5: Post game secrets & Alternate Reality Game - Qqwy/inscryption-secrets-hints GitHub Wiki
What is hidden at the GPS coordinates?
Answer
- A person (known as 'nutsfornuts' in the Inscryption Discord) went to the location and livestreamed his progress.
- His phone battery almost ran out, so he went back to a shop near the forest
- Daniel Mullins (the creator of the game) as well as (the actor of) Luke Carder went to a pub near the forest were they met up with him.
- All three of them went back to the spot in the forest.
- What happened next is documented here: https://clips.twitch.tv/ArbitraryHotCockroachPicoMause-w4I4hGivhsCmFXUM
...
Answer Part 2
- We now know that the 'the game creator kills people that dig up floppy' was a skit they decided upon while meeting up. Everyone is actually fine ;-)
- Nutsfornuts received the floppy (to be precise: an alternative floppy that had not been in the dirt for months, to make sure it can be read by a computer) from Daniel.
- The contents of the disk were read and (livestreamed)[https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1186211022], containing a single file called
file
that contained the textthisguymoaned
Answer Part 3
- The community was already aware of the 'ThisGuyMoaned' Reddit user being run by Daniel Mullins that was a major part of figuring out Clue 3.2
- It's believed that this was supposed to be a hint for Clue 3.2, and since the account is now deleted that belief is all but confirmed.
Hint 1
It seems that Luke has figured out a lot of this already. Closely re-watch some of his videos again, maybe you can find some clues there?Hint 2
Especially watch the 'ERROR' videos closely.Hint 3
Check the second-to-last ERROR video in the third and final series of videos.Answer
The second-to-last ERROR video contains the following post-it note:It reads: MYCOLOG1ST12|P3RH4PS??|BL00D$L3TT3R80X
Answer
This format of cypher is known from previous games that Daniel Mullins made (specifically 'The Hex'). It means that the parts split by `|`-s are separate clues which would lead to three separate answers (which, when combined, would result in the full answer cypher). So there are three 'subclues':
- MYCOLOG1ST12
- P3RH4PS??
- BL00D$L3TT3R80X
Hint 1
The clue is a cypher, so we need to find some place where cyphers can be entered. So 'decrypting a file' rather than 'putting a lock in a key'.Hint 2
You need to somehow break out of 'Inscryption the game' into the rest of the floppy drive.Hint 3
The place to do this, is just after starting a 'new game' (but before it shows graphics).Answer
This is tricky to figure out if you do not have a background in programming.Press Ctrl + C
while the white "Loading ... " lines of text are shown.
This will 'interrupt' the game program, instead opening up a command-line interface.
Here you have a couple of commands to look around and interact with the folders and files stored on the floppy drive.
Hint 1
Type `help` for help.Hint 2
Note that all commands are case-sensitive.Hint 3
Look at the current files using `ls`.Change directories using cd NameOfDirectory
.
Check particular files using open NameOfFile
(note that this only works on text files).
Answer
The encrypted cyphertext is the `OLD_DATA/log.txt`.You can attempt decryption by typing decode log.txt
followed by your current guess as to what the decryption key should be.
After this, type save log.txt
to 'save' the decoded text to the file again.
The Clue
MYCOLOG1ST12Hint 1
Be sure to interact with the Mycologists a whole lot during Act 2 of the game.Hint 2
After interacting enough, they will give you a 3D key to use in Act 3.Hint 3
The location to use their key in Act 3 is in the 'bottom right' (the only diagonal movement in Botopia) of the corresponding location on the world map of their hut in Act 2.Hint 4
During their boss battle in Act 3, they will spawn a monster whose name is very odd.Hint 5
Answer
The rest of the clue states that we need the 'first 12' characters from the creature name. So: `918234489010`.This is the first part of Clue 1.
The Clue
P3RHAPS??Hint 1
Look closely at the credits of the game.Hint 2
What does 'Natas' spell backwards?Hint 3
In Daniel Mullins' previous game 'Pony Island', there was an easter egg known as "A Beeper, Perhaps??".Hint 4
Closely investigate the asset links in the creditsAnswer
The provided link for the Beeper model does not, in fact, exist. The two question marks in the link indicates that we need to replace P3RHAPS??
with the equivalent characters from the URL. So the second part of the cipher is 8339344??
.
The Clue
BL00D$L3TT3R80XHint 1
What might 'Letterbox' mean?Hint 2
'BL00D$' might be read as 'bloods' but what is it referring to?Hint 3
Try visiting the bone lord in Act 2.Hint 4
Visiting the Bone Lord in Act 2 requires an 'obol'. This can be obtained by playing two 'broken obol' cards during a game.Answer
Visiting him in Act 2 will give you a key for Act 3. When going to him in Act 3, a special message will be shown if you have your screen in letterbox (4:3) format: 8043!$702D!!$666
(or: “Bone !$ Lord!!$ 666” in l33t)
Answer
First cypher: 918234489010|8339344??|8043!$702D!!$666
Entering 918234489010|8339344??|8043!$702D!!$666
when decoding the log.txt
, the normal text will change into the following:
Note that the part above this is still unreadable cyphertext.
But there are new clues between the <
and >
s!
Putting these together gives SE:167BP:TRU|23K2F!00R|ARCHIV$NEW#GAME?
The Clue
SE:167BP:TRUHint 1
These letters form a bunch of abbreviations.Hint 2
'SE' stands for 'Save Editing' and/or 'Story Event'Hint 3
Something changes in your game if you alter your `SaveFile.gwsave` file (in the Inscryption steam folder)Answer
Open up your `SaveFile.gwsave` and make the following changes.Type "167" in your completed events object:
Set "bonelordPuzzleActive" to "true":
and then go (through e.g. chapter select) to chapter 2 (Leshy's cabin post-tutorial), you can click on the Bone Lord's skull many times.
When his eyes glow red, he will show the following message: IAMLRNED2MCH
.
(Note that it is normal that the game will crash after this).
This is the first part of the second code.
The Clue
23K2F!00RHint 1
Read these as two separate parts: 23k2 and F!OORHint 2
Re-watch Luke's videosHint 3
The pig == 2. Read up on the Karnöffel game :-).Hint 4
The '3' refers to the triple attack. There is only one card which has this.Hint 5
The 'k' refers to a card with 'king' in its name.Answer
You need to play the following cards in the order listed in the hint:
This gives us STOP
, the first part of the code.
Hint 6
The same video also has another post-itHint 7
F!OOR reads like M!RROR RORR!M which is in the Act 1 rulebook (one of the kraken abilities).Hint 8
Read something both on a 'floor' and a 'roof'.Hint 9
Look for it in Act 2Answer
Leshy's cabin in Act 2 contains the safe code. But next to it his cabin has 4 planks missing on the left and 1 on the right. This makes the second part of the code part of the code 27341
.
Making the full second part STOP27341
.
The Clue
ARCHIV$NEW#GAME?This one again is split in two parts separated by the $
.
Hint 1
Remember the Archivist?Hint 2
Listen carefully to his musicHint 3
I hope you are able to decode Morse.Hint 4
The morse you can hear during the Archivist's song spells out `-... .. --. . .- .-.`Answer
The morse spells BIGEAR
.
This refers to Reginald/Barry. But also on its own it is part of the decoded cypher.
Hint 5
There is another place to use your Morse skills.Hint 6
This one is related to light flickering.Hint 7
The 'new game' button in Act 3. (note that in Act 1 it flickers in an irregular pattern).Answer
It spells out NOCHANCE
.
The final clue turned out to be:
BIGEAR$NO#CHANCE
Answer
Second cypher: IAMLRNED2MCH|STOP27341|BIGEAR$NO#CHANCE
Note that to use this clue,
- go back to the CLI.
- decode
log.txt
with the first cypher save log.txt
- decode
log.txt
with the second cypher.
This is Polish.

[1b] I have failed to break that encryption. I shouldn't even be, but what can I do to kill the fucking time?
[2b] You fucking idiot. the fate of the WORLD, if you take further effects into account ... and throw it into a chest with lots of identical disks? Now we gotta kiss these fucking Russians' shoes or risk a <GNN!NGIMA> worst fucking fate. I certainly have better things to do than read and reread this very secret disc. But <NATEE##|B1> no, you fucking idiots at GameFuna have to finish your game. ITS FUCKING <RCHK1N$> COVER, PEOPLE! [4c] Nobody will play it. Just give me a Super Weasel Kid clone so that I can print it out lest he knock on mine at eleven o'clock in the evening<$56-57M> A Russian with a rise of 8 feet. [5c]
New stuff between <
and >
spell: BCK2B3GNN!NG|MANATEE##|B1RCHK1N$$56-57M
.
This is the third clue.
The Clue
BCK2B3GNN!NGHint 1
You might like to know that Inscryption is based on a Ludum Dare game called 'Sacrifices must be made'.Hint 1
There is a difference between the original version of SMBM and the post-LD version. Be sure to play the original version (without the bugfixes).Hint 3
The original version of the LD game checks for a `cipher.cipher` file if you finish it. (The 'bugfix' version does _not_ do this). What cipher to enter?Hint 4
Use the cipher obtained from Clue 2: `IAMLRNED2MCH|STOP27341|BIGEAR$NO#CHANCE`.Answer
By doing this and then completing the game, it will print the message
WHTL!ESAHEAD
'What lies ahead' in l33tspeak.
The Clue
MANATEE##Hint 1
A manatee is a water animal.Hint 2
There is a reference to a card game that has to do with water somewhere.Hint 3
Maybe something about these 'Aqua Romans' can be found elsewhere?
Answer
It turns out that the Aqua Romans are a 'Smashup' card game idea which Daniel Mullins made many years ago.See
- https://imgur.com/a/2FCuD

The solution is ANTONY###
, referring to the 'Manatee Antony' card.
The Clue
B1RCHK1N$$56-57MHint 1
This is again a clue in two parts, separated by the `$$`Hint 2
We have seen the Birchkin elsewhere in the game.Hint 3
The Birchkin is shown in the first of Luke's videos
Try looking also for the Birchkin in the extended Daniel Mullins universe.
Hint 4
The Birchkin was featured in an earlier never-released game called 'Catch Monsters'.Answer
The Birchkin is the only monster with the 'Pacifism' ability.PACIFISM
is thus the first clue.
Hint 4
56-57M
refers to another game which Daniel Mullins made (free to play).
Hint 5
The game is Beneath the Surface
Hint 6
Try fishing between 56 and 57 meters deep.Hint 7
There is a chance of finding an old disk there. It prints asOjiiJz2XaVLh3KW/Kt9KDUzqamfn6nfo7pGnxOv7VRL/VN7V7
How to decrypt it?
Hint 8
This game looks for a cipher.cipher
file to be placed in the same directory as the game itself.
(We know this from other Daniel Mullins games which do the same)
Which cypher to use?
Hint 9
Using the first cypher, 918234489010|8339344??|8043!$702D!!$666
, the message seen when fishing up the old disk is decrypted.
it is shown as:
Wh0 kn0ws wh4t secrets 4re inscr!b3d upon it?
How can we put this in the final cipher?
Answer
We need the non-letters from the answer to ensure the cipher has the proper length.
Thus
Wh0 kn0ws wh4t secrets 4re inscr!b3d upon it?
turns into
0044!3
Answer
Third cypher: WHTL!ESAHEAD|ANTONY###|PACIFISM$$0044!3
Adding this into log.txt
decrypts the final part:
[1a] This is it. This transcribed journal page reveals the very location of Herr Hitler's rotting corpse and, more importantly, the precisely ordered deck of cards in his jacket pocket (The Karnoffel Code). I cracked the encryption last night. My situation here in the USSR is delicate, but I believe this intelligence warrants an action that may blow my cover. [1c] I am now prepared to smuggle the disk out of Moscow to West Berlin, then on <DATA CORRUPTED. [2b] [2c] I believe his plan will work. And if it does not? Better to lose this old data than allow the Soviets an opportunity to use it.
[2a] How fitting. [3c]
To read everything in chronological order, use the text snippets with the right numbering between the [..]
at the appropriate places.
But there is a new clue between the <
and >
! It seems to be an URL!
The Clue
`https://www.|kaminskim|fg.com/orderform`Hint 1
You can go to https://www.kaminskimfg.com/orderform
NOTE: This used to show a form. But after many people entered it, it was replaced by a 'wait for your orders' page.

Answer
Presumably entering your mailing address was the answer to this clue, though I'm not sure if that's confirmed. Either way, multiple people received something in the mail and those items will be discussed below, using DaBigKahuna's Big Ol' Catch-Me-Up Inscryption Guide(Secret Ending Hunt) as reference.
The Clue
Kaminski Backup Disks were received by multiple individuals, presumably people that entered their information in the form of the Kaminski site. They are listed below in the order they were received in the mail.
Disk 1
The first Kaminski disk arrived and progress opening it was livestreamed.
Images
The floppy disk contained a single file, with the filename backup_#2#.txt
Contents:
####QZ6h###
|PLAYING##|
##e E##
Due to the filename and contents replaced with #
signs, it was assumed that there were two other floppy disks with the remaining contents.
It was also assumed that the first line might refer to a YouTube video ID, the second line is the middle part of another three part cypher due to the pipes, and the last line stands for `the End
Even though this was only a third of the answer, people were able to put together the fourth and final cypher by coming up with possible solutions that would fit with both |PLAYING##|
and the assumed the End
. The answer is shown below.
Disk 2
The floppy disk contained a single file, with the filename backup_##3.txt
Contents:
########TS0
|NSCRYPTIONFRIEND
### #nd
The package was addressed to Luke Carder.

Disk 3
The floppy disk contained a single file, with the filename backup_1##.txt

As before, decode and save log.txt
using the first three cyphers if you haven't already, and then decode with the final cypher.

TOP SECRET INFORMATION
Me and my comrade Maxim took photographs of the corpse and buried it at the drop-off spot at <DATA CORRUPTED. FOR ANY QUALITY CONCERNS PLEASE CONTACT KAMINSKI DATA STORAGE MFG.> [1a].
- [1a] This is it. This transcribed journal page reveals the very location of Herr Hitler’s rotting corpse and, more importantly, the precious deck of cards in his jacket pocket (The Karnoffel Code). I cracked the encryption last night. My situation here in the USSR is delicate, but I believe this intelligence warrants an action that may blow my cover. [1c]
- [1c] Yeah, it did. Poor old Barry Wilkinson (a.k.a. Big Ear) was imprisoned literally hours after these words were written to the disk. He did eventually get back to the states but I have not had any luck contacting him... There are actually a shit ton of Barry Wilkinsons! And it might not even be his real name.
- [1a...] I am now prepared to smuggle the disk out of Moscow to West Berlin, then on Boston. The disk is carefully concealed among many blank ones. [2b][2c]
- [2b] Fucking idiot. The fate of the WORLD if you consider the far-reaching effects... and throw it into a chest with lots of identical disks? Now we have to kiss these fucking Russians' shoes or risk the worst fucking fate. I certainly have better things to do than read and reread this top-secret disc. But no, the fucking idiots at GameFun have to finish their game. IT'S A FUCKING COVER, PEOPLE! [4c]
- [4c] Fuck you too Mr. Kaminski! They never told us that.
- [2b...] Nobody is playing this. Just give me a Super Weasel Kid clone so I can print it out so it doesn't knock on my door at eleven o'clock in the evening by an 8-foot Russian. [5c]
- [5c] Yes, he is equally angry in person.
- [2c] Eureka! That explains so much actually. I could not figure out why this disk would be tossed into a crate with a bunch of blank ones. Barry's plan to smuggle it out this way seems contrived at best, but I can't imagine the pressure he was under over there.
- [1a...] I believe this plan will work. And if it does not? Better to lose this old data than allow the Soviets an opportunity to use it.
We are currently awaiting further instructions in a local tavern, playing a lot of Durak accompanied with a few glasses of vodka[2a].
- [2a] How fitting. [3c]
- [3c] Indeed, Barry, indeed.
We are full and satisfied, yet we didn't say a word about the work we've done today. We feel like we're coming close to the End of such a long journey.[1b]
- [1b] I couldn't crack that encryption. I shouldn't even be, but what can I do to kill the fucking time?
The YouTube Video
The first line on the disks was in fact a YouTube video, and it can be seen here:
https://youtu.be/e-FuQZ6hTS0
PSA: The ‘Lucky Carder’ YouTube-channel (this one) is created and maintained by a group of moderators from the Daniel Mullins Discord server (together with Kevin Saxby, the actor playing Luke Carder). It is not canon nor a part of this ARG, and Daniel Mullins is not involved in it.
And the final line, The End, signifies the ARG is now over.
