Viconia - Otherwisely/BG2-Romance-Expanded GitHub Wiki

Overview

Viconia Romance Expanded is a mod that fleshes out some of Viconia's romance dialogues and offers a same-sex romance for female CHARNAMEs. Ever since BG2 was released in 2001, players have been infatuated with Viconia and her turbulent romance. Unfortunately, her romance was restricted to male characters and heavily focused on drow gender politics, forever leaving her female fans dreaming of a more personalized romance… until now!

This mod is a careful rewrite of Viconia’s romance in Shadows of Amn*, allowing for an alternate and unique romance path for a female CHARNAME. Learn how drow society treats same-sex relationships, navigate new relationship obstacles, and fall in love all over again.

*F/F romance for Throne of Bhaal coming soon!

Additional Features

  • F/F Romance that does not require sexual acts, making it ace-friendly.
  • New romance conflicts and interjections for Anomen, Rasaad, and Hexxat.
  • Existing romance conflicts were written or modified to support same-sex romances with Anomen, Rasaad, Jaheira, and Aerie.
  • Improved and expanded dialogue for both genders.
    • LT7: Viconia’s compliment is reflective of CHARNAME’s stats.
    • LT13: The events of SOD are acknowledged. The player may also have a more personalized discussion of how Viconia views CHARNAME’s race. Relatedly, LT31 has Viconia say she "likely" worshipped Lolth longer than CHARNAME has been alive in order to account for longer-lived races.
    • LT33: The dialogue option stating that Viconia mentioned her brother will only appear if she actually mentioned her brother.
    • LT37: Dialogue referencing Viconia's story about the baby will change to reflect if she actually told the story.
    • LT55: CHARNAME can share more specific coming-of-age moments with Viconia. Imoen may interject if present.
    • LT57: Viconia’s dialogue will reflect the current state of the plot, including whether or not Imoen has been rescued and if Bodhi is still alive.
    • LT59: When discussing the future, the player can now bring up their stronghold (if any) and Viconia will react accordingly.
    • Romance support for all races (with a few special changes for a half-elf).
  • A few minor grammar, spelling, and miscellaneous corrections.

Known Issues

In the unmodded romance, there are a couple of issues with LTs triggering correctly. LT41 and LT51 will not always immediately trigger after their previous lovetalks despite being intended to do so. Relatedly, LT67 will immediately trigger after LT65 despite being meant to trigger after some time has passed. These issues persist in the modded version. A solution is being sought and will hopefully be implemented in future versions of the mod.

While playing the mod, you may encounter audio lines that refer to CHARNAME as male even if playing as a female character. Although not ideal, this was intentionally left as-is. Viconia does not have enough audio lines using words such as she/her, woman, etc to be able to edit the lines accordingly. Due to the ethical issues regarding AI, it was decided not to use a voice cloner replace these lines.

If you encounter any additional issues--especially lines that refer to a female CHARNAME as male--please let me know on the discussions page or on whichever forum you originally found this mod.

FAQ

Q: Why write a bisexual romance for Viconia? A: It’s not just men who were intrigued by Viconia—women were too. While it’s possible to remove the gender restrictions on her romance via console or mods, the romance itself focuses heavily on drow gender politics. With this in mind, there was a lot of potential to explore drow gender relations through a queer lens. It was important to me to keep Viconia in character and carefully consider how she might approach a same-sex relationship.

Q: What changes did you make for a F/F romance with Viconia? A: Generally speaking, Viconia is a bit more respectful of a female CHARNAME. Viconia is less eager to snap at her and when she does resort to insults, they are more tempered. That does not mean there is no conflict between the two—a turbulent relationship is a key component of the Viconia romance—but it does play out a bit differently. Primarily, the main conflict in the romance is not about Viconia ‘submitting’ to a male, but rather perceiving a female CHARNAME as a potential rival and threat.

Changes were also made to some of CHARNAME’s dialogues. The more dismissive and condescending dialogues have been rewritten to feel more natural between two women. A female CHARNAME can also extend solidarity and understanding to Viconia when the topic of abuse comes up.

Additionally, her dialogues will touch on different topics than what a male CHARNAME will hear, such as:

  • How same-sex relationships are handled in drow culture.
  • Viconia’s abusive husband, Riklaunim.
  • The stresses of F/F relationships in a highly competitive culture.
  • Bondage!*

* Participation in bondage is optional
