick to be thrown off the edge at that point to end the fight.
You might need a lot of practice to get this down, as the rhythm is pretty tricky. Look at this set up for a bit of help. You don't need the exact position shown in the video to do the combo. Even if Liquid runs away, you can try setting up the combo again, if you have enough time left.
If you're having trouble with the punching timing, a metronome set to 160 BPM can help keep up with the rhythm.
Yeah, It's Over (10) Shoot Liquid Snake 10 times in a row without allowing him hit you once
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Liquid's hitbox during this section is pretty small, so it can be easy to miss him even tough it seems like you're firing directly at him. Always keep shooting and go into first-person view during this sequence. Try to wiggle your aim to the left and right so your shots cover a larger area of his body.
During the first phase, he'll continuously dodge your shots from left to right. You have to keep up with him, quickly adjusting your aim to where he's moving to. Try to shoot a tiny bit ahead of where he's moving towards, leading your shots in his direction.
In the second phase, he'll pull up behind you. When he bumps you, you need to quickly recenter your aim on him. Again, it might help to wiggle a bit from left to right.
When he moves to your side, it's more of the same. You need to be pretty precise about where you aim.
Enjoy Life (25) Escape Shadow Moses with Meryl
⏰MISSABLE⏰
You'll get this if you complete the game while having resisted the torture sequence.
Important
You absolutely want to save your game after the credits when the game asks you to. You'll be starting from this save for your second playthrough. Otherwise, you won't be able to achieve The Name's Snake. SOLID Snake (25).
As mentioned above, you want to start your second playthrough from the save you made at the end of your first playthrough. Simply load the 'Docks' save to get going.
Not THAT Hungry (25) Complete the game without using any rations
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Pretty self-explanatory. Refer to the walkthrough section for tips on how to achieve this.
Hurt Me More! (10) Defeat the ninja without taking damage (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This fight isn't too hard once you understand how the ninja fights, but it might take you a few tries. The ninja has 5 stages.
-
Simply rush him once the fight starts and hit him with the punch-punch-kick combo. Do this again when he jumps back.
-
This is the hardest phase. At first, the ninja will rush at you. You need to hit him with a combo very fast, otherwise he'll lunge a you with a kick. After an attack, he'll often jump around two or three times. The second jump will be towards you. If you run in a wide circle around him, it might be possible to avoid him. If you're quick enough, you can punch him after this lunge, which is often the safest option.
-
He'll start playing hide-and-seek with you. He has 4 hiding spots.
- Up left, beside a locker.
- Up right, beside a locker.
- In the middle, in the small passage between the two upper consoles.
- In the bottom right, near the wall. This one might be hard to reach quickly.
If you're fast enough, run to him and hit him with a combo. Otherwise, he'll come rushing at you. Be prepared to quickly hit him or try to avoid his lunge with a wide circle.
-
This phase his one of the easiest. The ninja will walk towards you and teleport a few paces away when you get near, followed by a punch. Simply run towards him, run away from where he teleports and hit him when he finishes punching the air.
-
This is when he starts buzzing with electricty. It's deceptively easy to make a mistake in this phase if you get too close to him. You want to stay clear of him, mostly towards the bottom of the screen, and shoot at him with one your weapons. Grenades also work.
I Can't Read You! (10) Defeat Psycho Mantis without taking damage (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This achievement only starts counting after Psycho Mantis reads your mind.
At first, Mantis will fly around the room while cloaked. You can see where he will appear by pressing the first-person view button or simply using your thermal goggles. You can shoot him when he appears, but it can be risky if you miss your shot. If you want to be safe, simply move out of the way of the ball he throws at you.
Then, he will start throwing furniture at you. You need to understand each attack and where it starts from, because the furniture can hit you when mantis summons it and when it returns to its original position. These attacks always follow the same order.
- The chairs are from the bottom right. Mantis will spin them around him in small to large circles. Stay to the sides to avoid getting hit.
- The two marble statues will each swing in an arc in front of the desk. They're pretty hard to avoid, so you shouldn't hang around this area.
- The two little egg are from a table to the upper right. They'll each move towards you one at a time. Make a large circle around them.
- The three sets of antlers are from the upper left. Mantis will launch them towards you. Move a bit to the side of the center piece to avoid getting it or simply crawl to avoid them.
- The paintings on the north wall will come down and sweep a majority of the room vertically. Hang to the side of the room to avoid getting it.
Note that all these attacks can be avoided by crawling on the floor.
Midway throw the fight, Mantis will resurrect Meryl. Throw a stun grenade directly on her to knock her down instantly. Then, when he makes her put the gun against her head, unequip your weapon and throw her down to knock her uncounscious.
Mantis will then start throwing balls at you while invisible. Use the same strategy as before. Finally, he'll start to combine attacks, which can be very dangerous. One of them combines the antlers and the eggs while the other combines the chairs and the paintings. It'd definitely advise you to crawl during the antlers + eggs combo, since it's very dangerous. The other one can be safely avoided by going on the left side of the room.
Plop Plop Fizz Fizz, Oh What a Relief It Is (3) Catch cold and then cure it with the medicine
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This is only obtainable if you surrender to the torture sequence.
You can escape the prison normally after Otacon comes to visit you. You won't catch the cold right away, but you can make your way to the Nuke Building B1 regardless. In the central room, the office in the middle left will have the cold medicine. Wait there until Snake starts sneezing and take the medecine to unlock the achievement.
You Rappel Me (10) Complete the rappel section without taking damage more than twice
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This can be pretty hard. The rappeling controls leave a lot to be desired. It's very easy to lose control of Snake and get damaged.
You should use the D-Pad for this section. Always do big jumps with a down-right or down-left direction and focus on landing on the beams, which provide a safe landing zone. Momentum from continuously jumping from left to right can help you clear dangerous areas. You can also walk down the beams, but that's of limited use.
I'll leave you to watch this video walkthrough, as I'm not sure I can't give more advice than this.
It's a Long Shot, But... (3) Defeat the soldiers at the tower walkway using only the PSG-1 without taking damage
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Right after you rappel down the wall, there will be a walkway with three soldiers at the end. Move a bit to the side of the railing so you're out of the way of the walkway itself and pull out your PSG-1. You'll be able to shoot down the guards through the railing safely without getting damaged, as they can only shoot within the space of the walkway.
Flyswatter (10) Shoot down the Hind without taking damage (No Bandana)
⏰MISSABLE⏰
For this fight, you always want to stay close to the rectangular block at the top of the area. When the Hind is shooting at you, stay close to the opposite wall and you should avoid any damage. The Hind moves around a bit, so be sure to adjust your position accordingly.
In the first phase, the Hind will fly around in the sky and do an occasional shooting run at you. When it's flying around, take out your Stinger and shoot a missile at it. Run back behind the block to avoid its conterattack. Sometimes, you might have to get a bit closer to the edge of the building since the stinger's ranger is limited.
In the second phase, the Hind will drop down to the sides of the building and pop up after a bit, shooting at you. This shooting run is pretty long, so hide behind the block as before. When you hear and see the Hind pass over you, it should be safe to shoot at it. Hide back behind the block and repeat the process.
Once in a while, the Hind will shoot a volley of missiles at you. Hide to the left of the block and the missiles shouldn't damage you.
When the Hind's health is low, it'll add a new but similar pattern to its attacks. It will pop out for a quick shooting run before dropping back down again. You might be able to shoot at it when it stops shooting, but be sure it's not the longer attack pattern, otherwise you might get hit.
Hal and Dave (10) Escape Shadow Moses with Otacon
You'll get this if you complete the game while having surrendered to the torture sequence.
Important
Again, you want to save your game after the credits when the game asks you to. With this save, you'll now be able to achieve The Name's Snake. SOLID Snake (25), which is described in the following section.
Video Game Player, Huh? (25) Complete all VR missions
NANOMACHINES, SON!! (50) Rank #1 in all VR Missions
Getting first place in certain stages can be a bit tricky. Survival mode is by far the hardest VR mission.
During the training and time attack mode, it's sometimes faster to throw down a guard than to sneak past them. During the gun shooting and survival stages, be sure to use the quick aim mechanic to kill guards
Look at the following videos if you are having trouble with a stage.
On the Road Again (10) Successfully resist the torture scene and escape without having saved for the entire game
⏰MISSABLE⏰
Eat Nails and Ask For Seconds (25) Successfully resist five torture sessions on Extreme difficulty
⏰MISSABLE⏰
You'll get both of the above achievements in a mini-playthrough, which I think is the most convenient way to go about it.
Create a new safe file and select the extreme difficulty. Make sure you don't make any save during this run. Go through the inital portion of the game until you enter the hangar and reach floor B1. There, you'll do a simple glitch to skip all the way to the torture section of the game.
It should be fairly simple to do. Since you don't have a radar, it might take a minute to reach the loading zone, as you're effectively blind, but you should make it without too much hassle.
When you arrive to the torture room, you'll have to endure a bunch of torture. I highly recommend you use some sort of turbo function, since your health bar doesn't leave you with much room to play. After you resists the final torture sequence, a friend will come spring you out.
The Name's Snake. SOLID Snake (25) Infiltrate Shadow Moses in style
This is only achievable once you've reached both game endings on the same save file.
After you've finished the two other playthroughs, load the save you made at the end of the second one. The 'Docks' file should be colored red. Go through the docks section and enter the elevator. Don't skip the cutscene. As Snake removes his suit to reveal his sweet attire, you'll get this achievement.
Age Hasn't Slowed You Down One Bit (25) Complete the game in less than 3 hours
Never Be Game Over (25) Complete the game without using any continues
⏰MISSABLE⏰
That Ninja (25) Complete the game with no more than 4 alerts

The Greatest Soldier of the 21st Century (100) Earn the Big Boss rank on a new game file (No stealth camo or bandana)

All of these are pretty self-explanatory. See the walkthrough section for tips on how to complete a successful Big Boss run. If you've done everything correctly, you should achieve all of these at the end of the game, during the results screen.
Covert Critter (5) Take the PAL key back from the rat
⏰MISSABLE⏰
This is only obtainable if you've gotten 10 alerts or less at this point. It should be the case if you're going for the Big Boss rank.
The rat can be a bit hard to find. It's hiding somewhere on the ground floor. If you take your stinger out, you should see a square showing if the rat is in your field of view. Scan around with it to help you find this little fellow. In my experience, it's either around the camera to the left, around the ladder to the right or down the short stairs to the waterway.
When you find it, don't approach it, because it will scamper away. Shoot it with the stinger and you'll be able to retrieve the PAL key.
