Starter Items - Pinacolada64/NOW GitHub Wiki
What this is
The starter object is a beginning object chosen by a player for their account that seems interesting or useful. Its purpose is to enhance the player’s experience on NOW, so they have something they can connect with “a personal enchanted object” at the beginning and through their journey as they explore the possibilities of NOW.

What you need to know
An Old Bag of Dice
This contains any variety of dice that a player may desire or need to simulate randomness. These all includes special rules for dice such as Exploding Dice, or success on specific number or greater on each die along with anything else one can dream of.
Multi-Action Tool
This allows the player a limited usage of a potential forth wall aka game command (builder+). The potential power of this object will be limited to only its owner and only for its owner. The command should not directly be dangerous. How this is used will need a monitor especially as new commands are suggested. This is to identify potential to limit abuse. This object is for those wanting to learn the makings of NOW or perhaps something that nags at what someone with great power must wield, that you’ve always wanted to do.
Potential Commands
-
Examine – Not allowed to look too deeply or into PII of an account information.
-
Enhanced Who – Perhaps IP address, or where folks are at (besides private) global things like that
-
Teleport – Not allowed to teleport into private locations or teleport anyone else's objects.
Pet
The pet gives the player a companions that can follow around with them provide some amusement and/or support acting as a limited extension of the player. A pet will only explicitly act on behalf of it's player and will not generally interact with any other “player” character directly to minimize abuse. If the player choose to do nothing the pet will do its own thing. The person who picks a pet will always have something going on if they so desire, even if they have limited control of what it does, but in turn it should provide hours of entertainment.
Basics
A pet may start with some basic behaviors and be able to perform some tricks. In time more advanced things will be possible.
Potential Behaviors
-
Follow its player
-
Jump on its player or otherwise interact (rubbing, scratching at, nipping)
-
Move behind/beside/across its player
-
Run off and come back to its player
-
Make sounds
-
Respond to a particular action by a player (petting, barking)
Potential Basic Tricks
-
Call – Return to player if in a close enough area
-
Stay – stay where it currently at for approximately xx time
-
Speak – Make sounds
-
Go – Send off and go to player’s home when done
-
Be Ridden – When possible may be ridden by player
Advanced Tricks
-
Alert – Let player know when a specific something has happened
-
Fetch – pick up one of its player’s objects
-
Perform – Do a specific behavior for player
-
Scout – go into another area and come back
-
Engage – Engage an NPC with some sort of action
-
Interact – The pet will act as more advanced AI with specific stimuli
Sack of Many Things / Tricks
From this sack the owner may draw out things at random by the player. A random selection of twelve non-tangible items/themes/things along with corresponding tags. This can be added to from the pool of miscellaneous or added by the player manually. Its primary purpose is to encourage role-playing.
- Why might you pick this Object?
The ultimate tool for improvisational Role-Playing. Any item drawn from the sack is temporary but intended to allow character to just go with it and make the best (or worst) of the situation. The account will get their choice between ten (10), twenty (20), or (50) starter random objects to start with. The sack otherwise has no limits of what may be drawn from it.
- How to use it?
Use draw from sack. As long as there are multiple objects of the same category type an item will be drawn from the sack. An object which are general types engages the player to improv specific objects giving only the player an idea of what they are drawn while specifics categories will show those all in the area of what the character has drawn.
Here is the current list of the Sack of many Things.
- What work is required to make it more useful?
The random objects represent lists on the sack object, to expand you simply add more objects to the bag by passing in parameters of what category/categories the object you're adding is in.
- What are its limits?
The bag does not actually create physical objects, effectively the character is performing an improv to get what they are seeking. If a GM is involved in the role-playing they are the final word of if it works or not, so best to be entertaining.
Shape-shifting Cloth
The magical piece of clothing allows the user to always have something they can wear. The item can provide the necessary protection for any natural elements, In addition to protection it may allow the individual one or a few super abilities, such as speed, flying, mending or detecting states on things. Finally it may be set to act as a sentry providing a telepathic communication with the owner of wherever it is at and inform it owner and leaves. It can not fully move on its own but can go to its owner if they are near.
Individual who picks this item may seek to always be dapper and have a symbiotic companion that can prove useful much of the time (within its limited constraints). It doesn’t need to be fed, maintained or shined unless that is desired it will change for its owner as they desire.
