3. PROBLEM DEFINITION - P-Div-Engg-Exploration-Odd-2026-27/Repo-02 GitHub Wiki
Need Statement
Desktop Toy :- A toy manufacturer requires a compact interactive desktop toy that combines mechanical movement with simple user interaction, as conventional desk toys may provide limited engagement and repetitive entertainment. The proposed product should create interesting and repeatable motion patterns through an engaging interactive experience while remaining safe, compact, visually appealing, and suitable for desks, study spaces, offices, and educational environments
3.1 Question and answer
Table 1: Questions and answers
| Sl.No | Questions | Answer | Objective/Function/Constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | What is the size of toy? | 15cm x 15cm x15cm | Constraint |
| 2. | What is the range of budget? | As cheap as possible | Objective |
| 3. | How is the toy looks like? | Natural & aesthetically good looking | Objective |
| 4. | what type of toy do you want? | It should do some response and entertainment. | Function |
| 5. | Do you want continuous interaction? | Minimum 1 hour of interaction. | Constraint |
| 6. | How can the toy operate? | It should run on battery | Function |
| 7. | Which type of mechanism do you want in the toy? | Change in direction according to the hand gesture | Function |
| 8. | Nature of toy? | It is an automatic toy. | Objective |
| 9. | How can the toy react? | Should react on its own,and buttons. | Function |
3.2 Basic Survey and requirements
Table 2: Observation from a literature survey
| Sl.No | Observation from Surveys | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | Size and form factor | It should be a compact, desk-friendly toy |
| 2. | Mode of interaction | The toy should follow hands without physical touch or mobile apps |
| 3. | Locomotion style | It needs to move like a crawling insect using a 6-leg mechanism |
| 4. | Power supply | The system must run cordless on standard AA/AAA or small LiPo batteries |
| 5. | Budget constraints | The toy must be built with low-cost components suitable for a student project |
3.3 Identifying Client's Objectives
Table 3: Objectives identified
| Sl.No | Objectives |
|---|---|
| 01 | Toy should mimic insect-like walking. |
| 02 | Toy should be interactive and responsive to hand movements. |
| 03 | Toy should be compact and easily portable. |
| 04 | Toy should operate autonomously without manual controllers. |
Problem definition version 1.1 :-
Design a compact, autonomous desktop toy insect that mimics crawling motion and interacts with the user by tracking and following hand movements.
3.4 Identify constraints
Table 4: Identified Constraints
| Sl.No | Constraints |
|---|---|
| 01 | All electronics must fit within a small, compact body. |
| 02 | Must operate entirely offline without Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or app control. |
| 03 | Must be powered by onboard batteries (AA/AAA or 5V Li battery). |
| 04 | The toy must operate for atleast 1 hour |
| 05 | Project must remain strictly low-cost. |
Problem definition version 1.2 :-
Design a compact, autonomous desktop toy insect that mimics crawling motion and interacts with the user by tracking and following hand movements. The toy must fit within a 15cm x 15cm x15cm body, operate without Wi-Fi/apps using AAA standard batteries, and remain low-cost.
3.5 Establish Functions
Table 5: Identified Functions
| Sl.No | Functions |
|---|---|
| 01 | Walk forward, backward, and turn left/right |
| 02 | Detect hand presence and position (left/centre/right) |
| 03 | Indicate operating state (Standby/Follow) to the user using Red and Green LEDs. |
| 04 | Power on and off simply via a manual slide switch. |
| 05 | Automatically reverse and back away if an object gets too close. |
Problem definition version 1.3 :-
Design a compact, autonomous desktop toy insect that mimics crawling motion and interacts with the user by tracking and following hand movements. The toy must fit within a 15cm x 15cm x15cm body ,should operate without Wi-Fi/apps using AAA standard batteries, and remain low-cost. It must detect hand positions and drive forward, backward, or turn Left/Right , and indicate its current standby or active state using LED indicators.
