In free categories, only the last selection (assignment or specification) occurs in the BUDO key. Therefore, in ①, the BUDO translation of building for education and research (EDU.RESE) does not appear in the composite BUDO key. In free categories, assignments or specifications are separated by +. A special designation (e.g. number) gets a - as separator.
Within a BUDO vocabulary . is used as a separator, as can be seen in the example HIG.SCHO, to consistently name a school with the translation SCHO.
① B+HIG.SCHO-1
If a designation is not used, the separator - is not used either.
② Z+EAST
③ FL+1
④ R+LIBR
If an assignment or a specification is not used, the separator + is not used either.
⑤ R.CD-5
Each free category is separated from the other free categories with _. However, it only appears if it is actually used. From the standardized part (starting with the category system) the free part is separated with the dollar sign $.
Each standardized category is always used. The upper categories are always separated from each other with _. Each specification is separated with the help of +. Within a category the structure looks like this: (assignment)+(specification 1)[+(specification 2)][+(specification 3)][-(designation)]. The system categories ⑥ system, ⑦ subsystem, ⑧ subsubsystem contain only one specification and one designation. ⑨ Medium/position and ⑩ signal type contain up to three specifications and one designation. ⑪ Function type contains only one assignment and its designation. A separator is only used if the corresponding selection has been selected.
