Setaside
Description
Uncultivated cropland (i.e. outside the cropping period) is merged in setaside stands, separated in irrigated and rainfed to prevent that irrigation water from irrigated stands is transferred to rainfed stands in off-seasons. The setaside stand is where carbon pools (and water pools) are mixed during un-cultivated stages. This mimics crop rotations to some extent.
Details
At the beginning of a year, total cropland and total grassland areas are determined from input in the land-use change routine. All crop stands are created out of the setaside stand once the sowing date is reached. After harvest, crop stands are returned to the setaside stand ensuring mixing of carbon and water pools (only within irrigated or rain-fed areas). src/landuse/setaside.c
During fallow periods, setaside stands can either be barren or growing
grass, referred to as intercrop. Whether to grow intercrops
is specified globally in
par/param.par or par/lpjparam.js
and only affects the carbon and water dynamics during the fallow period.
Technical Note
Intercrop specification (on/off) is set in
par/param.par
