Problem definition :-

To design and develop a compact, lightweight, portable, and automated fruit-cutting machine that reduces manual effort, saves time, and ensures uniform and hygienic cutting of fruits. Traditional fruit-cutting methods require continuous human involvement, which may result in inconsistent cutting, reduced efficiency, and safety concerns.

The proposed machine uses a motor-driven conveyor belt to transport fruits from the input section to the cutting area. An IR sensor detects the presence and position of the fruit and sends a signal to the Arduino microcontroller, which automatically stops the conveyor belt. A suitable fruit-holding mechanism keeps the fruit stable while a motor-driven cutting blade moves downward to perform the cutting operation.

After cutting, the blade automatically returns to its original position, and the conveyor belt restarts to transfer the cut fruit pieces into a collection container. The Arduino coordinates the sensors, motors, and cutting mechanism to enable repeated automatic operation with minimal human intervention.

The prototype should weigh less than 5 kg, have approximate dimensions of 45 cm × 30 cm × 40 cm, and aim to cut at least 2 fruits per minute. It should be capable of handling selected fruits such as apples and bananas and should be manufactured mainly using affordable, 3D-printed components.

The machine should operate using a low-voltage power supply and include a protective enclosure around the cutting mechanism to ensure user safety. Food-contact components should be made from suitable food-safe materials and designed for easy cleaning. The overall system should be economical, easy to operate and maintain, and capable of demonstrating efficient and consistent fruit cutting through basic automation.
