4.5 Given a scenario, troubleshoot and resolve common fiber cable issues
- Attenuation/Db loss
- Scattering & Absorption
- Caused by:
- Cable quality
- Splices
- Connectors
- SFP/GBIC - cable mismatch
- Improper cable type doesn't allow you to connect devices
- Bad SFP/GBIC - cable or transceiver
- Equipment Needed: OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)
- determine overall length
- attenuation
- faults
- Wavelength mismatch
- Determined by the Transmitter
- Transmitter and Receiver must match wavelength
- Fiber type mismatch
- Single Mode to Multi Mode
- results:
- Wavelength mismatch
- attenuation to signal loss
- Db loss
- Dirty connectors
- Connector mismatch
- some connectors are similar but may not be compatible.
- e.g. FC and ST both use a similar 2.5mm ferrule for a connector
- Bend radius limitations
- Tight bends can cause light to be loss through the cladding.
- TIA standard is approximately minimum of 2" radius bend to prevent signal problems and breakage
- Distance limitations
- Depends on the fiber mode (single or multi)
