Half-Minute Hero is an iconic PSP classic, a game that makes fun of how long RPGs take. 90 hours? Gimme half a minute. The sequel builds up on this premise, forgoing the alternate modes of the first game (which is good, I never liked Half-Minute Demon Lord or Half-Minute Knight) and focuses entirely on the Hero part. You follow the descendants of the hero of the first game as they go about saving the world! Unlike the first game, this one features an overworld instead of a level select, and you can freely explore the regions you've saved. You can even earn some experience outside of the goddesses' money grubbing hands (so she can't take it away from you!).

Not to mention the PSP version has been fully translated! Make sure to request this set to encourage our lovely devs to pick up this masterpiece!

I was raised on Amiga games, they were my childhood. Unfortunately, RetroAchievements doesn't have any Amiga support. What to do? Play Amiga ports for supported systems! James Pond, Shadow of the Beast, Lemmings, Chuck Rock, the gang's all here!

Wait, where is Baby Jo: The Super Hero?

The only port is for PC Engine CD, and while the software is different, the Amiga vibes are still here! The music is a bit different, but it's still the one from my childhood. The vibrant colors, the Amiga scrimblo enemies, and the daffy duck that gives hints are all here. Everybody should play at least one Amiga platformer, so why not Baby Jo? Like most Amiga games, it's very short, but will take a while to beat, and even more to master!

Hopefully we will one day get Amiga games on RA; until then, enjoy this port!

Space Station Silicon Valley on N64 is an incredible game, something more people need to experience and enjoy. It was made by Rockstar North and still stands the test of time. Side note, do not play the PlayStation port, it is unfinished garbage. SSSV is Super Mario Odyssey decades before it was a thing. You are Evo, a robot who lost their exoshell, and you have to kill and take over robotic animals to complete puzzles, collect power cells, and eventually get your robotic suit back and save the world.

The GBC port is a faithful demake of the N64 version, with all the same levels, objectives, and most of the animals. Turning these challenges from 3D into 2D is a wonderful feat, and I'd love to see a creative set for a demake of one of my favorite N64 games that I've found on RA. Forcing limited swaps, creative puzzles, etc. would be great to see here. I never got to be King Rat again in the PS1 version, so let's wish for a set for an actual faithful adaptation of a fantastic game.

Tetris Giant (Arcade)

Tetris Giant Tetris Giant Arcade Falling Block Puzzle

OK, I know what you may be thinking: "A Wish This Set for a Tetris game?" But wait! This is not any normal Tetris, this is way different from the usual games.

In Tetris Giant there is not the usual 10x20 grid like the other games, but this time there is a 6x7 huge grid for huge blocks! This arcade game was supposed to be the first of a series of arcade machines of popular/known games with minimalist gameplay and huge controls, so big that players would require both hands to just operate the stick. That... clearly didn't work out, since this was the only arcade created with controls like that that has been ever made by SEGA.

There are 2 main gameplay modes:

One for "beginners," which is an endless wave of pieces where the objective is clearing the most amount of lines within 2 minutes, with the possibility of extending the time by clearing multiple lines at the same time. There is no high score, and it is impossible to lose the game by having pieces overflowing the top. If that were to happen, pieces will automatically disappear from the bottom until there are only 2 lines of blocks.

The other is the "real" gameplay, in which players must obtain the highest score possible. There aren't any time limits, and this plays like any other classic game of tetris, where clearing multiple lines at a time gives more points. As players get points, they go higher and higher, starting from the bottom of the ocean and climbing the tower until reaching outer space and beyond. The difference with most arcade games is that it can save 1000 different scores instead of just 10.

However, the main attraction of this game is not its single player mode, but the multiplayer. If co-op play is chosen, the gameplay changes drastically: Each player has a 5x7 grid on their own and a shared 2x7 grid at the center. This means that both players must cooperate to clear the lines, with the possibility of swapping the falling pieces only 3 times during the whole game, and get the highest score they possibly can. There is also a PvP mode where the pieces are shared between the 2 players, and combos are used to increase the speed of the fallen pieces, or in the case of tetris combos, add unbreakable lines to the other player’s field. This mode is a short match of best of 3, which means a player requires 2 victories to win.

I would really like to see a multiplayer set for this game to expand the strange and unique focus of the 2 co-op modes in this game. While not very successful, I strongly believe that with a strong set, it could become a favourite of many to play with family or friends to beat some new RA based challenges or try to get a high score on RA's leaderboards.

Wily & Light no Rockboard: That's Paradise (NES/Famicom)

Wily & Light no Rockboard: That's Paradise Wily & Light no Rockboard: That's Paradise NES/Famicom Board Game
  • Write-up by: {% rauserpic HOOVEDOMEN %}

If you are anything like me, you have something of a fascination with the weird and obscure region-locked titles of otherwise popular franchises. While a majority of the Mega / Rock Man franchise has made it to the West one way or the other, Wily & Light no Rockboard: That's Paradise is a title that has never seen an official English release; the only way for us Western fans to play the title is through fan translations. This early spin-off entry in the classic Mega Man series is of note for a couple of reasons - first off, this is the first Mega Man series game where you don't play as Mega Man! There are 5 different playable characters, and yet none are Mega Man! In fact, this is the only classic Mega Man game where Mega Man isn't playable in some form!

Outside this oddity, the actual gameplay of this one is something of a Monopoly style board game. There are four different boards, each vaguely based aesthetically on the stages of the first 4 Mega Man games, and five playable characters: the three doctors, along with Roll and Kalinka. Much like Monopoly, you go around a board, buy up spaces, and if other players land on those spaces they have to pay a fee (how this fee works is different depending on the character that owns the space, which can lead to some really fun strategy!). Now, where the game gets interesting is the sheer variety of spaces and cards! This is a Monopoly style game, but each player has several cards to use with a variety of effects, and there are several different spaces that play with the board and other players in fun and unique ways. This game gets wacky fast! I think the card system is the most interesting bit here, as there are four different types of cards: Eddie cards (generally positive), Reggae cards (generally negative), Rush cards (generally movement based in some way), two different protection cards, and the most interesting, boss cards. See, the boss cards are where this game goes from pretty standard Monopoly style flair to a game that is a lot more aggressive! The boss cards are based off the Robot Master boss fights from the first four Mega Man games (and the Mega Man Killers from the first two Game Boy games! Please ignore the bizarre choice of a miniboss from MM3 in there as well...), each doing a variety of wacky, often very aggressive effects. For a modern comparison, if you have played 100% Orange Juice, this card system is a somewhat more tame version of what is present there. Rarer though is the transformation spaces, which turns your player character into one of three different robot masters (Guts Man, Shadow Man, and Dust Man) that can really lead to some aggressive play! There is a lot of strategy that can come from the variety of boards, cards, spaces, etc. that really makes this game special to me!

This game is just oozing with charm more than anything else. All of the boards are filled with cute remixes of stage themes from the first four Mega Man games, there is a lot of cute dialogue from the characters, and the sprite work is really some of the best on the NES! This game is just really cute, and both Mega Man and board game fans should give this one a shot sometime! Hoping a developer picks this one up so more people have a reason to try it!

Zombie Panic in Wonderland (Wii)

  • Write-up by: {% rauserpic SpectralOrion %}

Zombie Panic in Wonderland is a bizarre indie title that first began as WiiWare. It's a shooting gallery in a similar vein to Link's Crossbow Training where you gun down zombies as fable characters such as Momotaro, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, and Little Red Riding Hood (that's right, B.B. Hood from Darkstalkers isn't the only Red wielding guns!) The game is popular enough to get an updated port for the Nintendo 3DS and the Switch.

Among the massive ocean of shovelware on the Wii, this game isn't too shabby. It's roughly an hour long and supports co-op multiplayer. If you're looking to blow off some steam (and perhaps earn a quick mastery), this is a fun time.

  • Write-up by: {% rauserpic Laoth %}

Wrestling: Thunder City is a very interesting homebrew adventure demo themed around the world of professional wrestling. You play as the rookie masked luchador Thunder, where you can have chop battles against jabronis and learn about the mysterious death of the rookie Haunter in the same dojo you came to this town to train at. The game has charming visuals and music to keep you hooked for the duration of it.

If you like little Game Boy Color adventures, then this is for you. Because this was the final demo of this project, it is very safe to assume no other update will come out. If you're a dev that wants a simple GBC adventure to test your skills, this is the homebrew for you. With some unique interactions, a simple combat system against jabronis with HP & attack point management, a short history, and funny characters, there’s plenty to get creative with a set that players will love to master.

Sight Training: Enjoy Exercising and Relaxing Your Eyes (Nintendo DS)

  • Write-up by: {% rauserpic Pusheen %}

I'm someone who's often known for playing very short games. The last time I got a mastery over 5 hours was over 3 weeks ago as of the time I wrote this Wish This Set. However, today I have a Wish This Set request for a game that hopefully wouldn't take less than 5 hours to master. I hope. If it does, then oh well, it’s Peak Streak material.

Sight Training: Enjoy Exercising and Relaxing Your Eyes is basically kind of like Brain Age, but testing your eyes instead of your brain. What a game changer. The game comes with a bunch of training activities, an eye exam check where you can get your eye age, and even a record challenge high score mode where you can play some of the training activities and see how well you can do!

I actually tried to make this set myself; however, developing proved to be taxing on my time management and I had to step down from making the set. I still think that this interesting educational game made by Bandai Namco (yes, it is in fact made by them, I bet you wouldn't know that) deserves a chance at getting a wondrous set of achievements for people to play!

I also have an odd amount of nostalgia for this game, as it was one of the 7 DS games I had before my parents got me a 3DS and I started playing 3DS games. I even think I played this one more than Brain Age.

Uh, not much more to say. Hopefully someone reading this takes a chance on the game and picks up the set!

I thought to wish this set because we have a lot of the other ones. I figured to add this one to the list because there is a good amount of people who enjoyed these hacks from the SMW Central community, and the levels and designs of this particular hack are quite impressive. I know it's a lot of work for a dev or multiple devs to work on this set because it has 131 exits. That's quite insane, actually. And of course it would need an artist to work on the game badge and achievements as well.

I am surprised that there are fewer than 5 people requesting this set when we have sets for the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th VLDCs. It would be super cool for the dedicated players to have all these mastered together on their profile. The badge art would need to match with the others to make it go well together, I feel!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Choplifter II: Rescue & Survive (Game Boy)

Choplifter II: Rescue & Survive Choplifter II: Rescue & Survive NES/Famicom Shoot ‘em Up
  • Write-up by: {% rauserpic Dyhalto %}

The original arcade Choplifter and its many ports are well known for their brutal difficulty. Playing well is as much a hard skill as it is dumb luck that a shot fired from off-screen didn't hit only because you happened to move up a little.

Fortunately the sequel, Choplifter II: Rescue & Survive on the Game Boy, moves away from quarter-munching full-screen insanity and provides a more casual, yet fulfilling experience where you do the same thing: Rescue POWs. There's more of a combat focus with you having to destroy enemies to safeguard the area for rescuing, collecting power-ups along the way like standard Bombs, Flame for wide-area splash damage, and simple Rope so POWs can climb to you and save having to land on dangerous ground. At 5 levels with 3 stages each, it's a game that's easy to settle into, but challenging to master.

The set would likely be pretty vanilla. 15 progression achievements, some 100% rescue in stages that have surplus POWs. Maybe add challenges like no power-ups except when needed, such as the Rope for pickups or Flame to clear jungle trees. I would avoid damageless because it's too easy to clip a wall in the cave and jungle levels, but deathless is fair, provided it's not game-long. In late stages where the POWs required is equal to the number available, one of them getting hit by stray fire is an instant life loss, and total playtime is approximately 1.5 hours.

I had this game as a kid and have fond memories of it. I was honestly surprised to not see a set for it already, considering how many obscurities that do have one. Hopefully that can be remedied in due time!
