Mood analysis

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior had considerably detailed graphics for what was the standard at the time, leaning into a semi-realistic art-style rather than a fantastic or a more "anime" orientated, even though various of its characters have fictional moves as their special attacks, such as the Hadouken or the move Yoga Fire. It was this bizarre touch that also granted part of its appeal, as it gave more variety and personality to the characters, but never by blowing out of proportion their design. 31, 32, 33

Ryu's Stage / Suzaku Castle
Ryu Stage Image
Here, the fight takes place on the rooftops of the Suzaku Castle. It has breakable (upon attack contact) signs on both sides of the stage reading Fūrinkazan (風林火山? "Wind Forest Fire Mountain"), a shortened version of a quote from Sun Tzu's Art of War. The same message is seen written on Ryu's belt in some of his appearances.

Ken's Stage / Battle Harbor
Ken Stage Image
Here, the fight takes palce in a small port near a village. No interactable items are found in this stage. However, there is a minor easter egg to be found: the ship on the right has it's name embroded in gold visible to the player: "Capcom", which is, of course, the name of the company responsable of Street Fighter.

Chun Li's Stage / Shopping District, Taiping Road
Chun Li Stage Image
Here, the fight takes palce in a crowded chinease shopping district. There, the player can spot numerous sellers of real companies, such as Coca-cola or Xiamen Meat Company. No interactable items in this stage, however, multiple times per fight some people riding a motorcycle traverse the street , both looking up to the fight. Despite being named Taiping Road, the stage appears to be based on Chun Yeung Street, which contains a real Xiamen Meat Company post.

Blanka's Stage / Amazon River Basin
Blanka Stage Image
A small village by the Amazon River is the set up of this stage. No interactable items, the only moving part of the stage are the spectators, which will cheer the fighters constantly.

Zangief's Stage / Big Factory
Zangief Stage Image
A big fabric, again, no interactable items. We find some spectators who cheer the fight, being them the only dynamic part of the stage. The only disctinct characteristic of the stage, beside a URSS symbol on the wall, is the fact that fences and different objects appear at 1st and 3rd level of depth, having the fight take place between.

E. Honda's Stage / Kapukon Yu
E. Honda Stage Image
The fight takes place in a japanease bath house. A myriad of diminute drops of water fill the stage. No interactable items, however, multiple elements in the back will flash back and forth once a character wins a round.

Guile's Stage / Air Force Base
Guile Stage Image
A military base of the EEUU. Some militar collegues of Guile can be seen in the background cheering for him, as well as a jet with the inscription "CAP RF512" which is possibly a reference to Capcom. Two interactable crates appear in this stage, breaking upon first contact.

Dhalsim's Stage / Maharaja's Palace
Dhalsim Stage Image
No interactable items. A picture of the hindu deity Ganesha can be found in the distance, referencing India's offical religion (hinduism). By far, the most noticeable trait of the stage are the multiple elephants found within, which will constantly raise their trunks and make a distinct sound.

Vega's Stage / Flamenco Tavern
Vega Stage Image
Quite a unique stage: while there are no interactable items by the player, this stage appears in arcade mode during the Vega boss fight. In that fight, Vega will sometimes jump to the fence in the back, gaining invulnerability for a few seconds. In a normal 1v1 match, such option does not appear. As a side note, we can see in the furthest wall the name of the inn: "Mesón de la Flores".

Balrog's Stage / Las Vegas
Balrog Stage Image
In the background, the player can see multiple signs of casinos, as well as luxurious cars. A little bit closer to the fight, some spectators cheer the fighter, with the exception of two women that run all across the stage for as long as the battle is taking place. Besides that, no interactable items or special properties.

M. Bison's Stage / Temple Hideout
M. Bison Stage Image
A bell occupies most of the center of the stage, ringing once as the battle starts (signifying that someone has challenged M. Bison in the arcade mode). Besides that, two interactable giant statues can be found at each side of the stage, which will break upon contact. Once broken, only the inferior part will remain still, while the upper part disappears.

Sagat's Stage / Ayutthaya Ruins
Sagat Stage Image
Nothing special obut this stage. Quite a simple background, only broken by a non-interactable palm tree, a gargauntuan Buddha statue and some rocks up front. The only dynamic part of the stage is the palm tree itself, which will sometimes rock to the wind.
