The material you share online is automatically protected by copyright. To allow others to reuse your material, you have to add a license.

There are two main groups of licenses:

Licenses for research outputs

The most commonly used licenses for creative work are the Creative Commons licenses. You can create your license combining the following features:

Creative Commons: You are using a Creative Commons license

Attribution: You want others to cite your material

Non commercial: You do not want others to use your material for commercial purpose

No derivatives: You do not want others to change your material

Share alike: You want others to share your material with your same license

By combining these features, you can create a license with a lower or higher degree of freedom of reuse of your material:

To create your license:

  • Go to Creative Commons
  • Reply to the questions in License Features
  • See your license in Selected Licenses
  • Copy name, symbol, or code in Have a web page? and add it to your document (e.g. presentation, website, etc.)

Note

  • Creative Commons licenses are not recommended for software because they do not contain specifications for source code

Licenses for code

There are several licenses for software with different permissions, conditions, and limitations:

Accurate description of software licenses is provided at choosealicense.

Notes

  • When you want to reuse existing code in your software, check its license to see under which conditions you can release your software
  • Add your license in each file of your software
