The planning phase is the first sub-process of FrNonMetricTraits. It starts with an instance of Planning.FrNonMetricTraits which may relate to reports, minutes or other kinds of documents. Generally, it is used to document all activities and preparations which were undertaken before a FrNonMetricTraits investigation is executed. It may explain why a specific skull is examined: as part of a research project or due to repatriation claims, for instance.
The output of Planning.FrNonMetricTraits is always the StudyDesign.FrNonMetricTraits. The study design is characteristic for this type of investigation and contains further information on what kinds of data are collected, which skeletal material is required and how it is selected as well as specifications of the data collection procedures. See study design for further information.
With the study design, a type of investigation is defined. Each instance of this type of investigation has to follow the standardized requirements. Thus, the requirements formulated in the study design are abstract and quite general. The individual investigations, however, may differ to some extent in data collection procedures and so on. Therefore, the study design is further concretized as a research plan which describes the parameters of this single investigation in detail.
It is the specific research plan which is realized in the following investigation execution. Hence, the term "study design execution" is a bit misleading.
