(WIP) EarthBound - RetroAchievements/guides GitHub Wiki
Set Difficulty | 5 |
Approximate time to master | 20-30 hours |
Minimum numbers of playthroughs needed | 1, plus a second playthrough of the final dungeon. |
Number of missable achievements | 30* |
Hardest achievement of the set | Pre-Teen Crisis (5) |
*Do note that while not being marked as such, most achievements are missable, since you cannot return after entering the final dungeon. Make sure you are fully prepared before heading there.
EarthBound. What else do you want me to say? It's one of the all-time greats of the Super Nintendo? Well, yes, that is true. Its influence has inspired countless projects such as UNDERTALE? Well, yes, that is also true.
I know what you're really here for, though. You want to complete this silly game and add another shiny gold (or silver) badge to your profile. Well, lucky for you... uh... this guide exists.
I will be splitting this off by sanctuary, with an extra section added for Cave of the Past. These achievements are in the order that I obtained them, but the order can differ, especially if sanctuaries are done later.
!! IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE !!
- Make sure to save at least one trash can for the Pre-Teen Crisis achievement. If you have teleport, go straight to that location and get the achievement.
- Every photo must be obtained. You can use this photo guide to help with finding every location.
- A general rule of thumb is to explore each area to find every present or trash can. I will be providing maps at the needed areas, however.
- Make sure you have done EVERYTHING before entering the final dungeon. If not, you will have to do a complete playthrough again just to get anything you missed.
- I will add a section describing the optimal setup for the final dungeon. It doesn't help for achievements, but it does make your life easier, especially since you have to play through it twice.
You'll Catch Cold Dressed Like That! (1) Head out in your PJs
Do not talk to your mom when you go out for the first time. (Missable)
Earthbound Gamers Do It One-handed (3) Go out at night and investigate the loud noise ... using only your left hand
If you didn't know, almost the whole game can be played using only the D-pad and the L button. You can even eat pizza with the other hand while you play! (Missable)
Buzzkill (1) Mourn the loss of a friend
You'll get this after Buzz Buzz dies.
It's a Secret to Everybody (2) Find the Secret Clubhouse
In the northernmost part of Onett, there is a secret passage in the trees.
It's recommended you go here anyways, since you get a Mr. Baseball Cap. You need all the defense you can get for Frank and his gang.
Trashburger? (1) Just brush it off a little, it'll be fiiiine
There's a trash can with a Hamburger in it near the Burger Shop in Onett.
That Was Easy! (1) Get your first insta-win
By Level 4, you should be able to instantly kill Coil Snakes. All that's needed here is a bit of grinding.
Jumping the Sharks (3) Put an end to the Sharks' reign of tyranny
You'll get this after defeating the Sharks in the Arcade. Make sure your defense is really good for Frank.
Your Sanctuary I (5) Claim Giant Step
You'll get this after getting the melody for Giant Step. Try to grind off of Attack Slugs until you're at least Level 8 for the Titanic Ant.
Is This Legal? (4) Face-off against the Onett Police Force and win
No, it's not. You'll get this one after beating up the Onett Police Force. Make sure to bring a lot of Hamburgers.
Nifty Presents for Ness (5) Loot all gift boxes in Onett and Giant Step
Get every present box in Onett. They are as follows:
- The Cracked Bat in Tracy's room.
- The Bread Roll on the mountainside.
- The Skip Sandwich in Giant Step.
- The Cold Remedy in Giant Step.
- The Hamburger in Giant Step.
- The Hamburger on the path to Twoson.
Onett Giant Step You can use these maps to help. Every item location is labelled.
Retro Achievement (5) Tame a New-Age Retro Hippie (No Auto-Win)
Sometimes you just gotta beat up a hippie. You can usually find them around the southern part of Twoson.
If I Give You This, Will You Go Away?!? (5) Bother the man at the Twoson Hotel
There's a man sitting at a table in the Twoson Hotel. Keep pestering him until he gives you $50. Good for a stay at the hotel!
Ding-Ding! (1) Ring the Bell while riding your bike
Press the R button while on the bike.
These Are Free, Right? (1) Eat a condiment all by itself
There's a condiment shop in Burglin Park. Simply buy something such as a ketchup packet and eat it.
Oh, Come Now, He's Not All That Bad... (5) Invest in Orange Kid
You got $200 yet?
Harvest Moon (5) Buy a Fresh Egg and sell it for 110 dollars with the 'For Sale' sign
This one's a bit more complex. You have to buy the For Sale sign in Burglin Park, then buy an egg. Walk around until it hatches into a Chicken (you should hear strange beeping noises), then place the For Sale sign down. Someone should come running, and you can give them the Chicken for $110. This is a very efficient way to make money if you need it.
Insatiable Sweet Tooth (2) Sprinkle Sugar onto a Cookie
If you don't happen to have a cookie with you, you can go to the bakery in Burglin Park and buy one. Make sure you have a sugar packet from the previously mentioned condiment shop!
Let's End This!!! (5) Win a battle while suffering mortal damage
This will happen most of the time you fight Territorial Oaks, since they explode when defeated.
Gift-Gathering Gala (5) Loot all gift boxes in Twoson and Peaceful Rest Valley
- Skip Sandwich in Southern Twoson.
- Teddy Bear in Paula's room.
- Hard Hat in Peaceful Rest Valley.
- Luck Capsule in Peaceful Rest Valley.
- Travel Charm in Peaceful Rest Valley.
- Crossiant in Peaceful Rest Valley.
- Bomb in Peaceful Rest Valley.
- Cup of Lifenoodles in Peaceful Rest Valley.
I would recommend saving the Cup of Lifenoodles, since they are an incredibly powerful item in the lategame, and they are limited in quality. Use Escargo Express to store the item for later!
Caught Blue-handed (5) Get caught stealing from the Happy Happy Village food stand
A nice spot to get Fresh Eggs here. Simply pay less than the amount asked (you can even pay nothing and get the items for free), and then talk to the man behind the tree. (Missable)
Insane Killing Spree (5) Defeat at least eight Insane Cultists in a single battle
The Insane Cultists have a chance to call for help in battle. All you need to do is stay alive long enough in battle to defeat eight of them. This one can be a bit RNG dependent. (Missable)
Happiness is a Blue Gun (5) Tame Mr. Carpainter without using any PP
Since you have the Franklin Badge, you can simply Defend until Carpainter does his Crashing Boom Bang attack. It takes at least 2 of these to kill him, so if luck is on your side, you'll kill him in a single turn! (Missable)
Noteworthy Unwrapping (5) Loot all gift boxes in Happy-Happy Village and Lilliput Steps
- Crossiant in Carpainter's House
- Skip Sandwich in Carpainter's House
- Great Charm in Lilliput Steps
- PSI Caramel in Lilliput Steps
- Crossiant in Lilliput Steps
Carpainter's House Lilliput Steps This one is missable because you can't go back into Carpainter's House after defeating him. (Missable)
Whac-a-Mole (5) Tame Mondo Mole, and don't let Paula's HP reach zero
There are 2 ways to go about this achievement. If you want to take care of it immediately, Ness must be at least Level 14. You need to paralyze Mondo Mole on the first turn, rendering him unable to attack you at all. After this, victory is easy.
You could also simply come back later in the game when you have a lot more levels, as this is one of the sanctuaries you can skip.
Your Sanctuary II (5) Claim Lilliput Steps
You'll get this after getting the melody for Lilliput Steps. As mentioned, Paralysis makes Mondo Mole a complete joke of a fight.
WARNING!! There is an achievement for getting every present in Winters. You cannot go back into the Snow Wood Boarding School after leaving. Scroll down below to learn the locations of every present so you don't permanently miss them.
Now That's How you Make an Exit! (3) Use an Exit Mouse
Bit late for this one, but this is when I got it. On the path to Onett, you can get an Exit Mouse from the house on the path. Use it in any cave to be transported back to the entrance. Can be very useful!
Four Fried Chickens and a Coke (4) Watch your first 'Runaway Five' concert
You'll get this when you watch the Runaway Five concert.
Uki Uki Kukyuki (4) (Thanks for the gum.)
You'll get this when giving the gum to Bubble Monkey.
Tales from the Cryptid (5) Spot Tessie in the Loch
You'll get this when you ride Tessie.
Supreme Ruler (2) Check and see how an enemy measures up
Jeff starts out with a Ruler in his inventory. I'd suggest using it in the Brick Road.
Brains vs. Brawn (5) Solo a Cave Boy with Jeff

Take to the Sky (5) Take flight with the Sky Runner!
You'll get this one after taking flight with the Sky Runner.
Ghostly Photobomb (10) Have your picture taken while at least one person in your party is possessed by a ghost
You'll need to get possessed to get this achievement. Save the photo op near the grave in Threed until you can fight Zombie Possessors (which you might be able to do earlier, but I can't remember.) When you are finally possessed, run or beat the enemy, and then dash to the grave to get this achievement. The grave is at the top of Threed. (Missable)
Picture Perfect (5) Have your picture taken 8 times
You'll get this after getting your picture taken 8 times. Be sure to follow the photo guide to make sure you've gotten every photo op to this point.
BOING! (5) Have Dr. Saturn operate on you
Free healthcare!
Fix it, Jeff! (5) Repair a Broken Air Gun
The Broken Air Gun is an item in the Snow Wood Boarding House. If you were using the map, you should know where it is. Jeff needs 12 IQ to fix it. By the way, be sure to give any IQ Capsules you find to Jeff, so he has that extra IQ if needed. It's only a useful stat for him. (Missable)
A Meditation in Patience (5) Successfully enter Belch's base
You need to wait 3 minutes in real time when asked for the password.

When asked if you want coffee, say yes.

- Bottle Rocket in Saturn Cave
- Rust Promoter in Saturn Valley
- Sudden Guts Pill in Saturn Valley
- Protractor in Saturn Valley
- Broken Spray Can in Saturn Valley
- Coin of Slumber in Milk Well Cave
Grapefruit Falls Saturn Valley Milk Well Cave I am unsure if the Bottle Rocket actually counts, but it's a useful item for Jeff anyways. So you should get it.
Your Sanctuary III (5) Claim Milky Well
You'll get this after getting the melody for Milky Well. Beware of Trillionage Sprout's diamondization attack.
Freed Threed (5) Bring light back to Threed
You'll get this when you return to Threed.
Significant! (10) Discover the significance of the Insignificant Item
The Insignificant Item can be found in the second floor of the Threed hospital in a drawer. You have to return it to the man on the second floor of the Twoson hospital. In return, he will give you a Magic Truffle, which is another item ridiculously useful for the endgame (and also limited in quantity!). Use Escargo Express to store it until then.
Fighter Pilot Eyes (10) Find both Sesame Seeds in the desert
Dusty Dunes Desert This map has the black and white sesames labelled. You have to do this anyways, since it's required for a photo.
Fix it, Jeff II (5) Repair a Broken Laser
The Broken Laser is an item in Belch's Base. There is not an achievement for Belch's Base, since the only thing in there is trash cans. You should still have explored it thoroughly, though, since you need it for the trash can achievement. The laser is in the bottom door, along with an IQ capsule. You need 24 IQ to repair it.
Dry White Toast (5) Catch the 'Runaway Five' at the Topolla Theater
You need to watch the show upon first getting to Fourside. It's missable because you can give the Diamond to the manager without watching the show. (Missable)
Eagle Eyes (10) Return the Contact Lens to its owner
The Contact Lens are in the Dusty Dunes Desert. They are the sparkling spot in the northeastern section. Once you get them, you can give them to Penetella Giovanni on the second floor of the Fourside Bakery. He'll give you dirty socks in return. Great?

You can immediately go backstage and talk to Venus, allowing you to watch her performance as well. (Missable)
The Auto-Fight of Your Life (10) Tame the Department Store Spook using only Auto-Battle
This achievement is pretty RNG-dependent. You can get Teddy Bears in the Department Store before the fight, and they can soak up a ton of damage from the Dept. Store Spook's PSI attacks. An important thing to note is you can mash A to make text go faster, allowing Ness to heal easier. Make sure you've been using Fast text mode as well for the best chance. (Missable)
Everdead (5) Try Everdred's patience as he shares his last words
Simply keep asking Everdred to repeat his story. He'll eventually get sick of it and run off. (Missable)

You'll get this upon finding Talah Rama in the depths of the monkey caves.
First-time Homeowner (10) Purchase the seaside property

Your Sanctuary IV (5) Claim Rainy Circle
You'll get this after getting the melody for Rainy Circle.
You can do each of these sanctuaries one after the other. There's a small amount of achievements I got in between the two, so I combined both sanctuaries in this section.
