• I have identified an issue with AWS backup and its handling of external volumes.
• We can overcome this problem by moving from using external EBS to one big root volume. This has pros and cons, but I think the benefits outweigh any issues.

Pro

• further simplifies our instances
• allows us to quickly start using AWS backup

Con

• Potentially lower maximum IO performance, though this is really not a problem considering our current usage. This can also be offset by moving root volumes to new gp3 type volumes.
• Will require a <1h maintenance window
