This book is a collection of second hand accounts of encounters with the bogeymen of the darkest woods; the Oni. One account tells of a traveler who arrived in a town at the edge of civilization. He appeared to be a poor merchant selling shoes. By the following evening, every customer was missing along with every shoe in their home. Another account tells a similar story. And a third. It was not until a man accidentally ran into the merchant, that his true form was revealed. The man had a walking stick made of ash wood, and on contact the Oni's magic ceased. The merchant, now revealed to be an Oni, was driven from the town. The shoes he left behind hid a magical marking granting him entrance to his customer's homes.
