Our Slack Community is Moving!
The Prusa3D Hangout Slack is on the move. What started last fall as a Google Hangout quickly outgrew the single channel experience, so we moved to Slack. Slack is wonderful, except again, we've already outgrown the limitations of their free service. Messages are scrolling off the channels at an ever increasing rate. Our file storage needs to be manually cleaned out more than once a week. We looked into using a paid version of Slack, but the costs are per user, and don't make sense for a large group such as ours. Costs would be over USD$5,600/each month!
So, we're moving.
We compared a bunch of different services, and have settled on Mattermost. https://about.mattermost.com
Mattermost gives us the key features of Slack, without the storage limitations. Like Slack, Mattermost has a variety of mobile and desktop apps as well as web access. Mattermost is self-hosted, and one of our admins has graciously offered to set up and help administer our environment. As time goes by, we may ask for donations to help defray hosting costs.
Here's our timeline:
24 April 2017 - Announce the Move
25 April 2017 - Mattermost up and running - early users welcome to try it out! Slack accounts that existed as of 4 April 2017 were migrated to Mattermost, but you will need to follow the password re-set process to get a new password. Accounts added after that date will need to be recreated. The new URL is https://3dprinting.community/login
IMPORTANT
Some of the accounts moved to Mattermost came over without a proper email address. If you request a password
reset, and don't receive an email in 10 minutes, please let us know in #General, along with your email
address, and we'll update it on the Mattermost side. Also, you can just abandon your other account and
create a new one.
26 April 2017 - All Prusa3D Hangout Slack channels OTHER than General will be closed to the public. We'll start posting regular messages redirecting Slack users to MatterMost. We'll keep the Slack site running for approximately two weeks.
9 May 2017 - The Prusa3D Slack site will be shutdown. We will re-direct folks to 3DPrinting.community MatterMost site as best we can.
Any questions? Please post in #General, and we'll do our best to provide answers.
