Section 1, Lecture 3: CSS History, Present & Future

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) were first released in 1996 and have a storied development history. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) set the standards for its implementation from the beginning. In 1996, CSS1 was released, in 1999 the first draft standard for CSS3 was released by the W3C, starting a new paradigm for the development of CSS.

Whereas prior to this time, CSS was released as complete standards—CSS1 and CSS2—CSS3 sought to break CSS into modules addressing individual concerns of styling as implemented in CSS. As a result, there will be no CSS4, but there will be new versions of the individual modules that comprise CSS3.
