"The Past"

Objective

The object of the NOW is to promote well-used and maintained places on to the bigger grid and encourage reasons to earn the way to access it so that owners of their hangout can feel rewards by the quality of their users.

Summary of The Past

"The Past" is a series of locations that refer to a point of familiarity with how things are in other places. Furry MUCK has an extensive map with a number of "filler" spaces which allows folks to walk from one location to another.

There is little reason or motive to use that space however, being Furry is more of a social place and the chance of meeting someone while moving from point A to point B is rare, and instead it uses Taxi and Teleportation as its primary means to get from one location to another.

In Comparison MUD

In most MUD-like games, it’s important to map because potential encounters you may have along the way may help boost your character or get you to more dangerous regions; in a social that is far less important.

Why then

The purpose of The Past on NOW is to retain much of the familiarity so folks do not have to learn anything new, if they have little desire to. The plan is for all past hangouts to be in a simpler level grid that may be more easily reached but still reachable through ways similar to teleportation.

Ideally, parts in The Past will be connected to the NOW in some way so that the same places will be reachable from more than one direction.

The other reason for limitations is to avoid getting spoilers. NOW intends to have puzzles and games where the player can adventure in and experience a different challenge as they visit other areas. Being able to communicate or jump in while someone is in a puzzle may ruin the magic of the experience.

Package Ideas

One other possible direction is to build two “add-on” packages that players may purchase to restore functionality they are used to.

1. Basic Past Package – This package includes many of the most used commands in the MUCK but keeps the above idea in perspective

2. Advanced Past Package (Limited availability) – this provides the full complement of commands within The Past even those that go against the above ideals. How this package will be distributed has yet to be determined but its intent is for all those hardcore that just want things the way they are can have them – within reason
