Storage
What your character carries is an extension of what they wear and defines them just as much as clothing. A wizard that has fallen into one-to-many rivers might store their spell book in a waterproof pouch. A former army medic might carry two quarterstaffs and a spare bedroll on their pack just in case they need an improvised stretcher for an ally. An overly pragmatic barbarian might opt to just carry their weapon in their hand at all times rather than buy a sheath for it, seeing as they're "always getting into sudden fights anyways." It is encouraged for you to think about not just what your character chooses to carry, but also where, how, and why.
Bulk
Instead of using a complex weight system, all items that are carried or worn are considered Bulk. You can carry a number of Bulky items equal to 10 or your strength score, whichever is higher. If your size is larger than medium or if you benefit from the Powerful Build feature, your Bulk Capacity is doubled for each size category above medium, but if your size is tiny, your Bulk Capacity is instead equal to half your strength score, rounded up. While using the bulk system, ignore the Strength column of the Armor table. Bulky items include:
- A coin pouch that can store 100 extra coins is worth 1 bulk.
- A single piece of adventuring gear (excluding those without weights), a weapon (and it's sheath), a shield, a tool kit, or an instrument is worth 1 bulk, plus 1 additional bulk for every 20 pounds it weighs.
- A set of armor is worth 1 bulk, plus 1 additional bulk for every 20 pounds it weights.
- A creature is worth 1 bulk, plus 1 additional bulk for every 20 pounds it weighs. the bulk of the items it's carrying are added to it's bulk cost, meaning that often times unconscious allies must either have their packs removed and items redistributed before transport, or be dragged along the ground.
- A magic item is always worth at least 1 bulk, as the care needed when transporting them makes them substantially more difficult to carry than their mundane counterparts, even if they would normally be considered a trinket.
You can carry nonmagical trinkets, a single nonmagical backpack, a single nonmagical quiver, case, or pouch, your first 100 coins, and the clothes you are wearing without adding them to your bulk.
You can carry more than your strength would normally allow, at the cost of some mobility. If you carry more bulk than your maximum, to a maximum of 50% extra bulk, rounded up, each of your speeds are reduced by 10. If you want to transport an amount of bulk greater than that, you must instead push or drag the exceeding items. Your speed is reduced to 5 while it's doing so, and you are unable to use any speed other than your land speed. However, if the total bulk of carried and pushed/dragged items exceeds twice your maximum, you instead cannot move the exceeding items.
