To get started on the mod, one must craft a Cursed Infuser.

Then, find a Monster Spawner and place the Infuser on top of the block. This will activate the Infuser which allows you to convert items into components for the mod.

Next, you must craft the Totem of Souls. To do this, you must get two Activated Emeralds which are made by placing Emeralds onto an activated Cursed Infuser. You must also have a Soul Lantern available to craft the Totem. If you don't want to access the Nether, you can find a Soul Torch at the top floor of a Dark Manor, though you should scale the outside of the building so the inhabitants don't kill you!

Before you do anything with the Totem, it's highly recommended that you craft yourself a Dark Wand, and a Focus Bag. Both requiring Empty Focuses with the Dark Wand requiring a Haunted Plank. Empty Focus is crafted by placing a Glass Block on the Cursed Infuser. Haunted Planks are crafted from Haunted Log/Wood which is made by placing a Log/Wood on the Cursed Infuser.

Now that you have a Totem of Souls, you can start killing mobs to fill it with Soul Energy, which is used to power your spells, your rituals and more. Certain mobs give more Soul Energy than others. Villagers, for example, give quite a lot of Soul Energy by default though they don't grant Soul Energy if they're young.

If you're not feeling genocidal towards Villagers, the Illagers also provides quite an amount, but only a quarter of what Villagers can provide. But be warned when hunting down Illagers! Having a Totem of Souls will increase your Infamy amongst the Illagers when you kill them.

Once you have a good amount of Soul Energy, you can start crafting a Spell Focus. The Soul Light Focus is the easiest and convenient Spell Focus to craft as it shoots out a bolt that spawns a Soul Light that gives out light to its surroundings or gives mobs the Glowing effect. If you have access to the Nether, Focus can be upgraded to Glow Light Focus which spawn Glow Lights instead which have a higher light level.

The mod contains around 30 Spell Focuses with most of them crafted using Rituals instead of using Crafting Table. It is recommended to use Patchouli and JEI to get more information on how to craft them, but overall your next step should be making the Dark Robe set and a pair of Dark Boots of Wander.
