Output Options

This refers to (legacy) STANDARD RHESSys output - output variables that are automatically included in the Name_SpatialLevel.TemporalPeriod output files, i.e.

example_basin.daily, example_grow_basin.daily, example_patch.monthly, etc....   

This list does not refer to output when using an Output Filter and selected Output Filter Variables

Spatial/Temporal Output Options

Generating RHESSys output

TOGETHER, the TEC file events + RHESSys command line options determine the type (temporal and spatial output) of results that are written to the output files .

  • TEC file events – determine the timing of output, TEMPORAL data aggregation
  • RHESSys command line options – determine the SPATIAL scale of output

Combinations of temporal print events and spatial run options produce different output variables (i.e. basin daily growth output variables are very different from monthly patch output variables).

RHESSys has more than 100 state variables that can be looked at. Different RHESSys command line options in combination with different printing TEC events (tecfile) produce output files with specific variables aggregated to specific spatial/temporal scales. Be sure to consider what type of output you are interested in, as each combination of tecfile and command line options will output different variables.

Output files for each of the four TEMPORAL levels will always be built and written to the output directory (however, if no event for a temporal level is included in the tecfile, then no results will be written to the output file for that level - it will essentially be a 'dummy' file (i.e. if only daily is requested, then hourly/monthly/yearly will be generated but will be empty).

Temporal output file extensions:

Command line options determine the SPATIAL scale of output. Spatial level output files will only be constructed when the corresponding command line option is included on the RHESSys command line (i.e. if only the –b command line option is included, then only basin output files will be built). Spatial level of output:

stratum output

If TEC events print_daily_on & print_daily_growth_on are included in the tecfile AND command line options -b & -g are included on the RHESSys command line, then the result will be:

Output File Maintenance

Maintenance is suggested on a regular basis to eliminate empty files (the output directory can get very crowded!)

Suggestion for organizing output automatically
In the RHESSys command line script file, include commands to automatically delete files that no data will be written to (ie. if only daily output is being written to the out directory, include the following commands after the RHESSys command line:

rm ../out/*hourly    
rm ../out/*monthly    
rm ../out/*yearly  

Output files are also constructed for each Parameter Definition file used as input. So - if your worldfile uses:
   1 basin.def file
+ 1 hillslope.def file
+ 1 zone.def file
+ 2 different landuse.def files
+ 3 different soil.def files
+ 7 different vegetation.def files as input, then -
= 15 different output parameter files will be constructed.
(these will appears as .params files - the name will include the prefix given to the simulation output (name specified in the -pre command line option), the name of the input parameter def file, then the type of parameter file (hillslope, zone, soil, landuse, stratum), appended by .params
(for example, if you have input soil def files soil_sandyloam.def, soil_loam.def, soil_clay.def, the output params files will be

SimPrefix_soil_sandyloam_soil.params, SimPrefix_soil_loam_soil.params, SimPrefix_soil_clay_soil.params)    

ℹ️ Each of these files will contain the parameter values that were used in the simulation, which is wonderful for documentation/records - but can over populate the output directory.

ℹ️ One way to manage these files is to include commands in the RHESSys command line script file that automatically write all of this data to just one file rather than fifteen separate files.
To write all parameter data to one text file, include the following commands:

pr -F ../out/output_prefix*params > ../out/output_prefix.ParsUsed    
rm ../out/output_prefix*params        
(where output_prefix is the prefix name you assigned to the output with the -pre command line option)

The individual parameters can easily be retrieved from the text file if necessary.

Alternatively, include commands to automatically move all .params files to a sub-directory within the out directory (first create the sub-directory within the out directory, i.e. Params):

mv ../out/output_prefix*params > ../out/Params

Output Design

There are typically many spatial units in a landscape representation. Printing out data for every variable for every spatial unit on a daily basis over the course of many years would create very large output files. For example: printing results for all patches for a watershed composed of 100,000 patch units for every day over 20 years would result in a massive amount of output data: the patch.daily output file contains 78 variables, so 78 variables would be output for each one of the 100,000 patches for each day over 20 years (7300 days) = each patch alone would have 569,400 instances of output over the course of 20 years.

Therefore, it may be best to:

  • determine a particular time period for which you want to look at results - maybe just a single day or particular days, or monthly rather than daily - when requesting output for a finer spatial level output (i.e. zone/patch/stratum), or
  • request output for only a particular spatial unit (i.e. a single patch rather than all patches)

For example, if you want to look at the spatial distribution of spring and summer soil moisture, you may want to print all patch output just for the months of April and August. Or, you can print out results for just a single spatial unit, i.e. a single patch, for every day over a longer period of time.

To print output for a single spatial unit, you must give the full ID to that unit, which includes the ID’s for the parent containers it resides in. For example, if you want to print results for a single patch – you must give its patch ID as well as the ID’s for the zone, hillslope and basin it resides in after the patch command line option -p, with the format:
-p 1 321 1234 1234

Output Variables

The following tables contain the output file content description, the units, and the output header name (if different from the description). These tables reflect the output headings as of the most current release of a rhessys version. As a result, if you are running an older version of rhessys than the most current release, the headings in your result files may be in a slightly different order, as additional outputs may have been added after the version you are running was created.
