How to use a USB drive for ROMs? - Retro-Arena/RetroPie-Setup GitHub Wiki

Instructions

Perform an Update Scripts command within TheRA-Setup prior to completing the steps below.

  1. Format the USB drive using FAT32 or NTFS

  2. Plugin the drive to your Windows PC and create a new folder retropie-mount on the root of the drive

  3. Use WinSCP or other SSH tool to transfer all the folders and files from /home/pigaming/RetroPie/roms to your Windows PC (i.e., D:\RetroPie\roms)

  4. Use Windows Explorer to transfer all the contents of D:\RetroPie\roms to X:\retropie-mount\roms where X is your external USB drive. There should be only the roms folder within retropie-mount

  5. Use Windows Explorer to transfer the rest of your files to the USB drive in their respective folders

  6. Safely eject your USB drive and plug in to the Odroid XU4. If it's a USB 3.0 drive, use one of the blue USB ports out front.

  7. Reboot the system and it will automatically mount and use the files on the USB drive instead of the SD card.

SD card /home/pigaming/RetroPie/roms = USB drive X:\retropie-mount\roms

Important Notes

  1. retropie-mount does not perform any automatic copying of files from SD card to the USB drive.
  2. Only the roms folder is mounted on the USB drive.
  3. All other folders such as the BIOS, retropiemenu, and splashscreens are still located in the SD card. You do not need to copy them to the USB drive.
