Some thoughts about ODC & FDD (Gitcoin) activities - OpenDataforWeb3/Resources GitHub Wiki

Context: The ODC was spawned by FDD, a workgroup within Gitcoin. The strategic imperative for Gitcoin and FDD was to further decentralize the work of gathering and analyzing data to find and counter Sybils.

In addition, FDD recognized that many projects including FDD were "reinventing the wheel"; for example, a large number of projects have been:

  • creating playbooks or opinionated stacks
  • curating data sets
  • finding and providing feedback and support to decentralized data and analysis projects
  • attracting and training data analysts, including web2 experienced analysts
  • assessing useful algorithms and data preparation and analysis to use in identifying Sybil attacks
  • gathering requirements from round operators, those performing airdrops, and communities and others that are often attacked by Sybils

Out of this desire to further decentralize itself while addressing in an open way many common problems (and problems with the commons) was born the OpenData Community.

This brief document is intended to specify which activities are more likely to be the primary responsibility and focus of the ODC versus which are more likely to be the primary responsibility and focus of the FDD. In practice - many members of the FDD are active in the ODC and vise versa. Cross-pollination of techniques and team members is valuable to both organizations and communities. Also, this is a working document as an exercise to help both organizations and their stakeholders understand their relative areas of emphasis. This document is NOT intended to ever close off any initiative by any individual or team in either community.

Task or project Gitcoin FDD OpenData Community Explanation
Find projects ad-hoc YES ODC sees useful projects as a primary persona to curate & support
Run a node or nodes for analysis YES Both may run nodes; ODC intends to focus on access & decentralization
Fund new projects unlikely YES The ODC intends to use something like the Grants Stack from Gitcoin
Currate a "best stack" unlikely YES A basic function of the ODC is for the broader community to curate a stack
Hackathons unlikely YES Perhaps obvious - a cadence of hackathons from ODC to find partners & projects & generate some revenues is ongoing
Anti Sybil Services likely unlikely The FDD is pulled into service engagements frequently - it may start charging for them such as via grants and otherwise; the ODC is not a services org
Gather useful data sets some YES It likely makes more sense for the ODC to create & maintain publicly available useful data sets than the FDD; for example, airdrop black & whitelists from partners; this will require an appeal mechanism which will take support
Architectures YES unlikely The FDD is innovating in providing a modular architecture - comprised of Legos - this and similar concepts are typically invented by FDD and then often supported & filled in with example projects by ODC
Open source Legos YES YES Both the FDD & ODC are building Legos in public
Integrate Legos in software YES Minimal The FDD has the ability to deliver & support customized anti-Sybil and other analytics DAPPs for operators of the Grants Stack; the ODC periodically may have hackathons to experiment with approaches to building dashboards however will not create or support integrated solutions for grant operators
